Hrm, well disappointingly the website seems to have no support area -- no FAQ or anything that I can find. I shot the support e-mail address an e-mail, so hopefully that will help.

My game has arrived... Now, thanks to work, I wont actually get to play it until sometime in mid-to-late October, but it's nice to know I have it.

Any thoughts? I'm going to go check out the FAQs and such, but thought someone here might be quicker to help with something that is probably blatantly obvious that I'm missing.

I'll give this a shot.

Awhile ago, when I was installing Rome: Total War, I was having installation issues as well -- and this was through a DVD-ROM drive. What I ended up doing, was going to the website of my DVD-ROM drive's manufacturer (in this case, Pioneer), and downloaded a Firmware update that they had available.

Perhaps you can try the same thing? That's the only thing I can possibly think of.

Make sure you're not misreading a B for an 8 or a O for an 0. I usually end up having to type in serial numbers a couple times because I'm old and my eyesight sucks...

You might want to try contacting StarForce directly. Rumor has it that they are pretty good in helping people with problems.

Thanks for the input guys.

I contacted support, they sent me an e-mail this morning, and it fixed the problem. Hukarez, I think your solution may have worked as well -- they said that the problem was that StarForce was having trouble reading the disc from my DVD drive. Anyhow, it's working now, so I'm off to play

Hmm.. wonder if that is why Starforce takes forever and a day to finish? Seems like it takes a good minute or two to get passed that and have the game fire up. Or is this normal

Ok, I must get some sleep, really. This game can take you into hours of play in what seems like an hour of play. Very well done, imo. I'm quite surprised at how much fun this game is. I'm just poking around learning as I go, but wow.. this game is fun.

Thanks Bill!

I don't just buy a game on release day much anymore as I like to read impressions before purchasing a game.

For those wondering, they gave me a 'rescue code,' basically a CD-Key tied to my computer only. I think they don't know why StarForce didn't like mine, so they tied a key to my system specs to make it work on this computer only.

I am playing the heck out of this game. Died on my last try, but now I'm a Pirate and thanks to Command and Conquer, I just kicked some major butt on the RTS misson.

This game just whittles the hours away.

I picked this game up a week or so ago and I love it. Tons of fun. I started out trading and doing government missions to build up my bank account. Then I bought some new equipment and hull, upgraded them, and have just started to whip up on some Dominators. I'm having a great time.

I ordered SR2 based on this thread.

..can I have my life back, please?

A couple of things I don't understand -- why haven't I progressed to Cadet even though I've liberated a system and killed 4 Dominators (along with two "other" which were described as "pirates" -- I'll bet the answer is in that fact right there..)

Since you only need 30 points to make Cadet, and they pretty much hand that to you after your first system win, I have to guess that I'm being penalized for those two "other" kills. When is a pirate not a pirate? Are only the pirates in red the ones I'm supposed to kill?

EDIT: you probably need a lot more than 30 points to make Cadet. The dialogue updates what you have left after each mission. So I'm an Idyut. Even the foks in the game call me "nave"..

A related question -- can you tell what makes you turn into a Mercenary. I was a Ranger, thought I was doing the Ranger thing, and now I'm a Mercenary.. Is this because I'm doing the bidding of governments for cash? A Ranger's gotta earn a living..

Excellent game. I even like the added oddness of the dodgy translation..

This game is awesome. Haven't played as anything other than a merchant and planet prober so I'll probably never be more than a cadet. If memory serves, 100 points gets you your first promotion but you have to go to a military base in order to get your stripe. You can also read about the point system there.

I got labeled mercenary too but don't know how I got it. It was probably either after accepting a mission to hunt down some guy and kill him or agreeing to destroy a pirate ship that was hunting a liner.

Good luck.

First of all I would like to thank all you bastards for the great recommendation. I have already spent too many hours on this game. In those hours, I have played 2 RTS battles, 1 very interesting text mission (in which I had to fix a DND player), and a number of turn based missions ranging from deliveries, bounties and escort missions. This game is a frickin blast!

OK, since the game is taking forever to install (I bet StarForce is to blame, but I'll assume that the game will run fine after installation), I have decided to -- drum roll, please -- READ THE MANUAL! I've gotten to the introduction, and I'm amused by the following paragraph. Is this their cute way of explaining away that the game was translated from Russian? If so, this is beautifully done.

Quote:
Future-Speak!

Space Rangers is set over 1,000 years in the future and you may find that when reading the in-game text that you come across terms or technology that you in the year 2005 are unfamiliar with. This is understandable, as even in the year 3300 there are people that do not fully appreciate why things happen! Additionally you may find that the language used, although it appears to be English, slightly odd. Again don't worry as in 2300 it was modified by the non-Earth races to make it easier for their translation software to convert.

Anyone recomend a good site for some type of Strategy Guide to print out for the beginner. The DVD box manual seems a little thin and the www.space-rangers.com site listed on the box just takes me back to the exacalibur's site. Surely there must be a user created guide out there somewhere detailing all that this game has to offer.

Does anyone know if there are any game forums set up anywhere?

How do you find out if you have the DVD drive?

I tried putting a DVD Movie in and it didn't play, so does that mean I won't be able to play it?

To play a DVD movie you also have to have software, so that didn't necessarily tell you whether you have a DVD drive or not. But I'm betting not.

Whenever I have questions about what is in my computer I turn to Belarc Advisor. Google that and see if it tells you what you want to know.

I have re-started this game several times now because I want to get a good start, and I've noticed the first few missions will be the same everytime.

But man, they want you bounty hunting way before you are ready, don't they?

..so I'll be starting again, then..

I'd had more luck getting RTS missions by talking to the governor on a planet recently freed from Dominators.

You can refuse the bounty hunting offer and go to different planets/systems to get different mission offers.

Does anyone know if there is a tutorial system of any kind on the Disc?

I have been busy with TEW2005 and have tnot had the chance to do anything with this game except install it and start it up just to make sure it worked. I s there an ingame tutorial or how about Space Rangers 1 game that is also included on the DVD?

There is a tutorial system when you start up a new game on Space Rangers 2. It's in the form of an inquiry, and the guy will have you run a couple of things to get used to the interface and how things go. Also, if you check the game's directory under the Programs Menu folder, there's a HTML file that might help just a bit more than the manual itself. Not sure about Space Rangers 1 -- haven't gotten around to installing it/playing it.

That's good to know, because so far I keep getting the same kind of mission everywhere and I just assumed that once they have you on the bounty hunter path, they are going to keep at it until you do it.

So each system is more independent than that -- I'm glad to hear it.

I can't get past a certain level in this game.. I tried starting as a Ranger and starting as a Merchant, but at a certain point the pirates take note and I'm restarting all the time.. I think I need to learn to make money quicker.

Don't go fast in the rock. Blast it open in the straightaways.

I haven't gotten a single text based mission yet. Where do these come from?

My first (and only so far) text mission came in the form of me being in jail. At least, that's what I believe it to be. I was wanted in a system, can't figure out what for -- think it was for all the attacks on pirates who just happened to be of a particular race.

Still, I gave up, got sentenced, and ended up doing a text mission acting out my jail term. Haven't really ran into any other versions yet, though, so I'd like to know too! (Anything to avoid one of the RTS missions, which I routinely get annihilated in)

How do you figure out how much fuel you have left? Or is it only used for jumping to other systems? Sorry, I am having Escape Velocity flashbacks to always running out of fuel.
