Need Computer Help
I'm having problems with my computer. I believe it's my 3D card (256 MB ATI RADEON 9800). I can play 2D games no problem (Starcraft, FOF), but any 3D games (City of Heroes, Medal of Honor, Half-Life 2) are...choppy. They're not choppy, but the video is severely messed up. It's like when you have DirecTV during a storm and the video comes in bad. I just updated my Windows (XP) and video card drivers. It was working fine this morning, but it's really messed up now. Due to the holiday, I'd have to wait until Tuesday to get tech support from Alienware. What should I do?

Do you have another video card you can test with?

Either uninstall the WinXP update you just did (Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs) or go to ATI's website and download their driver and install it.

I do not have another video card I could test. Also, I performed the WinXP update after the problem. Also, I installed ATI's drivers after the problem as well.

I just blew out all of the dust...it was a lot. Thanks for your suggestions.

Dust killed my last video card. When I took the computer apart, it was literally caked onto the cards fan (and everywhere else). So much it would hardly spin, and it overheated. |

Another thing you could look at is DirectX. You can launch dxdiag from Start->Run and look at the Display tab. See if you can pass the Direct3D tests. If not, you may want to update DirectX as well.

Looks like it was my video card. I guess the dust monster got it as well. I'll order a new one off newegg.com.

Got my new video card and installed it today. Funny. Same video card I got two years ago for $500 I got for $163.

FYI dust and marijuana residue are not the same thing.

Have you ever tried scraping the resin out of your pipe at 3am? No. So don't try to act like you understand. |
