Coach-student bonds often go unquestioned
Student athletes are especially vulnerable to abuse from coaches, say experts in the wake of two local accusations.

By SHANNON COLAVECCHIO-VAN SICKLER, Times Staff Writer
Published November 3, 2005

TAMPA - Whispered rumors of sex between girls basketball coach Jaymee Wallace and a female student swirled around Wharton High School's New Tampa campus. The girl, now 17, begged her sister and teammates not to tell.

For months they obliged, hiding it from parents and school officials.

The long-running camouflage was made easier, experts say, by the often close nature of relationships between coaches and students.

Wallace was in a position of authority and trust.

In such a case, experts say, parents - and students - can wrongly assume the best of intentions by coaches.

"That's what makes the student athlete so vulnerable," said Marj Snyder, chief program officer for the Women's Sports Foundation, founded in 1974 by tennis star Billie Jean King.

"They think, "This is a person I trust. If my coach is doing it, it must be okay."'

The Wharton girl's friends didn't start talking until June, when her confession to her mother sparked a two-month police investigation that resulted in Wallace's recent arrest.

Authorities on Monday charged Wallace, 28, with one count of lewd and lascivious battery, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. The longtime Wharton math teacher posted $7,500 bail and will plead not guilty, her attorney said. She now works in a school district office and has no contact with students. Wallace denies the charges.

It wasn't the only arrest in the bay area this week involving a female high school coach. Citrus County teacher Amy Gail Lilley, Lecanto High School's former softball coach, was arrested Tuesday amid allegations she had sex several times during a two-month relationship with a female student, 15. It is unclear whether the student was a softball player. Lilley, 36, was charged with lewd and lascivious battery on a child 12 to 16.

The Wharton student told detectives she and Wallace had sex more than 50 times between early 2003 and August 2004.

Hoftsra University professor Charol Shakeshaft said a coach has more opportunity for interaction with student athletes that, unchecked, can lead to an inappropriate relationship.

"It can be similar to a teacher who teaches music or theater," said Shakeshaft, who is reviewing educator sexual abuse as part of a contract with the U.S. Department of Education. "You are spending time after school together, on weekends during practice. And that doesn't immediately raise suspicion."

The Wharton student and her teammates told detectives that Wallace often drove them home from practice and spent weekends with them.

Authorities say parents grew suspicious when Wallace's visits with students grew more frequent and erratic, with Wallace sometimes picking them up before dawn and dropping them off after dark. Had Wallace been a male coach, red flags might have gone up sooner, experts say.

Shakeshaft said female-to-female abuse is the least prevalent pattern of educator-student abuse, but it happens.

A 2004 U.S. Department of Education survey of 2,500 students in grades 8 through 11 found that 13 percent of reported incidents involved a female educator and a female student, Shakeshaft said.

The survey did not specify how many of the educators also were coaches, but Shakeshaft said coaches are "at the top of the list among the roles of people who cross boundaries."

"The coach has a right to tell the student to do things, just by the nature of their job," said Kansas State University professor Bob Shoop, an expert witness in cases involving sexual abuse between teachers and students.

"The coach has almost total power over what the student eats, how they dress, what they do. Not only do they spend time together, but it's unsupervised time."

Wallace told detective Melanee Holder during a June 7 interview that her relationship with the student was "much like a mother/daughter or big sister/little sister."

The student and her teammates described it as more. The student said her sexual encounters with Wallace took place in a Wal-Mart parking lot, in Wallace's Tampa Palms apartment and on their way home from out-of-town games.

The student's teammates, including her older sister, said they saw the two kissing and lying down naked together in Wallace's apartment.

Teammates recalled seeing flirtatious notes and text messages from Wallace to the student in which Wallace called her "sweetheart" and told her "I love you."

Wallace's attorney Joe Bodiford points out investigators have no record of the text messages or notes. The student told police she deleted the messages and destroyed all the notes from Wallace.

Detectives did find a May 2005 cell phone bill statement showing the student called Wallace's cell phone 53 times at all hours.

The Women's Sports Foundation offers a checklist for coaches entitled "Are You Crossing the Line with an Athlete?" It advises coaches to be wary of lengthy personal talks or home visits with an athlete.

Snyder said her organization wants to see a formal certification and training program for coaches that addresses all aspects of coaching, including coach-athlete relationships.

The United States does not currently have such a certification process.

"So you could become a coach and never get any training in appropriate behaviors and dealings with student athletes," Snyder said. "There's a whole lack of education."

Times staff writer Abbie VanSickle contributed to this report. Shannon Colavecchio-Van Sickler can be reached at 813 226-3373 or

Chief believes sex claims

Spring Valley officer backs boy's story at teacher-sex trial

Thursday, October 27, 2005
BY ERINN DESHINSKY

OF THE JOURNAL STAR

PRINCETON - The police chief investigating an alleged sexual relationship between a Hall High School teacher and her 15-year-old student testified Wednesday he believed the boy's claims about the affair, but the defense argued inconsistencies in the boy's testimony prove he is a liar.

Spring Valley Police Chief Doug Bernabei testified in front of Judge Chris H. Ryan Wednesday on the third day of the bench trial of Gina M. Purvis, a former biology teacher at the Spring Valley high school.

Purvis, 29, is charged with four counts of felony criminal sexual assault in Bureau County for allegedly having sexual relations with the student in the spring of 2004.

The boy alleged he had sex with Purvis after the superintendent confronted him in November 2004 about rumors of their relationship heard in school.

Bernabei recounted a telephone "overhear" he documented Nov. 11. Upon Bernabei's instruction, the mother called a telephone number belonging to Gina Purvis and confronted her about the rumors while Bernabei was listening on another line and taking notes. He said the woman on the other line did not know he was listening.

Bernabei said the mother identified the woman as Purvis. The woman told the mother she got too close to the boy and messed up but never meant to hurt him.

He said the woman also admitted she and the boy kissed. He said the woman said, "I was in the storage room, I turned, he was there. I knew it was wrong."

The defense questioned why Bernabei didn't use a wiretap during the mother's phone call and why he didn't instruct her to ask for details about when the events happened.

"I don't believe I had time," Bernabei said, adding he felt valuable evidence might have been lost if he waited for the wiretap. "There are certainly a lot of questions I would have loved to ask within that 30 minutes. I had to deal with what I had."

Bernabei said the woman also said in the phone call she told the boy to lie to his parents and say he was visiting Purvis' niece, when he visited the teacher at her home. The boy, now 17, testified Tuesday the two had sex during these visits - on one occasion, nine times.

Bernabei said the woman also admitted she flirted with the boy and gave him a necklace and some photographs.

"The female voice said she would lose her license and lose her job over this," Bernabei said.

The defense claimed testimony by the boy's cousin Rick Andes was inconsistent with an interview he had earlier. During a taped testimony shown Wednesday, the defense questioned Andes' recollection of when events happened.

Andes, who is currently serving in the Navy, said he saw Purvis kiss his cousin and said she told him the boy was "good in bed." Purvis' former colleague Joseph Sester of Rockford testified Wednesday she would tell him about her sexual problems with her husband and that she wanted a divorce.

Female Teacher Arrested For Sex Abuse With Student

(WJZ) Centerville, MD Maryland State Police today arrested and charged a female teacher in Kent County in connection with the sexual abuse of a juvenile male student who attends the high school where she teaches.

The accused is identified as Kimberly Ann Cordrey-McKinney, 32, of Chestertown MD. She is charged with two counts each of sexual abuse of a minor, child abuse from a custodian, unnatural/perverted sexual practice and second degree assault. Cordrey-McKinney was arrested at 4pm today when she met troopers at the Kent County Detachment in Chestertown. After processing, she will be taken before a District Court commissioner for a bond hearing.

The victim is a 16 year old male from Kent County. He will not be identified since he is the victim of sexual abuse.

The investigation began in late October, when information was received from the Kent County Office of the Department of Social Services about a reported sexual abuse of a minor. A joint investigation by State Police and the Department of Social Services was initiated.

The investigation reveled that Cordrey-McKinney apparently met the victim at Kent County High School, where she is a teacher. The victim is a student at the school, but did not have class with the accused teacher.

The victim alleges he had numerous conversations and text message exchanges over his cell phone with the teacher beginning in the fall. Then, on one night in late September and two other nights in October, the victim alleges the accused picked him up in her vehicle and drove him to secluded areas in Kent County where the two engaged in sexual acts.

Published on: 11/14/05 A 37-year-old woman was charged with child molestation after being accused of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy whom she married last week.

The Gainesville Times quoted unidentified members of the boy's family as saying that Lynnette Clark is pregnant with the boy's child and that they were married Tuesday. Judy Hayles, the boy's grandmother, said she received a notice of the marriage from Dawson County because she is the boy's guardian.

Clark was arrested Wednesday and brought to the Hall County Detention Center. The Hall County sheriff's office did not immediately return phone calls Monday seeking further detail.

District Attorney Lee Darragh said the Georgia law on child molestation, which says that a person under age 16 legally cannot consent to a sexual act, does not take into consideration whether the minor is married or not.

Clark will appear in court for a committal hearing on Nov. 30, said Darragh, who said he would not comment further on the case.

Hayles said the relationship had been going on for nearly two years. She said her grandson and Clark's teenage son had been close friends and that the grandson spent many weekends at Clark's home.

Now Hayles said she is working to end the marriage.

''This marriage is going to be terminated,'' she said.

Dawson County Probate Court Judge Jennifer Burt said in a statement that she reviewed the marriage application and applied the appropriate provisions under state law before issuing the license but she had no additional comment on the matter because it is being investigated.

Georgia law provides an exemption to age requirements for marriage if the couple have a child or the female can show she is pregnant. In Georgia, one must be 18 to marry without parental consent or 16 to marry with parental consent.

Gainesville, about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta, is the seat of Hall County. Dawson is an adjoining county.

I still maintain that, absent a conviction, the accused shouldn't be named, either. That's her reputation that's just been dragged through the mud now, deservedly or otherwise.

If she's guilty, that's one thing, but unless she's admitted it, who's to know before the trial?

If somehow she's acquitted, she's going to have the devil's own time getting another teaching job thanks to the revelation of her identity.

How/why is this different from a robbery, murder, or any other type of crime? Just because you are "innocent until proven guilty" doesn't mean no one has the right to know you have been charged with a crime.

Further, it's probably worth noting somewhere that the name of the accused being a matter of public record is, as I understand it, primarly designed to protect the accused, by preventing them from being "disappeared", etc.

'Cool mom' gets 30 years for sex parties

Woman gave high school boys drugs, booze at weekly parties

GOLDEN, Colorado (AP) -- A woman who authorities said had sex with high school boys during alcohol- and drug-fueled parties has been sentenced to 30 years in prison, officials said.

Silvia Johnson, 41, described herself to investigators as a "cool mom" who "was never popular with classmates in high school" and who was beginning to feel like one of the group.

She pleaded guilty in July to two misdemeanor counts of sexual assault and nine felony counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

She also was sentenced for additional charges of third-degree assault, violation of a restraining order and harassment for unrelated cases involving her husband and children, prosecution spokesman Carl Blesch said.

Authorities said Johnson held parties for the boys almost weekly between October 2003 and October 2004. They said Johnson provided drugs and alcohol to eight boys and had sex with five of them.

Johnson was to be sentenced on September 26, but the hearing was postponed after she was injured the day before while riding in an SUV that veered off an interstate.

Never mind, it is in the article:

Quote:
If the bride is pregnant, parental consent isn't required, and age is no longer a factor either, according to the law.

"With Georgia law the way it is, we had no choice," said Tammy Chester, Dawson County's probate clerk. "We went through all the proper procedures."

Racy notes result in an arrest in Burnet
Youth minister's wife is accused on soliciting sex from a minor.

Friday, November 18, 2005

A 27-year-old Burnet woman is accused of posing as a teenage girl and having phone sex with a 15-year-old boy whom she sent dozens of letters asking him to sleep with her, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

For months, the boy thought his admirer was 16, and he even invited her to homecoming, but she stood him up, the affidavit said. Along with letters and cards, Mandy — as she called herself — left him gifts of bras, underwear, condoms and K-Y personal lubricant, the affidavit said.

Then he found out she was Amanda White, the wife of a youth minister, Burnet police said.

White was charged Nov. 9 with criminal solicitation of a minor, a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000. She was arrested and released on bail.

White's attorney did not return phone calls Thursday, and White could not be reached for comment.

Police are investigating and may make more arrests, said Burnet police Capt. Paul Nelson. He said White, who has children, is married to a youth minister at Victory Baptist Church in Burnet. She also worked with children at the church, Nelson said.

The church did not return phone calls Thursday.

Police confiscated 50 to 75 handwritten letters and cards that White wrote to the boy, according to the affidavit. Nelson said the letters were written in the last half of the summer.

White told police she started writing the letters as a game after she had seen a photo of the boy on a friend's cell phone, the affidavit said. White told police that the letters were "very dirty" and that she knew it was wrong to write them, according to the affidavit. White also told police that she knew the boy was a minor, the affidavit said.

The boy said he would go to White's house to pick up the letters that he thought Mandy had left for him, the affidavit said. He thought he was going to meet with Mandy and have sex with her, the affidavit said.

He told police that Mandy called him all the time and that they had phone sex, according to the affidavit.

He was even going to take Mandy to homecoming at Burnet High, but she never showed up, the affidavit said. Her letters said she wanted to meet him on other occasions, but in subsequent letters she'd say she couldn't, the affidavit stated.

A witness told police she heard White call the boy and told White that she needed to stop, according to the affidavit. A second witness said White promised to break off contact with the boy but hadn't done so several weeks later, the affidavit said.

The boy got suspicious at a Burnet High School football game this fall when he saw someone who looked like the "Mandy" he'd seen in a photo on a cell phone, the affidavit said. It wasn't clear from the affidavit whose photo he saw or who owned the cell phone.

The affidavit doesn't explain who told him Mandy's identity. But when he discovered it was White, he told his mother about the letters, and she contacted police, Nelson said.

Police: Woman had sex with minors

A former teacher's aide at a Levy County charter school was arrested Wednesday amid allegations that she had sex with four male students at the school, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

The arrest is just one of several cases in the news recently in which women are accused of having sex with minor boys.

Jennifer Hines, 32, of Old Town, was arrested at her home on three counts of unlawful sexual activity with minors and one count of lewd and lascivious offenses on a minor under 16, the FDLE reported. Hines was working as a teacher's aide at New Hope Charter High School in Chiefland when the alleged incidents occurred in Dixie County between October 2004 and February 2004, said FDLE spokesman Phil Kiracofe.

The school has 62 students in grades nine through 12.

The students, ages 15 to 17, told investigators that on some occasions, Hines drank alcohol and smoked marijuana with them.

Kiracofe said none of the encounters took place at the school. He said the allegations did not surface until after Hines had resigned in February 2004.

Kim Martin, director of New Hope, said she and other administrators were "shocked" when they heard about the allegations following Hines' resignation.

Hines wasn't the first employee at the school accused of having sex with students. In April, Renee Marie Burbach, 33, was sentenced to 10 years of sex offender probation after pleading guilty to two counts of sex acts with a 16-year-old male student at the school.

In Georgia, a 37-year-old woman was arrested last week and charged with child molestation for allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old boy whom she married, according to the Associated Press.

Recent news media attention to similar cases may lead some to believe that there's an increase in cases of women having sex with boys.

But some psychologists say such a scenario is not a new phenomenon.

Instead, society's double standard that condemned men from having sex with girls, but not the other way around, is vanishing, said Harry Krop, a licensed psychologist in Gainesville.

Krop, who has treated nearly 10,000 sex offenders in his 35 years of practice, said the news media attention has little to do with an actual increase in female offenders, but rather an increase in victims reporting the crimes.

"In years past, it was cool for a teenaged boy to have sex with an older woman," Krop said. "But today, people are learning this behavior is just as inappropriate and harmful to young boys as it is to young girls."

The motivation, however, for adult women who form a sexual relationship with boys is different than men who develop relationships with girls, Krop said. Men who have sex with girls, Krop said, tend to have sexual disorders, such as pedophilia.

But for women, it's not about the sex, but rather the romance, Krop said.

"It's more of a need to be desired, to have someone find them attractive and the need for attention," Krop said.

A sexual relationship with an older woman also causes long-term problems for the young victim, Krop said.

"These victims tend to have more psychological damage than young girls," Krop said. "They have boundary issues and intimacy problems. They are usually vulnerable and the women look for that."

Sun staff writers Lise Fisher and Karen Voyles contributed to this report.

Ms. Hines had sex with 6.4% of the student body at Levy County charter school.

I knew of girls in high school who could top that!

Zing!

Who's learning that? I'm learning that I should have taken a few chances in high school.

And as we near 1000 posts, here's an article about her that raises some of the same double-standard issues we discussed early on in this thread, this time about whether her status as a charged child molester should keep her from having contact with her new boyfriend's kids:

Petition: Lafave's a boyfriend thief, too

By SHANNON COLAVECCHIO-VAN SICKLER, Times Staff Writer
Published November 18, 2005

She may be pretty, but in at least one corner of the world, Debra Lafave isn't too popular. According to a recent court filing, Lafave - the former Greco Middle School teacher accused of having sex with a 14-year-old student - has provoked the ire of a woman who says Lafave stole her boyfriend.

On Nov. 3, Riveriew resident Lisa C. York petitioned for a restraining order against Lafave, 25. York alleges Lafave harassed her at work. She claimed Lafave could endanger her two children. York, 33, said Lafave dated York's ex-boyfriend, Andrew Beck, when they were in high school and recently reunited with him.

"When I found out who his girlfriend was, I told him I didn't want her to be around the children," York wrote. "Bottom line is I don't think she would be good for my kids right now. She isn't even good for herself until she gets help."

Lafave is scheduled to go on trial Dec. 5 on two counts of lewd and lascivious battery.

York said Lafave visited the Red Lobster where she works several times and taunted York about her ex-boyfriend.

"She told me, "I'm Andrew's first love and he would do anything for me."'

A Hillsborough court denied the petition, saying York did not show Lafave was violent with York's children. Messages left for York on Thursday were not returned.

"This is just another example of the nightmare that Debbie has been going through for the past year and a half," said Lafave's attorney, John Fitzgibbons. "Situations like this unfounded claim are rarely ever reported by the media because in domestic situations this happens every day. This just demonstrates the notoriety Debbie's case has generated."

Im guessing, that if a guy had sex with a 14 year old girl, he'd never get a sweet no prison deal. 3 years of house arrest may suck, but she can probably film ammy porn in her off time.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A female teacher pleaded guilty Tuesday to having sex with a 14-year-old student, avoiding prison as part of a plea agreement.

Debra Lafave, 25, whose sensational case made tabloid headlines, will serve three years of house arrest and seven years' probation. She pleaded guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery.

The former Greco Middle School reading teacher apologized during the hearing, saying "I accept full responsibility for my actions." The boy told investigators the two had sex in a classroom at the school, located in Temple Terrace near Tampa, in her Riverview town house and once in a vehicle while his 15-year-old cousin drove them around Marion County.

The boy told investigators Lafave told him her marriage was in trouble and that she was aroused by the fact that having sex with him was not allowed. He said he and Lafave, a newlywed at the time, got to know each other on their way back from a class trip to SeaWorld Orlando in May 2004.

If convicted at trial in Hillsborough County, she could have faced up to 15 years in prison on each count. The plea agreement also was designed to resolve similar charges in Marion County, where Lafave was scheduled to appear in court Dec. 8. But prosecutor Ric Ridgeway said his office wants to speak with the boy's family first.

Hillsborough Circuit Judge Wayne Timmerman said LaFave also will forever lose her teaching certificate, must register with the state as a sexual predator, may not have any contact with children including the victim, and will not be allowed to profit from the sale of her story or personal appearances.

The victim's mother said afterward that the public scrutiny had taken its toll on the family, and they just wanted to see it all end.

"If we had continued along this path, this would have followed him forever," said the mother, whose name was being withheld to protect her son's identity. "My prayer is that he can leave this behind him and go on and be a happy, healthy young man."

After Tuesday's hearing, Lafave's attorney, John Fitzgibbons, said the plea was "a fair resolution of this case." Asked how she felt afterward, Lafave said "tired." Fitzgibbons said in July that plea negotiations had broken off because prosecutors insisted on prison time, which he said would be too dangerous for someone as attractive as Lafave. He said then that she planned to plead insanity at trial, claiming emotional stress kept her from knowing right from wrong.
