[Game] Name That Game

Inspired by CW's Video Game thread (here) last week, I decided to start one of my own. I'm still tinkering with the format- how many to do a day or week. But to start, I think I'll do a "gold"/"silver"/"bronze" set of games with a theme every few days and keep track of how people do. The bronze will be fairly easy and will basically be whoever gets to the thread first when I post. The silvers should be a little tougher while the golds (hopefully) will take a day or two to guess. I'm also trying to figure out a way to work "freebies" in so that the most popular games are in here, too.

Right now, I'll pick the games. As we get a little further along and if there's suitable interest, I can have people submit pictures for consideration so that everyone can have their favorite games in here. However, I will request that I am more or less the "admin" of the thread and that you don't submit games in posts of your own. The first set should be posted shortly.

EDIT (6.24.05): Before you play, make sure you read the rules in the next post. That way we don't have a game ruined for everyone else by someone who doesn't play correctly (particularly that you can only guess on one per day and that you must get a freebie before you can guess on others).

Rules

Main Game Rules

1. Don't post your own images here- if you want to do that, go to the original thread. Submissions will be allowed in the future but those would be via PM and not right now.

2. To guess the GSB images, you have to guess a "freebie" first.

3. One guess per day of the GSB images. You will have to choose whether you want to take a chance on the gold or go for a safer easier one to get points in the bank.

4. (7.12.2005) Guesses reset at midnight Central Time. So, conceivably, you could get more than one right in a set if they aren't all guessed in a day. Or, if you miss the first day, you could still get a game right the second day if it hasn't already been guessed.

5. Each guess should be it's own post unless otherwise noted of the format "Gold 1. GameName"

6. Any person guessing multiple games or submitting multiple entries for the day will have all disqualified and no points will be awarded. (7.12.2005) If the GSBs are guessed, they'll likely just go off the board and be marked (N/A). Freebies probably remain on the board, but that's left up to my discretion.

7. Try not to edit your posts. It messes up the time stamps. If you don't like something you did, delete the post and do it again.

8. Clarification of titles/guesses is left up to my judgement (i.e. whether the guess of "Mario Brothers" for "Super Mario Bros" is correct or not).

9. (6.16.2005) An addendum to Rule 7 from here. If a game is part of a series such as X-Com then the guess of "X-Com" for "X:Com UFO Defense" is incorrect. This is to prevent players who don't know the game but guess a series name in an attempt to get a second guess.

10. (6.16.2005) Also from that same place: Here's what happens in the event of two quick guesses that are the same:
A. If the first guess is correct. That means the second guess is null and void since they're guessing on a problem that's not there. So, right or wrong- the guess just doesn't exist.
B. If the first guess is incorrect then the second guess counts as the person's guess for the day and will be judged as such.
11. Should the accursed time stamp bug rear its ugly head, then I guess timing will be left up to my discretion, too.

12. (7.1.2005) The schedule will be as follows (unless otherwise posted in the thread, due to vacations, etc): one game on each of the following: Monday/Tuesday, Wednesday/Thursday, Friday/Saturday.

13. (7.1.2005) Standings will be determined by score (as stated in the Scoring System area below). The tiebreaker between two identical scores will be the number of games guessed so that someone with 10 points and 5 games will be ranked ahead of someone with 10 points and 3 games.

14. (7.4.2005) Prior to 7.4.2005, players who already have a freebie may not answer another. After this date, anyone may guess on freebies to increase their games total. However, freebies are like any other guess- they count for your guess for the day (incorrect or correct), not a free guess, and correctness will be held to a normal GSB standard unlike when new players try to guess the freebie.

15. All other judgements are left up to me. I'll try to be fair but anything where a "mod"'s judgement is required will probably favor one side or another. I'm not trying to be biased towards anyone, just trying to be fair and enforce the rules in a manner which I see as working best.

Scoring System (subject to change)
Gold 5 points
Silver 3 points
Bronze 1 point
Freebie 0 points (but must answer to guess others)

Guest Submission Guidelines
Taken from:[link]
1. You are limited to the systems used thus far (Atari, Sega Genesis, NES, SNES, PC, Arcade, Playstation, N64). Shouldn't be too hard- there's a lot to work with there.
2. You are allowed to submit up to three games.
3. To submit, send an email with the subject "NAME THAT GAME" to rocket34*AT*yahoo*DOT*com (hopefully the spam filter won't get it).
4. The format for each game submission should be as follows:
Game:
System:
Link to Screenshot:
Suggested Rank: (Freebie, Bronze, Silver, Gold)
5. Keep in mind, you won't be able to guess your own games during Guest Submissions.
6. Also, I can't use every submission but I will try to get as many as possible, up to 10. I may change up the suggested ranking but I could also go with it. If I don't pick a game- it could possibly be because I had it saved up for a future game and you may see it there (at which time, you can guess since I'll use a different screenshot).

Other Game Rules
None, yet- but I've got some ideas (for instance: you get a small corner of a screenshot and as the week goes by, gradually pull the image out until the last day it's a full screenshot which should be fairly easy to guess)

NES Classics (1st Edition)

Today's Theme: NES Classics (1st Edition)

Here is the intial mess of freebie games so that once the real ones start, everyone who gets a freebie can start guessing on the GSB games. Some are from the thread last week but, really, they're freebies. They're so easy that if you have to "cheat" and look, then you're probably not getting too many in this thread anyways.

Remember: only guess one game. There should be more than enough for everyone and it'd be best to not have one person stealing all the guesses from other players.

The format for a guess should be as follows: "5. GameName" and that's all that needs to be in the post. However, if I were playing, I'd probably wax nostalgic about said game, write up a paragraph, and by the time it's posted someone will have sniped it (d'oh).

Heh. Talk about easy ones. But, I'll gank Final Fantasy. The only version of the game I never did beat. Got to the very end dungeon, and died horrible painful deaths a vast multitude of times.

To be nice....

Well, the idea is that the easy ones are the "gatekeepers". You don't get to guess on the easy ones for points, much less the hard ones unless you have answered one of the freebies.

For FF, I never really had too many problems with the last dungeon. But the damn Elf Cave *shudder* Eventually, had to just level up, beating on Ogres and Creeps for hours on end to equip enough weapon, armor, and spells to go in there

1. Super Mario Brothers... I went to Children's Palace the day Nintendo came out to get it because of playing Super Mario at the bowling alley. To this day, I play most arcade games palms down on the controllers because of this game. (makes it hard to pull "triggers" on the newer systems)

So far everyone is 4 for 4 with the cakewalk ones

The correct answers have been added above (the ones that have been guessed). Also, the four of you have been added to the standings post since you can all now guess once I start with the real ones.

I think today might just be "signup" day, a set or two of freebies to start people out so they're on the list. Maybe I'll decide to throw one out there at some point tonight that's worth points, but I have a pretty busy night.

Northwood_DK is correct, of course. I think SMB3 is one of the two best games ever made for console (when taking into account what else was out at the time, future influence, etc).

Good reminder, TazFTW. All has been made well now. It was a good illustration of what not to do so that when we actually have real games to guess people will know.

Of course, as tk said, that was the first Legend of Zelda game, which started it all.

And the lovely blocks of Tetris are indeed #9. I could have gone with the spinach green blocks of the Game Boy version but I was sticking with NES games. I wanted to us Dr Mario but the words "Dr Mario" are on the play screen. Maybe I'll use it as a freebie when I'm running out or something.

I played this game just days ago with my four year old son. He has never been interested in games before but when my wife cleaned out some of here old stuff she found an old Nintendo. He spend hours in front of the TV with the game this weekend but enjoy watching others play more then doing it himself.

Heh. Yeah, I remember that as well.

My problem at the end was very simple: I didn't have a white mage in the group. My group was Fighter/Thief/Red Mage/Black Mage (ironically, the 8 bit theatre group). Die at the end, you're pretty much screwed.

8-Bit Theatre rocks!

The end battle for FF was a bitch yeah.. I was thrilled when I beat it (on the first try, luckily enough) and is it just me or was the Masamune Sword in FF totally not all that it was cracked up to be?

All I remember about Duck Hunt is that my sisters puppy chewed through the cord to the gun and we never bought another one. It took me years before I could tolerate that dog.

May I ask what the point is of requiring getting a freebie before you can play? I just got saw this thread and now I won't be able to play? How often will freebie rounds be done? Not sure I understand the point of this freebie business.

Basically, the idea is to have a place to show off the easy games and make them a part of the game. But they're so easy I don't think they should be worth points. Also, I don't really want someone to drop in one day, guess all the big point games, and then never play again. If you have to guess a freebie before doing GSB games, then the likelyhood of that is lessened.

I'll post the first GSB round tomorrow (well, today, I guess since it's 4:30am) and there will be some more freebies there. I'd post it now but it looks like photobucket is down.

I wouldn't worry about it too much (about people having spots). I'll have tons of freebies and I'm actually worried that there won't be people to answer them. It just means a few people will miss a day or two. In the grand scheme of things- not really too long.

Photobucket looks like it's back up so I'm collecting screenshots as we speak. I'm thinking we'll have the first round of GSB coming up in the next two hours at some point and there will be a batch of freebies with it.

IMPORTANT

After kicking this around in my brain for a bit, I've decided to alter the rules slightly going into the first day. You get one guess per day total. That way you have to decide if you want to take a chance and guess on the gold, settle for the fairly safe silver, or be stuck with bronze. Also, it makes sure it's not just who sees the thread first cleans up the low level points.

If you break these rules and guess multiples, your entry will be disqualified for the day ("Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."). The rules will be updated shortly.

NES Sports

Today's Theme: NES Sports

I want to get to some PC, SNES, Genesis or other games but all in due time. The NES is such a rich crop of games and this is the perfect theme to kick off the contest. Keep in mind the new rule: You get 1 guess per day so choose your game wisely. Also, be quite specific in your game titles since the rules are stricter now that the points count. "Mario Bros" may have counted yesterday for "Super Mario Bros" but not today since the points matter. If you don't have a freebie, there's four new ones for today for you to start off with, but they count as their guess for the day (ie you can get a freebie but will have to wait until tomorrow to guess on the GSB's, if any are still unguessed).

Anyways, enough administrative, onto the games. Today we have (non-baseball) sports games for the NES. One of the freebies, of course, being the super cult classic which could probably be adopted as favorite game of the board. The others are a little more uncommon while the gold will require some video game geekiness to guess (I hope).

Not until tomorrow, provided they're not guessed (if they are, then there will be a new one posted). I just want to try and let as many people guess as possible.

Also, the little glitch where I copied a bronze game as a freebie has been corrected (freebie 2 has its real picture up there).

Incorrect, unfortunately. I was wondering how hard that one would be as I never played it personally but I thought it was midly popular. I was waffling between whether it or silver 1 got the second silver spot.
