And the first pick in the 2023 NBA/WNBA draft is....

James excited about pending fatherhood

Cavs star wants to be better dad than his dad was

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal staff writer

COLUMBUS - LeBron James is expecting to become a father any day now, and he couldn't be more excited about it.

He's expecting a son with a 19-year-old Akron woman, who was due to deliver last weekend.

``I'm excited about it. It is a wonderful opportunity in life,'' James said after practice Tuesday at Capital University, where the Cavaliers are holding training camp.

While he's a bombastic personality on the basketball court, James prefers to keep his personal life very private. But he's expected to miss a day of training camp or more when the baby arrives and wanted to be open about the situation with the fans.

James, 19, has long adored children and is very close to his family, especially his mother, Gloria. He has been very active in the Akron community with kids, donating money to refurbish community centers and basketball courts and to outfit children with backpacks and school supplies.

But more than his excitement to have a child of his own, James wants to be a better father than he had. His mother had him when she was 16 and he never got to know his dad, who has since passed away.

``That's my main goal, to try to be a better father than the one I had,'' James said. ``I didn't know him. I didn't know the situation he was in. But I'm going to do my job the best way I can.''

No details whether it is a girl or a boy yet. Hopefully he doesnt turn into shawn kemp.

Why waste the best years of your life when you're young and filthy rich?

You think the kid will wait until the age of 19 to go pro?

If she get's lucky and we get 2 more generations of under 20 parents, she can be a great-great-grandma by ~75
hell, If these kids really get down to business, she can be a great-great-great-grandma by about 85 (if she can hang on that long).

I don't think you could have missed the mark by a larger margin.

Maybe we could have a legendary battle in the finals between father/son James and Team Kemp.

Haha..no, I'm not his dad. I'm annoyed because I'm frustrated that a young black athlete who has more money than he probably knows what to do with, had nothing else to do but knock some girl up.

I appreciate that he's acknowledged it and that's saying something. Maybe it's his high school girlfriend. But on some level, its just sad because maybe - as an outside observer, of course - I cling to the idyllic notion that people would wait until they'd lived a little.

But I'm not a multimillionaire.
