Silly sh#t
So, I was at 7-11 today (yeah, they've got 7-11's in Japan).
I bought a couple of corn dogs for dinner (they're called American Dogs here-- but that's not the silly shit, I'm getting to it). I also bought a pint of iced tea (actually, it's called lemon tea here and it was 500ml-- they use metric-- also not the silly shit). I also bought a quart (1l) of Orange juice so I'd have some juice for breakfast for the next couple of days. Here's the silly shit-- wait for it... The clerk put two straws in the bag. Who the hell sticks a straw in a one liter orange juice carton?! Anybody else have any silly ass thing happen to them recently? |

Just the standard fast food experience: either (a) no napkins or requested condiments, or (b) 500 napkins and oodles of unrequested condiments

Don't think so. The straws were seperate lengths. They gave me one that was the juice carton/can lentgh and one that was the soda bottle length. So I believe it was a conscious decision. I'm not saying it was the most moronic thing ever done. I'm just saying that it struck me as extremely silly. |

Yeah. I was reading through my favorite set of forums while a compile was going on, and read some silly thread about straws in orange juice cartons.

By the way, if you want to hear something that is stupid...
I've been in Japan for some time now. I live in a small town near Kobe. Anyway, considering that the black population here is-- like-- me, I am a fairly noticeable figure. It's a small town, as I said, only about 300,000 people here. There aren't many decent eateries near where I work, which is the center of town. So I go to all of them fairly often. I had been living here for about three years when I got a new coworker. This guy is Chinese-American. But he looks remarkably like a native, something which not all Chinese people do. But he spoke no Japanese at all when he first arrived. So I showed him around. I took him to all the lunch spots I frequented-- frequented over the course of three years (speaking Japanese, and the only black guy in town). I took him to these places and quite obviously translated the menus for him and explained what the waitresses said to us. Now, despite the fact that I was obviously translating for him, despite the fact that he tried to tell them in his terrible heavily American-accented Japanese that he was an American, and despite the fact that we kept coming back to these same places with, for the most part, the same service staffs, at the end of every order the waitress would turn from me, who had just done all the talking in Japanese, to him and ask if the order was okay. I'm talking nearly every time at nearly every place. These are places that we were going to two or three times a week sometimes. And fiive months later they were still pulling this shit. I realize it was out their experience but you'd figure after going through it twenty or thirty times some of these people would get it through their heads: black guy speaks my language, guy that looks like he should speak it doesn't. That was one of those things that started off silly and then just got annoying. |

I thought starting this thread would get it off my mind so that I could sleep (it's 2:15 AM here).
But now I feel like Skydog doing one of his rants about parents/permission slips/instructions before one those infamous camping trips/retreats. I think there might have been too many slashes in that post. Last edited by oykib : 10-28-2005 at 12:19 PM. |

I thought the requisite "I'm drunk" thread came a little early this week.

You should go back and obtain as many different sized beverages in order to maximize your straw potential.
Pour down center

Multi-length straws? How can we realistically be expected to compete with the Japanese? |
