And just like that we've gotten over half an inch in about 15 minutes and it looks like the inside of a giant snow globe outside. Radar suggests a solid hour or so of this, so we could get a very quick 3"-4".

Picked up nearly 3" in less than an hour and the hole in the radar filled in suggesting this could last another 45-60 minutes at least.

We have at least 6 inches here and it is still coming down rapidly and is expected to continue for a few hours. New "forecasts" from weathermen is 8-12 inches in our area.

California is set to endure an 'Atmospheric River' event this weekend, dumping as many as 18" of rain in some parts. For places who get less than 6" annually, there are huge flash flood, mudslide, and rockslide warnings all over the place.

Got in to Newark from Panama to this awesomeness. Flight home cancelled, number 30 on the stand by list for Chicago. Didn't even get close. Now I'm on a flight to Detroit where I hope I can make a right connection and double cross my pinkies that there's a seat to Cincinnati. This is not fun after a work week.

the snow in the south changed my schedule for coming up here... now the ice is gonna change my schedule going back. I'm in Indiana for a couple days, was going to leave on Saturday to drive back to Raleigh. The projected ice in southern Indiana and Ohio Saturday is probably going to cause me to leave Friday night unless things change.

We had a storm with that level of ice in 2003. We didn't have power for five days. It was awful.

They just added the north and west end of Missouri to the Ice Storm Warning. Expecting a half inch of ice here.

We're closing my business on Sunday. Best price on tickets for the Chiefs game a week ago was around $150 for the top row of the stadium. Now, with the ice storm forecasts getting worse, you can get into most of the upper deck for around $30. I'll admit it. I have the itch to go at those prices, even if it takes 2 hours that day to make what normally is a 20 minute drive.

When we had one inch of ice, we were without power for seven days.

On a sobering note, there's large areas of Joplin that don't have any trees due to the tornado, which should help from a power perspective.

And they missed it by 1.99 inches. It's just been a cold, nasty rain with minimal ice accumulation. Was expecting an '08 ice storm where power was out for weeks in some areas. Glad we didn't get hit (so far anyway), but this has been quite the missed forecast.

Good deal. I think everything went North. We got about 1/2 an inch. But the main roads are not terrible. Not that I would go out.

We got more than predicted.

Those where it's right around 32F are the hardest ones to predict. When they miss badly up in Boston it's usually for the same reason, especially when people take the predicted rain/snow line as gospel, because you can often see 12 inches of snow in one town and then 3 or less a 20 minute drive east closer to the coast.

Shout out to Winnipeg in the latest XKCD what if?

Quote:
If you happen to live in the Canadian city of Winnipeg, you can check this experimentally. The winter temperature at night in Winnipeg is about the same as the inside of a freezer, so the environment there effectively simulates a freezer with infinite capacity to absorb heat. Suppose you put a toaster out on your porch one night, plugged in by an extension cord, and leave it running for a few hours, going outside every so often to collect the toast and put in some fresh bread. What will happen? Simple: You'll quickly be eaten by wolves.

Well, that was a doozy of a storm last night/this morning. Tornado Watch/SvTS Warn at 330a, then right as the kids were about to go to school a blistering squall line came through with at point registering 85mph, that just ripped roofs off, and knocked down 50ft trees. Our subdivision was super lucky, just a quarter mile west there was substantial damage. The kids told a story of a bus driver emptying the bus into a families basement to get out of the weather. It ended up cancelling school in 2 of the 3 NKY counties, and many schools were cancelled today because of flooding. It's been a wild couple of days here in Cincy/NKY.

Toaster vs. Freezer

Haha that's kind of awesome. It also feels self-evident to someone who has spent enough time in the cold, but I enjoyed reading the proper science behind it.

In severe weather news, this winter has been pretty weird here in the 'Peg. We've had a lot of abnormally warm weather, to the point that using the outside like a big extra freezer hasn't worked as well as normal (we put half of a DQ ice cream cake out on the top of the BBQ after my mom's birthday the other day only to find it all melted a couple days later). We also had a couple 10 day spells of brutal cold (-30ish) back around Christmas and a bit in January. But we have had very, very little of the -7 to -15 stuff, which is ultimately the best winter weather for actually doing winter things, like outdoor skating, tobogganing, etc. As an adult that isn't super outdoorsy I think I prefer it, but I sort of feel like it would suck if I was a kid.

I almost want to wander up to Boston if this thing hits. I imagine St. Patrick's Day celebrations would be the perfect end to a couple of days of blizzard cleanup.

Hate snow. This was a relatively good winter, and now we get crapped on right at the end. Can't deal with it anymore.

All the forecast models today were downgrading snow in the DC area, with my location being considered more likely to have sleet and freezing rain. While it's still too cold to stick, it's been snowing fairly hard for 45 minutes already.

Looking at 8-14 and up to 75 mph winds here along the CT shoreline. Good times. Statewide travel ban sets in at 5am tomorrow. So if you were inexplicably wishing to travel through Connecticut tomorrow, don't.

We got 2.5 inches snow and a ton of ice....But it's all melting now, but once either refreezes we could have days of ice. Then 60 on Saturday.

Same here. The melting and refreezing is going to be the problem. Our total was less because it turned to sleet then rain for several hours, washing out some of the snow.

I'm guessing about 20 inches, but the blowing makes the total a little unreliable. It's a damn lot, that's for sure!

Only 7 inches in Central New Jersey, but sleet mixed in to make for heavy shoveling snow.

They've let kids out of school early today due to severe weather/possible tornadoes. Is this a thing that has always happened?

They called for the same weather Monday and it was just steady rain with a few alleged tornadoes that did no damage. So far the same today.

I'm pretty much at the point to where I just assume the opposite of what the weather people say on TV. Tornadoes/hail/death, mild rain. Mild rain, hail. Snowstorm, maybe a dusting. Maybe a dusting, snowed under. The fact that most got their degrees from Mississippi State makes me not believe them.
