Luis Gómez Reaches 200 Wins
Monday, September 14th, 2043: His goal at twenty was to win twenty games one year, pitch until he was thirty, win the league pennant and to make some money. Well, Luis Gómez did something even better -- the 37-year-old Spring Lions star has now won 200 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers.

He joined that exclusive club today at Morales Field by whipping the Portland Axemen 10-4, holding them to 12 hits in 8.1 innings while chalking up 5 strikeouts and no walks.

In the postgame interview, the modest Gómez said, "It's special to win 200 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back."

In his career Gómez has notched 200 wins and 160 losses and compiled a 4.33 ERA.

Final Day of the season, Stafford has clinched a playoff spot as has new York.

The only thing left to decide is which team will have homefield advantage in the RLCS. Spring has lost 7 of their last 10, and New York has lost 6 of their last 10. With both teams backing into the playoffs they remain tied going into the last game:

Spring 92-69
New York 92-69

Spring plays @ Cleveland
New York plays @ Maricopa

Spring 8, Cleveland 1

New York and Spring remain tied after the last game of the season. They now will face each other in one more game to determine which team has homefield advantage in the RLCS.

As Spring led the regular season series 12-11 vs New York, they'll host this deciding game prior to the playoffs.

Havana records the third best record in CL regular season history and becomes the only team other than the Boston Resettlers (now Plantana) to record more than 110 wins in a season within the CL!

Of course as we saw last season, winning 110 games in the regular season has not historically meant much in the postseason!

Considering the fanfare he got earlier today, I find it immensely amusing that Ayala won the Take The Money and Run award.

Da bum.

Still, he still probably pitched far better than my not-ready-for-prime-time alternatives.

This has been a problem from the get go in this league. Alan said he would look into it in the near future. Its hopefully going to get better. We all feel your pain.

That's happened to me twice that I can immediately recall. Both players were youngish, about 30, and had just signed extensions. One was a pitcher at the very start of his extension, while the other was a power hitting 1B.

It sucks, but I have learned to roll with that. As far as I know, it can happen to any of us, but clearly with randomness at a low, it's pretty rare (thankfully).

Heh, heh... when I said that, I really believed it. A combination of good fortune, a couple good signings, and a stretch of down years for much of the CL has kept me ont op.

I made that doomsday pronouncement about five seasons ago, I believe, when my main stars were SP Jose Fernandez, CF Angel Castillo, 1B Jeff Savard, 2B Michael Peppers, C Matt "Splits" Hall and SS Simon Laroque. All of these players were 30-plus and coming to the end of lucrative contracts. I knew they would ask for too much considering they were all likely to begin to decline, and my system was relatively barren.

Behind that group of stars was OF Felix Medina and 3B Arturo Caro, who were just coming up and starting to approach their potential talents. SP Carlos Galindo was solid but inconsistent and under his ratings, like most pitchers. Vet signing Wickerson Layar was an inconsistent pitcher, and Tamasaki Yamaguchi, like other pitchers in this league, was a young pitcher who couldn't seem to develop any further.

Move up a few years. Castillo leaves via free agency first. Fernandez and Savard go bad and retire. Peppers, Laroque and Hall reach their walk years at ages 33-35 and ask for too much to stay on; I let them go. Even with Medina and Caro under long term club control, two good hitters can't carry a team, so this is when Havana shoulda sunk into oblivion.

But I got lucky. Galindo's ratings improved, and now he's the current Mauro Morales winner in the CL, and a heavy favorite for this year's, too. Layar suddenly ifugred it out and started pitching consistently better. And Yamaguchi finally developed. I signed Hector Sanchez, former closer deluxe, to try his hand at SP (i.e. cheap starter), and he has done well. Medina and Caro anchor an opportunistic lineup that has a sprkling of guys who are good at one thing (CON) or the other (POW) for the most part.

So that's how I did it--I got lucky. Hopefully I can keep it up. I was very surprised the past couple seasons to continue to contend.

Been there to many times kenjabroni. Nothing worse than signing someone (extension or FA) and their ratings take a dump. I have the same with my veteran OF Medina. I'm paying him 8+ mil a year to sit on the bench

Good luck to the playoff teams. Awesome regular season Sluggers - which usually means doom for the postseason.

For my Naps - I better have one hell of a squad in 2-3 yrs with all these top picks... losing 90+ games is getting old

So the Wolverines improved from 72-90 in 2042, my first season here, to an even 81-81 in 2043. That probably doesn't mean much, but I see one immediate benefit: a couple of guys who would not talk extension with me before the season will now.

I'm not sure we can reach agreement, nor even if I want to extend. But at least they're willing to talk, and I guess its due to being a .500 team.

For kicks the Wolverines brass asked Ayala's agent (name of Boras, I think) about an extension. Mr. Take the Money and Run is seeking a 7-year deal of $94.2M, which comes to $13.4M per season.

I'm guessing this might be a quick exit tomorrow for the mighty Lions. Our rotation just plain sucks.

On another note, I didn't realize, but last year our long time owner passed away, leaving his son to run the team. This is the 3rd generation of the same family to own the team. I kinda like this aspect of OOTP, but I wish they'd get the Jr naming issue worked out.

I wouldn't worry. I think basic addition and subtraction skills is second or third grade stuff.

I'm really hoping that I see Alan post later this morning that Júlio Castro (7.7 mil next year) and Pedro 'Banjo' Medina (8.9 mil for the next 2 years) announce their retirement. Both really took rating hit after they turned 32. That will free up a lot of FA $$$ so I can overpay on some other aging veteran

At 32 I'd say that odds are not in your favor.
