FOF- The Card Game

I'm thinking about buying and wanted to get opinions of purchasers.
I admit I don't own FOF the computer game. While I like the depth and sophistication of the engine, the appearance always left me short.
If you've bought the card game let me know your thoughts. It looks interesting and as a game designer myself I'm always curious of the competition.

thanks

He released the card game. Check his website. He's selling it at cost.

You know what, despite that it doesn't look marketable and sounds like he won't make any money on the sales, I think it's cool that Jim managed to get it into a state that it's at least out there.

Wow, good to see he published it anyways without the kickstarter. Reading parts of the manual it would take a bit to get into the flow of a game quickly but I might just pick it up. Plus make a ios port async!

Agreed, I thought this was DOA. It really looks like an awesome game if you have like-minded company and some time to kill.

Thanks for the link, I didn't know about it. But, I have been in a drug induced daze for the past month.

I am getting it. Board games and card games are not my usual thing, but I am just too interested in his coaching vs coaching concept not to try it. Plus, it gives my brother and I something to do against each other.

Well, took the 88 dollar (with shipping) plunge and purchased it. Since I have my first copy of FOF1, it seemed wrong not to get this. Will try it out in wars with my coaching brother, maybe we can start a Thanksgiving/Christmas tradition in battling it out for the coveted last piece of chocolate pie.
Someday, maybe even my son will find it on a rainy day and say, hey dad, what's this? Whatever the case, not sure how many here purchased it, but to complete the suite, it should be on it's way. Enjoy your 14 cent profit, Jim. I wish I had talent to do something like this.

Eager to hear what you think Senator. I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but I literally have no one I could play against

Ok, so the game has been in my hands, and I will say, it has a cool factor to it that I really like. It is definitely a niche product. It is a bit setup like strat but instead of individual player cards, the cards are plays from your playbook. All teams are represented.

What I like so far - in the early stages is the coach centric feeling you get. I love a game that is a coaching simulator. This is missing from the PC game. This feels like you are making strategic calls that are the basis for success and captures, in my coaching experience, a real sense of the real time feelings associated with the game. I am going to Galveston next week, and expect my coaching brother and I to have a few cold ones and go toe to toe many times as we relax next to the ocean.
In a time where it is easier, and visually more fun, to play a PC game or PS3 game, I can see this as a way my son, nephews, and brother can play to engage in competition with each other without my lack of twitch muscles being the difference.
I can also see this being a game my son and I especially will play over the years to just interact and hang with each other and the game of football we enjoy as its glue.
Sometimes, since he is so young, we play Sorry or CandyLand, and we interact and laugh so much more than when we play Madden, which we enjoy or other video games against each other. Not sure why this is, but it's there.
I have just scratched the surface, but so far, very glad I have this, if nothing than to experience the vision Jim had, and which he put so much effort into.

I just bought it too. Why not? Ships on April 1 though. Wish it came sooner! Like you Senator, I can see this being a fun game to play with family. When I lived closer to my dad we used to be able to knock out seasons in different text games, but it is a bit harder to do that now. I think a board game like this would be a great way to pass the time and like you said it is a real collector's item.

Can't wait!

When I received it in the mail, I had that same feeling I got when I purchased Strat a long time ago. All the guts are well made, there is not a "cheap" feel to any of it, which was a relief. Solid.

I will have to pick this up. I bought APBA football a number of years ago and had a lot of fun playing a co-worker. Because it uses now former nfl players, it would be harder to get into.

This looks too good to pass up. Somehow I missed the original announcement. Now I gotta decide whether or not to drop 80 bucks on it. That's quite a commitment.

I may end up picking it up. My dad and I used to play Paydirt! a ton back in the day. This seems like it'd be a bit more in-depth than just rolling dice with 8 different play calls, but should be doable.

Received in the mail today. Looking forward to playing it with my father tomorrow. I am already thinking of some house rules unfortunately. I wish I had taken a closer look at the instructions online.

For instance, there is only one possession for each team per quarter. Offhand, I don't like that. I would say since most teams run around 70 plays per game to have maybe around a 35 play limit per quarter. Of course, that doesn't factor in things like the time difference between running plays, incomplete passes etc.

Another house rule I am thinking of is to allow the offense to call the same play as often as they want. From the instructions in the game it looks like offensive plays go in the discard pile after used, but that doesnt seem realistic to me.

Of course, I haven't played the game yet so maybe these ideas wouldn't work.

Senator, did you institute any house rules or did you play the game as is?

Finally played the game!

I have to say the mechanism that Jim created as to how the dice and offense and defense cards all work together is quite remarkable. There definitely was a bit of a learning curve (the directions could stand a rewrite IMHO) but once I understood the flow of how the game worked, I was able to get results quickly and easily.

Also, and I can't stress how important this is. You can look at a card at a glance and know if it is a card that is effective or not. It made me think of the APBA days, when I could cover up the player's name but look at the numbers on hsi card and I could immediately tell if he was good or not. Jim definitely captured that feeling, which isn't easy.

The way the game is supposed to be played is that each player builds a deck and from that deck you draw a hand of 8 cards. However, there are certain cards that are just money plays. Green Bay has this one pass play for instance that is basically unstoppable. Given how the game is supposed to be played, this card wouldn't be a show stopper because you would only have access to it maybe once or twice a game.

However, I prefer a game where I have access to all my offensive cards at once and based on what the defense does, I do well or I don't. So the way I am going to play the game is take out all the money plays, have each team pick out 20 plays or so on offense around ten plays or so on defense and just play with that deck the whole game. I feel like it works better that way.

I am glad I got the game. It does involve a lot of setup (the game came with all the cards unorganized unfortunately). But I do think there is a payoff at the end. So far I have tweaked the playbook settings and the way quarters work. With these tweaks, I think this plays a great game of football.

Got the game today. Disappointed separating all the cards to where they should be. Get that done start thinking it really time to get into this. Drew cards, rolled some dice and paused scratched head and paused some more. I think overall the directions could be better written out. I think I figured out how to run the ball, passing I'm not to sure. I am assuming you need that play tree? If true would have been nice to have the tree on the board. I started over reading all of it and that just confused me more. Someone needs to do a YouTube video.
