Interested in seeing Auston Matthews. Even more interested in seeing how the ridiculously fast and young Penguins do after that amazing run last year. I think we'll see a bounce back year from Calgary, maybe a top 6 finish out west. Nashville is my dark horse for the Cup.

In a reversal, the Blackhawks have a lot of defensive depth this year but question marks on offense.

And 6 rookies?

I have no idea how the Ducks will do. They have a very similar team to last year, which won the Pacific, and a better playoff coach in Carlyle--but probably a worse regular season coach.

So I guess if they get to the playoffs, great, that will make them very dangerous. But first they need to avoid the usual slow start and stay in the mix from now to April.

Also, Getzy and Perry aren't getting any younger...

Think the Ducks miss the playoffs this year. Carlyle is just an awful coach stuck in the past, by far the worst coach in the league by any advanced metric. Add in no Lindholm and Rakell for at least the first few weeks and the loss of the security blanket for Gibson, and how much better the Flames are going to be, I see 4th in the Pacific as the ceiling. Hope I'm wrong.

Looks like Eichel might have hurt himself badly although didn't catch any update, and Crosby is already out with concussion issues

First game in the new building, McDavid's first regular season game as captain and it's against the Flames.

Do the job tonight boys, don't let Calgary always have the bragging point of being the first team to win here.

Update on Eichel appears to be a high ankle sprain.

I disagree. There's still too much talent on the roster for that. They'll get there. Probably not as easy as it should be, and requiring some silly second half surge like usual (the one thing Carlyle and Boudreau have in common), but they will be there at the end of the regular season.

In other news, Toronto is still really bad.

Matt Martin and Mark Borowiecki with the first fight of the season.

Edit: Holy #%%#^#&% is Matthews good.

"Matthews scores 4 in Leafs loss" basically sums up the next few years in a single line.

Minus Mattews scores 4 is the last few years. Called a rebuild after failed short cuts. They are doing it right, and have a scary amount of talent. They finished last in 2015-16. Steady improvement, young players developing and a shit load of draft picks next season won't hurt the future.

Edmonton's new arena looks fabulous. Calgary with two consecutive short handed goals to tie it at 3 in the 2nd.

Okay, that walk-in goal by Matthews off the takeaway was some pretty slick stuff.

Jets start their season tonight. Lots of change, Pavelec is finally out, 4 rookies will be in the starting lineup. Hard to say where things will go this year, but hopefully guys like Connor and Laine can begin to fulfill their promise, and hopefully Wheeler, Scheifele, and Ehlers can pick up where they left off at the end of the year.

Oh, and hopefully something happens with that Trouba guy. Douche.

Great matchup between Toronto and Winnipeg tonight. 4-4 in OT. #1 overall pick Auston Matthews gets a breakaway but is stuffed, the puck goes the other way and #2 overall pick Patrik Laine scores to win the game and complete the first hat trick of his career.

Yeah that third period + OT was almost orgasmic for me. Laine's shot is just incredible.

Scheifele, Laine, Wheeler, Ehlers... if we can ever get our defence sorted out this team could make some noise.

Rangers are on fire. 5 straight games with 5 goals (26 total).

Their goal differential is +26, next closest is Chicago at +14.

This thread is a bit dead, but I noticed that the Blue Jackets are on fire, for maybe the first time ever.

When I look up the standings, I see that they have played 27 games, and other teams in their division have played 32.

What the fuck?

That's my question: What the fuck.

The Metro division is just insane. The Rangers have won 4 of their last 5 and have lost ground to FOUR teams in the division over that stretch.

NHL scheduling has always been bizarre. There's some legit reasons in there (for example a couple of teams have the circus use their arena for a few weeks) but in general it's just another sign of a slightly incompetent league led by an idiot. Not at all unusual to see teams who have played that many less games than the rest of the teams in their division. And probably they will get screwed by a bunch of back to backs and early games for the rest of the season to make up for it.

The Metropolitan is nuts so far. They have five teams with over 40 points while the rest of the NHL has two. Before Pitt lost tonight there were four teams with a six or more game winning streak.

The Jets just finished a stretch where they played 32 games in 60 days, which I heard was a record. I guess they will get lots of rest at some point but that is a brutal way to start the year. And not surprisingly they got hammered with injuries.

Not a fan of the new playoff format. Would be fine with a 8/9 play-in game but probably not gonna happen anytime soon.

Carolina may be the team that gets screwed by being in the Metro. They've got 37 points, went 6-2-2 over the last 10, and are still seven points behind fifth place Philadelphia, which also holds the last Wild Card. They'd be in fourth and three points out of the last Atlantic spot if they were in that division and a point out of the playoffs if they were in the West. They're 2-5-2 against the Metro so they can't be wholly absolved of their situation, but in the same vein, they're 13-6-5 against everyone else. Just their luck that the team finally seems to be getting out of the morass they've been in the last few years and wind up having the Metro turn into the most dominant division in hockey.
