OOTP Re-Writes History

My other computer is currently replaying the 106 sesaons of MLB history.

It started last night at 11:15 and is still churning, making almanacs and the like. The Anti-Virus kicked on at 8 and turned a season being done in ten minutes to a season in 20. It was doing '76 an hour ago.

I did a 95 year run yesterday, but I'll explain later why I didn't like it.

For historical folks, what would you like to know?

(I'll give you my settings after I eat.)

The first sim:

1901-1995: Ultimate draft, full 2006 financials, ammy draft every November. Re-calc every season.

Best hitter: Ted Williams, 728 HR, 3992 hits, 1936-1961 Giants, Red Sox

Best Pitcher: Warren Spahn, 370+ wins for a variety of teams.

No real dynasties, Cleveland won 15 WS, and dominated the late 70's and 80's with John Candeleria as the ace.

Numbers seem low. Babe and Aaron had low 600+ HR. No one over 4000 hits. No one stole 100+ bases a season.

Good variability. Mays and Brock CEI early. Koufax pitches until '78, all time K leader and over 300 wins, all with the A's (55-78).

Washington has the cruel irony award, they won titles in '60 and '71 only to see the franchise move.

The expansion Senators won it all in seven seasons, (1967).

The Yankees blow. The Cubs won a title in '76.

McGwire and Bonds were on the way for massive careers, Mac at 450 homers after 10 seasons, easily would have smashed Williams 728.

Simmed it in about 5 hours, went to do the almanac and despite taking forever to do the history part, it did not make any pages for retired players. They were listed in leaderboards, team registers and the like, but there was no way to read each career on an individual basis, very frustrating.

So, started again with the all-nighter. Box scores, game logs, html for everything.

Speeding along to '84, killed the anti-virus.

What kind of things are you looking for?

(Scott Pose, hah!)

Dwight Gooden, Daryl Strawberry?

I am always curious to see how guys work out whose careers were cut short based on injury or other outside reasons.

Thurman Munson is another that comes to mind.

The almanac interface needs to be redone. You get absolutely no team history, that I can find, done by default.

Up to '85 now.

Also, how about the mediocre El Pasoans who made it to MLB in real life, did they far any better in OOTP?

Rocky Coppinger
Butch Henry
Frank Castillo
Bruce Ruffin
Omar Quintanilla
Alan Zinter
Andy Cohen
Mark Grudzielanek
Mike Maddux (played for UTEP short-lived baseball program)

Going through the Almanacs, despite the re-calcs, there are some surprises.

I still haven't found Babe Ruth yet. Cobb suffers injuries for the Cubs.

Koufax pitches til '73 but was never incredible.

Ripken, thru '86, has never played more than 151 games in a season with the Cardinals.

He is, however, an excellent shortstop.

He ripped his shoulder in '72. When I run the history report at the end, I will pin him down further.

It's taking longer to run the almanacs than the seasons themselves, just into 1990.

Strawberry and Ken Phelps are studs.

Babe Ruth was released by the Yankees in 1914, playing half a year. That's it.

I'm going to run one final almanac then start working on your requests.

I think the "what if" gamer will be mightily impressed by replaying history.

I think he's married to Susan Sarandon.

The thing that stood out to me in that almanac posting was Jose Canseco's 151 steal attempts over his 20+ year career. Now, that's something else.

Here's one for you vtbub -- any teams pulling off a worst-to-first turnaround ala the Braves (and IIRC, the Twins)?

And just for fun, another player -- Brad Komminsk.

The fact that Canseco made the HOFs astounding.

I know that people are no longer praising batting average like they did in the past, but wow. After a quick glance, it appears that Canseco had the lowest batting average of every player in that HoF there. I guess it's all the home runs that put him there. I can't imagine what else it would be.
