OPENING SEASON COMMENTS
I lose two players:
T Bo Dawkins leaves over lack of playing time, and P Emmanuel Greene gets suspended for accepting money from a booster club member. I'm left without a good punter. Dawkins's departure is inconsequential, though. He was a walk-on.
ACADEMICS: 57 reputation, 23rd overall ranking. We improve 4 more points in reputation, and 12 more spots in ranking. Very nice. We're in the Top 20 in four subjects now.
PRESTIGE: 86. We lose one point.

Ugh. We get to play both the Gators and the Vols in the regular season this year. Florida, UT and USC all look like they have the potential to win the East. Auburn is the only team in the West that looks good enough on paper to challenge us. Florida's QB Brent Dinkins (84/88) looks like he could be the star of the conference this year.

ROSTER
(Starters bold-faced and underlined, red-shirts appear red and italicized.)

QUARTERBACKS
(SCOUT: Good)
Player#PosEligCurrent EstimateFuture Estimate
Harrison, Glen15QB85272
O'Neal, Isaac5QBJR(RS)4564
Coleman, Glenn17QBSO(RS)2454
Griffin, Todd13QBFR1853
Romund, J.R.14QB(WO)FR839

Interesting QB situation. According to numbers, Harrison should be the starter, but looking at the bars, I'd go with either O'Neal or Coleman. Coleman's green bars make him look like a potential superstar, as a matter of fact. I'll start the season with Harrison at the helm, but won't hesitate to change directions.

BACKS
(SCOUT: Excellent)
Flowers, Max46RBSO(RS)61100
Collins, Seth34RBJR(RS)5774
Thaphituck, Jack39RB85668
Stone, Alonzo20RB(WO)SR(RS)3551
Ross, Casey27RB(WO)SR(RS)99
May, Jim24FBJR(RS)7175
Small, Alan48FB84851
Patton, Wendell30FB(WO)SO(RS)2537

The QB situation is less of a concern than it might be, due to the presence of our first #1-at-his-position player, Max Flowers. He'll be given the opportunity to prove himself, and Collins and Thaphituck should be more then capable backups. For the first time since starting this challenge, I think my offense will be able to rely heavily on the run. FB May averaged 4.8 ypc last year, and he'll get his share of carries this year as well.

RECEIVERS
(SCOUT: Excellent)

Branch looks like he could be a pretty solid starter for us at TE, and if Dunlap and Bagwell can stay healthy, we should have *NO* complaints at WR. They've both had >1,100 yard seasons. Burt Palmer looks like he could be a total superstar for us.

OFFENSIVE LINE
(SCOUT: Pretty Good)

I don't know that this offensive line is going to be anything special, but they shouldn't stink, either. My recruiting last year wasn't impressive, so I'd really like to land multiple good linemen this year.

Greene's managing to get himself suspended certainly isn't helpful to us. Foreman was All-SEC.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Baughman, McKinney, and Rodriguez look firmly entrenched as starters. Murray is going to have to prove himself. The freshmen this year don't inspire much confidence. Gotta step it up in recruiting on the DL..

Looks like the best set of starting linebackers since I started this challenge, and they've got a pretty decent set of backups, too. Nice.

We should remain pretty solid in the defensive backfield this year. Plus, the youngsters look pretty doggone good, too.

OVERALL ROSTER THOUGHTS
The defense, while not as good on paper as last year's, still looks pretty strong. The offense has question marks at offensive line and QB. If either of those question marks can be turned into exclamation points, we could find ourselves back in the Top 10.

Yep, back in the saddle, and ready to take the Tide to glory, and to continue cursing the name of Bob Lewandowski!

RECRUITING UPDATE
SCHOLLIES TO OFFER: QB, RB, FB, TE, WR, C, G, T, P, DE, DT, OLB, CB, S
WALK-ONS TO INDUCE: ILB

OTHER SEC ACTION THIS WEEK
None.

OUR GAME: Troy State (0-0) at #12 Alabama (0-0) (-8) [TV3]
This one was *much* closer than it should have been. in fact, we trailed 7-6 going into the fourth quarter. The defense was stellar, allowing only 213 total yards, but the offense struggled on the ground (40 x 79), although Flowers had a pretty solid day with 22 carries for 99 yards. The rest of the ground game stunk. We won this won 14-10 when all was said and done.

POST-GAME INJURY REPORT
(*--new injury this week)
No injuries whatsoever.

MLB Andy Copeland led the way with 3 of the team's 6 sacks on the day..

Hey Skydog, how did the pro version of your challenge go? I've been thinking about doing a similar thing, but only getting players on my pro team that went to North and South Carolina schools. I figure that would be a lot more restrictive than the entire SEC, and maybe too hard, though there are usually some good draft picks each year from those schools.

There's a link to the pro version in the first post in this thread. It took me until Year 6 to make the playoffs, and I'm enjoying the extra layer of strategy added by getting to see the players 2-3 years in advance, as opposed to simply during free agency. I have to think through draft pick trades through the window of "Hmmm....Eric Daft, who'll graduate in two years, MAY be a franchise QB. I need to make sure I have enough picks to trade up that year." Since the player pool is much more limited than the whole of the draft class, I have to be much more intentional about player acquisitions.

This was a good week for us. A championship team usually has a few stars, and solid players elsewhere, with no real holes. So far, this class has no gaping holes in it. Everyone looks like they'll be at least solid.

OTHER SEC ACTION THIS WEEK
UT 34, LSU 10
Ol' Miss 37, Vandy 17
Kentucky 12, Mississippi St. 10

OUR GAME: #7 Florida (7-1) (-6) at #12 Alabama (7-1) [TV2]
It wasn't pretty, but we get a big, big win at home over the Gators! Harrison threw for 383 yards, 5 TD's and 5 INT's on the day, and Florida had four turnovers as well. The win sews up the SEC West for us, and also virtually assures us that we don't have to play Florida--probably the best team in the SEC this year--in the SEC Championship game.

OUR GAME: #9 Alabama (8-1) (-27) at Auburn (1-7)
This is unfathomable. WE were cruising, up 20-6 at the start of the fourth quarter, but then the wheels came off. Three fourth-quarter turnovers led to three War Chicken scores, and those fags actually won the game. Auburn 27, Alabama 20, and darkness descends over the land.

Lofton is still leaving us hanging, waiting for his decision.

OTHER SEC ACTION THIS WEEK
None.

OUR GAME: #13 Tennessee (9-2) (-3) vs. #10 Alabama (9-2) [TV2].
In a hard-fought battle, it was 24-24 at the end of regulation. OLB Quentin Raymond came up with big stops on 3rd and 2 and 4th and 1 in UT's first OT possession, and then Glen Harrison hit Daryl Bagwell for 25 yards and a TD on our first play of overtime to give us the 30-24 win, and our 4th straight SEC Championship!

POST-GAME INJURY REPORT
(*--new injury this week)
All that matters for this one is that WR Preston Dunlap suffered a high ankle sprain this week, and will probably miss our Bowl Game.

Also, fwiw, since I don't do a Week 16 report, I'll go ahead and report that Bernard Lofton completed our recruiting class by signing in that week, along with a walk-on ILB.
