Tech Question - Admin rights/HDD issues

I do not know how to title this one...

My laptop's mobo died on me...I have pulled the HDD out of it and I bought a SATA external case for it.

All I am trying to do is get the data off the drive so I can format it and have a 300GB external drive....here is my issue.

Application Data, Documents and Settings...basically any of my systems "Hidden" folders I can not access, and everything I need now is in the App Data folder...the drive has Vista on it...the OS on my laptop is XP...anytime I try to access the Application Data folder, I am getting an access denied error.

Anyone know any way around this? Or how to make this work?

You might have to get a bootable Linux CD like Knoppix and do the file transfer that way.

Yeah....It's what I was thinking and hopping to avoid, but if I have to...no big deal.
