Next 10 Songs

It's been awhile since we've done this, and since so many people now stream music, the results could be more interesting than in the past.

Put on your most common music source (iPod, Spotify, Pandora, computer, CD player, whatever) and put it on shuffle. What are the next 10 songs that come up?

For me, I listen to most of my music on my iPhone and have a playlist of 4200 songs or so that are currently on my phone. Since I can rarely stream (low LTE/cell signal in my building and my data plan doesn't allow for unlimited streaming anyway, no wifi I can access for streaming music, either), I rely on this music to get me through the day. I have a playlist that strips out the classical music and audiobooks/spoken word stuff and otherwise can easily be shuffled. So the next 10 songs in that playlist are...

1) The Naked & Famous - Young Blood (Tiesto & Hardwell Remix)
2) Paul Oakenfold - Faster Kill Pussycat (feat. Brittany Murphy)
3) The Beatles - Taxman
4) Skrillex - Right On Time
5) Armin van Buuren - Down to Love (feat. Ana Criado)
6) Linkin Park - Living From You
7) Jeremy Soule - Wind Guide You (from the Skyrim soundtrack)
8) Kathleen Edwards - I Make the Dough, You Get the Glory
9) Wilco - You Never Know
10) The Blake Robinson Synthetic Orchestra - The Hidden Truth (from Chrono Trigger Symphony Vol 1)

Interesting mix of songs there...some I'm moderately embarrassed about. Wonder what it would have come up with if I'd done the playlist for songs that haven't been played in the last 60 days...

/tk

Here's the 10 that come up on my iPhone:

1. Got My Mind Set On You - George Harrison
2. Patience - Guns 'N Roses
3. God Only Knows - The Beach Boys
4. Climbing Up The Walls - Radiohead
5. Life In The Fast Lane - The Eagles
6. The Grey Album (all on one MP3) - Danger Mouse/Jay Z
7. One After 909 - The Beatles
8. A Dream Within A Dream - The Alan Parsons Project
9. Hangin' Tree - Band of Heathens
10. Angels - Robbie Williams

Kinda normal, compared to what my library could throw out there

sounds like fun - lets find out...

Engage Randomator!

1. Freedom Cry, by Deep Forest
2. Integral, by Pet Shop Boys
3. You Keep Me Hanging On, by Vanilla Fudge
4. Karma Killer, by Robbie Williams
5. Halo, by Depeche Mode
6. Sitting on the Moon, by Enigma
7. Dancing in the Dark, by Schiller with Ameerah
8. Doomsday, by Nero
9. Automatic Lover (Call for Love), by The Real McCoy
10. Crawling (Club Mix), by Zara Taylor

So there you are! Ummm, 90s Eurodance, 60s psychedelic, some of my fav groups in there (Schiller, PSB, DM) - the only thing its missing is a Jazz Fusion song by someone like Blood, Sweat and Tears, early Chicago or Chase to and perhaps an indie artist from my MP3.com days and that would complete a perfect sweep of my major interests.

EDIT - Song 11 just started playing as I was typing this - Jesus is Just Alright With Me, by the Doobie Brothers. I guess that gets honorable mention...

So out of the first 40, the only acts on multiple lists are The Beatles (not too surprising) and... umm... Robbie Williams.

9) A Perfect Circle - Sleeping Beauty

I'll play. Taken from my "Currents" playlist on Spotify (about 1,600 songs which contain the majority of the tracks from several smaller playlists that I typically queue from when listening at length)

Barracuda - Adrenaline Mob
Fire It Up - Thousand Foot Krutch
Riptide - Sick Puppies
Bad Motherfucker - Man Made Machine
Paralyzed - Red Line Chemistry
Satellite Soul - Strange Daze
Fade Away - We Came As Romans
Riot - Bullet For My Valentine
Overcome - Gloomball
Matter Of Time - Hellyeah

Aside from the genre, the thing that struck me was the absence of any solo artists on my list (the only one thus far where that's happened I believe). Caused me to check, I had to go 24 songs deep before one appeared (I'm Alive - Sebastian Bach), only 3 in the first 50 tracks that it randomized.

edit to add: Of course while I was posting that little observation Sabotai posted one that had the same anomaly

From my main Pandora station, which tends to play in blocks I've noticed:

1. Keri Hilson - "Energy"
2. Akon - "Freedom"
Commercial
3. Jay Sean - "2012"
Commercial
4. Sean Kingston - "Beautiful Girls" (Interesting this is the Nickelodeon mix, which replaces "suicidal" with "in denial" and a few other lyrics changes. Most amusing? It's on the Music From and Inspired By iCarly :P)
5. R. Kelly - "I Believe I Can Fly"
6. Elliott Yamin - "Fight For Love"
7. Brian McKnight - "The Only One For Me"
8. Usher - "You Remind Me"
Commercial
9. The Shirelles - "Mama Said"
Commercial
Commercial
10. BoA - "Winding Road"

Like I said, blocks. This one was R&B heavy. Another time of day, I'd get a completely different emphasis. In fact, let's see what the next 10 brings:

1. Jersey Boys (Original Broadway Cast) - "Sherry"
2. The Regents - "Barbara Ann"
3. Super Junior-M - "Go"
4. Israel "IZ" Kamakiwiwo'ole - "Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World"
5. Dion - "Take Good Care Of My Baby"
Commercial
6. The Isley Brothers - "Shout"
7. Brenton Wood - "I Like The Way You Love Me"
8. Garth Brooks - "What She's Doing Now"
9. George Strait - "Blue Clear Sky"
Commercial
10. Trace Adkins - "Every Light In The House"

Yep. Blocks. From R&B to oldies-heavy and the last few songs seguing to country.

1) Less Than Jake - Five State Drive
Not surprised, I own more of their albums than anyone else
2) David Myles - Pair of Shoes
Amazing canadian folk artist, who is fantastic to see live, and won a juno for best rap song, don't ask, just check out Inner Ninja with him and classified.
3) Kim Wempe - Chameleon
Saw her as an opening act, reminds me of Lissie in a way.
4) Joel Plaskett - Waiting to be Discovered
Hate his music, I know I'm supposed to love him but his voice is terrible
5) Millencolin - Kemp
Still love these guys, rock on
6) Miles Davis - Budo
The king of cool!
7) Coeur De Pirate - Adieu
Amazing music video, simply hilarious (hxxp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7vYo6l06lo)
8) Samiam - Are You Alright?
So sad these guys stopped making music
9) David Myles - Lean into the Wind
10) Lupe Fiasco - Superstar
Great song, underrated rapper

From my giant Spotify playlist

1. Stickshifts and Safetybelts - Cake
2. Call and Answer - Barenaked Ladies
3. Cannonball - The Breeders (I'm surprised this one came up on another list)
4. Fell In Love With A Girl - The White Stripes
5. Sell Out - Reel Big Fish
6. Thrift Shop - Macklemore
7. Two Princes - Spin Doctors
8. Ruby Soho - Rancid
9. Are You Gonna Be My Girl - Jet
10. Breakfast at Tiffany's - Deep Blue Something

I was expecting to have something much more varied, since I have all kinds of genres on there, but it looks like I got the 90's alternative block going for some reason.

Dirty Projectors - Gun Has No Trigger
Laura Veirs - Sun Song
Damien Jurado - Magic Number
Mirah - Special Death
Incubus - Dig

I'm the one with Cannonball and almost all of your songs could have easily shown up on my list. Except for the Spin Doctors. Can't fucking stand the Spin Doctors.

Nice Pokemon reference.

Loving these lists. I won't lie, part of my motivation for doing this is to get some new music recommendations...will have to take some time to cull through it though.
