I played the hell out of the second version, but the last one didn't look appealing to me.

The TV studio portion of the game has me intrigued for this one.

I find humor that this guy wants $120,000 for a game that is just an upgraded version of the last. There isn't really much to the game in the looks and graphics side. Plus hasn't he been working on this for awhile anyway?

Do games like this have historical modes? Seems like it would be a perfect fit for a game like this, or one of those Music Wars kind of games. Start yourself up in a year, and compete against movies/music that you are already aware of.

What does his contract with Kickstarter look like? If this doesn't fund can he still make the game?

There is no contract that prevents the owner from making the item if it doesn't fund.

The UI in his games is always atrocious. I have purchased all 3 but I doubt I get this one - I never could get into the last one. I assume he knows this won't get funded but it is a good way to introduce his game to people that have never heard of it. not a bad strategy IMO. Finally, that pic of him is at least 15 years old. I remember it being the same pic used for the first game when it came out and I ordered it by mail.

It was being discussed in my "Will HM1 run in Windows 7?" thread. That's probably what he's referring to.

They declared bankruptcy rapidly. Apparently, their strategy of doubling the budget of every failed film and re-releasing it until it was a hit didn't pan out.

I know Carey may some boneheaded statements that turned him into a joke in these parts, but I still have a soft spot in my heart for the guy. He was very involved in his community until I think the time and the criticism got to be too much.

I'll always remember that back about 12 years ago or so I made a comment about the game on a board -- might have been FOFC even -- and he reached out directly to ask me about and we had a cool discussion about the game. As far as one-to-one contact with a game developer, he and Jim are without a doubt the best experiences I've had.

Even 30-40k would be a more reasonable goal and you'd think that would keep you solvent enough to finish developing if it's a 1 man show. 120k is insane.

I agree. I think he lost some customer service skills along the way, but I had an issue and we exchanged some e-mails and I clued him into here and he loved came over, posted some stuff, and got some good press for HM3.

So I still like the guy, and I will get HM4. I'd be supporting the campaign too but with my limited funds post job-loss and now in grad school., again, and its not possible.

235 forum members and 149 Facebook likes. Basically all of these people need to pledge at a $300 level to meet the goal, seems a bit daunting. I'll probably buy it if the game is good. Id think about getting 3 but $30 for a 5? year old game seems pretty high.

Text sims just aren't the kickstarter kind of thing. It's like collection the gum from baseball card packs, an obscure niche of a niche.

I wonder if he keeps his word from his forums that if the game doesn't get funded that he isn't going to make it.

Quote:
The money isn't very much, really. It's 18 months of work, or more.

If HM4 doesn't get funded, there's no HM4. It's simple. It's an indication to me that there isn't enough interest to warrant the time required to create the game.

That's why I did it in a Kickstarter campaign. It was a relatively inexpensive way to determine if there's a market for HM4. If there isn't, that's okay with me.

http://HollywoodMovieStudioGame.com

No active download link for this new game yet, but their the site he posted over at the old mogul forums as of july 9th.

So the answer is yes, he's keeping his word. He's not going to make HM4. He's going to make Hollywood Movie Studio instead. I'm sure they'll be completely different.
