RIP: Robert White
Chuck Yeager gets most of the press for jet-era test pilots for being the first to break the sound barrier, but Robert M. White was the first to pass Mach 4, 5, and 6 during an 8 month span in 1961, and was later the first person to get astronaut wings while piloting a conventional (albeit rocket powered) aircraft.
Robert M. White dies at 85; pilot made history with a 1962 test flight into space - latimes.com
