San Jose State-The Spartan Chronicles

I have always wanted to write a college football dynasty but Bowl Bound always seemed to glitchy and for whatever reason I couldn't get into TCY. BYU14 began his UMass dynasty with DDS CF17 and I got hooked on it and decided that maybe I should give the game a try. After having tried out various teams I decided to go with the San Jose Spartans...for the last 12-15 years college football has been my favorite sport to watch, it doesn't matter the team if there is a game on the tv is turned to it (drives my wife and kids crazy when they ask who I am rooting for and I tell them it doesn't matter, unless it is Oklahoma who I do root for). I really get into the post prime time games usually featuring Pac 12 and WAC teams, leading me to root for the underdogs, usually San Jose St. I'm going to go back to 1980 and attempt to turn San Jose into a West Coast power. I'm also going to chronicle some of the top recruits from throughout the nation, San Jose probably won't be in the running for any of them but it will be fun (I'm going to use some names from the past to spice this dynasty up).

9/3/80 San Jose St (0-0) @ UConn (0-0)
The Spartans flew across the country, battling engine problems on the charter flight and an early kickoff to face the UConn Huskies. The game looked to be a blowout early as the Spartan defense made UConn QB Vito Sanchez look like an early Heisman front runner, throwing three early touchdown passes, with UConn taking a 21-6 halftime lead. The Spartans were able to close the lead to 21-19 and then 28-26 with four minutes left but Robert Jones put UConn on his back and scored the clincher with :24 on the clock to give UConn the 35-26 win. 3rd down efficiency doomed San Jose on both side of the ball, 7/18 on offense and 7/12 on defense with the defense surrendering 592 total yards and despite three Husky turnovers, couldn't seem to get off the field in key spots of the game.

9/10/80 #12 Clemson (0-1) @ San Jose St (0-1)
Clemson came to the west coast in a bad mood after the thrashing they took a the hands of Miss. St and they completely took it out on the Spartans. We were completely ineffective on third down, 4/20 and turned the ball over twice. Scot Mann came in and finished the game after the Clemson defense broke Oscar Day's nose, Mayfield managed 116 yards on 35 carries and Valentin led the game with 57 receiving yards. The defense failed to show up today, not going to talk about any highlights, good thing Clemson payed us a ton of money for this game. We won't be scheduling any east coast studs anytime soon. The only good thing is we have a bye week coming up.

Ughh, the Spartan faithful can't say that we didn't have our chances this game, at one point we led 18-3 and if Jason Garrett wouldn't have been
coaching for some of this game we probably would have (and should have) won. Jeff Ferguson subbed in for Oscar Day and went 29/42 with three
touchdowns, over 300 yards and had at least six drops (I quit counting after that), the only thing he doesn't do well is run the ball. Mayfield
had another 100 yard game averaging 4.1 a carry but the defense let us down late again, on a side note the in game action is kinda confusing, bunch
of red/white blobs that look like a run should be stopped short but rarely is.

First Quarter Season Review 0-3
Two winnable games sandwiching a complete blowout. The issues all boils down to we can't get off the field on third down 18/40 on defense and 19/54 on offense. I like even run/pass mix so we do have quite a few thirds downs but for the most part they should be convertible, we just aren't getting the job done. Our starting QB suffered a broken nose against Clemson but our backups have done an adequate job, if we don't get outscored 18-7 in the second half against UNLV we win that game but the defense just did not have it in them to make big stops. I like our running back Mayfield and our receivers, I don't like our defense, just 4 turnovers and 3 sacks. No recruits signed yet/none lost. I'm not planning on scheduling any teams east of the Mississippi for the foreseeable future, we still have an end of season meeting with Notre Dame who seems to be pretty good right now.

I have identified the problem with our team...Defense. We can't stop anyone, we give up 14 points to Hawaii in the final quarter and squander a tremendous performance by Ferguson and Lopes, who connected five times for two scores. I'm going to make wholesale changes to the secondary and see if it can't light a fire in some of them. Mayfield had his typical 100 plus yard day, maybe a slower tempo game/ball control offense is what the Spartans need. Hawaii is not a very good team, we should have won this one.

10/8/80 San Jose St (0-4) @ Wyoming (3-2)
The Spartans hit the road to Laramie to take on the 7 point favorite Cowboys who boast one of the best defenses in the WAC. The Ferguson to Lopes combo got the Spartans off to a quick 7-0 lead, mixing the run and pass effectively to put Wyoming on their heels. The Cowboys evened the score 10-10 at the half. Another Ferguson touchdown pass to Valentin put the Spartans up 17-10 but the Cowboy defense clamped down and picked Ferguson off twice in the next quarter and a half, forging ahead of San Jose 20-17. Coach Garrett went to the run and the combo of Mayfield and Wilson, who gained 180 yards for the game, brought the Spartans down to Cowboy 21. The Ferguson to Lopes combo struck again with 1:03 remaining and with an inspiring speech from team leader Arthur Smith the Spartan defense strip-sacked Matt Purdue to ensure the first Spartan win of the year. The best effort of the year from the Spartan defense who may be beginning to gel (or maybe Wyoming was just overrated).

10/15/80 Nevada (3-2) @ San Jose (1-4)
San Jose welcomed the Wolfpack to Spartan Stadium looking for their first winning streak of the season. Jeff Ferguson looked to keep up his torrid pace since becoming the starter 3 games ago and he did not disappoint. The Spartans jumped out to a quick 11-0 lead after a Brennan field goal and a Ferguson to Breaux 13 yard pass. Ferguson threw two more touchdowns in the first half, unfortunately one of them was a pick 6 to Don Bullard as the Spartans were driving making the score 11-7. Frank Wilson caught a touchdown pass, followed by a Wolfpack touchdown and each team traded field goals for a 21-17 Spartan lead at half. The Wolfpack struck first in the 3rd quarter with a field goal and after a 3 yard plunge by Mayfield Nevada ended the scoring in the 3rd with a touchdown run of their own. The two point conversion was stopped but two of the Spartans top defenders Sr FS John Maldanado and Jr LB Arthur Smith collided on the play and were helped off the field, unable to return. Ferguson had one more touchdown pass in his arm to Valentin putting San Jose up 35-26. Nevada answered with a touchdown of their own but Brennan kicked a field goal with 1:30 left and a desperation pass was intercepted at the Spartan 22. Tight back and forth game, probably one we lucked out to win.

Three more upsets in the SEC, nobody can get hot. Oklahoma squeaks by Baylor and after the ACC puts two teams in the Top 10 Louisville gets crushed by Clemson.

10/22/80 San Jose (2-4) @ San Diego (2-5)
Big time match up this week as we are going head to head with the Aztecs for a handful of recruits and the Spartans showed up to play. Dennis Mayfield was hot early and Jeff Ferguson was his usual workman-like self, only throwing one touchdown but 20/29 with a 130 rating. San Jose was up 14-3 at half. Frank Wilson came into the game at running back to give Mayfield a break, 49 attempts between the two for 192 yards/. We tack on 20 more in the second half and win big.

Mid-season review 2-4

So I lose a game against Hawaii that I should have won, beat a Wyoming team by 4 that missed 3 field goals and shut down a pretty good Nevada team so to sum it all up...I have no idea if this team is good or not. I would say we are WAC good but overall getting thumped by Clemson shows just how far we have to go being a top 25 team.

11/5/80 Purdue (2-6) @ San Jose (4-4)
Our third Power 5 opponent this year and second one to come out west (our athletic director obviously knows how to negotiate) Purdue is slumping in the Big 10 but I am not going to take them lightly. The Spartans have played poorly outside of the WAC and we need a big signature win to drive up interest in our program. Clarence Anderson started off Spartan scoring, hauling in an 8 yard pass from Ferguson after a Purdue field goal opened the game. Anderson has come on strong of late with two touchdowns in the last two games, the sophomore obviously responding to some tough love from our offensive coaches. We traded punches in the 2nd quarter as Wilson found the end zone to put San Jose up 14-3 but Zack Shea repeatedly found holes in our secondary, connecting twice for scores of over 50 yards. All San Jose could manage for the rest of the half was two Brennan field goals and we were only up 3, 20-17, at half. The 3rd quarter was more of the same as Shea put the Boilermakers ahead with another touchdown pass and then our fullback Rodger Brooks put us back up 27-24 with a one yard plunge. After another Brennan field goal to start the 4th Shea threw his fourth touchdown of the game to put Purdue back up on top 31-30. Our kids then decided that they had taken enough Boilermaker abuse, Ferguson delivered another touchdown pass, his 17th on the season, and capped off the drive by running in the two point conversion. The Spartan defense rose up and forced a three and out on the next Boilermaker possession and Gary Elrod took the punt 61 yards for our first return touchdown of the season! A late Brennan field goal ensured a large lead for San Jose and ran our winning streak to five in a row!

11/12/80 Utah St (4-6) @ San Jose (5-4)
The Aggies came into San Jose as one of the lower ranked teams in the WAC and we definitely played down to the competition today (more than likely we aren't as good as I think we are). Each team exchanged field goals to start the game but we went on an 89 yard play topped off with a Rodger Brooks 9 yard run to finish the quarter at 10-3. two more field goals were exchanged to start the second quarter and we got on another drive but Ferguson was picked off in the end zone to stop the drive. One more San Jose field goal right before the half put us up 16-6. All we could muster in the third quarter was a 4th field goal, followed by another long drive resulting in another Ferguson pick. Utah St took the turnover back down the field and scored to tighten the game up 19-13. Coach Garrett then decided that he needed to let his running back get some work as Mayfield and Brooks, who combined for 170 yards, marched down the field with Ferguson ending scoring for the day with a 3 yard touchdown pass to Michael Caro. Altogether the best game our defense has had which could say more about the Aggie offense than our defense but the news of the day is we run our winning streak to six in a row!

11/19/80 Air Force (2-5) @ San Jose (6-4)
The Spartans were having a great week of practice, had received really good news on the recruiting front and seemed ready for the Air Force Falcons to come to town,
unfortunately someone forgot to tell Jeff Ferguson and with the bright lights shining on him he went out and stunk up the place! Ferguson got the scoring started in the
form of a pick six to Robert Vernon. After managing a short field goal after the Falcon defense came up big inside the 5 yard line (we should have gone for the touchdown
on fourth down) Paul Sommer tossed a 47 yard pass to put the Falcons up 14-3. Another Ferguson pick led to the only scoring of the 2nd quarter making it 21-3 at half. A
3rd interception in the 3rd quarter put the Falcons deep into Spartan territory and William Sinclair ran it in from 7 yards to make the score 28-3. A Brennan field goal
Ferguson to Valentin touchdown pass made it a little more appealing to the eye but all in all and stinker of a game for San Jose. 2/12 on 3rd down and a -3 turnover ratio
will kill a teams chances every time.

11/26/80 Notre Dame (9-1) @ San Jose (6-5)
Another game that we really don't want to talk about from the San Jose perspective. For some reason Notre Dame comes to our place and give us a beat down, we manage a measly 3 points in the loss. Burn this film tape
Final Notre Dame 54 San Jose 3

So two losses in our last 3 games leave us 6-6 and we have to sweat out whether or not we get a bowl game. No way we where going to beat Notre Dame but we should have been more competitive. The Air Force loss stings, we were the better team but for whatever reason we didn't show up.
