Phillies World Cup (OOTP 14)

Son of a Bitch!!!

I was going to do a Phillies World Cup but it looks like I didn't save before the damn thing crashed.

Here is what it would have been (and might be if I feel like doing all the damn work to get it setup again)...

8 groups of 8 teams selected randomly from the 'top' set of Phillies teams.

Each team plays 3 home and 3 away against the others in their Group.

The top 2 teams from each league advances to the final stage, the association playoffs which are each 7 game series.

I imported one by one all teams into their groups. Each group being a league. Changed all settings to take injuries, financials, trades, suspensions, etc... out of the mix. Setup the 42 game schedule.

Associated the leagues.

Then went to create the association playoffs and the damn game locked up.

I hate myself for not saving but it is bullshit that the game should freeze like that when trying to do nothing out of the ordinary.

Group A
1952 (.565)
1950 (.591)
1979 (.519)
1967 (.506)
1968 (.469)
1990 (.475)
1909 (.484)
1975 (.531)

A couple of front runners in this group with 1950, 1952 and 1975 most likely containing the 2 teams to move on. The draw was lucky for them.

Group B
2002 (.497)
1910 (.510)
1998 (.463)
1954 (.487)
1957 (.500)
1984 (.500)
1976 (.623)
2003 (.531)

1976 looks to be the clear favorite with the other teams battling for the second spot.

Group C
1911 (.520)
1983 (.556)
2001 (.531)
1916 (.595)
1907 (.565)
2006 (.525)
2009 (.574)
2004 (.531)

The group of death. No group is as up in the air as this one.

Group D
1987 (.494)
1949 (.526)
1994 (.470)
1977 (.623)
1908 (.539)
1905 (.546)
1991 (.481)
1978 (.556)

Will both late 70's teams advance or will the early 1900 teams grab a spot?

Group E
2011 (.630)
2007 (.549)
1964 (.568)
1999 (.475)
1981 (.551)
2010 (.599)
2012 (.500)
1986 (.534)

Group of death part 2. Will the pitching staff of 2011 push them into the next round?

Group F
1915 (.592)
1955 (.500)
1982 (.549)
1993 (.599)
1963 (.537)
1974 (.494)
1962 (.503)
1966 (.537)

Will 1915 and everyone's favorite team 1993 fight off 82, 63 and 66 to move on?

Group G
1929 (.464)
1917 (.572)
2008 (.568)
1951 (.474)
1953 (.539)
1965 (.528)
1912 (.480)
2005 (.543)

On paper it could be the latest world series winners for the Phillies of 2008 and the 1917 team as the favorites. Though they won't have an easy time of it.

Group H
1901 (.593)
1980 (.562)
1971 (.448)
1913 (.583)
1970 (.453)
1995 (.479)
1906 (.464)
1914 (.481)

On paper this is a three way race between 1901, 1980 and 1913.

Corrected the multiple 1951 teams that showed in the list, 1 was supposed to be 1971.

Also added a wild card and playoff for each group. Seems to be the only way the game wouldn't crash when I tried to setup the association playoffs.

Group A - 4/1 to 4/7

4/1
1979 (Steve Carlton 0-0, 0.00) @ 1968 (Larry Jackson 0-0, 0.00)
1979 strikes out a total of 14 times but they manage 10 hits and score 6 runs in a 6-4 victory in which they never trailed. Mike Schmidt homered for the 1979 team while Tony Taylor and Clay Dalrymple homered for the 1968 squad, though they could only manage 6 total hits. Carlton allowed 3 earned runs in 7 innings while striking out 10. Jackson was chased in the 5th inning having allowed 5 runs.

1990 (Terry Mulholland 0-0, 0.00) @ 1967 (Jim Bunning 0-0, 0.00)
The 1990 team pounded the ball on their way to a 13-3 victory. Carmelo Martinez and Von Hayes both homered for the 1990 team while Tony Gonzalez homered for the 1967 team. The biggest surprise may have been John Kruk getting a triple. Bunning did not even make it through 3 innings and allowed 6 runs.

1952 (Curt Simmons 0-0, 0.00) @ 1950 (Curt Simmons (0-0, 0.00)
Simmons battles himself. The 1952 team scored 3 in the 2nd and 4 in the 4th as they built a 7-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 8th but the 1950 team sends 11 men to the plate and scores 6 runs to take an 8-7 lead after 8 innings of play. With one out and two men on in the top of the 9th, pinch hitter Johnny Wyrostek crushed a 1-1 pitch 443 feet to right center for a 3 run homerun to give the 1952 team a 10-8 lead. 1950 is retired in order in the bottom of the 9th and 1952 wins 10-8.

1909 (Frank Corridon 0-0, 0.00) @ 1975 (Larry Christenson 0-0, 0.00)
The game remained close and was tied 4-4 going into the 9th. In the top of the 9th Dave Shean brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to give 1909 a 5-4 lead. !975 went down in order in the bottom of the 9th and 1909 wins 5-4.

1954 (Robin Roberts 0-0, 0.00) @ 1998 (Curt Schilling 0-0, 0.00)
Team 1954 jumped on the team from 1998 and pounded out 16 hits in an 8-1 victory behind a strong performance by Robin Roberts who went the distance allowing just 6 hits and struck out 9 while walking no one. 1B Stan Lopata was 3 for 4 with a homerun and 3 RBI's.

1984 (Jerry Koosman 0-0, 0.00) @ 1957 (Harvey Haddix 0-0, 0.00)
Team 1984 took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Juan Samuel led off the game with a double to ignite the inning. They extended it to 4-0 in the 4th and held on for a 5-3 victory. 3B Willie Jones homered for Team 1957 in the loss.

1910 (Earl Moore 0-0, 0.00) @ 2003 (Kevin Millwood 0-0, 0.00)
LF Sherry Magee gave Team 1910 a 1-0 lead in the first with a 2 out solo homerun. The game was close and with the score tied at 2 in the bottom of the 7th 2B Placido Palanco drives home 2 runs with a 2 out double to give Team 2003 a 4-2 lead. They would hang on for the victory. Millwood struck out 9 in 8 innings of work in the win.

2002 (Randy Wolf 0-0, 0.00) @ 1976 (Steve Carlton 0-0, 0.00)
In a shocker, Carlton lasts only 5 innings and gives up 5 runs while Wolf goes 7 innings and allows just 1 as Team 2002 wins easily 7-1. Mike Lieberthal and Pat Burrell each go deep for team 2002.

2009 (Cliff Lee 0-0, 0.00) @ 1911 (Pete Alexander 0-0, 0.00)
Cliff Lee is pounded and gives up 5 runs and 10 hits in under 3 innings of work as 1911 builds a 6-0 lead on their way to a 7-5 victory. Raul Ibanez homered for 2009 to make it a 2 run game in the 8th but that is as close as they got. Team 1911 did it with small ball as they had 18 hits and 14 were singles.

2006 (Brett Myers 0-0, 0.00) @ 2004 (Kevin Millwood 0-0, 0.00)
In a pitcher's duel the Team 2004 led 2-1 going into the 9th. With Wagner on for the save he gets pounded and Team 2006 scores 6 runs with a Chase Utley homerun adding to their lead. They allow a run in the bottom of the 9th but Team 2006 wins 7-3. For Team 2004 Jimmy Rollins was a homerun shy of hitting for the cycle.

2001 (Randy Wolf 0-0, 0.00) @ 1983 (Steve Carlton 0-0, 0.00)
Carlton struggles and allows 4 runs in 5 innings of work as Team 2001 wins easily 7-2. Mike Schmidt and Gary Matthews accounted for Team 1983's only runs with solo homeruns. Team 1983 was held to just 4 hits.

1907 (Tully Sparks 0-0, 0.00) @ 1916 (Pete Alexander 0-0, 0.00)
Team 1916 wins easily by a 9-1 score as Alexander allows just 1 run over 8 innings of work. RF Gavvy Cravath homered for Team 1916.

1905 (Tully Sparks) @ 1994 (Danny Jackson)
Team 1994 jumped to a 7-0 lead after 3 innings. Entering the 9th they led 7-3. In the top of the 9th the first three batters doubled to narrow the gap to 7-5. After a pitching change and ground out there was a runner at third with 1 out. Pinch hitter Fred Abbott flew out to deep center to score the run and bring Team 1905 to within 1 run at 7-6. The rally ended there as the next batter lined out to 3rd to end the game as Team 1994 wins 7-6.

1977 (Steve Carlton) @ 1908 (Lew Moren)
Offense ruled this game as it was a tight battle back and forth. With the score tied at 9-9 in the top of the 9th Larry Bowa doubles home Bob Boone to give Team 1977 a 10-9 lead. Bowa is stranded at 2nd as the game goes to the bottom of the 9th with Team 1977 leading 10-9. Gene Garber comes in to pitch for Team 1977 looking to get the save. After retiring the first two batters John Titus singles to put the tying run at first. Roy Thomas ground the ball to third for the game ending play but Schmidt commits a rare error as he boots the ball to put runners at 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. Sherry Magee falls behind in the count 1-2 and on the next pitch hits a line drive down the line in left, it's deep and just over the fence for the game winning homerun. Team 1908 wins 12-10. Gary Maddox and Larry Bowa each had 4 hits for Team 1977. Mike Schmidt, Tim McCarver and Jay Johnstone each homered for Team 1977. Sherry Magee had three hits for Team 1908 and missed hitting for the cycle by a single.

1978 (Larry Christensen) @ 1987 (Bruce Ruffin)
Larry Christensen goes 8 innings allowing just 1 run on 3 hits as Team 1978 wins 6-2.

1949 (Robin Roberts) @ 1991 (Terry Mulholland)
Pitching was no on display as the teams combine for 23 runs on 27 hits and there were 4 total errors. Team 1949 wins 14-9 as Team 1991 made it a little closer with 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th. Eddie Waitkus and Willie Jones homered for Team 1949. John Kruk and Dave Hollins homered for Team 1991. Dave Hollins missed hitting for a cycle by a double.

2007 (Cole Hamels) @ 2012 (Roy Halladay)
Roy Halladay was cruising through 6 innings with a 2-0 lead but then Team 2007 sent 11 men to the plate in the 7th with the big hit being a grand slam by Shane Victorino to give them a 7-2 lead. Team 2012 scored 3 in the bottom of the 7th to make it 7-5 but they are unable to mount any offense in the final two innings. Team 2007 wins 7-5.

1986 (Bruce Ruffin) @ 2010 (Roy Halladay)
Roy Halladay again ran into trouble in the 7th (the 2010 version this time) as Team 2010 led 3-0 after 6 innings but Team 1986 tied the game on a Bruce Ruffin base clearing double with the bases loaded to tie the game 3-3 (the runs were unearned thanks to 2 errors in the inning). In the bottom of the 7th Wilson Valdez led off with a solo homerun and two batters later Shane Victorino hit a 2 run homerun as Team 2010 takes a 6-3 lead. Team 1986 is unable to respond and Team 2010 wins 6-3.

1999 (Curt Schilling) @ 2011 (Roy Halladay)
Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence each hit solo homeruns to give Team 2011 a 2-0 lead after 3 innings of play. Schilling never looked sharp as he would allow 11 hits over 7 innings but always pitched out of trouble as they would be the only runs he allowed. After tying the game with a pair of runs to make it 2-2 after 6, Mike Lieberthal would single home 2 runs in the 7th to give Team 1999 a 4-2 lead. The Team 1999 bullpen would shut the door and Team 1999 wins 4-2 in the opener.

1964 (Chris Short) @ 1981 (Steve Carlton)
Carlton would not have his best stuff but would go 7 innings and allow only 2 runs on 10 hits with 7 strikeouts. Mike Schmidt and Keith Moreland would homer for Team 1981 as they would provide enough run support for Carlton for a 6-2 victory.

This has turned into a chore, in terms of dynasty. I am going to have to figure out a way that doesn't burn me out.

Hunter Pence of Team 2011 led the Group with a .356 average.

Mike Schmidt of Team 1986 hit 12 homeruns to lead the group.

Team 1980 wins the Group by 1 game (though they had clinched with a couple days left before going on a 3 game losing streak). Team 1970 and Team 1913 were tied and one game ahead of Team 1914 for the Wild Card and all 3 won on the final day as Team 1970 will face Team 1913 for the Wild Card.
