TCY: Back To The Future

Hi All,

This is my first attempt at running a dynasty post, so here goes......

The idea here is that I would do anything to change the current NCAA Bowl
system into any form of a playoff system. After much deliberation, I decided
to hop into the DeLorean and dial up the spring of 2004 to find a way to
change the past for the betterment of the future!

Now, I won’t tell you how I did it, but let me just say that I was successful!!
And, since I am already here, I decided to take the new system for a spin.
Since this is such a smart move for the future of college football, I decided
to take a smart team and see if I could make something of them.

And Away We Go…………

The Setup

I will be taking on the task of bringing the Northwestern Wildcats a national
title under the new playoff system. I will be making all the decisions except
for time management to which I will bow to the coaching staff. I have the
game set to reflect approximate prestige and academic values of the schools
in 2004. The Solecismic Eight resides in Illinois also.

The Recruiting Rules

1) I can only recruit in the bordering states with Illinois, so besides the
home state there will be Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, and Indiana.
These are the ONLY states that I will ever be allowed to recruit from.

2) Since we are a school of higher learning, recruiting must also reflect
this. So the requirements to be considered are 1200 Test and 2.50 GPA.

3) (Based on sabotai’s recruiting rules from his TCY: Connecticut
Huskies Dynasty) We will incorporate restrictions based on recruiting colors.
a. We will be able to recruit any combination of colored recruits of the
Black, Red and Blue groups equal to or less than the total number of available
scholarships for next season. (Ex. 12 available scholarships equals 12 or less
players I am able to recruit in the stated colored groups.)
b. Unlimited Green grouped players can be recruited every year.

4) No Bribing.

Let’s Get Started!!!

Roster Breakdown

Ok, now it is time to get down and dirty. As
you can see from the roster that I posted earlier, we are in for a loooong
season.

Quarterbacks
Code:
Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate Andersen, Reggie 15 QB Jr 24 43 Fulton, Earl 10 QB So 20 20 Helton, Walter 8 QB Sr 27 27 Schultz, Bobby 2 QB Fr* 14 55

We will be running a pro-style offense and use the pro formation, as such we
will need passers. Something we currently don't have. Andersen will get the
nod to start. He has a decent arm and will make some plays, but he will
scramble too much and will probably put the ball on the ground way too
much. Shultz is getting redshirted as a decent prospect. QB will be a
recruiting concern, but may be able to bite it for another year.

Running backs
Code:
Connell, Gene 47 RB Sr 43 43 Curtis, Billy 40 RB So 34 51 Lowe, Carlton 42 RB So 42 61 Newcomb, Willie 35 RB Jr 28 48 Read, Daniel 31 RB So* 41 73 Gardner, Kim 41 FB So 21 46 Rawlins, Jimmy 36 FB Fr* 20 44 Doyle, Cornelius 49 FB* So 17 33 Pierce, Carl 48 FB* Fr 19 24

We will start with RB Carlton Lowe and FB Kim Gardner. The RBs should do
alright for a year or two, but FB will need to be targeted. RB Read and FB
Rawlins start the season redshirted.

Receivers
Code:
Belt, Rich 82 TE Jr 37 69 Flynn, D.J. 97 TE So 30 33 Leech, Rex 95 TE So 18 40 Phillips, Dwayne 89 TE So 18 67 Harris, Byron 90 TE* So 10 32 Bryant, Martin 87 WR Jr 27 27 Giles, Robbie 83 WR Jr 18 20 Monroe, Brent 80 WR Jr 28 28 Walton, Roman 81 WR Fr 16 25 Harwell, Bernard 6 WR* Fr 17 31 McKnight, Clyde 85 WR* Fr 15 20 Willett, Mitchell 88 WR* Jr 15 34

UGH! While TE is serviceable, WR is a pure mess! WR Monroe could surprise
some, but Bryant is weak as a split end. All the other WRs are just pathetic.
WR will be a main recruiting need.

Offensive Line
Code:
Bragg, J.R. 56 C So 30 43 Rose, Rickey 54 C* Fr 11 66 Shepherd, Willie 51 C Sr 52 52 Bell, Donnie 61 G So* 20 70 Foley, Alonzo 66 G Sr* 29 29 Marshall, Jose 60 G Fr 6 70 Swope, Russell 62 G Jr* 21 51 Jones, Wayne 69 T Sr 41 41 Macri, Donnell 64 T Jr 31 31 Yocum, Joseph 72 T Sr* 34 35 Tomich, Charlie 73 T Fr 15 37 Vance, Norman 65 T So 14 37

The 2004 starting line will be C Belt, G Bell and G Foley, and T Jones and
Yokum. Definitely weak, but they could have some decent games, just
nothing consistant. C Rose is the only redshirt in the bunch and could
develope into something. Other than that, we need major upgrades here.
Tackles and Guards this year and Centers next.

So, that is a brief review of the Offense for this year. I will get to the
Defense tomorrow and get in a week or two of the season. I hope to be in
this for the long haul, so time isn't an issue.

The Wilcats are just about ready to pounce in 2004,....... er, maybe roll
over???

Roster Breakdown Continued

With the ugly offense already broken down, we now take a peek at the Northwestern defensive team.
The defense is not aweful, but in our division it is just going to be on the ropes the whole year,......
the outlook is not good.

Defensive Line
Code:
Pritchett, Dale 99 DE Sr* 40 56 Sanford, Gene 70 DE Jr 38 57 Schaeffer, Keith 78 DE Sr* 37 57 Peltier, Jackie 77 DE* Fr 20 33 Rogers, Vince 71 DE So* 6 21 Hatcher, Alex 76 DT Sr 36 36 Rolfe, Nick 74 DT Sr* 23 46 Bandhauer, Dwight 79 DT Fr 8 32 Beane, Jerry 96 DT Jr* 19 24
The defensive line is below average, but could be scrappy. Senior DEs Pritchett and Schaeffer are
decent enough and DE Gene Sanford(Jr) could replace either without any noticable letdown. Defensive
Tackle is a different story. We are going to be very weak up the middle! Starters Hatcher(Sr) and Rolfe(Sr)
are below average and have little to no endurance with very weak backups.

The only player to be redshirted here will be DE Jackie Peltier(Fr) who is a walkon that will fill a need in
the future. Also, with the 4-3 being used, both positions will need to be recruited this year!

Linebackers
Code:
Bowen, Derek 58 ILB Jr 50 50 Layton, Fred 92 ILB Fr 8 33 Ogden, Mack 94 ILB Jr 44 57 Browning, Clarence 59 ILB* Fr 11 41 Bailey, Mitch 44 OLB So 33 53 Booker, Horace 91 OLB Sr 46 46 Burks, Bryant 55 OLB So* 16 35 Sellers, Hunter 57 OLB Sr 44 52 Boatwright, Leon 93 OLB Jr* 15 50
ILB is looking good enough for this year and next if we can stay healthy. LB Bowen(Jr) will start and is decent
at stopping the run and is decent in coverage. Ogden is a good backup with relatively the same skill set.

On the outside, Sellers is a good balanced LB, unfortunately he only has the endurance of an 80 year old man!
Bailey(So) is a good run-stopper and some room to improve. With Sellers low endurance, Booker(Sr) will see a
ton of playing time and should be used on passing downs. Another OLB or two will help and be recruited.

Defensive Backs
Code:
Brown, Stephen 43 CB Fr 31 52 Tempest, Julio 30 CB Sr 34 43 Wendt, Al 34 CB Sr 36 53 Cole, Rod 27 CB Fr 13 49 Garner, Roman 29 CB Fr 9 60 Oliver, Jeremy 39 S So 27 34 Starks, Ethan 46 S Sr 32 32 Steadman, Lonnie 45 S Sr 32 52 Wooden, Bart 24 S Sr 47 63 Zellars, Arnold 37 S Sr* 31 31
We are in a world of hurt here! CB is better that S, but it is terrible and will be burned early and often most
weeks. CBs Wendt(Sr) and Brown(Fr) are ok at best, with Brown having some decent upside. Cole(Fr) will be a
decent backup and also be a part of the kick return team.

At Safety, Wooden(Sr) and Steadman(Sr) are decent with Steadman having a good nose for the ball. The
backups are just that,... backups. No Redshirts here and both positions are major concerns in recruiting.

Kickers
Code:
Matuatia, Aaron 3 P Jr 38 53 Terrell, Phil 18 P Sr 37 37 Timlin, Tyrell 16 P Jr 51 64 Montague, Skip 14 K Jr 44 49 Preston, Wally 12 K Jr 51 69
The kicking game is solid,..... and it is going to need to be! Timlin(Jr) and Preston(Jr) are both good and
would be decent on any team. Being juniors, and having decent backups, this is a position that will not be
heavily recruited this year.

So there it is in all its glory! The 2004 Wildcats! May God help us!!!

Week Two Game Report

Northwestern (0-0) VS Texas Christian (0-0) (-7)
And so the long season begins. TCU rolls over the Wildcats with a pounding running game. And, as expected,
the passing game of the Wildcats was aweful! Some offense adjustments also need to be made.

Week Three Game Report

#33 Arizona State (1-0) (-2) VS Northwestern (0-1)

No new recruits this week, so no report.

8 Penalties for 80 yards against a good team will almost always end in failure, and so it was in the Wildcats first home game under the new regime. We definitely played a better game than last week against a better opponent, but still fell way short.

It still looks like we need to make more adjustments to the offense and Andersen still runs way too much. Stay tuned!

Week Three Top 25

Big Ten has a very strong presence in the top 10 with 4 teams. The Wildcats continue to slide toward the bottom,...... ok, maybe it is more of a nose-dive than a slide.

Just a quick note. I am here at work now going back over this brief history and find that I am wanting more info on my recruits. So tonight, after I get home from work, I will post the scouting numbers for each player. After the recruiting class is signed, I will flesh out each recruit to give them more of an identity.

Unbelievably, we were favored at home!? Well, we went out and proved them wrong! This just in,....... the Wildcats have NO offense!!! Also, we threw way too much. More adjustments to come! Defense played decent. By the way, notice the 12 punts!!!

Week Six Injury Report

DT Jerry Beane (Jr) (1 tkl) tore his Achilles Tendon during the Arizona State game and will be sidelined for 10 weeks.

OLB Mitch Bailey (So) (11 Tkl, 4 Asst) Strained his hamstring vs Kansas and is listed as probable for this weeks game.

FB Kim Gardner (So) (5 Carries - 3 yds) Sprained his ankle Vs Kansas and is listed as probable and could take a week to completely heal.

P Tyrell Timlin (Jr) (23 punts/ 31.7 yds per punt) Severely Strained his hamstring Vs Kansas and is listed as out and could take as much as 28 weeks to heal!

CB Rob Cole (Fr) (1 Tkl, 1 Def) Is done for the year as he ruptured his ACL Vs Kansa and will be sidelined for up to 41 weeks!

ILB Derek Bowen (Jr) (42 Tkl, 8 Asst) Starting Linebacker and defensive team captain has the Flu and is listed as probable!

****Note**** The Wildcats also announce that there will be a change at QB as they call up Freshman Bobby Shultz. Shultz is a true pocket passer and a way better fit than any of our other QBs at the moment. Andersen will be his backup. As far as we are currently concerned, it can't get any worse than what it is!

Week Six Game Report

#2 Ohio State (3-0) (-22) VS Northwestern (0-4)

HOLY COW!!! The Northwestern Wildcats pull off what could be the biggest upset of the season, and definitely will be one for the school record books, as they beat #2 Ohio State 24-10!!

The Wildcats got to the Buckeyes QBs and recorded 4 sacks on the day. But the biggest defensive play was a second quarter sack of Ohio State star QB Schwartz that knocked him out of the game with a seperated shoulder. The Wildcat defense also shut down the run and contained the Buckeyes and maintained field position throughout the game. The interception for TD was the icing on the cake!

The true freshman QB Shultz held his own and then some. Shultz finished with a QB rating of 109.9 against one of the best teams in the country. The line did a fantastic job against the rush, allowing only one sack, but could do nothing for the run game.

Needless to say, the Northwestern Athletic Department will be working on the stadium this week re-erecting the goal posts!

Week Seven Game Report

Indiana (2-3) VS Northwestern (1-4)(-2)

Looks like the Wildcats were leveraging their upset victory over Ohio State to garner a 2 point favorite status in this weeks game Vs Indiana. Unfortunately for the home team, Indiana didn't believe the hype.

What a sloppy day on the field, both in weather and play! Both teams turned the ball over 4 times. But, as sloppy as the game was, it was a doozy with Indiana finally winning after the third overtime! Final score, Indiana 47 - Northwestern 44!

Wildcats QB Bobby Shultz looks to be a keeper for the next few years in this offense. The question is, will he have the same coaching staff?!

Week Eight Recruiting

This is an off week for the Wildcats, but the recruiting drive goes on!

We lost several recruits this week as WR Dominic Blalock will be headed for Louisville, DE Bo Reid will be heading to Rockford , DT Brian Shapiro is going to Indiana and S Russell Weaver is off to Illinois.

But all is not doom and gloom for the home team as Northwestern signs it's first recruit of the new Wildcats,...... S Dwayne Wynn!

Wynn is a true Blue Chip prospect and his signing may be the trigger that makes other recruits consider Northwestern just a tad bit more. Here are Wynn's stats: 63 Tackles, 3.5 sacks and 12 Interceptions in 9 games! (I will sum up all the rankings at the end of the season for all my recruits) That said, Wynn has been picked for the All-Country Team!!! Not bad for the first ever recruit to sign!!!

2004 Recruiting Needs: QB?, FB?, WR x2, G, T, DE, DT x2, OLB, CB x2, S x2.
