Splitting planning and raiding into two actions aren't necessarily a bad idea. I just think that if you did that, you'd see almost everyone put points into dueling and trade because the other four just aren't worth it.
I lost you here…planning and raiding is already two actions.

Quote:
As it is right now- boarding is just such a useless skill from a meta-gaming standpoint. You still only have a d4 shot at finding a ship and the better ships are much higher whereas towns don't move at all.
Cruising is the safer and quicker action, though. You lose a boarding action and ye may have crew/ship damage to replace, but if you lose a raid you may also end up dead or wounded. Also, with four dice rolls instead of three for a raid, the random factor is increased, so you better have a good plan in place. The Master/Minion aspect has made raids easier, but that’s fine. I tried to structure the game with an emphasis on booty-grabbing fun.

Quote:
And if you spend your points building up a good cruiser and boarder, well, you're going to be dead from your lack of dueling ability. While you spent your first 3 upgrades and initial boost to get you cruising and boarding up to d8, that other guy has a dueling at d8 and trading at d8 so even if he's not as good at planning or raiding or cruising or boarding, he's getting twice as much loot as you when he succeeds so it cancels out. Never mind that he can just kill you with his d8 dueling, to boot. Much easier to build up gold either by getting better trades or killing another pirate for it. That said, if there's a giant pirate killing spree, I'm guessing it's like Omerta- there's only limited replay value when everything you've worked for is lost so easily.
Dueling is not intended as a primary means of accumulating gold. That’s not what The Brotherhood is about, and if a pirate becomes a mass murderer on the island he’s going to end up dead. You’ll notice occasional prompts that suggest crew anger or bitterness toward other pirates and thus potential reasons for challenging, and the players can take their own “offense” at actions, but otherwise I think of dueling generally as a defensive skill. Now on the other hand if a pirate hits the motherload on a treasure ship, and is waltzing around with a huge wad of gold, he’s probably a target. That’s what retirement is for.

I don't know if it worked out the way i thought it would.
Against Guano ships, I did ok, but I thought my boarding would at least allow me a chance at some of the tougher ships...but I couldn't even get close to Shelly Baker. I just saw the other stat increases seemed to work out better for others.

It just seems so much more profitable to take Raiding or Cruising.

TURN 11 REPORT:

Pirate lore o’ th’ day: What kind of booty could a pirate get in Pittburgh?

A d6 ship, the “Sinner’s Heart,” remains for sale to the highest bid above 35g. A trade action is required.

Spicy Antonio D'Griffin is selling his former ship “Pooh’s Revenge” (d4 -1) as well.

The cartographer made some nautical charts of the area, and paid 2g to the following pirates for their assistance each action:
• Iron Foot William (1st)
• Sterling Silvers Jr. (2nd)
• Feverish Billy Rumsucker (3rd)

Due to incessant pirate raids, the Spanish have reinforced many of their garrisons above the fishing village level. Defense levels may be higher as a result. Plans must specify non-Spanish raid targets to avoid this unfortunate obstacle, and will suffer a (-1) penalty due to the inherent limitations.

Turducken has caught wind of a nasty rumor that a nearby island’s witch-doctor produces non-lethal potions which sour the stomachs of ship crews. Such a potion, it is said, could be placed aboard a pirate ship with bothersome results. This, of course, is a nefarious method below a member of The Brotherhood. [inquire via PM if interested]

Quest: Sentinel Rock (inquire with an action)

Ye Olde Waiting List has an entry!

Remember to list a mandatory Drunken Debauchery action if you have one for Turn 12. Also be aware of any crew losses or ship damage, and accept or decline any trade offers.

= = = = =

The results:

Iron Foot William (239g)

Accepted 1g from Sterling Silvers Jr., and 11g from Raider Lizzie

1. Assist cartographer = +2g (+20% chance of +1 modifier per cruising action)
2. Trade = Accepted offers of 21g and 18g for yer luxuries
3. Minion o' Sterling Silvers II = Raid 56 (6 + 5/2/4/3 + 3/4/9/3 + 3/8/4/2) vs. Defense 14 (3+2+2+7) = An overwhelming victory! The guns o’ the “Savage Sea Turtle” silenced the port’s defenses, and Raider Lizzie’s crew did good duty ashore. The other crews all suffered losses, however. A disappointing 17g was plundered, but 8t+6t+2t+2t+2t in resources was shipped aboard the ships o’ the pirate fleet. The mayor of the city was taken hostage.

Lawrence the Lazy (15g)

Turn 11 Actions:
1. Raid the Fishing Village = Raid 12 (3+4+3+2) vs. Defense 9 (3+2+2+2) = The village yields without a fight! 1g plundered, and 4t+1t guano shipped, and remarkably a hostage of some repute was taken as well!
2. Inquire about Quest = Seems there is a rocky island close by one of the primary shipping lanes, and a guild of resource traders has taken to manning this place with sentinels to warn off their ships if pirate’s be lurking nearby. It is unknown if/how the place be defended, but a raid upon the island would surely be commendable. [requires a plan like any other raid]

2. Drifting on wreckage
3. Sailed home aboard a grog scow

Tough luck! Ye be without a ship, lad. Spicy Antonio D'Griffin’s old ship, “Pooh’s Revenge,” sits unused in the harbor, but ye’ll have to work out arrangements with him to take her as yer own. Another pirate might front ye some gold. In the meantime, ye be restricted ashore at Turducken Island.

Turns out the city’s harbor defenses were poorly manned – perhaps as a trap - but the troops were certainly present ashore, and all pirate crews suffered losses. Still, 18g was plundered, along with 8t+8t+7t+7t+3t+1t in resources.
2. Cruise for Guano = no ship found

Starting with Turn 12, raid plans may randomly expire if not used immediately (during the next turn). Each turn thereafter, I will roll a d10, and if the number is greater than the level of the plan, it expires.

Reminder:
If you obtain more booty cargo without trading what's already in your holds, the lowest-valued cargo gets thrown overboard. Also note that raids in particular have a good chance of filling up all empty holds.

Dammit. Missed the turn again. I was so used to Coug posting deadlines in the middle of the day I didn't bother to check the timestamp on the deadline post. I was going to jump in late in the period with my orders.

TURN 12 REPORT:

Pirate lore o’ th’ day: Grog is a mixture of rum and water, and sometimes such things as sugar or citrus fruit were added for taste.

A d6 ship, the “Sinner’s Heart,” was sold to Raider Lizzie for 45g.

Given the going price, a Turducken shipwright has offered to build a d6 vessel for 40g, paid up front. It will take d4+2 turns to build.

Spicy Antonio D'Griffin’s former ship “Pooh’s Revenge” (d4 -1) is still for sale.

A new supply o’ boarding cutlasses may be purchased at the Turducken blacksmith’s shop. 10g outfits yer entire crew.

We have a new brother!

Remember to list a mandatory Drunken Debauchery action if you have one for Turn 13. Also be aware of any crew losses or ship damage, and accept or decline any trade offers.

= = = = =

The results:

Iron Foot William (217g)

Sent 10g each to Silvers, Lizzie, and Antonio.
Accepted 14g in trade offers

1. Recruit a d4 crewmember. (1g)
2. A wenchin' we will go! (5g) = A poor Wenching effort 18 (12 + 1 crew +5g), and the wenches (62) spurn ye.

1. Wenching (2gp) = A poor Wenching effort 15 (12 + 1 crew +2g), and the wenches (62) spurn ye.
2. Wenching (2gp) = Another weak Wenching effort 20 (16 + 2 crew +2g), and the hot wenches (89) spurn ye.

Vaclav the Cruel (1g)

At the appointed time the two rivals met on the dueling beach of Turducken Island. Vaclav snarled out his challenge once more to Bart’s face, demanding the return of his gold and satisfaction for the affront of the attack upon the “Avenger.” Bart spit a giant rum-flavored loogie at him in reply, but with a quick lunge Vaclav swiped his sword across Bart’s exposed throat. The loogie was the last thing to pass through Bart’s lips, excepting a gurgle, as his lifeblood spewed through the newfound gap in his neck. He collapsed face-first into a pool of his own gore, dead as a door knob.

Ye took 2g off the corpse.
