Week 6

Georgetown- 63, Idaho St.- 44
Washington- 56, McNeese St.- 37
Cleveland St.- 69, FIU- 55

Week 7

Washington- 68, FIU- 50
Idaho St.- 61, Cleveland St.- 41
Georgetown- 66, McNeese St.- 57

Week 8

Georgetown- 64, Cleveland St.- 50
McNeese St.- 70, FIU- 60
Idaho St.- 62, Washington- 59

Week 9

Idaho St.- 61, McNeese St.- 58
Cleveland St.- 74, Washington- 66
FIU- 84, Georgetown- 72

Standings after Week 9:

Georgetown 7-2 (+67)
Washington 5-4 (+51)
McNeese St. 5-4 (-10)
Cleveland St. 4-5 (-14)
FIU 3-6 (-27)
Idaho St. 3-6 (-67)

Week 10 Schedule:

Georgetown @ Washington
Idaho St. @ FIU
Cleveland St. @ McNeese St.

So Georgetown has clinched the group, and Washington owns the tiebreaker over McNeese St. because Washington swept McNeese in their 2 meetings. This is important if both Washington and McNeese either win or lose their remaining game. If 1 team loses and the other team wins, the team that wins will climb into second place. Cleveland St. can still get third place, but they have to win and either Washington and/or McNeese St. would have to lose. Then we would have a tiebreaker situation.

Week 10

Washington- 62, Georgetown- 58
FIU- 74, Idaho St.- 42
Cleveland St.- 68, McNeese St.- 67

Final Group 13 Standings:

#1- Georgetown 7-3 (+63)
#2- Washington 6-4 (+55)
#3- McNeese St. 5-5 (-11)
#4- Cleveland St. 5-5 (-13)
#5- FIU 4-6 (+5)
#6- Idaho St. 3-7 (-99)

So Georgetown wins the group, but their 7-3 record is so far the worst for the group winners. They could be looking at a seed in the low 40's or high 50's. Washington gets second place and has the best point differential of the 6-4 second place teams, but there are a lot of teams ahead of them. McNeese St. and Cleveland St. split their games, but McNeese St. wins the point differential tiebreaker and jumps into the wildcard contention. Unfortunately we say bye bye to Wagner, who becomes the first wildcard team eliminated, and their tournament is over.

Wildcard Standings after Group 13:

N.C. Central 7-3 (+63)
E. Michigan 7-3 (+50)
Iona 6-4 (+116)
Vermont 6-4 (+43)
N. Florida 6-4 (+9)
Pacific 5-5 (+14)
Buffalo 5-5 (+4)
W. Michigan 5-5 (+1)
St. Francis (NY) 5-5 (-8)
Nebraska 5-5 (-9)
TX Arlington 5-5 (-11)
McNeese St. 5-5 (-11)
Wagner 5-5 (-20) ELIMINATED

Marquette is moving on for sure, and a Longwood win would put them in the round of 128. It's a mess from here on out, a number of possibilities could happen. Too much to get into, but we still have 4 teams battling for 2 possible spots in the round of 128. Wow!

Week 10

Indiana St.- 68, Marquette- 63
Delaware- 81, Longwood- 54
Fla. Atlantic- 72, CSU Bakersfield- 54

Before I go into the Final Group 14 standings, I am using Molson's tiebreaker system from when he did his college football world cups. Here it is:

-2 Team Tie:
1. Head-to Head (if applicable)
2. Point Differential in Group Stage
3. Winning % Of Teams Defeated
4. Total Points Scored in Group Stage
5. Coin Toss

-3+ team tie
(every step seeks to eliminate the bottom team, or bottom tied teams. Then the remaining teams go back to the first step of the tiebreaker procedure)
1. Head-To-Head within tied teams (if they've all played each other)
2. Point Differential in Group Stage
3. Winning % Of Teams Defeated
4. Total Points Scored in Group Stage
5. Coin Toss

I will break down the 4 way tie between Longwood, Fla. Atlantic, Indiana St., and Delaware.

4 team tie Head to Head

Longwood 4-2
Fla. Atlantic 3-3
Delaware 3-3
Indiana St. 2-4

With this tiebreaker, since Indiana St. had the lowest head to head record amongst the 4 teams, they are eliminated.

For the 3 team tie, Longwood, Fla. Atlantic, and Delaware all went 2-2 against each other, so we move to point differential. Longwood had the lowest point differential at -40, so despite a great effort, they are eliminated.

Finally we have 2 team head to head between Fla. Atlantic and Delaware, in which Fla. Atlantic swept Delaware, which brings us to....

Final Group 14 Standings:

#1- Marquette 7-3 (+92)
#2- Fla. Atlantic 5-5 (+20)
#3- Delaware 5-5 (-7)
#4- Longwood 5-5 (-40)
#5- Indiana St. 5-5 (+5)
#6- CSU Bakersfield 3-7 (-70)

Marquette wins the group, but are another 7-3 group winner, the second of the tournament so far. Expect them to have a little higher seed than Georgetown, but not much. Fla. Atlantic finishes second with a 5-5 record, and they'll be a pretty low seed as well, probably in the 90's or so. Delaware finally comes out of the wacky tiebreaker situation, and their point differential is just enough to squeeze them into a wildcard spot.. for now. Unfortunately, we have another tiebreaker situation to deal with, as either TX Arlington or McNeese St. will be eliminated. Both are 5-5 with a -11 point differential, and obviously they didn't play each other. This means we drop down to the winning percentage of teams defeated. The winning percentage of the 4 teams that McNeese St. defeated in their group was .475, and the winning percentage of the 4 teams that TX Arlington defeated was .500. This means that McNeese St. has been eliminated.

Longwood and Indiana St. lose out on tiebreakers, and CSU Bakersfield tried to play spoiler but couldn't. Here are the wildcard standings through Group 14:

N.C. Central 7-3 (+63)
E. Michigan 7-3 (+50)
Iona 6-4 (+116)
Vermont 6-4 (+43)
N. Florida 6-4 (+9)
Pacific 5-5 (+14)
Buffalo 5-5 (+4)
W. Michigan 5-5 (+1)
Delaware 5-5 (-7)
St. Francis (NY) 5-5 (-8)
Nebraska 5-5 (-9)
TX Arlington 5-5 (-11)
McNeese St. 5-5 (-11) ELIMINATED
Wagner 5-5 (-20) ELIMINATED

Week 10 Schedule:

As far as deciding things within the group, the only game that has meaning is the St. Louis-UTEP game. If St. Louis wins, they will clinch second place. If UTEP wins, it will be a tiebreaker situation for second place, with the loser taking third. USC Upstate, Tennessee Tech, and IUPUI can do nothing to screw up group play, although IUPUI could play spoiler and hurt Rutgers' seed by beating them. The USC Upstate-Tennessee Tech game means absolutely nothing except the two teams will be playing for pride.

Week 10

UTEP- 76, St. Louis- 65
Rutgers- 69, IUPUI- 64
USC Upstate- 59, Tennessee Tech- 51

Final Group 15 standings:

#1- Rutgers 9-1 (+62)
#2- UTEP 6-4 (+37)
#3- St. Louis 6-4 (+15)
#4- USC Upstate 4-6 (-17)
#5- Tennessee Tech 3-7 (-59)
#6- IUPUI 2-8 (-38)

Rutgers wins the group easily, and with their 9-1 record may sneak into a top 25 or 30 seed, even though their point differential for a 9-1 team is not very good. UTEP finishes second, as they won both games against St. Louis. The 6-4 record looks good, especially since they have one of the higher point differentials among the 6-4 second place teams. St. Louis becomes the first ranked team not to be guaranteed a spot in the round of 128, as they'll have to sweat it out in the wildcard race. Right now, they are in a comfortable position with their 6-4 record, but there are still A LOT of groups to go. And poor TX Arlington, after all that tiebreaking they had to go through after the last group, has met their match. With St. Louis jumping into wildcard contention, TX Arlington will be going back home, as they are now officially eliminated. This makes Nebraska the next team on the chopping block. Here are those wildcard standings through group 15:

N.C. Central 7-3 (+63)
E. Michigan 7-3 (+50)
Iona 6-4 (+116)
Vermont 6-4 (+43)

It's a little late now but I think for simplicity, I would have just gone on point differential to eliminate all ties since that's what's being used for the final bracket. For instance, with the previous group, Florida Atlantic's +20 makes it - everyone else goes home.

I like how you think SI. If I was smart I would have just simplified the tiebreakers like you said. Fortunately things have worked out so far, but if I ever do another one of these again, I will go strictly point differential for tiebreaker within groups. I don't want to change it now, but definitely for next time, thanks for reading.

Week 10 Schedule:

Memphis @ Xavier
Howard @ Bryant
Sam Houston St. @ Portland

Memphis and Xavier have already clinched first and second in the group, respectively. Third place and the potential wildcard is still up for grabs. The only chance Howard has is if they win and Sam Houston St. loses. If they both win, or they both lose, Sam Houston St. will own the tiebreaker. Unless, of course, Howard loses a close one and Sam Houston St. gets blown out by about 50. All in all, it looks like Sam Houston St. will take third place.

Week 10

Memphis- 72, Xavier- 63
Howard- 56, Bryant- 53

Final Group 16 standings:

#1- Memphis 9-1 (+101)
#2- Xavier 6-4 (-12)
#3- Howard 5-5 (-26)
#4- Portland 4-6 (-39)
#5- Sam Houston St. 4-6 (+15)
#6- Bryant 2-8 (-39)

So Memphis wins the group, but that one loss will cost them at least a few spots in the seeding. Xavier finishes second but as of now is the worst second place finisher, especially with their double digit negative point differential. Howard does jump into third place with their Week 10 win and Sam Houston St.'s week 10 loss, but their point differential is not enough to keep them in the wildcard chase, and they are eliminated.

Here are the Wildcard standings after Group 16:

What a wild and wacky group this turned out to be. Richmond, who was seeded third in the group, has already clinched the group title. Florida A&M hasn't even really come close to winning, and of course the log jam in the middle with the other 4 teams at 5-4. With Yale and Bowling Green playing each other, one of those teams will be eliminated. Kansas St. has made a great second half group run after a disasterous start, but can they beat the odds, and Richmond? Vanderbilt looks to have the easiest chance to advance as they get lowly Florida A&M.

Week 10

Kansas St.- 72, Richmond- 69
Vanderbilt- 63, Florida A&M- 47
Bowling Green- 53, Yale- 49

To be fair, I have to use the tiebreaker set up that I used in all the groups. With a 3 team tie, the first tiebreaker becomes head to head. The head to head matchup between the 3 teams didn't settle anything as all 3 teams went 2-2 in their games against the other. Now we go to point differential which sees Bowling Green eliminated, and since we know that the head to head tiebreaker won't solve a 2 team tie, we go to points differential again. So here are the Final Standings for Group 17:

#1 Richmond 7-3 (+84)
#2 Kansas St. 6-4 (+77)
#3 Vanderbilt 6-4 (+2)
#4 Bowling Green 6-4 (-17)
#5 Yale 5-5 (+20)
#6 Florida A&M 0-10 (-166)

Richmond wins the group with a 7-3 record, which means they will be a fairly low seed out of the group winners, probably a seed low 40s, early 50s. Kansas St. won all 5 of their games in the second half of group play to finish second. They don't care what their seed is, they are just happy to be advancing after that horrendous 1-4 start. Vanderbilt takes third and is in good wildcard position with that 6-4 record, although they'd like their point differential to be a little higher. That means that we say goodbye to Nebraska, who is officially eliminated. Tough luck for Bowling Green, who might be the best fourth place team we've seen, and to Yale, who started 4-1, but faded late.

Here are the Wildcard standings through Group 17:

N.C. Central 7-3 (+63)
E. Michigan 7-3 (+50)
Iona 6-4 (+116)
Vermont 6-4 (+43)

Arizona, Texas, and Idaho have clinched the top 3 spots in group 18, at this point its just a matter of who will get what spot. If Arizona beats Lehigh in Week 10, they win the group. But if Arizona loses and Texas and/or Idaho wins, then we go into those fabulous tiebreaker situations. Regardless, all 3 teams look to be in good shape to move onto the round of 128. Even if Texas or Idaho lose to finish 6-4, unless they get totally blown out, those point differentials will be in good, good shape.

Week 10

Arizona- 67, Lehigh- 59
Texas- 71, Citadel- 70
Idaho- 74, Sacramento St.- 67

Here are the final Group 18 standings:

#1- Arizona 8-2 (+88)
#2- Idaho 7-3 (+81)
#3- Texas 7-3 (+27)
#4- Sacramento St. 4-6 (-43)
#5- Lehigh 2-8 (-52)
#6- Citadel 2-8 (-101)

Arizona wins group 18 and their 8-2 record will have them in the middle of the pack, maybe a seed of 20 to 30. Idaho wins the tiebreaker to clinch second place. They split with Texas but Idaho has better point differential. The 7-3 record and +81 point differential should give them a decent seed for a team that wasn't expected to advance. Never fear, Texas fans. The Longhorns are only the third 7-3 third place team. All the other potential wildcard teams are 6-4 and 5-5. Texas has to like their chances to move on. This does, however, eliminate St. Francis (NY), as their 5-5 (-8) record just isn't good enough to move on.

Here are the Wildcard standings after Group 18:

N.C. Central 7-3 (+63)
E. Michigan 7-3 (+50)

For those of you reading, couple things I would like your opinions on:

1. Group 58 only has 5 teams, I'm wanting to add a 6th team to that group. The reason is simple, trying to seed the teams 1-128 will be hard, as group 58 plays 2 less games. Adding a team that has already played but not qualified will give teams in group 58 10 games which will make it easier to seed things. But is it fair to give another team a shot? If I leave it at 5 teams for group 58, I'll have to figure out how to seed it with the 2 less games. After all, should a team that goes 8-0 in their group be treated the same as a team that goes 10-0?

2. When it comes to the seedings, should I just leave it alone and play it as it ends up? For instance, say that the group 1 winner and group 1 runner-up are seeded to meet in the first round? Or say 2 teams from the Big 12 are seeded to meet in the first round? Should I tweak things so that doesn't happen? Or should I just let it play out?

Give me your opinions guys, especially you SI since you seem to be the main responder on this dynasty report.

Even if it is a D2 team, there should be a 6th team to try and make those brackets consistent. Don't want to have to worry about weighting 8-0 vs 10-0, as you have already pointed out.

Detroit has clinched the runner up spot. If Georgia Tech wins, they will take third and move into wildcard contention. If Tech loses and either W&M or UNC Asheville win, then we will have a tiebreaker situation. St. Francis (PA) can play spoiler for GA Tech with a win.

Week 10

Wichita St.- 80, Detroit- 74
Georgia Tech- 66, St. Francis (PA)- 62
William and Mary- 66, UNC Asheville- 61

Final Group 19 standings:

#1 Wichita St. 10-0 (+156)
#2 Detroit- 6-4 (+54)
#3 Georgia Tech 5-5 (+19)
#4 William and Mary 4-6 (-46)
#5 UNC Asheville 3-7 (-72)
#6 St. Francis (PA) 2-8 (-114)

Wichita St. becomes only the 7th team to go undefeated in group play, and the first since group 9 when Syracuse did it. They could be looking at a top 10 seed as I don't expect too many other teams to go undefeated through group play. In fact with their point differential, a top 5 seed isn't out of the question. Detroit, with the 6-4 record, will be a fairly low seed, in the 80s, 90s range. Georgia Tech has a 5-5 record but a fairly nice point differential. Still that 5-5 record puts them near the bottom of the wildcard chase, but they are still in it. That means that Delaware is eliminated from further competition, and the next team on the chopping block is Western Michigan. Here are the wildcard standings after Group 19:

N.C. Central 7-3 (+63)
E. Michigan 7-3 (+50)
Texas 7-3 (+27)

Purdue can clinch group 20 with a win, but they are facing a Portland St. team that has won 3 straight. If Purdue falters and Creighton and/or Hampton wins, we have that all famous tiebreaker situation. As far as third place goes, if Creighton and/or Hampton lose, and Albany and/or High Point win, we could have a tiebreaker for third place. It's possible we could have another 4 team tiebreaker to decide second place and 3 team tiebreaker to decide third place. Let's hope not!

Week 10

Creighton- 78, Albany- 66
Purdue- 73, Portland St.- 48
High Point- 71, Hampton- 51

Final Group 20 standings:

#1- Purdue 7-3 (+42)
#2- Creighton 6-4 (+57)
#3- High Point 5-5 (+8)
#4- Hampton 5-5 (-6)
#5- Albany 4-6 (-4)
#6- Portland St. 3-7 (-97)

So Purdue wins the group, but will most likely be a seed between 50 and 56, as they are only the third team to go 7-3, which is the worst record so far of the group winners. Creighton (unfortunately, as I am a diehard Wichita St. fan and can't stand Creighton, lol) does advance and should be a middle of the pack seed as far as group runner up goes. Their point differential is one of the best for 6-4 teams, but there are a few 7-3 and 8-2 group runner ups that will be ahead of them. Also there are a lot of groups left to play. High Point, by virtue of their 20 point win over Hampton in the last game, gets the third place tiebreaker. High Point and Hampton split their meetings, and the 20 point High Point win gave them a better point differential. For now they are in the hunt, but just barely, as there are only 2 teams ahead of them on the chopping block. Well, there is only 1 now, as Western Michigan is officially eliminated. Buffalo is next on the chopping block, followed by High Point. Here are those wildcard standings after group 20: (I'm over a third of the way done with group play now, woo-hoo!)

One thing we do know is that Oregon will officially become the first ranked team not to advance to the round of 128. Even with a win over Evansville, they can't advance. Speaking of Evansville, all they need to do is beat Oregon one more time and they win the group. But if they lose and Oral Roberts wins, we have a tiebreaker situation. We could also have a tiebreaker for second and third place if Oral Roberts loses and Winthrop wins.

Week 10

Oregon- 68, Evansville- 67
Oral Roberts- 52, Rice- 36

Final Group 21 standings:

#3- Winthrop 5-5 (-46)
#4- Oregon 4-6 (+8)
#5- Morgan St. 4-6 (-6)
#6- Rice 3-7 (-54)

Oral Roberts and Evansville split their 2 meetings, so point differential gives Oral Roberts the Group 21 title! They'll be a fairly low seed, probably in the 40s or 50s. Evansville gets second and should be a decent seed. Winthrop takes third, but that point differential with a 5-5 record is nowhere near keeping them in the wildcard hunt. Winthrop is officially eliminated. Buffalo.. at least for one more week.. stays in the round of 128 as the last wildcard team. Here are the wildcard standings after Group 21:

Week 6

Wisconsin- 74, Texas A&M-CC- 68
Murray St.- 65, W. Carolina- 55
Drexel- 65, Rider- 48

Week 7

Murray St.- 71, Rider- 63

Week 8

Wisconsin- 66, Drexel- 57
Rider- 59, W. Carolina- 55
Murray St.- 67, Texas A&M-CC- 42

Week 9

W. Carolina- 64, Texas A&M-CC- 57
Murray St.- 82, Drexel- 80 (OT)
Wisconsin- 76, Rider- 66

Here are the standings after Week 9:

Wisconsin 8-1 (+66)
Murray St. 7-2 (+56)
Drexel 6-3 (+55)
W. Carolina 3-6 (-23)
Rider 2-7 (-63)
Texas A&M-CC 1-8 (-91)

Week 10 Schedule:

Wisconsin @ Murray St.
Texas A&M-CC @ Rider
Drexel @ W. Carolina

A Wisconsin win clinches group 22 for them, but a Murray St. win would split the series and force a tiebreaker for the group 22 title. Murray St. alone could clinch at least second place if Drexel loses. But if Drexel wins and Murray St. loses, then we have.. guess what... a tiebreaker for second.

Week 10

Wisconsin- 68, Murray St.- 64
Texas A&M-CC- 71, Rider- 65
W. Carolina- 62, Drexel- 53

Final Group 22 standings:

#1- Wisconsin 9-1 (+70)
#2- Murray St. 7-3 (+52)
#3- Drexel 6-4 (+46)
#4- W. Carolina 4-6 (-14)
#5- Rider 2-8 (-69)
#6- Texas A&M-CC 2-8 (-85)

Wisconsin wins the group and the 9-1 record should have them as a top 25 seed in the round of 128. There are a lot of groups ahead though. Murray St. is in good position for a mid range seed between 65-75, and Drexel loses their last 4. They are in third, firmly in the wildcard hunt for the moment. With them staying in, we do have to bid farewell to Buffalo. This makes High Point the next team on the chopping block. Here are the Wildcard Standings after Group 22:

N.C. Central 7-3 (+63)
E. Michigan 7-3 (+50)
Texas 7-3 (+27)

Arkansas St. 5-4 (+3)

Wofford 1-8 (-86)

Week 10 Schedule:

Oklahoma St. @ Robert Morris
Old Dominion @ Arkansas St.
Stetson @ Wofford

The O-State-Robert Morris winner wins the group. In Robert Morris' case, a win would give them the sweep over Oklahoma St. and they would win by tiebreaker. Arkansas St. needs a win to clinch third and boost their wildcard chances. If Old Dominion wins, then the battle for 3rd and 4th is a tiebreaker. And then there is Stetson and Wofford, which means absoulely nothing.... well unless you are a Stetson or Wofford fan that is.

Week 10

Oklahoma St.- 79, Robert Morris- 47
Old Dominion- 78, Arkansas St.- 70
Stetson- 66, Wofford- 47

Final Group 23 standings:

#1- Oklahoma St. 9-1 (+172)
#2- Robert Morris 7-3 (+25)
#3- Arkansas St. 5-5 (-5)
#4- Old Dominion 5-5 (-41)
#5- Stetson 3-7 (-46)
#6- Wofford 1-9 (-105)

Oklahoma St. wins the group convincingly with a 32 point thumping of Robert Morris. That point differential at 9-1 has them in position to be a top 15 seed easily. Robert Morris, on the other hand, didn't help their seed at all by getting thumped. They have one of the lowest point differentials for a 7-3 team, so they will probably be towards the bottom of the 128. Maybe in the 90 to 100 range. The Old Dominion win over Arkansas St. wasn't enough to bump them up to third place, but it did play spoiler. With the loss, Arkansas St. backs into third place and is officially eliminated from wildcard contention. The negative point differential combined with a 5-5 record won't get it done, and High Points breathes a sigh of relief.. for 1 more group at least. Good job by Old Dominion who was the last seeded team among this group. Here are the wildcard standings through group 23.

Week 10 Schedule:

Butler @ Wyoming
Austin Peay @ Long Beach St.
C. Conn. St. @ Troy

What a wild and crazy group. Butler has already clinched, but that's just because nobody else in the group is playing particularly well. Troy holds the tiebreaker over Austin Peay due to sweeping the 2 games against them. If Troy and Austin Peay both win.. or both lose, then Troy gets second place by tiebreaker. It's very possible that the Group 24 runner-up could be a 5-5 team with a negative point differential. Bad, bad group! Now, if Austin Peay wins and Troy loses, then Austin Peay sneaks into second place. Another potential scenario is if Wyoming wins and Austin Peay and Troy both lose.. then we have a 3 way tiebreaker for second. Yikes! One prediction I will make is that whoever takes third in this group will not be in the wildcard hunt for very long.

Week 10

Butler- 57, Wyoming- 54 (OT)
Austin Peay- 78, Long Beach St.- 76
Troy- 70, C. Conn. St.- 69 (OT)

Final Group 24 standings:

#1- Butler 8-2 (+63)
#2- Troy 6-4 (-35)
#3- Austin Peay 6-4 (+6)
#4- Wyoming 4-6 (-16)
#5- Long Beach St. 3-7 (-5)
#6- C. Conn. St. 3-7 (-13)

So Butler wins the group and will probably be a seed between 30 and 40. At this point its so hard to guess, but they seem to be a middle of the pack group winner. Troy gets second place in the group. To my surprise I found that there were 2 other group runner ups that finished with a 6-4 record and negative point differential. However, Troys' point differential is by far worse than both of theirs. Right now Troy is looking at seed #116, which would be the worst seed for the group runner ups. I don't expect it to get much better unless we have a 5-5 group runner up. And Austin Peay takes third. I was wrong about the third place team not being in wildcard contention. That 6-4 record for Austin Peay gives them at least 4 or 5 groups without having to worry about being eliminated. Sadly, that does eliminate High Point. We wish them farewell and congratulate them on a good run. This makes Pacific next on the chopping block. There are just 2 teams left in wildcard contention that are 5-5, all the others are 6-4. Moral of the story? Finish group play with at least a 6-4 record to even stand a chance. And lets applaud Troy and Austin Peay, who were seeded 5th and 6th in this group, respectively. Both have a chance to go dancing (make the round of 128.) Here are the wildcard standings through Group 24:

N.C. Central 7-3 (+63)
E. Michigan 7-3 (+50)
Texas 7-3 (+27)
Iona 6-4 (+116)

Week 10 Schedule:

N. Carolina @ Providence

N. Carolina has clinched the group title. The battle is for second and third place. If Providence wins and Jacksonville St. loses, Providence gets second. Vice versa, if Jacksonville St. wins and Providence loses, Jacksonville St. gets second place. If they both win, or if they both lose, it becomes a tiebreaker situation.

Week 10

Providence- 70, N. Carolina- 61
Jacksonville St.- 67, UL Monroe- 45
Delaware St.- 62, Texas Tech- 52

Final Group 25 standings:

#1- N. Carolina 8-2 (+73)
#2- Providence 7-3 (+57)
#3- Jacksonville St. 7-3 (+55)
#4- Delaware St. 4-6 (-29)
#5- Texas Tech 2-8 (-59)
#6- UL Monroe 2-8 (-97)

So N. Carolina wins the group, but losing that last game to Providence will drop them down a few seeds. Providence clinches second via the fact that they swept Jacksonville St., and should be a middle of the pack seed. Jacksonville St. is in great position in the wildcard hunt, as only one team has a better standing than them right now. Unfortunately that means we say goodbye to Pacific, who is officially eliminated, leaving Georgia Tech as the last 5-5 team in the wildcard chase. The Yellow Jackets are next on the chopping block. Here are the wildcard standings through group 25:

N.C. Central 7-3 (+63)
Jacksonville St. 7-3 (+55)
E. Michigan 7-3 (+50)
Texas 7-3 (+27)
Iona 6-4 (+116)
Drexel 6-4 (+46)
Vermont 6-4 (+43)
#15 St. Louis 6-4 (+15)
N. Florida 6-4 (+9)
Austin Peay 6-4 (+6)
Vanderbilt 6-4 (+2)
Georgia Tech 5-5 (+19)
Pacific 5-5 (+14) ELIMINATED
High Point 5-5 (+8) ELIMINATED
Buffalo 5-5 (+4) ELIMINATED
W. Michigan 5-5 (+1) ELIMINATED
Arkansas St. 5-5 (-5) ELIMINATED
Delaware 5-5 (-7) ELIMINATED

Wagner 5-5 (-20) ELIMINATED
Howard 5-5 (-26) ELIMINATED
Winthrop 5-5 (-46) ELIMINATED

As we are through group 25 now, this does mean that the last of the ranked teams have played. If you recall, I decided to only rank the top 25 teams. Let's take a look and see how the ranked teams stand:

23 of the 25 ranked teams are safely in the round of 128.
1 of the other 2 teams is in the wildcard hunt and will be sweating it out for a while.
The other ranked team.. well they are going home, as they have been eliminated from the tournament.

Week 10

Final Group 26 Standings:

#1- Pitt 9-1 (+123)

#3- NJIT 5-5 (-37)
#4- Tennessee St. 4-6 (-6)
#5- Hofstra 3-7 (-21)
#6- Loyola (IL) 3-7 (-46)

So Pitt wins the group convincingly and should get a top 25-35 seed. Charleston has a negative point differential and a 6-4 record. That will add up to a very low seed, most likely a sub 100 seed, if not close. NJIT takes third, but the point differential with a 5-5 record is not nearly enough to stay in the wildcard hunt. While Georgia Tech celebrates staying in the wildcard chase for at least one more group, NJIT is packing their bags and heading home. Here are the wildcard standings through group 26:

VCU has already clinched the group by a large margin and with a win will join the illustrious group of undefeated teams during group play. If Arkansas wins they clinch second place in this group. If Arkansas loses, then all heck breaks lose. The W. Kentucky-UNC Greensboro loser will be eliminated, but there could still be a 3 way tie for second place.

Week 10

VCU- 85, Arkansas- 69
W. Kentucky- 84, UNC Greensboro- 72
SMU- 56, Columbia- 55

Unfortunately we have a 3 team tie breaker situation. To be fair, I have to use the tiebreaker system I have used for all the other groups (which now that I look back on it may not be the best tiebreaker to use), so we start with head to head.

SMU 3-1
Arkansas 2-2
W. Kentucky 1-3

This means W. Kentucky is eliminated. And since SMU swept Arkansas, our final standings look like this:

#1- VCU 10-0 (+106)
#2- SMU 5-5 (-22)
#3- Arkansas 5-5 (+1)
#4- W. Kentucky 5-5 (+44)
#5- UNC Greensboro 4-6 (-45)
#6- Columbia 1-9 (-84)

VCU wins the group with ease, and should be a top 15 seed, maybe top 10, depending on how many other teams finish group play undefeated. SMU with a 5-5 record and negative point differential sneaks into the tournament. Look for them to be see 128, which is the worst possible seed for group runner ups. Unfortunately, the tiebreaker drops Arkansas to third place, and the point differential isn't enough to keep them in the tournament. The Razorbacks are officially eliminated, and Georgia Tech stays alive for another group. Here are the wildcard standings:

N.C. Central 7-3 (+63)
Jacksonville St. 7-3 (+55)
E. Michigan 7-3 (+50)
Texas 7-3 (+27)
Iona 6-4 (+116)
Drexel 6-4 (+46)
Vermont 6-4 (+43)
#15 St. Louis 6-4 (+15)
N. Florida 6-4 (+9)
Austin Peay 6-4 (+6)
Vanderbilt 6-4 (+2)
Georgia Tech 5-5 (+19)
Pacific 5-5 (+14) ELIMINATED
High Point 5-5 (+8) ELIMINATED
Buffalo 5-5 (+4) ELIMINATED
W. Michigan 5-5 (+1) ELIMINATED
Arkansas 5-5 (+1) ELIMINATED
Arkansas St. 5-5 (-5) ELIMINATED
Delaware 5-5 (-7) ELIMINATED
St. Francis (NY) 5-5 (-8) ELIMINATED
Nebraska 5-5 (-9) ELIMINATED
TX Arlington 5-5 (-11) ELIMINATED
McNeese St. 5-5 (-11) ELIMINATED
Wagner 5-5 (-20) ELIMINATED
Howard 5-5 (-26) ELIMINATED
