OOTP 17 - Quest for the Best (Phillies)

Starting this with the Phillies. Depending on how this goes I may expand and do the same for other teams.

The premise:
I ranked all of the teams based on their regular season record and took the top 32 teams. With those teams I split them into 4 divisions with 8 teams in each division and created a 32 team league.

There will be a 124 game season with each division winner getting a playoff spot. The playoffs will be 7 game series. The best Phillies team will be crowned at the end.

Matchup of the Day
World Series winner versus world series winner as the 1980 team hosts the 2008 team. Cole Hamels versus Steve Carlton.

In other notes about the opening day: A version of Carlton will be starting in 6 different games to open the season. Roy Halladay will be starting against himself in another game as the 2010 and 2011 teams open the season facing off.

In the top of the 1st the 2008 team takes a 1-0 lead as Rollins scores on a wild pitch but Carlton strikes out Burrell and Werth to strand Victorino at 3rd.

Pitching took over and Hamels had retired the first 11 batters of the game before a 2 out double by McBride in the 4th. Following McBride's double Schmidt takes the next pitch and crushes if over the left field fence for a two run homer to give the 1980 team a 2-1 lead.

The score remained 2-1 into the 9th as Tug McGraw comes in with a save opportunity ("You Gotta Believe"). Werth flies out to McBride for out number one. Chris Coste singles up the middle as a pinch hitter; runner at 1st with one out. Pedro Feliz singles to left; 1st and 2nd with one out. Ruiz takes a called third strike on a 3-2 pitch for out number two. Pinch hitter Geoff Jenkins strikes out to end the game. 1980 wins 2-1.

Matchup of the Day

The 1916 team hosts the 1950 team as Pete Alexander faces Robin Robert.

In the top of the 1st Richie Ashburn triples to lead off the game and scores on an Eddie Waitkus double to give 1950 a 1-0 lead. A two out Dick Sisler double brings home Waitkus to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the 2nd Dode Paskert and Possum Whitted lead the inning off with back to back triples to narrow the gap to 2-1. An RBI single by Bert Neihoff ties the game 2-2. After another single and sacrifice Neihoff scores on a 2 out wild pitch to take the lead 3-2. When second baseman Mike Goliat boots a ground ball another run scores as 1916 takes a 4-2 lead. A strikeout gets Roberts out of the inning but the 1916 team leads 4-2.

With 2 outs in the top of the 3rd Dick Sisler doubles home Ashburn who had doubled to lead off the inning to make it 4-3. Willie Jones follows with a 2 run double to give 1950 a 5-4 lead which is how the top half of the third ends.

In the top of the 8th a 2 run double by Granny Hamner gives 1950 a 7-4 lead. With two outs Richie Ashburn singles and Hamner scores on a throwing error to make it 8-4. A ground out ends the inning with 1950 in control.

The game goes to the bottom of the 9th with 1950 up 8-4 and Roberts is still on the hill. An infield hit by Possum Whitted to lead off the inning gives 1916 a little hope. A 4-6-3 double play ends that hope and leaves them with one out remaining and no base runners while needing 4 runs to tie. A pop up to 2nd ends the game with 1950 winning 8-4.

Matchup of the Day

1975 (0-2) vs. 1976 (1-1)

Larry Christensen versus Ron Reed.

In the bottom of the 2nd Larry Bowa doubles home Dave Cash to give the 1976 team a 1-0 lead. Ron Reed grounds out to end the inning (they should have walked Bowa to pitch to the pitcher... ).

In the top of the third Larry Christensen leads off and takes things into his own hands as he homers to left to tie the game 1-1. Garry Maddox follows that with a triple down the line in right, runner at third with no outs. Willie Montanez hits a sac fly to left to give the 1975 team a 2-1 lead.

Garry Maddox leads off the bottom of the third with a double. Jay Johnstone grounds out but it moves Maddox to third with one out. After Greg Luzinski strikes out Mike Schmidt singles to center to tie the game 2-2.

Jay Johnston gets a 2 out single in the top of the 6th and steals second. He would score on a Dave Cash single to center to give the 1975 team a 3-2 lead.

With one out and two men on in the bottom of the 8th Dick Allen hits a 2 run double to left center to give the 1976 team a 4-3 lead.

Gene Garber gives up a 1 out double to Maddox in the top of the 9th but strikes out Dick Allen and Greg Luzinski to cloes it out. 1976 wins 4-3.

Yes, but it will become a little less detailed shortly. Wanted to get myself a feel for the teams and then will start doing something like a week at a time with summaries.

Will probably do similar for some of the key teams and then a quick run for other teams (if this seems to be panning out).

In the 1st division the 2005 Phillies have gotten off to a good start with an 18-9 record, 2 games ahead of the 1980 team with 1915 2 1/2 out of first, 2001 3 games back and 1952 is 3 1/2 back.

The 2nd division sees the 1976 team leading with a 17-11 record and they are the only team that is over .500 with 1907, 1975 and 1978 all at 14-14. 1901 brings up the rear with the worst record in the league at 8-20.

The 3rd division has the 1983 team leading with an 18-9 record. 1916, 1953 and 2007 are 15-13 sitting 3 1/2 back. 1977 is 4 games back.

The 4th division is being dominated by 2011 who have started out 23-5, the best record in the league. 1966, 1981, 1982 and 2010 are all 8 games back at 15-13.

In a shocker to everyone, catcher Gavvy Cravath of the 1913 team leads the league with 10 home runs and is tied with the 1975 Greg Luzinski with 30 RBI's.

The 2001 Randy Wolf has been untouchable with a 6-0 record and a sub 1 ERA at 0.59. In 46.0 innings he has allowed only 23 hits, 8 walks and 3 runs while striking out 49.

4/6 - Curt Simmons of 1950 strikes out 15 against 1907
4/12 - Granny Hamner of 1952 hits 3 HR against 1978
4/14 - Joe Oeschger of 1917 pitches a no hitter against 2010

1st Division
The 1980 team played quite well this month and had a 2 game lead until they lost the last 3 games of the month (2 losses at the 1907 team) and they find themselves in a tie for 1st with the 2001 team at 47-37. The 2005 team fell off the pace a bit and find themselves 2 games out as they started the month losing 5 of 7 and played .500 ball the rest of the month.

2nd Division
The 1976 team has opened up an 8 game lead over 1905, 1907 and 1978 as they end the month with a 49-35 record. They have really turned it on at the end of the month as they have won 7 of their last 8.

3rd Division
The 2007 team has stepped up going 20-7 in the month and lead the 1983 team by 2 games with 1977 just 3 back. The 1953 team has dropped off the table having lost 18 of their last 23 games. The 2008 team is not living up to their world series title as they have fallen to last place.

4th Division
This division is just about over. The 2011 team has dominated from the start and they have the best record in the league at 60-21 and lead this division by 13 1/2 games over the 2nd place 1993 team.

Achievements
6/5 - Chase Utley of 2007 hits for the cycle against 1964
6/10 - Dick Allen of 1964 hits for the cycle against 2010
6/28 - Steve Carlton of 1975 sets a league high with 18 strikeouts against 1978

July Look Ahead

Two division leaders will face each other as 2007 will host 1980 to start the month.

2001 will host 1976 to start the month as both teams are in the running for a post season birth.

2007 hosts 2005 on the 3rd and 4th as 2007 has a tough start to the month against top teams.

1983 hosts 1963 on the 5th and 6th in what could be a good two game series though the odds are slim for 1963 as they are trailing the powerhouse 2011 team by what seems to be insurmountable distance.

1976 hosts 2011 on the 7th and 8th as the division leaders with the largest leads will face off.

July Roundup

1st Division
As we head down the final two week stretch the 1st division is still up for grabs as only one team is eliminated (though a second is technically eliminated, just not mathematically).

1980 leads with a 65-48 record and are 1 1/2 games ahead of 2001. 1964 has a 4 game hill to climb and two teams to pass if they want to make the playoffs. 1950 is 5 back as the chances are getting slimmer in this range of the standings. 1915 and 2005 are both 6 back. 1952 is the team hanging on at 10 back.

2nd Division
1976 has a magic number of 8 as they hold a 4 game lead over both 1978 and 1975. It's another 5 game gap to the next team which makes this basically a 3 team "race".

3rd Division
This division is a 2 (and a half) team race as 2007 has a 1 game lead over 1983 with 1977 hanging in at 4 1/2 back. 2009 at 10 1/2 back is the only other team still mathematically alive.

4th Division
The division that makes me wish I also used wild card teams as the two best records in the league are in this division with 2011 at 84-29 and 1993 16 games back at 68-45.

Summary
Only one of the world series championship teams is still alive in 1980; and leading their division. The 1983 world series team is still alive as they are 1 game back. The 2008 championship team has been eliminated as have the 1993 world series team (though they have the second best record in the league).

- Gavvy Cravath of the 1913 team has put in an amazing season. He is 4th in the league with a .346 batting average, 5th in the league with a slugging percentage of .582, 3rd in the league with a 7.8 WAR, 1st in the league by a wide margin with 41 homeruns, 1st in the league by a wide margin with 101 RBI, 2nd in the league with 85 runs scored and 1st in the league in isolated power at .336.

Pennant Chase

1st Division
Though the 1980 team leads by 1 1/2 game over 2001 they may have a tougher road ahead as the remaining teams on their schedule have a combined winning percentage of .574 while the teams which 2001 play have a combined winning percentage of .446.

1980 has both 1993 and 2011 on their remaining schedule.

2nd Division
1976 not only has a 4 game lead but they have the easiest remaining schedule in their division. It would be a major collapse if they didn't win the division.

3rd Division
Another scenario where the leader 2007 has a tougher schedule (.536) than the team trailing them, 1983 (.490).

What could be a big final series is a matchup between the 1980 and 1983 teams as both could need those games to win their division.

Interesting tidbit. The 2011 team only has a losing record against 1913 who swept the 4 games they played against them. They have 2 games remaining against 2009 which is the only other team with a chance to have a winning record against them.
