1. Why not just schedule a ninth and tenth game randomly among the teams and say those two extra games(the third match up for teams) are at neutral sites?

2. I say let the seedings stay. Don't worry about the what-ifs of seeding when you have 128 teams. It complicates things.

However, if you WANT to avoid those things, something I did in my NCAA dynasty selection process was to color code alike teams in an Excel file so that I could easily see where they shouldn't match up. You can try that out if you want to separate same-bracket and same-conference teams.

Oops- I totally missed this the first time around.

Add a Div 2 team to Group 58- no need to make it harder on yourself. Or go with StLee's idea of 2 extra random games. Gotta get them up to 10 games somehow.

For #2- depends on what you like. Personally, I like trying to make a bracket so I enjoy the part where I try to meet all the rules. However, if it's getting to be a grind and you're more interested in results, go with the seedings as is. As a reader, I'm cool with either- this should be more about what you want to do as author.

thanks for all the comments, especially SI. Good to have you on board StLee, appreciate the comments.

For the first part of my questions, the problem with adding a D2 team is the what if sports simulator only includes D1 teams. I could always use one of those teams and call it a D2 team, but I don't think that would be very realistic. Probably what I'm going to have to do is just schedule 2 random games extra for each team in group 58. The schedule won't be balanced, but its the only way I can think of.

As for the second part of the question, I do know that it was a grind just changing the groups around initially so that there wasn't more than 1 team from the same conference per group. That took some time. Probably what I'll do is leave the seedings alone, unless there is a situation in which I have teams tied and need to use a tiebreaker. Then if I can use it to my advantage to switch teams around that otherwise would have created matchups between conference teams or teams from the same group, I will do so. Otherwise I'll just leave things alone, as it will be A LOT easier.

Northwestern St. split with SE Missouri St., but has a considerably better point differential. They should be able to get a fairly high seed as far as group runner ups go. SE Missouri St. is still in great shape in the wildcard hunt, with the 7-3 record. Unfortunately, that does eliminate our last 5-5 third place team. Georgia Tech is officially eliminated, and now to even have a chance at a wildcard berth, teams that finish third place in their group MUST have at least a 6-4 record in their group. I'm thinking of changing it to show only the 12 teams that are currently in the lead for wildcard berths. Cal St. Fullerton wins the group and will probably be a top 35 seed. Another Cinderella team that is just happy to be here. I would guess somewhere between 25 and 35. UCLA finishes second, and could be one of the higher seeds of the group runner ups. The point differential isn't terrible for a 7-3 team. LSU gets third place over Marshall due to tiebreakers. They split their meetings, but LSU has a much better point differential. So LSU gets third and is safely in the wildcard hunt at the moment. This does eliminated Austin Peay, and puts North Florida next on the chopping block. Marshall needed to really, really win big or have LSU or UCLA get blown out. Didn't happen, but good run by them anyways. Southern was hugely disappointing. Here are the wildcard standings through group 30: (over halfway done with group play, woo-hoo!)

I'm trying to remember. Have we had any groups where the winning team goes 10-0 and the second place team goes 8-2? I can't think of any but it's been 30 groups. Whatif seems to really randomize things a bit more than I think they are.

I went and looked at my charts, and it looks like group 2 is the only group that had a 10-0 winner (Duke) and an 8-2 runner up. But the runner up was actually Cal St. Northridge.

WIS is a great sim, there is a lot of randomness to it, which I like, but for the most part, the dominant teams are going to win the majority of their games against lesser teams.

I really like seeing all the teams that are in the elimination standings, too. It will also give the newly minted third-place teams that are already eliminated a good comparison point of how short they came.

So please leave ALL eliminated third-place teams in the standings.

Oops. I messed up my multi-quote. Anyway, I suggested adding a third game because of the problems I had with my football dynasty of trying to find substitute teams for the Division I-AA teams whatifsports won't display. My work around was to roll some dice and then find some similar historical teams to substitute, but I felt it was cheap and skewed the actual teams' results.

Not much to talk about in this one. Fresno St. and Lasalle are moving on to the round of 128, and every other team is eliminated. All Fresno St. has to do is win, or get a LaSalle loss. If LaSalle wins and Fresno St. loses, then we have a tiebreaker to tend to.

Both Fresno St. and LaSalle lose in Week 10, hurting their seeds. Fresno St. backs into the group 31 title, but the 7-3 record should have them towards the bottom of the group winners. LaSalle isn't quite as bad off, as their point differential puts them near the top of the group runner ups with 6-4 record, but there are a few teams ahead of them. N. Colorado takes third due to the tiebreaker, and I'll be honest here, since all 3 of the teams were eliminated, I skipped head to head and went straight to point differential. Had a wildcard berth been in the possibility for any of the teams, I would have went head to head first. As it stands, the 5-5 record isn't enough and N. Colorado is eliminated. So Notre Dame wins the group easily, finishing undefeated, but their point differential is a tad low compared to the other undefeated teams. There are a few teams lower, but they should still be in line for a top 10-15 seed. James Madison gets the tiebreaker over Penn St. I did do head to head in this one and they split, so James Madison gets second place due to point differential. Good news, bad news for Penn St. Their 6-4 record and +10 point differential is enough to keep them in the wildcard chase.. but barely. N. Florida, who was on the chopping block, came in with a record of 6-4 and a point differential of +9, so by 1 point, Penn St. eliminates N. Florida. Colorado St. rolled through this group, so much so that their point differential is by far the highest of the 9-1 group winners, and even higher than some teams that went undefeated in group play. They would easily be looking at a top 10 seed in the round of 128 if not for that 1 loss. I still think they are in great position to be a top 20-25 seed. Harvard lost their last 2 and backed their way into the round of 128, where their seed really will take a hit. One thing I forgot to mention in my last post is that GA Southern had a chance to take third place if they won and Seton Hall lost. That's exactly what happened. Unfortunately for them, that point differential gets them nowhere near a wildcard berth, so GA Southern is officially eliminated from this tournament. Penn St., which breathes another sigh of relief (they blew one last group by edging out N. Florida for the potential last wildcard spot). But this time they didn't have to sweat it out quite as much, and they see their round of 128 hopes last at least 1 more week. Here are the updated wildcard standings:

UNLV wins the group thanks to their win over UCF, but they also got help from C. Arkansas and their loss. The Rebels have almost as good a point differential than Group 33 winner Colorado St. If I had to guess, I would say that UNLV will be just a seed or 2 lower than their MWC counterparts. C. Arkansas is one of the rare 7-3 group winners, so their seed will be fairly high as far as group runner ups go, but their point differential isn't as strong as others. The good news for UCF is that their point differential is by far the best of the 5-5 third place teams. The bad news is that you now must have a 6-4 record to even be considered for a wildcard berth. They will gain a few seeds by being the best 8-2 group winner as far as point differential goes. E. Carolina has one of the top point differentials as far as a 7-3 group runner up goes. They could be a seed between 60-70. Seattle swept Elon, so they get the third spot. But that 5-5 record isn't enough to get them in wildcard contention, so they are eliminated. But they leave on a high note, winning 5 of their last 6, including a win over group winner Iowa St. This after an 0-4 start which saw them absolutely hammered in 2 of their first 3 games. I enjoy these down bracket groups that are headlined by weak NCAA or strong NIT teams and we get closer and closer in talent level. We have yet to really see a big cluster at the top of a series that I can remember and I'm hoping to see one at some point. However, it may be that even tho the talent level at 1-2 is getting lower, it's hard for 3-4 to reach up there

SI, I think your theory may be right. I think there will be a major difference between the 1st/2nd place teams and the 3rd place team in several of the groups. I could be wrong, I'm interested to see how it plays out. WIS seems to like occasional upsets, so anything can happen.

Pretty simple for Morehead St.: they win and they clinch the group. A loss combined with an FGCU win forces a tiebreaker for the group title. (Here's a little bit of drama for you at least SI). There is some wildcard drama as Charlotte has a chance! A slight chance, they must beat FGCU by 20 or more (Penn St. is on the chopping block with a 6-4 (+10) mark) to stay alive. No easy task. The only drama in this group came with the bottom 3 teams needing a tiebreaker. Knowing that none of those teams were moving on, I basically just used point differential as tiebreaker. Not a big deal, as they were all 2-2 against each other anyways, so point differential would have been the tiebreaker anyways. As far as the top 3 teams, Morehead St. backs into the group title since both they and FGCU lost. This is a group winner that certainly doesn't strike fear into many teams, as they'll be at the bottom of the group winners. FGCU, who was expected to win this group, falls short, but they should still see a top 75 seed. And we come to Charlotte, who got the win they needed, but not by enough. Their even point differential with the 6-4 record means they will go home, and Penn St. can dance for at least another group. Here are the updated wildcard standings:
