Astros trade Hidalgo to Mets
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1823843
What a boneheaded trade for the Astros. Hidalgo makes $12 million this season and has a $15 million team option w/ $2 million buyout, so since they've played almost half the season, he's probably gotten about $5 million so far. They send the Mets $4 million to help pay for it, and then take back David Weathers and his $4 million contract. So, the Astros save about $1 million total. This makes absolutely no sense unless I've missed something. Hidalgo isn't worth $12-15 million/season, but he's a very good outfielder with a cannon arm. Weathers is a replacement level reliever. If Jason Lane gets Hidalgo's PT and does what people have expected for several years, that helps, but knowing bonehead Jimy Williams he'll probably platoon Merced and Palmeiro. AHHHHHHHHHH

Or, you could look at it as - they saved $1M, plus traded a spare part they didn't need (he's been relegated to part time at this point, anyway) for bullpen depth, which they need.

Except that the only reason he's a spare part is because Jimy Williams is an idiot, and David Weathers is not much depth for a bullpen.

Very interesting.
What always struck me about Hidalgo was his inconsistency. He'd tear you to pieces one series and then be invisible the next. But I'm glad he's gone from the Central.

The Mets made a good trade? There must be some mistake.

Ah, thanks. I hadn't been following them too closely as I've lost most of my interest in baseball.

i wish if they were gonna make any trades it'd be for another SP. Hidalgo is having a sub-par year, and it won't help that Shea is a pitcher's park where offense goes to die.
they should be focusing on Freddie Garcia. |

I would like to hear Jeeber's take on this trade as I'm baffled.

But they need hitting more than pitching. They have the best ERA in the majors, but are 27th in runs and OPS (2nd to last in the NL). They need to get some hitting. Hidalgo isn't exactly breaking the bank, but every bit helps.

Weathers wouldn't have been used to make a run at a SP anyway, especially someone like Garcia (not even a fan of his, BTW). Neyer broke down the trade financially...and I believe once you take out Weathers' salary, the Mets are paying Hidalgo $3.5 million for the rest of the season. Not bad for a guy who, even being sub-par this year, is better than anything we have now, and has the POTENTIAL to be a very good player (and adds a hell of an arm to RF). And he was obtained for nothing. Add in that Reyes should FINALLY be coming back this weekend, and the Mets basically added a #2 and a #5 hitter to the line-up. Kaz-Reyes (once accustomed)-Floyd-Piazza-Hidalgo is much better than what we've been lining up with all season. Here's another thought...Let's say over the next month, Hidalgo shows the skills that led him to that monster contract. He hits .330 with 7 HRs and 25 RBIs, but the Mets pitching staff implodes, and they fall well out of the race, to the point where they go from "buyers" to "sellers." Maybe they can pawn Hidalgo off on someone if they kick in the cash for the buy-out and get a prospect or two that would be better than they would have been able to get for the FA-to-be Weathers. |

Well, look at who we've got. Hideo Nomo, who's struggled all year with his velocity and command. He's had trouble making it out of the 3rd inning. Odalis Perez has been lights out. Kaz Ishii has walked a ton of hitters, but has generally been good for 7 innings, and has won us a bunch of games. Jose Lima, nothin' against him, but he's been inconsistent. He had a brilliant stretch as a starter, and he had a cruddy stretch as a starter. If we see the brilliant Lima, so much the better. Jeff Weaver, same thing. He's great for six innings, but usually has one bad inning per start, which puts more pressure on the offense.
We have a fantastic bullpen, if we can hand over the game with the lead, but yeah, having an extra quality SP around wouldn't hurt at all. |

Hidalgo might have the best arm in the majors. I'll be interested to see how he does for the Mets. After watching Lane last night, the Astros might be on to something.

Since its the Marlins (and Florida in general). He'll go out and pitch 101 MVP like he used to. Except this time it won't be as straight as an arrow, it will have movement. I hate Florida. Comon, Chad Fox revived his career there for gods sake. |

Perhaps another SP wouldn't hurt, but that isn't what the Dodgers need to focus on. The Dodgers have the 2nd best ERA in the majors. It's their hitting that is the problem (still).

Sigh...
I've been a Jason Lane fan for several years now and have wanted to see what he can do with everyday playing time, but I would have thought that the Astros could have gotten a lot more talent for Doggie than they did. I understand trying to free up a little cash, but at least get some decent players out of the deal...
