Hugh Hickman: The Story of a walk-on (TCY/FOF)

I've been reading some great "follow a player" dyasties lately, so I thought I'd try one out. But to make it more unique, I decided to follow just one player instead of several. That means this dynasty will end whenever his career does. And will be a lot more detailed, since I'm only really writing about one guy. Plus, it's a lot less stats I have to go through, so that's a plus!

I wanted to do a story of a non-scholarship walk on, for more of an "underdog" feel, but I didn't want my player to be terrible either. So I chose the University of Washington (where I go) and looked at all the walk-ons. I tried to choose a guy that had good potential, but definitely wasn't quite "there" yet.

I'll run FOF simultaneously (starting in 2004), importing each draft class until my player leaves college to go to the NFL. Then I'll switch to FOF full-time. Of course, he could go undrafted and never get signed, then sadly the dynasty will have to come to and end. So here's hoping he makes some sort of an impact in college.

So here's some background info on him and his team:

Hugh Hickman grew up in Seattle, WA and graduated from Franklin High School in 2003. His grades and GPA were good enough to get him into the University of Washington. He was pretty smart and had a natural talent for academics, but he never had a passion for it. All his teachers agreed that while he was very smart, he always seemed to be off in the clouds, thinking about something else. That "something else" was his true passion: Football.

He was devastated to find himself with no Division 1 offers, but he got through the pain and decided that since they didn't come to him, he would go to them. He took a gamble and tried out for the University of Washington football team. The scouts and coaches saw great potential in him, and offered him a spot. He was so stunned and grateful when he heard the news he didn't even care that he would have to redshirt his Freshman year. "I just have to wait one year, then I can live my dream?", Hugh thought to himself. "Sounds like a good deal to me!"

2004
Week 1

After a year that seemed like an eternity, Hugh is now on the active roster for the Washington Huskies. He's the 4th string running back, so let's take a look at the guys ahead of him in the deph chart:

#25 Leslie George, Senior (67/67)
Ferndale HS (Ferndale, Washington)
The starting halfback for UW. At 6'1" and 203lbs, he's pretty big for a running back. He's got a lot of power and is great when it comes to short yardage plays. His speed isn't anything special, but his power gives him pretty decent yards per carry. He's also pretty good at receiving too, especially 3rd down receptions. And according to the "attitude advisory" tab, he's literally the happiest guy on the team. His grades could definitely be better, but he's focused on his football career for now.

#47 Dana Holmes, Senior (56/56)
Sam Barlow HS (Gresham, Oregon)

The 2nd string halfback. Short and stocky, he weighs 209lbs at just 5'9". Surprisingly though, he doesn't nearly have the power inside that Leslie George does. His strengths are his speed and his ability to avoid fumbles. He's not as good a receiver as George, but he's not bad either. It's also worth noting that while his Intelligence is a 1, his academic aspiration is a 99. He's majoring in Kinesiology, which Wikipedia says is a designated regulated health profession which deals with "the science of human movement". Looks like some career options for this major are rehab work and disability management. Dana really seems like a great guy, to be honest.

#37 Courtney Simmons, Sophomore (39/51)
Jess Lanier HS (Bessemer, Alabama)

3rd string. He needs to work on his breakaway speed and power, which are pretty bad now but could be decent. His greatest strength is 3rd down running. He's an OK receiver but needs to work on not dropping the ball. He's a borderline genius, majoring in Nuclear Engineering. Maybe it's his stressful schoolwork, the fact that he's 3rd string, or the fact that he doesn't have a girlfriend, but his happiness is only rated at a 5. I don't think Courtney will ever be an elite running back, but he really needs to not be down on himself so much.

So that's the running backs...4 guys named Leslie, Dana, Courtney, and Hugh. I like to imagine they spend their free time hanging out, wearing top hats, sipping Earl Grey tea, and talking about their favorite Charles Dickens novels. Joking aside, Hugh does have the potential to become better than any of them. Being such a small guy, he's never going to be as powerful as most, but if he ever reaches that 96 speed...he's going to be one hell of a player.

One last thing...before the season starts, here's the Top 25 team rankings as the season begins:
Code:
1. Michigan 2. Oklahoma 3. Florida State 4. Miami (FL) 5. Nebraska 6. Ohio State 7. Texas 8. Georgia 9. Southern California 10. Florida 11. California-Los Angeles 12. Tennessee 13. Louisiana State 14. Penn State 15. Clemson 16. Virginia Tech 17. Kansas State 18. Alabama 19. Notre Dame 20. Wisconsin 21. Texas A&M 22. Washington 23. Iowa 24. Oregon 25. Maryland

...and the overall Pac-10 team ranks:

Code:
#9 Southern California #11 California-Los Angeles #22 Washington #24 Oregon #28 Washington State #34 Oregon State #45 Arizona State #46 California #48 Stanford #58 Arizona

#22 overall, #3 in Pac-10...not too bad. USC and UCLA should be trouble, and Oregon and WSU aren't far behind, but they should have a pretty good year from the looks of it.

Their first game is Week 2 vs. #59 Fresno State of the WAC (Western Athletic Conference)

Try searching for the walk on story of Ardent Enthusiast.

The only thing that qb was good at was scrambling.

vs. Fresno State (W, 45-7) 1-0, 0-0

The Huskies destroyed the Bulldogs...not only did they outscore them 45-7, they gained 589 yards to Fresno State's 121. Despite Washington's dominance, their running backs didn't run the ball very well. Leslie George had just 30 yards in 12 attempts, and Dana Holmes had 13 yards on 4 attempts. George did have 58 receiving yards, but the real hero was QB Kerry Ogden. 25 completions in 37 attempts, 296 yards, 4 passing TDs, and 1 TD he ran in himself was enough to earn him Player of the Game honors.

Hugh did play, but only as a special teamer. He didn't appear in any offensive plays.

That win was a good way to start the season, but it's not going to be that easy the rest of the way. Their next game is Week 4 vs. UCLA. That's gonna be a tough one.

Week 4

vs. UCLA (W, 21-10) 2-0, 1-0

Kerry Ogden once again dominated the competition and gave Washington their second win of the season and (more imporantly) their first conference win. Ogden went 22-for-34 with 309 yards and 2 TDs. Leslie George struggled again, getting only 38 yards from 18 attempts. Holmes fared better, with a 72-yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter. Apart from that monster run, however, he had 8 yards in 4 attempts. Bad news though as their number one WR Wendell Gonzalez severely injured his shoulder. He'll require surgery and is done for the year.

Hugh played special teams only again, appearing in zero offensive plays.

That crucial win bumped them up to #5, but UCLA isn't going to stay on the bottom there for long. Plus, they've still got several quality teams in their conference to deal with. They go on the road to Notre Dame for Week 5.

@ Notre Dame (L, 7-10) 2-1, 1-0

Neither offense was doing well; both defenses shut down their opponents all game. A 29-yard field goal by Notre Dame's Alvin Price late in the 4th Quarter sealed it, and Washington was dealt its first loss of the season.

George continues to struggle running the ball, getting just 25 yards on the ground. But he's still good when it comes to receiving, getting 62 yards in 5 catches. Same story again for Hugh, only played special teams.

So Washington got knocked out of the top 25 with that loss, but it's still very early. They get another conference game next week, they're away again at Stanford. Stanford just got beat 9-29 by UCLA, so I think Washington has a pretty good chance at a victory.

Well that one hurt. They had a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, but an interception returned for a TD put Stanford on the board at the start of the second. It was 17-17 at the end of the fourth, and while Washington got a field goal, Stanford running back Brady Wilkerson scored a TD to give Washington another loss.

While Ogden wasn't sharp (14-30, 3 INT), Leslie George finally broke out of his running slump. He had 123 yards in 21 rushes. Once again, Hugh played but only on special teams.

That was a big loss. Washington gets a breat in Week 7 when they host San Diego State. They're also 2-2 but ranked #78 to Washington's #33. But then they host Oregon State then go on the road to face USC. Hopefully Oregon State will have cooled down by then, but that USC game is going to be tough regardless.

Here's some more team stats :

Well, Washington State's looking pretty scary. The offense isn't too good but the defense is helping pick up the slack.

vs. San Jose State (W, 44-3)
3-2, 1-1

With 5:21 left in the 3rd quarter, and Washington up 30-0, San Jose CB/KR Buddy Wofford returned a kick from the 4-yard line and ran 21 yards until he was knocked to the ground...by Hugh Hickman. Yes, Hugh in his 5th game finally recorded some kind of statistic. It's been a long time coming Hugh, but good job.

To add to his day, he got to return a kickoff of his own at the beginning of the 4th quarter after a San Jose field goal. He only made it 14 yards, but it was nice knowing that with regular KR Otis Webb injured, he was the go-to guy to return a kick.

As for the rest of the game...it was a slaughter. It was never even close.

vs. Oregon State (W, 21-10)
4-2, 2-1

OSU Quarterback Steven Dunn's 2 interceptions were a huge factor in Washington's win. Besides the turnovers, both teams were pretty equal. It was a defense-dominated game but both of Dunn's 2 INTs were returned for touchdowns, so Washington took the lead and never gave it back.

More importantly (to our story), Leslie George suffered a pretty serious arm injury in the 3rd Quarter and had to leave. The arm is broken and he'll miss 9 weeks, ending his season. Which means Hugh gets bumped up to 3rd string RB. Dana Holmes is the starter now and Courtney Simmons will be the backup.

@ USC (L, 35-45)
4-3, 2-2

USC jumped out to a 14-0 lead, but Washington fought back, and it was 21-14 USC at the half. On the first drive of the 2nd half, Kerry Ogden fumbled the ball, which was recovered by USC for the touchdown. Both teams fought back and forth, but in the end USC did better in pretty much every category.

Hugh got his second special teams tackle of the game. Actually, it was the very last play of the game. USC's Dana Wallace had just recovered Alan Sanders' kick return fumble. Wallace got 9 yards before Hugh brought him down. Now, Wallace is a Tight End and 6'3", 230. Hugh is 5'8", 166. How he actually physically accomplished this, I'll never know.

Washington visits Oregon next week. Oregon has struggled, even moreso than Washington. So this is a good opportunity for Washington to gain some ground next week. Especially good matchups next week, with Washington State hosting USC and UCLA hosting Stanford. 2 of those 4 teams losing should to help Washington out a lot.

Washington was down 0-3 at the half, but both offenses came to life in the 2nd half. Washington simply outplayed Oregon though and came away with a much-needed victory. Hugh got to come in on the very last play of the game. Washington had just intercepted an Oregon pass, and their drive started with 8 seconds left on the clock. The quarterback took a knee and the game was over, but Hugh finally got to play in his first offensive snap.

This one wasn't ever close at all. Washington had the lead after 2 minutes and never looked back. Holmes is settling nicely into the starter's role, getting himself 133 yards and 2TDs on the ground. Hugh played on a couple passing plays, but other than that it was same ol' special teams work for him.

One last game at home vs. California. Then off to Washington State for the last game before the bowls begin. I really don't see Washington getting ahead of USC. Second place would be great, but they have a lot of good teams nipping at their heels.

Ouch. Washington couldn't really get anything done offensively, and Ogden's 0 TD and 2 INTs really didn't help things. It was a very winnable game that turned into a disappointing loss. Hugh was strictly special teams again.

Basically, Washington needs to beat Washington State next week.

2004-Week 13

@ Washington State (W, 44-13)
7-4, 5-3

Wow, Washington came into the game as underdogs but mopped the floor with Washington State. Washington's defense held the Cougars to just 42 yards. Holmes got a couple touchdowns on the ground and Ogden spread the ball around nicely. Good show by all. Strictly special teams for Hugh again.

2004-Beginning of Bowl Games

Here's the PAC-10 Standings heading into the bowls (and what bowl, if any, each team qualified for)

Code:
OVR CONF #1 USC 11-0 8-0 "Solecismic" Bowl vs. Miami(FL) (7.2 Mil) #18 Stanford 8-3 5-3 "Neverending Hype" Bowl vs. Texas (1.5 Mil) Washington 7-4 5-3 "Fair and Balanced" Bowl vs. Virginia (900K) Oregon St. 7-4 5-3 "Argyle Socks" Bowl vs. Kent State (480K) California 7-4 4-4 "Swift Boat" Bowl vs. Auburn (480K) Washington St. 7-4 4-4 Arizona St. 6-5 4-4 UCLA 6-5 3-5 "Used Car" Bowl vs. Minnesota (480K) Oregon 4-7 2-6 Arizona 0-11 0-8

Does anyone happen to know the real bowl names for these? I kind of want realistic names instead of the fake ones.

The PAC-10 went 5-1 in its 6 bowl games. USC is the national champion, beating Miami(FL). Washington got one of the 5 wins, and surprisingly Leslie George was well enough to make the start for his final college game. Ogden finished a good year, passing for 302 yards. Hugh was restricted to special teams again.

In the NFL, Tampa Bay beat Pittsburgh 29-6 to win Super Bowl XXIX. The MVP of the Superbowl was Kicker Martin Gramatica, who went 5/5 in FG attempts, including a 54-yard FG.

2005-Preseason

New season, and Hugh finds himself bumped up to third in the depth chart. His new overall/future rating is 29/83. With George and Holmes graduated, here's the new depth chart for running backs:

(note: my new Northwest Scout is "terrible" with running backs but at least decent with everyone else. So these ratings aren't nearly as accurate as 2004's, when my scout was "excellent")

#32 Seth Rabbitt (73/73)
Stanwood HS (Stanwood, WA)
That's right...a running back named "Rabbitt". If he was terrible that would be hilarious, but he's actually pretty good. He was redshirted last year (his sophomore year), so he enters 2005 technically a Junior, but with 3 years of eligibility left. He's the first string, and is great at pretty much every category.

#37 Courtney Simmons (40/83)
Jess Lanier HS (Bessemer, AL)
Well, it seems like Courtney has really made improvements all-around. Not just football skills, but his happiness too. Last year, if you remember, he was miserable (happiness was a 5). This year it's a 53, which rates as "good". He does have a girlfriend (Margaret) now, and getting bumped up a spot in the depth chart almost certainly helped things.

#23 Ross Jackson (31/51)
Colonial Heights HS (Colonial Heights, VA)
The new recruit and 4th-stringer. He's got pretty decent potential all-around, but especially with Kick and Punt Returns. He probably won't get many opportunities this year though.

2005-End of Season

Well, bad news (kind of). I had all the info for the first couple games ready, then I accidentally clicked "sim year" instead of "sim week". Before I realized what happened, it was too late.

So unfortunately I'm going to have to skip all the action from 2005, but here's some info for the 2005 season:

-Washington went 3-5 in the conference, 5-6 overall. That put them in 8th place, with no bowl game.

-UCLA is the PAC-10 champion.

-Miami(FL) beat Oklahoma 35-7 to become the national champion.

-The Heisman winner was Miami(FL) QB Artie Newsome, for the second year in a row. He went 290-for-461, had 3988 Yards, 47 TDs, and 12 INTs.

Hugh's game log:

his career stats:

and his stats compared to the other 3 running backs:

So not a very good year, but at least Hugh got more experience then he did last year. Rabbitt was great, and Simmons was a dependable backup. Hugh really needs to improve next year if he wants a reasonable amount of playing time.

in the NFL...

-The Indianapolis Colts beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Superbowl XL.

-The Superbowl MVP was RB Edgerrin James, who had 124 yds rushing, 49 yds receiving, and a touchdown.

-The MVP for 2005 was Colts QB Peyton Manning.

How Hugh's old teammates did in the NFL:

Solid rookie season from Gonzalez. It's still kind of surprising to me that Tracy, the backup QB would get drafted while Ogden gets left in the dust after his good senior year. He's rated at 4/15, so I guess he's just one of those good college QBs that can't cut it in the NFL. What's also sad is neither Leslie George or Dana Holmes got a call from a team. George is currently 14/21 and Holmes is 18/33.

OK, so that's it for 2005. Next year will be back to normal as far as updates go.

Ross Jackson was redshirted. The depth chart for RBs starts out the same as last year: (I got a new NW scout. This one is good with RBs again, so these ratings should be more accurate than 2005)

1. Seth Rabbitt (74/74)
2. Courtney Simmon (49/74)
3. Hugh Hickman (37/49)

The 4th string running back:

#30 Hugh Robbins (19/39)
Haysi HS (Haysi, Virginia)

Huh. 2 running backs named "Hugh". I'm not really sure why Jackson is redshirted instead of Robbins. Robbins' ratings are pretty bad across the board, and his potentials top out at about average. I don't see him getting much playing time this year.

Hugh Hickman is happier than ever, though. (74, up from 69 last year). Still content with his playing time, still going out with Gertrude. He's relaxing a lot less this year, spending more time on his studies, weight training, and playbook study.

Washington's 2006 schedule:

the PAC-10 rankings:

So despite a disappointing 2005, Washington is ranked 4th. USC and UCLA are definitely the teams to watch out for, though. Oregon has also improved a lot over last year.

and before the season begins, here's who was drafted from Washington in the 2006 NFL Draft:

Two first-rounders and a second-rounder. Impressive. Blassingame and Henry get reunited in Kansas City.

Hugh's game logs for the first 3 games of the year:

Oh my. Not looking good so far. If he keeps up this pace, I'm not sure how much time he's going to see next year...let alone the NFL.

Washington RB comparison:

PAC-10 Standings:

That win against Miami was HUGE. It's still early in the season, but already things are looking better for Washington.

Week 5

Washington continues its hot streak, beating Arizona 48-10.

And Hugh continues to...not see much action at all. One little 1-yard run, that's it.

Washington gains a place in the Top 25, but California and USC are still ranked ahead of them. This is going to be a tough conference, no matter how well Washington does.

2004
Week 6

Hugh appeared on just one offensive snap and wasn't given the ball. The season certainly isn't looking much better for him...

The rest of the team, however, is doing great. Another conference win this week puts them at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Stanford, California, and USC still look like they're going to be trouble. And don't count UCLA out...they should get a lot better as the season rolls along.
