MS talks about difficulty of streaming 360 games to X1. The final comment was very interesting, basically saying that they'll be interested to see how Sony does on their efforts.

I remember in the early gaming days where we'd see trailers and say, "Yeah, but that's not how the game really looks!" We've come a long way from those days. Now we see Forza and Gran Turismo trailers and are pretty confident that they'll look just like what is shown on the videos.

I know this was a worry from some in the gaming community. Looks like the voice recognition still needs some work. Though I'm honestly not sure it's that big of a deal because I don't think 95% of X1 users were even going to bother with this feature anyway.

Voice recognition ALWAYS requires some training to learn the particulars of a person's voice. ALWAYS.

No, you just don't understand. This confirms all of the concerns that everyone in the gaming community had about the XBox One. Everyone cancel your preorders while you still can!

More great news if you're a console sports fan. First, the info that you can carry your career forward in MLB '14: The Show. Now, there's word that the next-gen version of NBA 2K14 has a GM mode that will allow for management of teams if you don't want to play the games. Really looks like some of these non-EA franchises are taking advantage of the lack of innovation by EA currently to separate themselves with new modes while not removing any existing features. Great stuff.

I suspect that by the time Sony and Microsoft work out the kinks with streaming games, it will be so far down the line nobody will care about 360/PS3 games.

I don't know about that. I'm playing a lot of last gen (PS2) games on my PS3 thanks to the PS Plus program. If it's a relatively cheap option or is added to the PS Plus giveaway program, I'll likely play it quite a bit. It's a great way to catch up on games you missed.

Certain games yes, most people are not going to go back and play NHL 08 on their XBone. But I have tons of RPG's, at least 6 of them on PS3 and a few more on 360 that I haven't finished and I'd like to. My backlog is ridiculous. Guess I have to keep at least 4 consoles hooked up at the same time.

Same here. I will keep 4 systems hooked up until I finish a few games I am still playing on the 360 and PS3.

I recently played Shadow of the Colossus and will soon be playing Ico for the first time since I didn't have a PS2. There will probably be people interested who didn't have a PS3 that would want to play The Last of Us on PS4 or people whose first Halo game is Halo 5 and wants to go back and play the previous games in the series.

good PR move to say it but pretty meaningless. All they have to do is not put their day 1 update online until a day or two before launch and nothing will be different. The xbox kid not only still gets to play early but microsoft is bringing him to events.

Depends on the game. Nobody's going to give a shit about old sports games, or predominantly online games like a Battlefield or a Call of Duty with newer stuff out there.

But RPGs, platformers, stuff that doesn't have an annual release in the franchise? Absolutely.

Even stuff that does have reasonably regular releases, like Ratchet & Clank, will likely still have people wanting to play the older versions.

Totally missing the point. Playing the system isn't the issue. It's totally a PR issue. While Sony is allowing anyone who gets the system early to post videos (and basically help pimp their console for free), MS is refusing to allow any unboxing/gameplay videos to reside on the internet until release day. It's just plain dumb. A tech business should know better.

There's a couple more videos that just went up from another person who received one of the early X1 consoles. We'll see if they yank that video too or get smart and leave it alone to avoid any more PR damage.

The original post was more about my scepticism of Microsoft or Sony being able to pull off streaming games to a satisfactory level at any point in the next few years, and the reasons will likely be beyond their control.

The latency of your average home internet connection is going to lead to lag, which will make action games unworkable. Until we are all using lightning fast, low latency connections, streaming games will be a lousy experience.

Which also totally misses the point. A surprising number of tech executives are quite ignorant about how important social media can be to the success of their products as demonstrated in this example. You're absolutely correct that most don't pay attention to unboxing/interface videos........unless a company does something stupid to bring attention to them. There's nothing to gain by MS by blocking these videos. It only insinuates that they may have something to hide, even if that's not the case.

This isn't rocket science here. This is Business 101 and MS seems to continue to make basic mistakes in the run-up to the release of their console.

and what impact do you really think this is going to have?

I've never watched an unboxing video in my life, I saw the report on the guy getting banned yesterday, and within an hour of reading that I read about the guy being invited to launch events and everything being ok.

I'll be getting a PS4 because that's what the boy wants, but this is so insignificant to me it amazes me that after Microsoft righted the wrong that it was even posted here.

You're not wrong, but that doesn't mean there won't be a demand there for those older games. I mean, I dunno. Maybe the HD remaster trend we saw this generation will manifest itself into the next gen and we'll see remaster collections for PS4/XB1 of 360/PS3 games.

But I still think there will be demand for more of those older games, even via streaming, than you think.

Evidently MS didn't. They've done what I suspected may happen. The next video hasn't been removed. It's kind of like a crowd yelling at a referee in football and then the ref suddenly throws the flag. If enough people tell you you're wrong, you'll reverse course and realize that you may just be wrong.

Here's the latest video which shows basically what Larry Hyrb mentioned would happen. Console is blocked. It also appears there's not even a way to play the console locally without the update.

If the point you are trying to make is that you are an insufferable prick that obsesses over any perceived misstep by Microsoft, then I guess people aren't missing the point.

Here's a clear example of viral marketing done right. Obviously the arrival is staged as the box is a DirecTV box that it was rewrapped in, but Sony sent over a console at no cost to a guy who has almost 700K followers on YouTube. He often gets reposted on many internet sites, so it basically cost Sony a few hundred dollars to get a bunch of viral attention on sites all over the internet. The guy is like a NASCAR wreck, but that's what people love to see.

Edit: FYI......the attached GIF has also gone viral of him tossing out a MS product to make room for the PS4. Francis said that he was provided the console by Sid Shuman. He was allowed to play the console for a couple hours for the purpose of viral marketing and will get a PS4 for his video.

+1, I peeked in here out of curiosity w/ the releases getting close, but its really the same as it ever was. I hope no casual observers on FOFC ever tries to use these threads to legitimately figure out the pros and cons when trying to pick a new console. This right now is a bigger cesspool than the Obama thread on its worst days, which makes NO SENSE AT ALL. We are all gamers who love good games and just want everyone to deliver neat things to us right?

I picked up the PS4 controller and camera today while out. Someone was asking about the differences in the DS3 and DS4, so I thought I'd post some photos. Here's the top view. Difference visible are:

-Touch pad in the middle.
-Share and Options buttons replace the Select and Start buttons.
-Microphone built into the controller.
-Dimpled tops of sticks to allow better control while playing.
-Buttons don't stick out quite as much as DS3.
-Handles are much rounder and flatter than DS3.

On the back:

-You can see the stick bases don't stick out of the bottom of the controller like they used to. Really feels much better when holding it because of that.
-No more screw holes in the back.
-Shoulder buttons are much narrower than before. Makes a lot more sense.

On the front of the controller:

-Can really see the difference in size of buttons.
-Bottom buttons on front are shaped like gun triggers instead of being rounded off like the DS3.

Here's the camera as well. First pic shows the camera on the mount (flat black piece behind camera. Second pic shows how the mount can be flexed to easily sit on the top of your TV. Also, the camera can twist 35 degrees in either way to aim it where you want it.

I thought this was funny..

Quote:
I will give MS credit. Everything about the xbox one as a product. The box, the cables and the system itself, look extremely high quality. You can tell MS invest a lot of money into their products. At least this time around. I was comparing the cables, box quality and controller build that come with the PS4 and with the XBox ONE. And the XBox ONE makes the PS4 look like dollar store garbage. The PS4 system looks high quality but the plastic they use is of less quality of the Xbox ONE. You can tell Sony goes the cheapest way possible, where MS invest more money in that department. I am getting the PS4, not Xbox ONE but man i can be honest with my self unlike some people.

Screws are still there. They're just flush with the controller instead of the sunken holes. I think the sunken holes were a proprietary thing, so you couldn't just use a regular screwdriver to take the controller apart and swap the battery. You had to send it in to Sony.

The new screw setup makes me wonder if battery replacement will be more user friendly going forward.

It makes it $40 cheaper than the X1 equivalent. I bought the camera solely because of my two daughters. They play a lot of the games that are camera-based, so they'll get good use out of it.

Interestingly enough, the Hong Kong PS4 release info shows just how overpriced the X1 really is. While MS is charging basically $100 extra for their camera, Sony is offering a release package deal with camera over there. And the price difference is staggering......

Quote:
The PlayStation 4 will launch in Hong Kong on December 17 for 3380 HK dollars ($463), Sony announced this week. The set including the PlayStation 4 Eye will go for 3680 HK dollars ($474)

They're charging a grand total of $11 for a bundled PS4 Eye. Don't be shocked if you see this bundle come stateside to further accentuate the price difference. While the release price is what it is, MS is in a quandry as we move forward too.

Saw this article today. This reminds me of the PS3 release when we were told how much is only possible with the Cell processor.

News: Forza 5 is 1080p because Turn 10 could rely on Xbox One's cloud during development - Xbox 360 - The Official Magazine

Just a rumor at this point, but some indications that yet another X1 launch title does not have 1080p native resolution like its PS4 counterpart. MS needs to get into the 3rd party multiplatform developer offices pronto and show these guys how to develop for their system at 1080p. It's obvious that it can be some on some first-party games. They've got to do a better job of helping out their 3rd party partners.

I take it MBBF still isn't going to buy an Xbox One.

Finally have a video of the PS4 UI. It's taken directly from the Bravia TV interface. Looks like this will be their UI across all of their products.

Oooo, ooo, I get to MBBF!

About that whole "you can resell your used games on the PS4" thing:

Sony to disallow resell or renting of PlayStation games after initially supporting it? - Neowin

I am going to assume that this has been misinterpreted, because going back on their E3 statements could be a disastrous PR move, especially so close to the release date.

I'm going to assume a lawyer got overeager with boilerplate and someone will correct it soon. But it's not in the tradition of this thread to go with the boring interpretation...

This is one of my main reasoning of getting the XBox1 over the PS4. I hated the PS3 UI and it's looking like the Xbox1 will win in this department again - IMO.

The PS3 UI is an abomination, IMO. I can't believe it didn't get a complete redesign.

I'm not a big UI guy but the PS3 was terrible and the PS4 looks terrible too.

You guys actually interact with the UI on your consoles that much that you consider it a factor in which console you buy??

On the XBox? Meh, not really. On the PS3? You better flippin' believe it. It's so difficult to find anything and/or adjust settings, or even browse the freakin' store, that it forces you to get nice and personal with it.

The real question.. is it as good as the kinect.. and question #2 will it have the same support from developers as the kinect does, since it's not included?
