Round of 128

#124 Green Bay vs. #5 Gonzaga

My Prediction

Gonzaga should win this one fairly handily.

Game Result

Gonzaga- 84, Green Bay- 63

No problem for the Zags in this one, as they get 26 points and 11 rebounds from Elias Harris.

#69 East Carolina vs. #60 South Dakota St.

My Prediction

I like East Carolina in this one.

Game Result

East Carolina- 87, South Dakota St.- 78

Miguel Paul exploded for E. Carolina, as he had 27 points and 8 assists.

Round of 128

#101 UTEP vs. 28 Akron

My Prediction

I'm going out on a limb here and picking UTEP to upset Akron.

Game Result

Akron- 81, UTEP- 64

So my prediction was way off, but I'm impressed by the superb free throw shooting in this one. Akron shot 95.5% from the line, and UTEP was 85% from the line. Impressive!

Round of 128

#92 North Dakota vs. #37 Iowa St.

My Prediction

Iowa St. should get this one fairly easy.

Game Result

Iowa St.- 63, North Dakota- 61

Much, much closer than I expected. Had North Dakota shot better than 56% from the line, they might have gotten the upset.

Round of 128

#117 North Carolina Central vs. #12 Colorado St.

My Prediction

N.C. Central got the top wildcard spot in convincing fashion, but Colorado St. is tough. I think it'll be a good game for a while, but Colorado St. gets the W.

Game Result

Colorado St.- 82, N.C. Central- 68

A huge rebounding advantage in this one as Colorado St. controlled the boards 41-29 and had 2 guys with double figure rebounding.

Round of 128

#76 Providence vs. #53 Ole Miss

My Prediction

Marshall Henderson pisses off the Providence fans multiple times during the game.. and oh yea, Ole Miss wins.

Game Result

Ole Miss- 66, Providence- 57

While Henderson was relatively quiet this game (only 12 points), the Ole Miss defense was outstanding, holding Providence to 31.3% shooting.

#108 Xavier vs. #21 Pittsburgh

My Prediction

Part of me is wanting to pick Xavier to win this game. Despite the seedings, I honestly see this as a toss-up game. I'm gonna pick Pitt, but it could go either way.

Game Result

Pittsburgh- 71, Xavier- 62

Second chance points won this game for Pitt. Of their 41 rebounds, 17 were offensive, which equated to 15 extra shots over Xavier.

Round of 128

#85 Evansville vs. #44 Butler

My Prediction

Can't see Butler losing this one. Evansville is a team on the rise, but they aren't there yet.

Game Result

Outstanding effort from Evansville in this one, as they led by 8 at the under-4 timeout. Unfortunately they couldn't hold that lead, and Butler got it done in OT.

We are now halfway done with the round of 128. What is everybodys thoughts and opinions? Personally, I'm a little bummed to see 2 Kansas teams already out of the tournament, but there have been some really exciting games!

Too late now but I'm thinking of possible changes for next time. Set up some sort of "pod" system like group play where you can swing at 4 or 8 games at once. However, you emphasize the close or upset couple of games with a paragraph or something and just one line the rest. That way we have something that jumps out. It's looking like a wall of text right now.

SI, there is a long way to go in the tournament, I am ok with changing things up. Could you private message me some examples so that I can completely understand what you're saying? I do like your ideas, and I will be asking for your opinions on my next project (which I am already planning out), since you've been such a loyal reader on this one. If you could, private message me, thanks.

With some suggestions from sterlingice (much appreciated), and an answer from whatifsports on my question, there will be a change in format for the rest of the tournament. The tournament will now be broken down into 8 pods. Every round will have a game of the pod, until I get down to the sweet 16 (or the final 32), haven't decided yet. At which time I will do a story type report on every game. Until then, the game of the pod will be a story type (paragraph or 2 report), while the other games in that pod for that round will just be a quick sentence summary with the final scores.

Round of 128- Pod 5

Game of the Pod
#111 New Mexico vs. #18 Michigan St.

New Mexico came into this WIS tournament as the 12th ranked team in the nation, but needed a tiebreaker just to get second place in their group and get into the round of 128. They are looking to redeem themselves with a good performance in this one. Michigan St. ran through their group, their only loss in group play being a 5 point loss to Eastern Michigan, who also is in the round of 128.

The first half was sensational, featuring 15 lead changes in 20 minutes of action. Michigan St. got it stretch out to a 6 point lead with about a minute to go in the half, and led 29-26 at halftime. The second half looked like a runaway for the Spartans, as Keith Appling hit 2 free throws to give Michigan St. a 46-35 lead at about the 10 minute mark. Then New Mexico stepped up their defense. One man in particular did the damage: Jamal Fenton, who had 5 steals for the game and had 3 steals in a row on back to back to back Spartan possessions. Going into the last tv timeout, a Chad Adams three pointer gave New Mexico their first lead of the second half. But the last 3:30 of the game for New Mexico resembled how they played in group play, as they had 7 turnovers in that timeframe and were outscored 13-4. Michigan St. gets the win and New Mexico goes out with nary a whimper, just like they did in the actual 2013 NCAA tournament.

Final Score

#18 Michigan St.- 70
#111 New Mexico- 64

Other Pod Games

#2 Ohio St.- 76
#127 Cincinnati- 66

#66 Louisville- 57
#63 Baylor- 47

#31 Arizona St.- 73
#98 Harvard- 57

#95 LaSalle- 73
#34 Rutgers- 70

This would have been the game of the pod if not for the Michigan St.-New Mexico game.

#15 Indiana- 84
#114 St. Bonaventure- 67

#79 Villanova- 66
#50 Illinois- 57

#47 Colorado- 61
#82 USC- 52

Stars of the Pod

* Ramon Galloway from LaSalle had 12 points, 5 boards, and 5 assists in the win over Rutgers.

* Mouphtaou Yarou of from Villanova had a double double: 14 points, 12 boards and made all 8 of his free throws in the win over Illinois.

* Gary Harris of Michigan St. had 25 points and was 9-13 from the floor in the win over New Mexico.

On a side note, I have decided not to do a recap for the other pod games, simply to save a little bit of time. However, if you guys want to see a sentence recap for the other pod games, I can do so. Or I may just pick out a game or 2 that has a major key stat that jumps out at me. What do you guys think there?

I like the tweaked format (duh) but I realize it's harder to sit down and find time for 8 games as opposed to 1 or a couple. BTW, I haven't had time to check out your new PM. I want to take some time to respond and that won't happen at lunch on a weekday

Round of 128- Pod 6

Game of the Pod
#122 Texas vs. #7 Michigan

If you are predicting this game based on the results of the actual 2012-2013 NCAA season, you'd predict a mismatch. Michigan was the runner-up to national champions Louisville, while Texas was so bad that they became the first Big 12 team to participate in the College Basketball Invitational, of which they lost their first round game. But, these games are played through What If Sports, and anything can happen...

Michigan looked as if they would run away with it, as they jumped to a 9 point lead early, thanks to some stellar passing from Trey Burke. He ended up having 4 assists for the game, but 3 of them came within the first 5 minutes. Texas came storming back though, and took their biggest lead of the half, 31-25, on a jumper by Javan Felix. The Longhorns took a 3 point lead into the locker room. They extended that lead in the second half, building up to a 10 point lead going into the 8 minute media time out. But Michigan wasn't done. They kept getting to the free throw line, and when Nik Stauskas hit 2 free throws to cut the lead to 3 with just over 3 minutes to go, it looked like Texas was going to lose their composure. However, the Wolverines missed their last 8 attempts from the field, their only other points coming on a Mitch McGary dunk. Texas kept them in the game by missing 6 of their last 7 free throws, but it wasn't enough, as Michigan couldn't buy a point in the last 2 and a half minutes and the Longhorns pull the upset...

Final Score

#122 Texas- 63
#7 Michigan- 59

Other Pod Games

#10 Duke- 76

#74 Northwestern St.- 74
#55 Oral Roberts- 57

#23 Florida- 69
#106 Loyola Marymount- 67

Finally a higher seed wins out of this group!

#42 North Carolina- 73
#87 New Mexico St.- 64

Stars of the Pod

* Connor Hill from Idaho had 22 points including 6 of 9 on three point attempts in the win against Utah.

* Richard Howell from N.C. State had 18 points and 13 boards in the loss to Youngstown St.

* James Michael McAdoo from North Carolina had 16 points and 10 boards in the win over New Mexico St.

Round of 128- Pod 7

Game of the Pod
#78 UCLA vs. #51 Marquette

A great battle here between 2 teams that have a LOT of history in the NCAA tournament. Who can forget one of the legendary coaches in the game, UCLA's John Wooden. Marquette had one heck of a coach too in Al McGuire, who led them to their only national title in 1977. As for this tournament, both teams finished 7-3 in group play. However, both teams are good enough to make a long run in this tournament. So let's get to the action..

Defense was the key to the first half, as Marquette shot just 21.5% in the first half. UCLA wasn't much better, at 24%. UCLA led 26-21 at halftime. The second half saw neither team get a lead of more than 5 points, but in the last 15 seconds of the game Kyle Anderson took over for the Bruins. First he hit a jumper in the left corner with 15 seconds left to cut Marquette's lead to 57-56. Marquette made 1 of 2 free throws to take a 2 point lead. With 5 seconds left, Anderson hit a jumper from the top of the key. Then with 1 second on the clock, he got a steal. UCLA got a quick timeout, and on the inbounds, Larry Drew popped open and hit a jumper at the buzzer to end a thrilling game and send UCLA into the round of 64.

Final Score

#78 UCLA- 60
#51 Marquette- 58

Stars of the Pod

* Kyle Anderson of UCLA had 17 points, 13 boards, 5 assists, and 1 big steal at the end of the game in the win over Marquette.

* Devon Collier from Oregon St. had 22 points, 6 boards, and 3 blocks in the win over SMU.

* Khalif Wyatt of Temple had 26 points, and his teammate Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson had 11 points and 15 boards in the win over Creighton

Round of 64- Pod 1

Game of the Pod
#48 Oklahoma vs. #17 St. Marys

St. Marys is known for their fierce rivalry with Gonzaga in the WCC, while Oklahoma was at one point a powerhouse in the Big 12. Who can forget Billy Tubbs, the legendary OU coach, who received a technical foul in a 1989 game against Mizzou when he grabbed the mic to address the fans and said "No matter how bad the officiating is, please don't throw things on the floor." Little known fact (to most people probably): Ed Hightower, legendary basketball official who is retiring at the end of the 2013-2014 season, is the official that t'd up ole Billy. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail in this round of 64 game.

At one point it looked like it could be over by halftime. For every bucket that Oklahoma hit, St. Marys countered with a 3 pointer, eventually building the lead up to 12. Matthew Dellavedova had the hot hand early on for St. Marys, scoring 8 of their first 21 points. Oklahoma would not back down though, scoring the last 8 points of the half to cut the halftime lead to just 3 for St. Marys.

For the first few minutes of the second half, the teams actually traded leads, but after the 12 minute media timeout, Dellavedova put the team on his shoulders again, hit back to back to back three pointers, as St. Marys got the lead back up to 11. That was all the spark they needed, even though they missed several free throws down the stretch, the lead was big enough at that point, and Oklahoma couldn't complete another comeback..

Final Score

#17 St. Marys- 67
#48 Oklahoma- 62

Other Pod Games

#128 George Washington- 72
#65 Dayton- 56

#97 Detroit- 71
#33 Wisconsin- 59

#16 Minnesota- 70
#80 Mercer- 45

Stars of the Pod

* Trevor Mbakwe from Minnesota had 12 points and 10 boards in the win over Mercer.

* Ray McCallum from Detroit had 29 points, including 5 three pointers, in the win over Wisconsin.

* Matthew Dellavedova from St. Marys had 17 points including back to back to back three pointers in the win over Oklahoma.

Round of 64- Pod 2

Game of the Pod

#56 Purdue vs. #9 VCU

It was really hard to pick a game of the pod this time, as all the games were decided by double digits, not a lot of excitement in this pod for the Round of 64.

VCU and Purdue have played in the actual NCAA tournament before, back in 2011. VCU played in the First Four games, beat USC, upset Georgetown, beat Purdue by 18, then upset Kansas in the regional final. They would eventually lose in the Final Four to Butler. Purdue would be looking for revenge here.

Unfortunately there wasn't much to talk about in this game. VCU's havoc defense caused 17 Purdue turnovers, 13 of those coming on steals. VCU led by as many as 15 in the first half and cruised to an easy victory in this one, much like they did in the actual NCAA tournament back in 2011.

Final Score

#9 VCU- 76
#56 Purdue- 59

Other Pod Games

#8 Southern Miss- 72
#57 Fresno St.- 62

#89 Robert Morris- 67
#104 Ball St.- 55

#24 Miami (FL)- 75
#88 Illinois-Chicago- 51

Stars of the Pod

* Treveon Graham from VCU had a balanced game: 9 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists in the win over Purdue.

* Shane Larkin of Miami (FL) had 20 points in the win over Illinois-Chicago

Fellow Readers, I just found out that I am going to have to take on a second job for the next few weeks (family business that needs my help), which is going to make my time very limited. Would you guys be terribly offended if I just did quick score recaps of this project, took a few week break, then came back fresh for the 2013-2014 version of this project? As it stands right now I'm looking at an upwards of a 90 hour work week (give or take) at least through the end of February, and possibly into March. So as you can see, when I do have free time, I am going to want to rest.

So if you guys don't mind, I'd like to (well I really wouldn't like to, since I know you guys are enjoying the format), but I need to speed through this project, if I can.

I will still pop on from time to time, maybe once a week to see the responses, but unless I have any major objections, I will probably finish this project up with scores only this weekend.

Also, SI, just a friendly reminder about my PM when you get a chance. and hoopsguy, you have a PM as well. Again, no rush on a response for those, as it will be at least the beginning of March before I start my next project, so whenever you get a chance.

At this point, the priority rooting interest is a Hoosiers loss. As far as hoping for the champion, maybe VCU? Or George Washington for the fun of #128 running the table.

#24 Miami (FL) vs. #8 Southern Miss

Pod 3

#36 Missouri vs. #13 UNLV

Pod 6

#103 Youngstown St. vs. #23 Florida

Pod 7

#78 UCLA vs. #3 Syracuse

Pod 8

#59 Santa Clara vs. #11 Oklahoma St.

Elite Eight Schedule

Just a reminder, there are no more pods. Pod winners are playing each other now.

#97 Detroit vs. #8 Southern Miss
#13 UNLV vs. #5 Gonzaga
#15 Indiana vs. #23 Florida
#78 UCLA vs. #59 Santa Clara

As for the final four, the way the brackets are set up is exactly how it looks. The Detroit/Southern Miss winner will play the UNLV/Gonzaga winner, and the Indiana/Florida winner will play the UCLA/Santa Clara winner. It's not out of the realm of possibility that we could see 2 non BCS (power conference) teams in the championship game. Unbelivable how things played out.

Well, that worked out well.
Let's see if I can find another way to impact the results.

Go Hoosiers! Win the title!

Who would have ever expected this for a Final Four? I sure wouldn't have. Hoopsguy, looks like your reverse psychology worked, as Indiana bit the dust.

So the Florida Gators have claimed the 2012-2013 NCAA WIS title! Thank you all for baring with me in this long grueling process. As many of you know, I have a topic going where I am getting the 2013-2014 NCAA basketball WIS season set up. I'm still finalizing exactly how I want to run it.

I will be starting that in a couple weeks, getting the teams and conferences set up. I would love it if some of you loyal readers would voice your opinions. Thanks to all, and looking forward to the next project!
