OOTP20 League - Interest (Team Details Needed!)

Icy and Schmidty have suggested they would be interested in an OOTP 20 league. I think we would need at least 8 owners to do it properly, probably 10, but we can see how much interest there is.

Things to think about.

Playoff Format: If there's 10 teams, perhaps a best of 3 between 2 and 3 with the winner playing 1 in a best of seven, or just top division team in each division qualifies (or top, plus two wildcards, either the 2nd place team from each division or the next best two records)

Unless we get more folks than I'm expecting, (like, 14 at least) I think 1 league will be fine.

DH/No DH?

Time Frame? (Modern or Past era)

standard 14 days between sims, or?

I have time to do something like this right now, I'd be interested. Slight preference to modern era but not a big deal.

Sounds like a great idea! I would like to be a part of it.

My choices would be:
DH
Modern or Fictional. I do like Past Era, but more as a replay thing using Strat-o-Matic.

One of my favorite gaming experience was during the FOOL years. So yes, definitely interested. I don’t have OOTP 20 yet but this would make me purchase it if this is a go.

Interested.

While I hate the DH I like it better for these type of leagues (so not at the whim of the computer on pinch hitting for a pitcher that is going well).

I would actually prefer fictional players. Just like not having any preconceived history or attachment to the players.

No clue on the sim amount/lengths. Just not too demanding of a schedule to where it feels like a chore to keep up with.

For a small league, the ultimate was the JBL for me.

I'm interested, but need to understand more before I would commit (I've never been in an online league before).

What does "standard 14 days between sims" mean? Are those real life days, or does it mean each sim goes forward two weeks of in-game time?

If it's the latter, then how often is the game advanced (so like, how many days of real time do we have to adjust lineups or whatever)?

How do trades work, are they voted on by the other players or is there just a commissioner who makes rulings?

Basically, whenever the commish runs a sim (depending on how often people want, this can be 2-3 times a week or more), that sets up how far the commish will sim before posting a new file.

So, for example, if we agree to 10 days per sim, 3 sims per week, that means we advance roughly one month per week.

It's important to figure this out, because then the injured list needs to be set to modify that (say, we play seven days per sim, then we want the injured list to be a length divisible by 7 so that they'll be eligible once a sim ends.

Any thought of playing with injuries off? FOOL was like this and it was nice not to worry about missing a couple sim runs and filling your roster with healthy players.

We can put that to a vote, but I'm not sure I'd go for it (For those of you who remember my past history in OOTP Leagues, I had the WORST luck with Career Enders). I'd be willing to turn it down a notch or two though.

That was the right thing to do with FOOL because the regular season was simmed in 1 sim.

I prefer to deal with injuries out of realism, it's part of the team management I like as we don't coach the games ourselves.

Agreed. Injury balance feels mostly OK in 20 so far for me - I'm fine with taking it down a notch (and maybe even a blanket rule to turn career enders into 12-18 month injuries if you can't just eliminate those in the game) but I'd be strongly against turning injuries off, that's a big part of strategy and realism gone otherwise.

DH, modern, 10-14 days depending on how many sims there are a week.

I prefer fictional players. I like to create my own history.

So, we have 12 managers at least.

This is what I suggest if we start as 12 owners, as the league setup from my preferences and what you guys have suggested above

Modern Day (2019)
Fictional Players
1 League, 2 Divisions 6 teams per division
10 Day Sims (10 Day Injured List)
DH

Stuff that hasn't been discussed yet
Full Minors?

Inaugural Draft?

26 Man Rosters?

Maximum 12 Pitchers on roster?

40-Man Roster? (My vote is no, but I'm willing to put up with it)

154 game schedule (14 games versus every other team)?
If we go with 154 games, that would be 7 home/7 away vs every other team, so typical series length would be 3/4 games.

(if we get a couple more managers, it would be 156 games (12 games vs every other team), so on and so forth)

Arbitration/Free Agency/Qualifying Offers?

Playoffs? (PLAYOFFS? ) I'd suggest divisional playoffs with the division winners taking on the wild card teams, but to incentivize winning the division,t he best of 5 would entirely be at the division winner's home field, and then standard 2-3-2 for the League Series.

It would look like this

Round 1: BEST OF FIVE (ALL AT DIVISION WINNER HOME)

Eastern Division #1
Eastern Division Wild Card

Western Division #1
Western Division Wild Card

Round 2: Best of Seven 2-3-2

Still space, you'd be #13, and SteveW would be 14. If we get 16, we may want to split it up into two leagues.

My thoughts on league setup. If I don't mention something, I am cool with that Fozzie laid out above.

Minors, I'd be cool with 3 levels. I don't want to mess with the short season A and rookie league stuff. AAA, AA, A full season works for me.

Qualifying offers, they are fine in real life, but I don't like playing with them. If someone drafts a player, let them have the player.

I'm pretty much fine with whatever for the rest.

Thanks for putting this together, SirFoxxie.

Seconded on 3 levels of minors. Keep it simple. Obviously the draft/international player intake would need to be adjusted accordingly.

On board with anything that simplifies the more obscure financial rules.

Are coaches/scouts still awful? It’s been a long time since I’ve been in an OOTP league but I remember the more successful ones just turning the mechanism off.

If you do 16 I'd suggest going back to MLB with 16 teams(pre 60?) and then possibly simulating 20 years or so without the expansion maybe. Or at least see how a roster set under those parameters looks

still room, let's say we cut off on Wednesday.

Also, going above, this is what I think I'm going to do if it's ok for everyone:

Expressed interest as an expansion team if work allows down the road: SackAttack

We are at 14 yes, 1 maybe, 1 down the road.

If we do get 16, the break down would be probably as follows:

2 leagues or divisions of 8. Top three of each league qualify for playoffs. 2v3 best of 3 at 2nd place team, league championship series and "world" series best of 7.

Do we want interleague play? (if so, probably better to do two divisions instead of two leagues, either that or just let the schedule generator do it), 15 other teams X10 versus each team would be 150 games. If you do just within league, it would be 22 games versus each other team for 154.
