I'm not sure if I read it here or somewhere else but games are to start at 1 am local time in Qatar to play under cooler conditions. This is a bad dream, right?

Seriously? That is just a cluster f*ck.

I guess the most popular game on earth needs the most corrupt governing body on earth.

That will be great for people in US time zones.

At this point I'm all-in for a player boycott of Qatar.

Russia is going to end up like the Olympics - not great, but not a train-wreck.

Between the human rights shit and the changing of the schedule and everything, I think Qatar just needs to not happen.

Did anyone really think Qatar wasn't getting the WC? I mean it was really just wishful thinking.

I dunno. If they let a lot of local fans in (and they'll really have to), I expect to see a lot of the racist abuse we've seen from their fans in recent years, in both their own league and European competition. That'll be a little bit of a train wreck.

Fair enough.

The only real way it doesn't happen is if UEFA doesn't want to participate. But it sounds like UEFA's been convinced to play ball (no pun intended), as evidenced by being willing to push back European competition to accommodate a winter WC.

Good point about the racism - I hadn't thought about that.

Well, we thought it was possible but now it's true:

The Qatar World Cup Will Be Held In The Winter

It's gonna fuck up everything.

The interesting thing is this:

Quote:
This decision seems like it will fuck up many soccer leagues' domestic schedules, because it will, but according to Wahl, it won't. Says Wahl, "The current plan is for only one European club season to be impacted schedule-wise, which the clubs are hoping to achieve by cutting some international dates."

So cutting, what... 4-5 international dates in the Fall? I know that Germany, for one, has a winter break. I guess this gives every league a winter break.

I'm not at all surprised by it moving to the winter, in fact I'd go so far as to say that a lot of the leagues without a winter break will be pleased to see that announced (and were probably consulted on it being an option).

The Premiership has 'mooted' a winter break a few times, but the supporters hate the idea - this allows them to get one, but to blame it on FIFA .... then to keep it afterwards ...

Doha, Qatar is 8 hours ahead of EST (they are at GMT+3). So, if the games are at... 1pm, 4pm, and 7pm there - that's 5am, 8am, and 11am here (in the East Coast). That could just work.

This guy should sell properties. "Experience a true Qatari ethnic experience, sleeping under the stars!"

Translation: The already insane hotel building we've started, which will need to be double again before the cup, and will be sure to feature in click-bait "You'll never guess what the abandoned Qatari World Cup sites look like now" articles on Gawker 10 years after the games will still not be enough, so we're going to erect non-air-conditioned tents in a field to house the rest.

On the plus side, fewer slaves will (probably) die erecting the tents.

That's actually at least a practical solution as opposed to building a new stadium only to not use it later, good on you Ekaterinburg.

And the view isn't any worse than the upper levels in a big stadium (50k+), although i wouldn't wanna be there if we get one of the eastern european flash-flood type rain episodes

Concacaf is pretty well fucked.

Quote:
we know that had the USMNT qualified, they’d have gone into Group G for rematches with Belgium and England.

Which would have been fun.
