Zhào Takes Best Bat Award in April
Tuesday, May 1st, 2153: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 35-year-old Tien-kai Zhào put together a solid offensive month for Napa Valley and was crowned April's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .374 with 10 home runs, 29 RBIs and 22 runs scored.


Rodríguez Named RL Batter of the Month
Tuesday, May 1st, 2153: When José Rodríguez stepped up to the plate in April, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the Republic League Batter of the Month award.

The young Toronto first baseman posted a .350 batting average with 7 home runs, 23 RBIs and scored 17 runs. Rodríguez also worked pitchers for 16 walks to post a .454 on-base percentage.

Assassins Hurler Named April's Top Starter
Tuesday, May 1st, 2153: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Francisco Villa still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in April. The 28-year-old starter for Apex was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and 1 loss with 37 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.42 ERA in 44.1 innings of work.


Ann Arbor's Gonzáles RL Top Pitcher
Tuesday, May 1st, 2153: Miguel Gonzáles has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in April and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Winged Lingerines bullpen ace collected 5 saves and 14 strikeouts in 15.2 innings, holding the opposition to a .214 average and posting a 2.30 ERA and a 3-1 record.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month
Tuesday, May 1st, 2153: Tommaso Letizi was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 25-year-old center fielder definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen April's Continental League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 23 games Letizi batted .333 for Cleveland, slapping 33 hits in 99 at-bats with 4 home runs, drove in 14 runs and scored 18 times.


RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Tuesday, May 1st, 2153: Fernando Martínez is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In April the Chico hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .427 average with 32 hits, 1 home run and 11 RBIs.

Mike Hathaway is May's #1 Hitter in CL
Friday, June 1st, 2153: Mike Hathaway battered Continental League pitchers all May and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 29-year-old Hathaway told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 24 games, Hathaway hit .408 with 8 home runs, 27 RBIs and scored 19 runs.

Currently Hathaway is batting .381 with 77 hits and 12 home runs. He has knocked in 44 runs and scored 41 times.


RL Batter of the Month Honors to Spencer
Friday, June 1st, 2153: Bobby Spencer let his bat do the talking in May and the Republic League heard him loud and clear. He made plenty of noise as he put together a .402 batting average and was named the top hitter of the month.

Spencer's month to remember saw him accumulate 41 hits, 6 home runs, 18 runs batted in, 22 runs, 12 walks and a .465 on-base percentage.

Spencer on the season is hitting .328 with 8 home runs. His stats include 30 RBIs and 35 runs scored.

Oprel #1 CL Pitcher in May
Friday, June 1st, 2153: A 6-0 record with a 2.86 ERA is a pretty good month for most any pitcher. The Continental League thought it was worthy of an award and named Reginald Oprel, starter for the Noblesville Millers, May's Pitcher of the Month.

He also held the opposition to a .237 average while posting 41 strikeouts in 44 innings.

This year Oprel has recorded a 9-1 mark. In 11 starts he has fanned 66 batters in 78.2 innings with a 2.52 ERA.


Colorado Starter Named RL's Top Pitcher
Friday, June 1st, 2153: Tsutomu Kawano's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-1 in May, the 28-year-old Colorado hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 24 in 42.2 innings, logged an ERA of 0.84 and allowed opponents to hit .193 against him.

On his stats sheet this season Kawano shows a 5-2 record, 9 starts, 69.2 innings, 39 strikeouts and a 1.94 ERA.

Letizi Top of His Class in May
Friday, June 1st, 2153: A veritable toddler to the Continental League, Tommaso Letizi just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for May.

Over the past month the 25-year-old center fielder for Cleveland hit .339 with 41 hits, 3 home runs and 16 runs batted in. He also logged 10 walks and compiled a .403 on-base percentage.

Hitting .336 to date, Letizi has 7 home runs and 30 RBIs. He has played in 51 games.


RL Names Hart Best Rookie
Friday, June 1st, 2153: The Republic League made the official announcement today. The Rookie of the Month trophy went to Steve Hart of Hammersmith. He was singled out as the premier rookie in May.

Last month the 26-year-old Hooligans first baseman played in 13 games and hit .286 with 2 doubles, no triples and 7 home runs. Hart also scored 7 times and drove in 14 runs.

In 24 games this season Hart has batted at a .293 pace with 22 hits and 8 home runs.

Red-Hot June Lands McCromley Batting Prize in CL
Sunday, July 1st, 2153: Today Baltimore's Bill McCromley was named the Continental League Batter of the Month for June. He punished CL hurlers hard all month long, collecting 38 hits in 102 at-bats.

With a .373 batting average, 11 home runs, 36 RBIs and 34 runs scored, he was an easy choice.

So far this season McCromley has hit .318 with 17 home runs, 59 RBIs and and scored 73 times.


Castro of Hammersmith RL Batter of the Month
Sunday, July 1st, 2153: June's outstanding offensive player in the Republic League has been picked and the honor goes to the Hammersmith right fielder Leonardo Castro.

He won the award by batting .405, hitting 7 home runs, knocking in 28 runs and scoring 23 times.

This season Castro is batting .327 with 52 RBIs, 46 runs scored and 9 home runs.

CL Pick for Top Pitcher in June is Castillo
Sunday, July 1st, 2153: Noblesville Millers starter Héctor Castillo has collected the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award for a run of lights-out performances.

"This town really appreciates it when you're going well," said Castillo. "They might boo you when you're getting knocked around, but they love you when you're mowin' them down."

In June the 24-year-old compiled a 5-0 record in 6 starts with a 2.08 ERA. He threw 43.1 innings, fanning 17 while walking 6.

In the current season in 16 starts, Héctor Castillo has a record of 8-2 with 55 strikeouts in 107.1 innings and a 2.68 ERA.


RL's Top Pitcher in June Is Cortés
Sunday, July 1st, 2153: Veteran Júlio Cortés put together quite a successful stretch in June for the Hammersmith Hooligans, earning himself the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

Cortés racked up a 4-0 record in 6 starts, posting a 1.83 ERA over 44.1 innings and striking out 25.

This year Cortés has posted a 8-5 mark in 16 starts and has a 3.26 ERA.

Tim Terwilliger Named CL Rookie of Month
Sunday, July 1st, 2153: Youngster Tim Terwilliger emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Apex deserved the honor, batting .329 with 4 home runs and 12 RBI. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Terwilliger enjoy the limelight.

Terwilliger's current batting average stands at .240 and he has chalked up 5 home runs and 22 RBIs.


Marquee Month for Miyazaki, Top RL Rookie
Sunday, July 1st, 2153: Yoshimatsu Miyazaki earned June's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Hammersmith right fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Miyazaki hit .325 with 3 home runs, 11 RBIs and 17 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

So far this season Miyazaki has 10 home runs and a .274 batting average.

Dean Captures CL Batter of Month Award
Wednesday, August 1st, 2153: The Batter of the Month honoree for July in the Continental League is Baltimore Gothams center fielder Dave Dean.

He showed no mercy as he finished the month with a .362 batting average, 8 home runs, 26 RBIs, and 23 runs scored.

RL Best Hitter Award to Los Angeles's Willie Hancock
Wednesday, August 1st, 2153: Los Angeles's Willie Hancock wowed sportswriters in July with an award-winning performance. For his standout play he was voted the Republic League Batter of the Month.

He rang up a .378 batting average with 11 home runs, 23 RBIs and 19 runs scored. He also had 3 walks and a .408 on-base percentage.

For the year Hancock is hitting .251 with 21 home runs. His stats include 52 RBI and 41 runs scored.

Continental League Announces July's Top Pitcher
Wednesday, August 1st, 2153: Tzu-hsia Liu is at the zenith of his career and today he was selected as the Continental League Pitcher of the Month for July.

He made 12 relief appearances for Cleveland last month, throwing 18.1 innings and collecting 2 saves, a 3-0 record, 15 strikeouts and a 0.98 ERA.

On the season Liu has delivered 5 saves in 48 relief appearances. He has 54 strikeouts in 60.1 innings with a 2.24 ERA and a 7-2 mark.


Victorie Takes RL Top Starter Trophy
Wednesday, August 1st, 2153: July's elite pitcher was Teun Victorie of Los Angeles. He silenced Republic League hitters the entire month and claimed the Pitcher of the Month award with 4 wins and no losses in 5 starts.

Victorie restricted opposing hitters to a .295 batting average. He rang up 28 strikeouts in 34 innings of work, surrendered 3 walks and crafted a 3.97 ERA.

Cleveland Center Fielder July's Top Rookie
Wednesday, August 1st, 2153: Tommaso Letizi's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Cleveland center fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In July he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .298 with 2 doubles, no triples and 7 home runs. Letizi also scored 21 times and drove in 20 runs.

This year Letizi is batting .315 with 129 hits, 18 home runs, 62 RBIs, 48 walks, .393 OBP and has scored 69 runs.

Wednesday, August 1st, 2153: Fernando Martínez put up some real solid numbers to sew up the Republic League Rookie of the Month honors this month.

Hernández Top Hitter in CL in August
Saturday, September 1st, 2153: Snap, crackle and pop!
In August, Raúl Hernández snapped up the Continental League Batter of the Month trophy by cracking 35 hits and popping 10 home runs.

For the month he hit a solid .333 with 22 RBIs and 26 runs scored. The Napa Valley catcher also picked up 20 walks to compile a .445 on-base percentage.

Hernández is currently batting .273 with 33 home runs, 73 RBIs and 90 runs scored. He has 132 hits in 484 at-bats.


August's Premier Batter Announced
Saturday, September 1st, 2153: Tatsuzo Suzuki earned August's Batter of the Month honors in the Republic League by reeling off a .404 average, going 38 for 94 with 7 home runs, 20 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

The soon-to-be free agent was hitting with great urgency in an effort to bolster his asking price in the Chico clubhouse and around the rest of the league.

For the season Suzuki is batting .289 with 123 hits and 21 home runs. He has scored 54 times and batted in 62.

CL's Premier Starter is Hamada
Saturday, September 1st, 2153: When Tomiji Hamada takes the hill, he usually takes command of the game -- at least that's the way it was in August. The outcome was usually a Noblesville victory. His fine 4-0 performance earned him the Continental League Pitcher of the Month trophy.

The talented Millers hurler made 5 starts, worked 36.1 innings, permitted 20 base hits, and struck out 28 while putting up a 1.73 ERA.

For the year Hamada has a 16-4 record with a 2.32 ERA in 25 starts.


Toronto Relief Star Selected Best Pitcher
Saturday, September 1st, 2153: David Long had a super August and has been rewarded with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month Award. The Toronto relief specialist was very effective, constantly coming in and getting his club out of trouble or protecting a one-run or two-run lead.

the Toronto bullpen ace starred with 2 saves in 10 relief appearances, logging 13.2 innings, 10 strikeouts, 2 walks and a 0.66 ERA. Long finished the month with 4 wins and no losses -- and was named the league's top pitcher.

To date Long has 26 saves with a 12-2 season record and a 3.30 ERA. He also has made 52 relief appearances, thrown 60 innings and struck out 54.

August's Top CL Rookie Named
Saturday, September 1st, 2153: In August, Roberto Valenzuela put up award-winning numbers and came away with the Rookie of the Month award in the Continental League.

Last month the 23-year-old Napa Valley first baseman played in 25 games and hit .275 with 4 doubles, no triples and 11 home runs. Valenzuela also scored 20 times and drove in 27 runs.

So far this season Valenzuela has gotten 102 hits in 392 at-bats for a .260 batting average with 27 home runs. His stats include 76 RBIs and 62 runs scored. He has played in 100 games.


RL Picks Rookie of the Month
Saturday, September 1st, 2153: In August Doyle Eddy put up award-winning numbers, batting his way to a Rookie of the Month award in the Republic League.

The Los Angeles shortstop stroked 32 hits as he compiled a .323 average with 2 home runs and 14 RBIs.

This season Eddy is swinging the bat at a .278 rate with 128 hits in 460 at-bats. To date he has hit 12 home runs, scored 50 runs and driven in 59.

Cleveland's Vieta Snags September Batting Title
Monday, October 1st, 2153: For the month of September, Arturo Vieta of the Cleveland Cyclones has really worn out the sweet spot on his bat. He has assaulted, used and abused Continental League pitchers to the tune of a .438 batting average and was honored as the hottest hitter of the month today.

Vieta went 39 for 89 last month with 17 walks. The left fielder tallied 8 home runs, 29 RBIs, 26 runs scored and compiled a .533 on-base percentage.

Vieta currently has a .326 batting average with 172 hits, 26 homers, 96 RBIs, 105 runs scored and a .433 OBP.


Jones Awarded September's RL Top Bat Prize
Monday, October 1st, 2153: The Republic League Batter of the Month has been picked for September and the honor goes to the Toronto Marlboros Michael Jones.

He compiled a .345 batting average with 39 hits and 3 home runs, along with 21 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

So far this year Jones is batting .280 with 24 home runs, 96 RBIs and 96 runs scored.

Noblesville's Hamada Top Pitcher in September
Monday, October 1st, 2153: In September Noblesville starter, Tomiji Hamada really put the strong arm on the other Continental League teams and hauled in the Pitcher of the Month trophy. He did it with an impressive 5 wins and no losses.

In 6 starts and 41.2 innings of work, Hamada limited opposing batters to 21 base hits and a .146 batting average. He fanned 33, issued 9 walks and had a 1.73 ERA.

This year Hamada has worked 216 innings with 185 strikeouts en route to a 21-4 record and 2.21 ERA.


González Wins RL Top Pitcher Award
Monday, October 1st, 2153: As José González hoisted up the Republic League Pitcher of the Month trophy for September, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave Toronto once his contract is up at the end of the season.

González put pressure on the Marlboros to keep him around by posting a 4-0 record and an ERA of 2.02 over 35.2 innings last month. He also rolled up 21 strikeouts, increasing his value both to Toronto and to every other team in the league.

This year González has a 12-5 mark in 29 starts with a 3.29 ERA. He has given up 173 hits in 180.1 innings, struck out 103 and issued 34 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .251 batting average against him.

Top CL Rookie of the Month Named
Monday, October 1st, 2153: Michael Purkey wreaked havoc on Continental League pitching last month and led the charge for the Rookie of the Month Award.

In September he batted .308 for the Winemakers, lashing 24 hits and 6 home runs. The Napa Valley shortstop also drove in 25 runs and scored 15 times to round out a most impressive month.

This year Purkey has socked 119 hits in 537 at-bats for a .222 average with 24 home runs. He is getting on base at a .300 pace and his totals also include 91 RBIs and 74 runs scored.


Los Angeles Rookie Biggest Vote-Getter in RL
Monday, October 1st, 2153: With September's Republic League Rookie of the Month title slung over his shoulder, Doyle Eddy has no reason to be modest about his statistical output. But he was, telling BNN reporters, "I just put the bat on the ball a lot and a lot of them fell in. It was just my month to shine."

The 24-year-old blistered the baseball last month as he posted a .330 batting average, 32 hits, 5 home runs, 15 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

Thus far this year Eddy has hit .287 with 17 home runs and 74 RBIs.
