Poker Night
I am thinking about hosting a poker tournament here for our friends. I was thinking about pay and a free tournament. The buy-in for the pay tournament would be decided by the people playing. I was thinking about a small by-in maybe somewhere in the 5-20 dollar range.
I was thinking of payouts like 70% for first place, and 30% for second place. I have a pay-pal account, and everyone could just send me the buy-in money. We would play at one of the free poker sites. Anyone know of a site that allows free private tournament style tables? Even better if they allow free private multi-table tournaments Also we would need to decide how to handle more than 8 players. I think most sites have 8 players max at a table. I dont know if we would be able to carryover chips from one table to the other. If so, then more than 8 players would be out, cause it just doesnt seem right any other way. Thoughts? Suggestions? Lets just shoot for 10 people wanting to play and go from there. It will be on a first come first serve basis. Please reply with a good time you can play. Also please reply with how much you would like to spend. Interested Khwit M,W,TH evenings 5-10 dollars Marmel M-W evenings. 5-20 dollars Airhog M-TH evenings. 5-10 dollars Tredwell TU,TH evenings 5-10 dollars Primelord TU evenings 5-25 dollars JimJam19 M-F evenings 5-25 dollars Analbumcover M-TH evenings any amount. ctmason T-TH evenings any amount. sabotai M,W,Th evenings 5-20 HornsManiac M-F evenings any amount Rpi-Fan M-F evenings 5-15 dollars Clebrownsfan Also we are going to play at http://www.pokerroom.com/index.php you should go ahead and make an account and play a few hands. we cant reserve a table, so I dont know where we will play at, Hopefully I can just post here, a few minutes before the starting time, and you guys can find the table and join.

Maybe 8 at a time is the best way to go, at least to get started. If things really got rolling, you could do four "qualifier" tables, with two advancing from each. But maybe you start at the bottom, and work your way up.

I'd love to do that. It would probably be a good idea to do a really small buy-in for the first time (I say $5). But this sounds fun.

Quiksand: yeah, but I would really like to model it after a real tournament. Here is the only problem I have with qualifier tournaments. You cannot carry over your chips to the next round, thus eliminating any advantage you have gained. I have only figured out one semi solution to the problem, and its ugly, and we wouldnt be able to play tournament style.

If we kept the ante's relatively small, I would be interested.
Maybe a set schedule would be cool, with a few $5 or $10 tourneys leading up to a large "WSOP" where the ante was $20-$30, and you must have participated in 50% of the smaller ones to qualify. Just a few ideas. Edit to add: I wouldn't want to see the ante's get too big, as I don't want to give or take that much money from fellow FOFC'ers, but a little something on the line makes things a bit more competative and interesting, and will also weed out quitters, etc...

Well I looked at all the different poker sites that offer texas hold em. A few do have multi-table tournaments, but no way to start your own private table. Acutally I know of only one place that allows private games, and that is Yahoo. I do know some people in the gambling newsgroup, so I will ask around there. I dont think yahoo is setup for any sort of tournament play. We might just have to find an alternate way to do the tournament.
I did find a few places that allow private tables, but only with real money, and no tournaments.

Okay I found a site that allows the setup of a private tournament. The only downside is we would have to buy chips at their site, and you cannot purchase less than 50 dollars in chips and you have to withdrawl at least 50 dollars in chips. Im beginning to think that trying to setup a multi-tournament table is going to be tough.
Lets just shoot for 10 people wanting to play and go from there. It will be on a first come first serve basis. Please reply with a good time you can play. Also please reply with how much you would like to spend. Interested Khwit Marmel M,W evenings. 5-20 dollars Airhog M-TH evenings. 5 dollars Tredwell TU-TH. 5-10 dollars Primelord TU 5-25 dollars

I'm interested. Tuesday, Thursday evenings are best. I'm cheap, so 5-10 is my range.

I might be interested. How long would a typical session run?
Also, how "hard core" are you guys in terms of poker? I have played casual poker for years with my friends, but I'm not sure I am up to speed on more formal games.

Addendum: Monday and Wednesday are best for me, but I can also attend Tuesday (which seems pretty popular) and Thursday, but only if it ends before 9pm, EST.

Do you have a CSI fetish? Or is it Will and Grace? I'd prefer $5, but $10 would be okay too. I also like that the 2nd place winner gets something. AH, your idea of 70-30 or so sounds good to me. I prefer Monday, Wednesday or Thursday nights. |

Available any weeknight after 9pm EST. Interested in $5-$15 buy-in.

well that might work. I put you down as an alternate. If we need 1 more to play, then you can fill in. I just dont want the hassle of having to add money to my paypal account.

Okay we need 1 or 2 more people to play. I listed Rpi-fan as an alternate, but if we dont get 2 people to play, Ill cover his buy-in and he can pay me with a money order.

I have seen this mentioned many times before on here and always hoped it would materialize, but never did.
I am willing to play in the evenings and the buy in amount doesn't matter to me. Weekdays are better for me, but a weekend could be arranged as well. HornsManiac |

Okay, we now have ten people, I wouldnt mind having a few more alternates though. I will look at the times everyone has given me, and try to come up with some dates for people to vote on...

Okay the two most popular dates are Wednesday and Thursday, both recieving the nod 8 times.
So I have two possible dates. 1. 16th of april at 9pm est. 2. 17th of april at 9pm est. I think we should have a test run, so how about this thursday the 10th of april. Im still hoping to get a few more people, because we have to have 10 people show up to play a tournament.

While it's a bit too rich for my blood (some of us have to live on less than $10K per year of student loans), I'm curious to look in on it. Someone going to be posting a dynasty or two?

your more then welcome too. If your familiar with how the tables work at pokerroom.com then you know that I need all 10 guys to show up at a table rather quickly, otherwise we could get non-money players in the mix, which wouldnt work.

well for the first money game, we will probably keep the stakes low, like 5 dollars. If there is enough interest for a smaller buy-in, we could do one of those too.

Poker is never fun if you are not really gambling. I would rather not even play than play for "fun." Poker is about really risking something when you make decisions. So I was playing a but last night on pokerroom for real money. I deposited $100 and decided to start small and played @ the $1-2 table. I started playing and feeling the table... folding a lot and waiting for my moment to play my first hand. The first hand I played I had a K-J of hearts.
The flop came and 2 hearts came up (forgot the value) then the Turn and another heart came up for my king high flush. Two people called my bet (??) and the River came up. I bet on my K high flush and someone raised me. There were no possibilities of a full house or a straight flush so I raised them back. They called and I beat their straight. First hand I stayed in after the Flop and I won $47. Not bad!! I played for about and hour and cashed out $170… not a bad nights work
