Internet connection quality; need advice

I work from home frequently and I webvpn from home to work. I frequently get a lost connection -- like, multiple times per day. I've got the sneaking suspicion that my cable company is restricting or giving me an intermittent connection despite my rudimentary wi-fi icon assuring me that I'm connected. How do I monitor the "quality" of my internet connection? I suspect my endgame would be to go to the cable company and kindly request that they cease the fuckery.
