You know me break outtt - Skincare thread, not Foo Fighter Appreciation
My brother and I have bad skin. My brother got a lot of bad acne and mine is starting to kick in - I use 3 different face applications nightly when I can help it and still I still get some zits here and there. It fucking blows. My face gets so oily - the catch 22 of it is that every single time I shower, I have to use face lotion afterwards because my face will get unbelievably dry, thus creating more oil to compensate. It sucks. So does anyone have any recommendations as far as acne medicine goes? What works the best? I really want to try that Proactive stuff.

Go with Proactiv.
Oh and get out in the sun more. I have acne problems even at 26, but I've noticed the acne tends to get reduced when I get outside and get sun and fresh air.

Ditto. I'd also check out a Dermatologist, they can help quite a bit. |

I've never had great acne problems. BTW when I was at the high school I often had some zits, and I found out that the best way to solve that problem is, as Balldog suggested, to go to a good Dermatologist. He can give you the best thing to your skin...
My dermatologist solved my problems and now I got a great skin. Moreover don't forget that acne and zits are generally related to hormonal activity and sometimes It is hard to solve just with lotions. Last edited by Tara : 07-05-2005 at 04:54 AM. |

I got some zits when I was in middle school or so. I quit using soap or anything else on my face. No problems since then.

Bah. Let the skin be dry. I used to scrub the hell out of my face, then splash on a ton of aftershave - the alcohol basically burns the pores away.

Accutane. (Of course, you might throw yourself off a cliff from taking it, or your kids may look like donkeys. Allegedly.) |

When I was back in college I had one terrible episode of acne - I switched from a deoderant soap (Zest, I think) to pure soap (Ivory), which seemed to help.

Go to a dermatoligist and don't be concerned about using face lotion. If you didn't use it your face would create that much more natural oils and you'd end up in worse shape - trust me. I've used Cetaphil moisturizing lotion for a long time. It's in a big, green bottle. Note that you don't need to use so much of it either (it lasts a long time). I still get the occasional zit here and there, but don't really have the acne problem I had in early high school. I've basically been following the same pattern my sister went through (she's 3 years my senior). I went to a dermatoligist and was put on a pill form of Sulfa and also applied some sort of topical cream to my face, the name of the cream escapes me right now. So if you've got a serious enough problem where your thinking about it each day, go to a dermatologist. Unlike some of us at FOFC, they'll know what some of the latest remedies are. |

I get zits sometimes, and have a lot of blackheads on my nose... but I haven't really bothered to do anything about it yet aside from washing my face with Clearasil. I'm a stressful person, so I'm 99% sure that's what causes it for me.
However, my sister didn't like the acne she had and started using Proactiv a couple months ago. Big difference. I'd recommend that, since a bunch of other stuff she tried didn't work. |

Glad to hear about the Proactiv stuff. I've also considered using that, since my face is pretty break-out prone (it doesn't help that I have skin allergies to most things though).
Thanks for starting the thread, Shorty. /tk

I was prescribed antibiotics once for a moderate case of acne when I was in grad school. It worked, but I would hardly recommend it--with all the cases of drug resistance you hear about nowadays, I would save the antibiotics for something more important than acne.
That said, I switched to a daily cleanser with glycolic acid, occasional exfoliant, and a sulfuric cream for emergency breakout treatment--this has worked for me ever since... |

Screw proactiv. A little man cream rubbed in the T-zone does wonders for mind, body AND soul.
