Just looked it up and Greenland is part of the NF Board not FIFA, sorry, my bad. Unless you count the NF Board.

Actually, Curacao became an independant country about a month ago and before that in the sports world was part of the Netherlands Antilles.

Regardless, I don't even mind that it didn't go to the U.S. I had just hoped it would go to a traditional city. While it's nice to build up developing markets, it's also the biggest event in the world's most popular sport. It deserves to be in a major traditional market. That might sound elitist, but I just think it's a disservice to fans across the globe to pass up better locations. This decision is akin to the NFL deciding to have the Super Bowl played in Des Moines, Iowa. |

Qatar has really spared no expense in trying to build themselves up as the middle east's sporting capital during the past decade. They also put in a strong bid for the 2016 Olympics.
They spent $2.8 billion dollars on the 2006 Asian Games (45 nations), and they were able to pull it off successfully. They're hosting the 2011 Asian Cup next year, which should be a good dry run of how well they get to run multi-national football events. Now, they're going to be putting at least $4 billion dollars in building the nine stadiums and renovating three.

No accident that the last Olympics/World Cup the US hosted was the shady Salt Lake City bid. That's just how the game is played now.

Curacao and St. Maarten are still separate countries though, akin to the countries in the UK. St. Maarten is already a member of CONCACAF and one would expect Curacao to follow at some point just like the Netherlands Antilles had their own side. I'd imagine anyone good enough would go play at a super high level would go play for the Oranje while they were still young enough to be developed, but still... |

I'd much rather travel to Qatar to see the WC than Russia. I was looking into teaching in Dubai before my wife landed a job, and I remember reading lots of positive things about both Dubai and Qatar. I'd love to go their during the WC. My father would be 74 then, and hopefully still with me, so I'll take him over there. My wife wouldn't go near there.

Speaking of which ... Gay rights group wants apology from FIFA's Sepp Blatter for comments - ESPN LONDON -- A leading international gay rights group demanded an official apology Tuesday from FIFA following Sepp Blatter's comment about homosexual fans traveling to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup. The president of the world soccer governing body said Monday that gay fans "should refrain from any sexual activities" during the World Cup in Qatar, where homosexual behavior is illegal. Juris Lavrikovs, communications director for the European branch of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, said the comments were "very unfortunate and have left people deeply offended." ... Blatter spoke Monday in South Africa at the launch of a post-2010 World Cup legacy project. He was asked if he could foresee any cultural problems with the tournament being held in Qatar. "I'd say they [gay fans] should refrain from any sexual activities," he said, smiling.

I think the gays, especially the flamboyant ones, should really descend full force on Qatar. Turn it into the Castro street of the middle east. Aside from briefcases loaded with cash, the main appeal of Qatar is that it's a "new/emerging" international locale, and I think that would definitely help in that transition.

They can't possibly move it to January - all the changes that would force in qualifying match dates, let alone the dates of the WC and preparation camps and recovery would fuck up every European (and most non-European) league schedules. That's ridiculous.

This. The whole process is looking like a disaster. But, for $10 mil a pop, I bet they'd agree to hold it in the Sahara Desert with animal bones as soccer goals.

It’s almost like everyone responsible for the decision is suddenly so wealthy that they don’t care about the repercussions. And I expect to see some stupid comment from Blatter in the near future, probably about women this time, to divert attention away from the corruption. He’s a buffoon like a fox.

Yeah, I'm sure it was like this in other cities too but NYC bars were packed left and right for many of the games, not only just USA. They did a nice job embracing the event and marketing to those with backgrounds in different countries, which is no surprise with the amount of money they stood to make. But put that in place when the playoffs are going on and you're unlikely to see any bump in sales.

While this is true most people only have limited time to watch games and they would chose NLF over WC every time unless the US was playing. For example, it is 7 AM and I am getting ready to head to Home Depot so I can fix a shelf, install a towel rack, and put up a baby gate. Then I will take my kid to the aquarium, eat breakfast with him and play for a bit. All before 1:30 so I can then watch the games. If there was a WC game on this morning I would not be watching it. |
