I think most of you are familiar with the game. If not, here is what happens:

Your goal is to guess the 5 letter word.
Only everyday 5 letter words are used. You start, given only the first letter, by guessing a 5 letter word. Any words that are in common with the key word are highlighted. Letters in the correct position are differentiated from letters that are in common but in the wrong position. A sample round might consist go like this:

T - - - -

player guesses TRADE

[T](R)AD(E)

[] will indicate letters in the correct position.
() on this board will mean letter exists, but in wrong position.

player guesses TONER

[T]ON[E][R]

player guesses TILER

[T][i]L[E][R]

player guesses TIMER

[T][i][M][E][R]

which is correct.

This is how the game works. For our FOFC message board game, we will let anyone guess a word. The first valid 5-letter word will be accepted as a turn (for simplicity's sake--edited posts will have to be ignored, so get it right the first time). If the player gets the word right, they are the word-maker for the next turn and posts the first letter. (They also get a point!) If they don't the word-maker will show which letters are in common and which are in the right place. The game ends when

This is a variation of a game we used to play on Michigan's internal forum system (called MEET:Students) back in 1990. We called it Word Mastermind.

The difference was the words could be any length, we didn't give a starting letter and, instead of telling you which specific letters were correct, we just gave a number count.

For example, if the hidden word was CLOWN, and you guessed CRONE, you'd receive a score of 2,1 (2 right for the C and the O and 1 right but in the wrong position for the N).

So, for my word, we're going to play it this way.
