FOFC WoW Character List
If you'd like to let other FOFCers know who your World of Warcraft characters are, make a post in this thread. I'll keep the list updated. Feel free to post level changes as well, if you want to keep them up-to-date. To help enter things, if you could post things in the following order, it would be greatly appreciated: Character Race Class Alignment Level Server (No need to post all your characters here, just the ones that you'd like other FOFCers to be able to find in the game.) Loblo is now level 20 and about 130 in mining and blacksmithing. Paladin is a fun class so far...rogue is the only other class that interests me at this point. Currently working quests in Redridge Mountains.
A bummer that there is no pally/sk class for the Horde. Last edited by Bad-example : 01-07-2005 at 01:37 AM. |

Started playing an undead mage. Fun character. Can deal a lot of high damage from distance. Can't let the enemy in close though, or I'm toast, fast. Plenty of room for humor, too. Good times. |

I have a ton of characters, but the two that I play most often are:
Kelan - Night Elf Hunter - Level 21 - Lothar Mortia - Undead Warlock - Level 13 - Bronzebeard I have a character of every class up to at least level 10 and on different servers, so if you're there, I most likely am as well.

Boricua: Level 14 Warlock on the Stormrage server. And this is kind of off topic, I know but has ANYBODY noticed how much a copy of World of Warcraft is going for on eBay these days? The link below shows one copy, factory sealed going for $102, with 26 bids! Talk about crazy ...

Still fleshing this out, but this is what I've got so far, after about 50 hours of play total... Good stuff 1. The shear immensity of the WoW world cannot be overstated. Massive does not even begin to describe the world. It makes Morrowind look like a sandbox. My highest level character has gotten to Level 20 in about 35 hours of play. She is probably two hours away from finishing the quests in the second “area” she has been to. And get this: there are 44 areas in the game world. Not all areas are as fleshed out as the two I’ve been in, some horde areas aren’t as playable for my character, and probably 10 hours of my 35 hours with this character has been lost due to my newbie inefficiency, but still, a conservative estimate would say that there are at least 300 hours worth of game world to explore and static quests to do from one character’s perspective alone. Play a character or two from the horde side and you’ve probably got another 200 hours of new content. To give you even another idea of the game's size: I bought the strategy guide, which is an 8.5" by 11", 432-page phone book of guide, all in relatively small print. This tome is totally inadequate in describing the game world. It would need to be three times the size in order to cover the world in any depth. The world is also tremendously varied. The verdant shadowy forests of the Night Elves look and feel completely different than the ochre wasteland of the Trolls. The heavy gray of the Forsaken’s land is much different than the bright green medieval woods of the Humans. The sense of exploration the game offers is unparalleled. 2. Character development is complex, intuitive, and rewarding. 3. Solo play works. 4. Game is stable, and gameplay (for me, anyway) has been nearly lag free. 5. Playing in short time bursts works great. 6. Interaction can be a blast. People for the most part are friendly (at least on the role playing servers where I've played). There are a lot of high quality guilds, and there is a surprisingly large number of mature, interesting players. 7. Quests are excellent. 8. The entire game exudes quality and care. There is great attention to detail in every aspect of gameplay. 9. The trailer for the game rocks. Really. It is the only game trailer I have ever watched more than once. The Negatives: 1. A vast majority of the gamers is rushing around on a frantic leveling treadmill. 2. The maturity level of the average gamer is relatively low. You can take the leetspeak out of the world, but you can't take the leet out of the gamer. 3. Even on the role-playing servers, there is relatively little role-playing. 4. Combat, although complex, is not necessarily varied. 5. There is at present no dynamic content, which translates into the player having negligible impact on the world around him. Coming from a single-player experience where the gamer’s character dramatically alters the gameworld to WoW, where monsters I defeat often respawn on top of me before I’ve cleared the area, I’ve had to adjust my focus to other things in order to get the most enjoyment out of the game. Once I accepted that only the gamers’ characters will change in the gameworld, I was able to have a lot more fun. 6. The static, respawning nature of the gameworld makes true role-playing difficult. 7. The graphics are sufficient, but not cutting edge. Overall... I've been really surprised at how enjoyable WoW has been for me. It has been a long time since I've had this much fun playing a game. At 50 hours of play, my interest meter is still sky high. My new copy of Football Manager, my half-complete Civ 3 game, and all my other games have collected dust since WoW's arrival. The other pleasant aspect for me is that I don't feel like I've become addicted to the game. There are lots of natural breaks in the game, places where it makes sense to teleport back to your inn, sell stuff, and call it a day. You can have a very good time playing the game for only 20-30 minutes a day. I play for a couple hours before going to bed (which is generally all the gaming time I have) and the occasional 30-minute break during the workday, and have been able to stop within reason most nights. This game gets a big, big thumbs up from me. As far as new content goes to keep the game fresh... The world is so immense that I think I could play this game for a good half year and still not run out of things to see and do. The character classes are also varied, and gameplay is different depending on your character/faction. There is literally ten games worth of content in this game (which is good, because with the monthly fee, you end up paying five games' worth of money in a year). In any case, Blizzard is still finishing up some of the content (battlegrounds) that was supposed to be in the original game, but they have spoken about making new content in the future (aka, expansion packs). This is Mrs. Schmidty (or Carrie) Thanks to Jason pestering me to try WOW, I'm now addicted. You can find me getting my crack fix as Chauncey (of the Detroit Pistons) a 12th level Undead Warrior. My character is a real ugly bitch that likes to kick a little ass on Bronzebeard.

I'd like to expand a bit on Godzilla's good post.
I'd agree with every one of his Pros except one. Your game performance seems to vary greatly by which server you're on. There are quite a few that crash often, others that have huge queues and others that just get very laggy. I'm lucky that I only have to deal with the lag...but others have queues of 1500 players when they try to log on. On the Cons, I agree with them all except the maturity level. It's no different than any other MMORPG and is extremely dependent on who you're playing with. And here's a few more... WoW is getting a bunch of bad press lately. The game has been out for two months, but there are the aformentioned server issues. Crashes have become MORE frequent lately. In the last week or so, there have been 3 extended outages. No rollbacks, thankfully. But Blizzard doesn't seem to want to do anything and the communication with the players is horrid. Chinese farmers are really trying to ruin the economy. You see them all the time with seemingly no response from Blizzard. It's not as bad as EQ or Lineage, but it is a minor annoyance. Two classes are woefully overpowered and one very underpowered. Shaman and Palidins are horribly balanced with almost an "I win" button. They're virtually impossible to kill 1 on 1 at similar levels. Warriors are awfully weak, to the point that most players have just stopped playing them. It's very uncommon to see a high-level Alliance warrior now. The horde play them a bit more because they don't have palidins. Yet Blizzard has done nothing and instead spent time nerfing druid and warlock abilities. On the PvP servers, ganking and exploits are rampant with no reprocussions. There's a decided lack of high-level content right now. I've played quite a bit, but no more than most and I'm already level 54. There's not much I can do now solo and there aren't that many high-level instances. The Battlegrounds are supposed to come out soon, but I'm not really looking forward to them until the lag and balance issues are taken care of. I still love the game, but Blizz needs to do something on these. The game's been out for 2 months now. It's time to fix these issues. |

I guess I'm really glad my wife and I don't have much time to play the game, otherwise I might be feeling the same disappointments. As for now, we enjoy playing for a couple hours a night when our daughter goes to bed. I'd still like to see this stuff fixed though, since we'll be at a higher level eventually.

It's so expensive because Blizzard has stopped selling the game to retailers due to the afforementioned server problems. They don't want more users until they can handle the current load. In regards to the server problems, I'm a lucky one whose server had been relatively unaffected. I never experience lag (unless it's on my end because I've forgotten that my other PC has a BitTorrent download going) and I've yet to see a queue. But I must say, if I was sitting in queue's before each gaming session I would undoubtedly be extremely pissed off. The content of the game though is outstanding. I picked it up on Christmas Eve and I haven't slowed down yet. But I would disagree a bit on the comment someone made that it isn't addictive though, and that there are logical breaks. I have so many quests going at all times that I feel I could play for 20 hours and not complete them. Too often completing a quest leads directly to the start of a new one, or a continuation of the current one. 2 hours of time can pass while playing and feel like 30 minutes, and I'm not exagerating, time just flies. Can you play for 30 mintues? Sure, i've done it, but it's very, very easy to get sucked in and play for 10 hours (which sadly I've also done).

I agree with what has been said. My realm that I've been playing on, Earthen Ring, has been great, but the high population ones have had some pretty major issues lately. For anyone looking to start a new character, make sure to do so on a low population server. That way you have some room to grow.
I do have a few additional thoughts. I think the best thing is that I found a fun guild. I browsed around the WoW guild forums for a few days and found a couple that looked intriguing. I messaged the players and found what looked like it would be a good fit. It's mostly a small group of guys that work together for AOL in the DC area. We've been doing nightly instances and helping each other out with items and such. It really makes the game that much more enjoyable. Regarding the class balancing issues, I would very much expect that to get made much better. If any of you guys have been online players of the warcraft or starcraft series', you know Blizzard works very hard to try and get the game races/classes balanced. As it is, I think most classes are fine. Hunters, Mages, Priests, and Warlocks all seem to fill their role well and need only minor tweaks. Shamans and Paladins need some adjusting downward, but they will probably stay two of the strongest classes, which is fine. Druids healing is fine, but could you use a buff to feral damage and a better revive spell. Warriors need a lot help. Also, Pondura, my druid, is now level 38. Blackadar: Yeah, I wanted to get a sense for how each of the classes play, and wanted to see what the different role-playing servers were like, so I pretty much made one of each class on a handful of servers. it only takes an hour or so to get to level six, so it's not much time altogether. I tend to go back and nudge them up a level or two every so often. I'll probably add a dwarf paladin somewhere too.
Danny: I've had good experiences on Earthen Ring each time I've been there this week, and it's had the most consistent role-playing that I've seen so far. Looks like a good realm. I haven't seen the same thing on Argent Dawn, but that might just be the area I've been in. |

From what I've seen, Paladins are not nearly as overpowered as people make them out to be. I think the problem with Paladins is not the class, but the weapons. My friend is a Paladin and has focused everything on defense, he has a 1 handed weapon and a sheild and he does not appear to be overpowered. In fact, we have dueled (me as a druid) several times and he never kicked my ass. He was always at least 1 level ahead of me, and the battles have always been as close as you would expect between a fighter class and a hybrid class.
The problem is the 2 handed weapons. They are very overpowered. I think when it comes to Paladins, they should limit their weapons access instead of nerfing the class. It's the offensive Paladins that put off this perception that the class needs to be nerfed because they get all of the Paladin skills and talents with the overpowered best weapons in the game. They should either not let paladins have access to the best weapons or they should nerf the weapons. The class might need a little toneing down, but I don't see them as so overpowered as eveyone else seems to. |

The only time I see lag on Lothar is when I'm in Ironforge, especially in the auction house.
