UPDATE - Prayer Request

We just found out that my son's babysitter, Heather, has been diagnosed with cancer. She is only 14 and a freshman in high school. We don't know what kind of cancer it is yet, but we do know it started in her femur and has spread to her hip joint and also to her lungs. She'll be starting chemo next week and the dr's have said she'll have to undergo at least 40 weeks. Needless to say things don't look good. I'll update as I get more information, but she could use all the prayers and good thoughts she can get right now.

That sucks. Big time.

I'll pray for her and her family. I can't imagine. My son is 15... it chills me to even think of that...

At that age and if it really started in her Femur, it is most likely Osteosarcoma which doesn't have a good survival rate, particularly if it has spread

I'll be sure to include her in my prayers.

I'll say a prayer for her too. Hard to believe she could have all these problems at 14. Scary, and sad...

Hopefully they caught it in time. I hope her parents can afford the treatments.

UPDATE:

The biopsy on her right leg was malignant along with her lung. They still have not received the final pathology report but initial findings point toward Ewing's Sarcoma.

If anyone knows anything about Ewing's Sarcoma, please fill me in...I will be doing some online research, but information in plain english instead of dr. speak would be very helpful

Thank you for all your prayers and good wishes...keep them coming!

Ewing's Sarcoma is the second most common type of "bone cancer." It is much less common than Osteosarcoma. It accounts for about 10-15% of bone cancers in children. The peak incidence is about 15 years old from what I remember, but I'd have to check that. About 50% of cases are successfully treated if there is no metastatic lesions (i.e. it hasn't spread.) The survivor rates differ depending upon where it has spread. The fact that is has spread to her lungs is a bad sign

She'll be in my prayers as will you all.

Heather has been going through this for a little over 5 months now, and has been amazing and an inspiration to everyone who knows her. She completed radiation last week and after some time to let her body heal, she enters the hospital this morning for a week of intensive chemo immediately followed by a Stem Cell Transplant. This is very aggressive and Heather will be in isolation for about 6 weeks. Everyone please send some prayers and positive thoughts to Atlanta for this amazing girl and her family.

If anyone is interested in reading her story and keeping up with her treatment, her webpage is:
