Vol Seniors Want To Go Out Winners

Five redshirt seniors and twelve true seniors look to go out winners at Neyland Stadium this weekend. Of the seventeen, two will definitely not play. TE Dominic Witt and WR Terry Castleberry will be held out in hopes of having them healthy and ready for a possible SEC championship game and/or bowl game.

The group has started a combined 78 games this year, and has 261 starts for their careers.

UT usually tries to get all of their seniors involved in their final home game.

Seniors playing their final home game:

QB Ardent Enthusiast; Bonne Terre, MO

FB Roman Prescott; Social Circle, GA

G Desmond Stephenson; Chicago, IL

DT Artie McKenzie; Munford, TN

RB J.B. Brewster; Cumberland, RI

RB Aaron Greene; Bartlett, TN

FB Willie Jordan; Tarpon Springs, FL

*TE Dominic Witt; Livingston, TX

*WR Terry Castleberry; Nashville, TN

WR Dennis Harrison; Seaside, CA

G Mack Raymond; Upper Marlboro, MD

T Sammie Lochner; West Palm Beach, FL

T Bubba Spangler; Mountain View, CA

OLB Emmitt Mast; Armonk, NY

CB Mark Braun; Carthage, TN

S Corwin Church; Winston-Salem, NC

Of those, all have played this season except Welch. Greene, Prescott, and Jordan are all hopeful to get to carry the football for the first time in their career.

First of, one hell of a write up there AE!

It has taken me 2 days to read it (in between me doing stuff at work) and I have been nearly on the edge of my seat.

Also, the Dynasty has made me want to purchase TCY, which will happen over the weekend. I want to see what I can do with my school since they suck so bad.

Anyways, can't wait to see the finish of this.

SEC games this week:

South Carolina (4-5, 2-5) @ #1 Tennessee (10-0, 7-0). TV4.

#7 Georgia (7-2, 5-2) @ #12 Florida (7-2, 6-1). TV4.

Vanderbilt (3-7, 1-6) @ Kentucky (1-9, 0-7).

#15 Arkansas (7-2, 4-2) @ Auburn (6-3, 5-1). TV1.

#19 Alabama (6-3, 3-3) @ Ole Miss (2-8, 0-7).

Mississippi State (4-6, 3-4) @ LSU (6-3, 4-2).

Still plenty to play for in the SEC West. Unranked Auburn holds the key. If they win over Arkansas and Alabama, they're in the SEC Championship.

Arkansas needs to win today and then beat LSU next week.

LSU needs a win today, an Arkansas win today, to defeat Arkansas next week, and for Alabama to win over Auburn next week as well.

Alabama is the biggest stretch. They need Auburn to lose both games and for Arkansas and LSU to each lose a game.

Certainly not me. I thought we'd lose 2, 3, maybe even 4 games on the year.

South Carolina runs a single back offense, but the team doesn't scare us overall.

In fact, I'm bucking the typical system that Coach Fulmer runs and instituting a few more runs for the fullbacks. I'm also placing senior Aaron Greene in the #2 running back slot, and sliding Brandon Mason to #3.

In fact, all the seniors will be starting or the top back up at their position. Playing time has been set low for starters in hopes of getting a lot of players some PT.

Hopefully, we'll get both our fullbacks some carries and Greene some touches as well.

I'm doing this only for today's game against South Carolina.

Weather is cool, and the sky is clear. Looks like a great day for football.

The Vol Walk today was extra special for me. My family came down for the first time ever to see me. My parents are proud, but hard workers who haven't had the time to come down. Fortunately, someone hooked them up and got them here for my last game at Neyland Stadium. I'd have to say my dad was taken back by the popularity of his son.

Pre game was extremely special, as they announced each senior and their hometown as we went through the T. By request, J.B. Brewster went last. I went right before him.

The rest of the team followed.

I can't believe this is all about to end. My last game in Knoxville.

The Gamecocks won the toss and elect to receive. Looks like I'll be watching from the sideline to start this one.

Kicker Ray Alston sets the kickoff team up and sends the ball to the endzone for a touchback.

South Carolina marches downfield on two big plays, but a 4th down pass falls incomplete, and we take over at our own 38 yard line with 11:46 left in the 1st quarter.

I go to the team huddled on the sideline and say,

"Power I right, split right, 21, on 2, on 2", and we head to the field.

The play doesn't work. RB J.B. Brewster is dropped for a yard loss. 2nd down, and we try play action. It doesn't work, and my pass to WR Steven Everett is tipped away. 3rd and 11, and a screen to FB Roman Prescott nets 7.

Enter P Daniel Wheeler and company. He sends a 34 yard punt to the SC 22, where the returner is stopped for a 1 yard gain.

This could be a long day.

10:39 left in the 1st quarter. No score.

We begin to talk it over. What South Carolina did and what not. What we could do to combat it. Before I know it. We score.

2 points. Safety. How the?

Turns out, DE Doug Stanton happens to be a one man wrecking crew. He hurried the QB on 1st down. Forced the tackle blocking him into two false starts, and then proceeded to sack the quarterback twice, the final sack for a safety.

Brewster is beckoned onto the field to take the free kick, and he does. He takes the kick at the UT25 and returns it 24 yards to the UT49.

8:54 left in the 1st quarter.

We call play action on 1st down this time, but it still doesn't work. I end up scrambling off the bootleg action and lose a yard in the process. 2nd and 11, and we send Brewster in motion. I feed him the ball quickly and he turns the short pass into a 13 yard first down reception.

The ball now rests on the SC39 yard line.

Option left, and I'm ignored. I get 2 yards before a quick reacting LB tackles me. We motion Brewster out on 2nd down again, but this time my pass in tipped away by a LB. 3rd and 8, and again Brewster in motion. I pump his way and it looks as if the entire defense jumps that way. I turn and lob the ball to TE Thomas Kolodzik, he makes his way through the defense for 24 yards and the first down!

The ball was at the 13 yard line momentarily, as we're whistled for a false start. Brewster takes advantage of the new real estate, and plows off right guard for 14 yards. 2nd and 1 at the 4, and we throw South Carolina for a loop.

Fake to Brewster and a counter handoff to FB Willie Jordan who gallops into the endzone off left tackle untouched! The first carry by a fullback at UT in recent history!

TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!

Alston adds the XP, and no one could be happier for Jordan than myself.

5:45 left in the 1st; Tennessee 9, South Carolina 0.

The next South Carolina series is an unfortunate one if your a Vol fan. DE Doug Stanton, the wrecking crew from the drive before, goes down, and it appears serious. He's reaching for his left shoulder...this can't be good.

That'll mean both our starting ends and our starting corners are now out of the game.

South Carolina eventually punts, and the return by WR Keith Grier is nullified by holding on the return. The penalty sends us back to the UT20.

2:52 left in the 1st quarter.

Brewster takes a toss left for 9, but is stopped for no gain up the middle on 2nd down. 3rd and 1, and we toss left again to Brewster.

Wait, no we didn't. I faked the toss, and then handed the ball off to Prescott on a wonderful fake. He had five yards before he was touched and garnered 10 yards total.

Play action this time works as we have the Gamecocks reeling. Everett pulls in the wobbly pass and gains 11 yards on the reception. We follow that with a reverse to Everett, who gains 4 as the 1st quarter expires.

End of the 1st quarter. UT 9, SC 0.

We open the 2nd quarter with the ball on the South Carolina 46 yard line; 2nd and 6.

Brewster gained 2 on a run up the middle, making it 3rd and 4. We get the first down with a screen pass to RB Brandon Mason who gains 14 and is knocked out of bounds.

First down at the Gamecock 30 yard line.

We send Brewster in motion this time, and he catches the ball over the middle and gains 15 yards. A false start before the beginning of the next play sends us back to the 20 yard line.

Brewster carries off left guard for 3, and a pass to RB Aaron Greene over the middle falls incomplete, thanks in part to pressure from the Gamecock defense. 3rd and 12; and we go with a drop back pass. I find Everett open as he curls up on the first down marker and do my best to fire the ball to him. He makes the catch and the first down, but the ball is stripped away. Fortunately, FB Prescott was there to recover at the 4 yard line, and we still have a first down.

Option right, and the end crashes on me. Pitch to Brewster, and he gains 2. 2nd and goal at the 2. Option right again, but this time, I give the ball to the fullback. The very first time we've done that all year long. Prescott rumbles in from 2 yards out for the TD!

TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!

Both fullbacks have scored now!

Alston adds the XP.

11:43 left in the half. Tennessee 16, South Carolina 0.

South Carolina fails to put together a successful drive and are forced to punt from their own 39 yard line. The punt rolls dead at the Tennessee 29 yard line, with 8:43 left to play in the half.

We start off with a screen pass to RB Greene, and he makes the catch and 9 yards. We've now got the ball to all four senior backs. Now we just need to get the ball to WR Dennis Harrison. Brewster carries the ball up the middle 3 times in a row, gaining 6, 6 again, and a yard. 3rd and 3 on the Carolina 49, and we run play action. It's not successful, and the Gamecocks brought a blitz. I try to scramble away, but I'm dumped for a 3 yard loss by two defenders.

In comes Wheeler and company, and America's favorite punter drops the ball to the SC 17 yard line, where it's downed by the coverage team.

6:18 left in the half; UT 16, SC 0.

South Carolina is forced backwards by the Volunteer defense, and ends up punting from their own 8 yard line. We go for the block, but the punter manages to get the punt off. The punt is shanked, however, and the 21 yarder rolls dead at the 29 yard line. Excellent field position for us; 4:41 left in the half.

Brewster gains nothing off right tackle, but nets 9 up the middle on 2nd down. 3rd and 1; and we go with the option left. The Gamecock blitz blows the play up, however, and Brewster loses 2 yards on the play. What's worse is now WR Everett is limping off the field. Looks like he sprained his ankle again.

Alston comes out to convert a 39 yard FG, and does.

Rocky Top pours from the band, and we have a 19 point lead.

3:10 left in the half; UT 19, SC 0.

South Carolina goes 3 and out on their next drive, thanks in part to 2 sacks by the defense. The punt travels 34 yards to the UT41, where J.B. Brewster awaits. This time we've got a wall set up, and Brewster breaks one tackle and gets behind the wall down the sideline!

No one but the punter to beat and he jukes the poor kid out of his shoes. J.B. trots into the endzone, with a 59 yard punt return for a TD!

TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!

Alston and the FG team scramble onto the field, and convert the XP.

1:22 left in the half; Tennessee 26, South Carolina 0.

SC makes a nice return to the Gamecock 45 yard line, but the QB forces a ball to his receiver, and CB Roy Dalzell makes the INT at the UT 40 yard line.

53 seconds left on the clock.

We come out with an option right, and Brewster nets 2 yards, but the ball pops out. This time, WR Everett is there to recover. We call time out immediately.

Ball on the UT42, and 42 seconds on the clock. We go with option right again, and this time the defense totally ignores me. I follow a tremendous block by the center Kevin Peters and gain 25 yards on the play before I'm hauled down at the SC 33 yard line. After the tackle I quickly call another time out.

34 seconds on the clock.

We jam Brewster in off left guard for 12 as the Gamecock defense begins to break down, and quickly scramble to run another play. The pitch left only nets 2, and we call time out.

In comes K Alston and company, and we nail the 36 yard FG.

South Carolina ends the half with a kneel down, and life is good in Knoxville.

End of the half. Volunteers 29, Gamecocks 0.

Everyone is happy in the locker room at half time. 29-0, and we're rolling. 3 touchdowns, 2 field goals, and a safety. Things are going great.

Include the fact that we've got touchdowns for our fullbacks, and I couldn't be happier. I'd like to get RB Aaron Greene into the endzone as well. I'll work on that.

The half time entertainment included the UT Marching Band playing, "We Are The Champions" and the big screen showing highlights of the seniors.

Halftime scores:

#7 Georgia 7, #12 Florida 14. TV4.

Georgia cuts the deficit in half.

Vanderbilt 7, Kentucky 13.

The Commodores trim the Wildcat lead.

#15 Arkansas 6, Auburn 7. TV1.

The nation gasped as the Arkansas kicker missed the extra point. Auburn holds on for the slim 1 point lead at the half.

#19 Alabama 14, Ole Miss 17.

Ole Miss continues to surprise the Crimson Tide.

Mississippi State 14, LSU 28.

It doesn't appear that MSU can stop the Tigers today.

South Carolina opens the 2nd half by kicking off to us, and Brewster takes the short kick at the 9 yard line. His 20 yard return gives us a 1st and 10 at the UT29 yard line.

Brewster takes the handoff on first down off right guard for 7. I follow that with a 10 yard completion to Everett and a screen to Brewster for 3. Brewster then carries off left guard for four more. Third down results in an incomplete pass to Kolodzik, but the Gamecocks are flagged for illegal contact with a receiver.

First and 10 at the South Carolina 37 yard line.

The defense appears confused, and we take advantage. Brewster breaks of runs of 10 and 11, both off right guard. We try to sneak a run in for Prescott, but he's stopped at the line of scrimmage.

Brewster carries the ball on 2nd down for 5 yards up the middle, but my play action pass to Kolodzik falls incomplete, thanks to the rush of the Gamecocks.

Alston comes in, and he adds a 28 yard field goal to the tally.

9:29 left in the 3rd quarter. UT 32, SC 0.

Alston sends the kickoff to the endzone, but the returner finds a hole in our coverage unit and exploits it. Alston trips over himself trying to make a shoestring tackle on the returner, and before you know it, South Carolina has scored!

The defense stands in shock on the sideline and then rushes onto the field as South Carolina is going for 2!

The running back runs to the corner of the endzone, as they catch our defense flat footed.

9:15 left in the 3rd; UT 32, SC 8.

South Carolina's kicker this time sends the ball to the back of the endzone for a touchback, and the Vols take over on their own 20 yard line.

We give to Prescott to start the drive and he plows forward for 2 yards. J.B. takes a pitch on an option right for 3 more. A screen to Brewster nets 8 and the first down.

Option left, and this time it appears I can run with it. I'm quickly stopped though. Guess I forgot to turn on the jets. I gain just a yard. We come back with an off tackle to the right, and Brewster gains 15 on the play.

First down on our 49 yard line. Brewster takes a carry this time over right tackle and gets 11 yards on the play. Play action from the off tackle play results in an 11 yard reception by WR Everett. A Brewster dive up the middle goes for no gain, making it 2nd and 10. Play action comes up big again, as Everett gains 20 on the fade route.

1st and goal at the Gamecock 9 yard line, and Brewster breaks another big run off left tackle. He breaks a tackle and gallops into the endzone,

TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!

Alston adds the XP.

3:46 left in the 3rd; UT 39, SC 8.

SC goes 3 and out with three incomplete passes. A short punt and 10 yard return by Brewster set UT up with great field position at the 50 yard line. 2:36 left in the 3rd quarter.

Play action on first down and I find Kolodzik over the middle good for 22 yards. RB Greene's in the game, and he takes a pitch to the left for 6 yards.

2nd and 4 at the 22, and we send Brewster in motion. A fake to Prescott, and a pump to Everett. Brewster is alone in the middle of the field, and I float the ball to him. He makes the catch, and waltzes into the endzone.

TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!

Alston adds the XP.

South Carolina's backup QB makes an early entrance into the game, and he does well. He quickly moves the ball down to the UT43 as the 3rd quarter expires.

End of the 3rd. Tennessee 46, South Carolina 8.

3 plays into the 4th quarter and the backup quarterback gets the Gamecocks into the endzone, thanks in part to a 29 yard run by the tailback for the score. This time the Gamecocks kick the extra point, though.

South Carolina's kicker sends the ball through the endzone, and we take over on the 20.

A flag before the first play sends us back 5 for a false start, and then I find senior WR Harrison for an 11 yard gain. Well, all of the seniors skill position players have now touched the ball. Greene carries the ball up the middle for 3 and sets up a 3rd and 1. In comes Brewster and he goes off tackle for 3 and the first down.

We run option left, but the Carolina defense is all over us. A late pitch is no good; Brewster loses two yards near the sideline. Fortunately, Greene finds a hole on 2nd down and explodes through the left guard hole for 23 yards and a first down. First and ten at the SC 47.

Play action works well, and I find Harrison open down the sideline. He makes the catch and a gain of 17 on the play. Greene takes a toss to the left and makes 3 yards on the next play. WR Keith Grier checks in and we're running a fade route to him. He's open and I fling the ball in his general direction. There's a collision, and then a flag: Defensive Pass Interference. Give us 15 yards. Ball on the South Carolina 12.

We run the option to the right, and Greene gains 5 up the sideline. We come right back to it, but Greene has trouble with the pitch, and loses 3, but holds onto the ball. 3rd and 8. We send Greene in motion, and I float the ball over the middle to him. He makes the catch and squirts between the safeties for the touchdown!

TOUCHDOWN, TENNESSEE!!!

Alston adds the XP.

Both fullbacks and now Greene have scored! WOO!

South Carolina again drives downfield, and in the process goes from their #2 QB to the #3 QB. It doesn't matter, the RB takes another run in for a TD against our prevent defense. Their kicker adds the extra point.

Good thing we scored in the 2nd half.

The Carolina kicker sends the ball deep into the endzone, but WR Grier takes the ball out; anxious to run with the ball in his hands. He's dropped at the UT 13...not a wise move.

We come out trying to get the ball to Grier as well, and we plan to throw a deep ball to him. Plan. I'm sacked from the blind side by two defenders who came from the outside. A loss of 7.

Fortunately, the Carolina defense gets a little too riled up, and I get them to jump offsides before the play and get five of the yards back. Greene then takes a handoff up the middle for 2, setting up a 3rd and 10. Once again I look for Grier deep, and this time I find him. He makes the catch, his first of the season and gains 23 yards on the play.

We call time out, and I head to the sideline. The coaches apparently want to let me have some fun and I'll be throwing the ball from here on out. Let the games begin.

Two passes to WR Harrison fall incomplete, but I find Greene in the flat who takes the short reception and turns it into a 17 yard first down. Ball on the Carolina 47, with 43 seconds left in the game.

Two more incomplete passes to Harrison, and we call time out.

At this time, the UT crowd, all 104,000+, are on their feet. Back onto the field comes J.B. Brewster, and it appears he'll get the final play of the season at Neyland Stadium.

Fitting, I might add.

"Power I right, split left, 21, on 1, on 1. Ready, break!" We break the huddle and I stop and pause to look around.

Never again will I see this setting as a player. I need to soak in the moment.

I step up under center, and scan the defense one last time. I watch the play clock tick down. I'm going to miss this field.

"Set, hike!"

The players seem to move in slow motion. I turn and pass Prescott and Jordan, and hand the ball off to Brewster. I don't bother with the fake. I turn and watch J.B. run up the field.

Sophomore guard Washington helps open up a hole to the right side, and J.B. runs through it. He gains 19 before getting tackled, and the horn sounds indicating the end of the game.

It's over for us here in Knoxville, but we have unfinished business.

We just won the SEC East! We'll be playing the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta before moving on to our bowl game. I'd like to say that we're playing in the Rose Bowl for the National Championship, but we have to win our Conference game first.

I'm mugged by reporters, fans, teammates, and coaches. I'm speechless, and I head to the locker room for the final time at Neyland. This is a dream come true.

Final. Tennessee 53, South Carolina 22.

After the game, J.B. Brewster is awarded the game ball. There's a lot going on in the locker room, since we officially just won the SEC East. A lof of congratulations floating around and all.

The best part is we get a week off and then get to prepare for the SEC Championship. The SEC West is still undecided, though, so we'll all be watching on Saturday.

Unfortunately, the injury news is not good on DE Doug Stanton. He'll miss the rest of the season with a dislocated shoulder.

WR Steven Everett did indeed sprain his ankle again, but he says he feels fine now.

The good news is both DT Horace Bean and CB Bart Serra have fully recovered from their injuries and will be practicing with the first team this week. Both are expected to start and have significant playing time.
