FOFC Favorite Rock Act - Round 1 Group E
No upsets last group, but a couple of possibilities here, looking at the Kansas/Black Keys, Nickleback/BOC and Bob Seger/Queens of the Stone Age matchups as those that may fall into this category.
For me, Boston/Sweet was the toughest choice in this round. Boston is the epitome of a "classic rock band" and obviously More than a Feeling is generally regarded as a top 10 rock song. Sweet just has such a solid diverse body of work that is thoroughly enjoyable to me though. (Little Willie, Action, Ballroom Blitz, Fox on the Run, Love is like Oxygen, etc)

How is Radiohead vs. Billy Squier that close?

IKR. A mediocre alternative band (as if there's any other kind) vs a classic artist that actually rocked.

So, just any rock band from the 00's has zero chance to even get past the first round? Black Keys are heralded as one of the best rock bands of this generation and they are getting smoked by fucking Kansas. This tournament is clearly for the 40s/50s crowd since there is so much bias

I don't want to be a downer because I like and appreciate the older musical generations very well, my taste is wide ranging. I just want to see some fair fights. Fucking Kansas Last edited by korme : 06-29-2017 at 03:56 PM. |

Speaking only for myself, I like and appreciate the Black Keys very much, but there is absolutely nothing unique about them. They're running around in a very well worn trough. Comparatively, Kansas has been hokey and overplayed throughout eternity, but they sound like KANSAS and nobody else does. The Black Keys play their bit at a much higher level, but there's an endless pool of slightly similar sounding bands extending back nearly 40 years.

I mean, yeah the Black Keys are conscious of using blues rock and garage rock in their sounds, but I find them far more a distinctive band than Kansas, especially after the Danger Mouse collab on "Attack & Release" and they started melding the blues/garage rock with more electronic sounds.

Hey, whatever floats your boat....that was pretty much as far as I'm willing to extend myself for Kansas.

That says more about the sorry state of rock for a couple of decades than it says about TBK. Simply being "better than f'n grunge" isn't going to cut it in this tourney.

Maybe The Black Keys would get more votes if they had been quoted by Bill and Ted.

I have never heard of the Black Keys either.
But Im glad this pisses you off. Esp. after Ted Nugent and George Thorogood went down. Now I dont feel alone in my pain.

I'm glad to see Billy Squier getting some love, even if I know it's inevitable he'll go down to Radiohead (whose reverence I will never understand, but have grudgingly grown to accept). Squier has some awesome songs, but seems like he'll only be remembered for one horrible video, if at all. Touching back to the Black Keys, Billy Squier was adding synths/electronics to Zeppelin-style blues-rock 35+ years ago:

Also, even though there could be 100+ bands in this tourney that we still haven't seen, now seems as good a time as any to loudly complain that Rory Gallagher didn't make the list, because he never does. If you like the blues rock, I'd maintain it doesn't get much better, and he's pretty much just a footnote over here (I'd never even heard of him 'til I was 40). Check out the ~4:00. Unbeatable.

And just to close on Billy Squier, Piper, his band prior to going solo had some pretty decent stuff in the mid/late 70's.

The Monkees are funny in that they've taken the very unique path of being immediately considered a manufactured joke of a band which somehow served to soften the criticism against them, and raise their respect with each generation. For nearly every other band of that generation, public opinion has evolved in the opposite direction. Nowadays some of the biggest Monkees defenders are some of the most devoted music nerds. Even lots of folks who are somewhat up-to-date with music don't realize the Monkees last hit record of new music was released just 13 months ago. My personal opinion hasn't much wavered over the years...that's some pretty good pop music, but nothing particularly special.

YW, they are definitely one of those bands that should have made it much bigger than they did. Hell they opened for a who's who of arena rock back in the day. Kiss, ZZ Top, Styx, etc Here is another I wore out my 8 track player with, LOL. |

I saw the Black Keys open for someone probably 10 years ago. Never listened to an album of theirs, but the live show was pretty great - to the point where I can't remember who they opened for.

While we're complaining about voting results, I dont get how Aerosmith can handily beat The Turtles.
On one side you've got The Turtles, one of the great 60's bands with all-time classics like "Happy Together" and "Elenore". On the other you've got Aerosmith who, other than a brief period as a backing band for Run DMC, have served up a constant stream of steaming crap. Last edited by Critch : 06-29-2017 at 06:39 PM. |

There is the rub. Aerosmith was a great 70s band. That faded until they teamed up with RunDMC. And, ironically, that was the end of RunDMC and the rebirth of Aerosmith.
You listed 2 Turtles songs, but I could list a dozen Aerosmith songs that are just as good or better. But then, taste is what this is about. See Thorogood and Nugent getting knocked out.

Am I the only one that is surprised to see Motorhead and Jeff Beck in such a dog fight? Beck is an amazing guitarist, but I really thought the Godfathers of speed metal would win by 15-20 here. Very interesting matchup and though I voted for Lemmy and Co, it is cool to see Beck getting so much love.

Aerosmith made so many horrible fucking songs, and balladeered the still-fresh corpse of hard rock and heavy metal straight to the heart of the fucking sun in the '90s, that I can't give them even the slightest credit for their '70s work.

Seedings. Right now, nearly all of the top seeds are winning. There's a reason why they are the higher seeds but just like in March Madness, the matchups are inherently unfair. You would be seeking matchups like 238 vs 227. |

I voted Motorhead solely because of Lemmy, and even then because of Hawkwind more than Motorhead.

I always get the feeling that Motorhead's fandom is 95% manufactured. There seems to be a fuckton of people who deeply identify with Lemmy and/or Motorhead, got Motorhead merch, have watched documentaries about Lemmy, would go to Motorhead when they were in town.....but have never owned any motorhead records and might spend 5 minutes a month passively listening to their music. That said, who am I to say that's not real fandom, or similar bullshit. Plenty of folks like that have probably been to a dozen Motorhead shows, which is more legit appreciation than I give to anybody, it just wrinkles my nose for whatever reason.

For all my earlier talk of blues rock that plodding Albert Collins style shit typically played by Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, etc. does absolutely nothing for me.....there is some crucial tempo line that needs crossing for my enjoyment.
