Well, it only took two years to get Marino his ring. I think this dynasty will get harder as the years go on. We were set up with a very good team from the beginning. It will be difficult to maintain that, especially with the house rules I've set up.

Sorry I stopped this for a bit, but got caught up in WOOF when my teamn actually started to get good.

Now that we're in the slow part of the offseason, I'm finally ready to start 1985! Marino already has a Superbowl ring, so we'll look to open up the offense and get him some yards.

Offseason News

*S Lyle Blackwood is the only Dolphins retiree. We still have his brother Glenn and also Mike Kozlowski, so we should be okay for now.

*Other notable retirees include QB Ken Anderson, QB Terry Bradshaw, WR Alvin Garrett, G John Hannah, RB Franco Harris, OLB Tom Jackson, DE Harvey Martin, K Mark Moseley, DE Jack Youngblood

*Last year I picked Fairchild in the 4th round of the draft. He had ugly bars, but a terrific combine. Pre-training camp, he was listed as 17/27, but improved 20/33 after camp. Thinking that his true talent is being heavily masked, I started him for 14 games last season and he only allowed 4 sacks. He will get the call for the Summer League and hopefully we can unmask him some more.

*If this were MP, I would definitely franchise someone. But all of my unsigned guys are either old/restricted/not worth it.

Free Agency

*We re-sign several restricted FA's, including WR Anthony Carter, LT Junior Flint, QB Cedric Strickland, and DE Corwin Morrison.

*Paul Fairchild has already improved to 31/36 after his summer trip.

*We only have $3.3 million in cap space, but with 47 players already under contract, this shouldn't be a problem. In fact, I don't even see a need to do anything in free agency, so I skip all stages.

Per my house rules, I must use my 1st round pick on a guy that the Dolphins drafted that year. Here is the list of Dolphins draftees from 1985, with my comments on how they look in the file...

1.27 RB Lorenzo Hampton - Looks way better than he really should, although it's an average combine and he will likely drop quite a bit post-TC.
3.9 DT George Little - Not a good combine. Looks like 5th round material, if that.
3.27 LB Alex Moyer - Some decent bars, but pathetic combine scores. No dice on this guy.
4.7 DB Mike Smith - Three green combine scores. Nope.
4.27 T Jeff Dellenbach - Listed in the file as a Center, which I don't really need. Looks like he can be moved to other OL positions. With two blue combine scores, this might have to be the guy.
6.5 WR George Shorthose - Love the name, but he is not in the file.
6.27 RB Ron Davenport - One blue combine score, but two greens. Not worth it.
7.27 - K Fuad Reveiz - Clearly the most talented player at his position that I could pick in this list, but I certainly don't need a Kicker.
8.27 TE Dan Sharp - Not in the file.
9.27 - DB Adam Hinds - Not in the file.
10.27 - DB Mike Pendleton - Not in the file.
11.27 - RB Mike Jones - Not in the file.
12.27 - DB Ray Noble - Not in the file.

1.32 C Jeff Dellenbach, Wisconsin

Picked this guy out of default. No one else made sense. Hopefully he can be moved to G or T without much of a hit. Could still use depth at RB, but I'll have many more mediocre Doilphins RB's to choose from in the next few drafts.

2.32 G Duval Love, UCLA

My house rules stipulate no RB or defensive player can be selected until the 3rd round. This was the best guy on the board that fit the rules. Has good combines and will get some time to develop.

3.32 MLB Alvin Toles, Tennessee

Not really happy with this dude, but I need a backup MLB and couldn't find anyone better.

4.32 CB DD Hoggard, NC State

He could develop into something. Has an above average combine and looks decent for a guy sitting around at this spot.

5.25 S Jim Bowman, Central Michigan

Just filling out my roster. Don't expect anything else from this guy.

5.32 OLB Jesse Penn, Virginia Tech

More roster filling. Won't see the field unless there's a serious injury.

I have a full 53 players, so I decide to trade away my remaining draft picks (for a 5th next year), and finish the rest up on Free Agency.

Notable Training Camp Movement

Dan Marino - 90/90 to 95/95
Don Strock - 33/33 to 25/25
Tony Nathan - 66/66 to 53/53 (ouch)
Pete Johnson - 56/56 to 47/47
Nat Moore - 40/40 to 33/33
Duriel Harris - 44/44 to 39/39
Paul Fairchild - 31/36 to 34/34 (Notable because I thought he'd keep climbing.)
Duval Love - 20/35 to 24/41
Doug Betters - 47/47 to 38/38

Some pretty big hits there could cause us some trouble. Can't count on Nathan for a 99 yard TD run this postseason.

Here is the 1985 Dolphins roster:

Code:
Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Marino, Dan 5 QB QB 3 95 95 5 yrs Strock, Don 7 QB 13 25 25 3 yrs Strickland, Cedric 19 QB 3 33 47 1 yr.

Strock is a pure mentor QB. The backup is Strickland who filled in for an injured Marino for 3 games last season and had a 97.4 QB rating. Marino is now the top QB in the league.

Code:
Nathan, Tony 25 RB RB 7 53 53 3 yrs Carter, Joe 37 RB 2 34 40 3 yrs Gray, Mel 26 RB 2 22 36 2 yrs Bennett, Woody 39 FB FB 7 53 53 4 yrs Johnson, Pete 38 FB 9 47 47 2 yrs

Nathan had a massive drop, but this is a passing team, so no need to get worried. He's still adequate enought to handle the load. Carter is a pure ST player that I have to keep for his rookie contract, and Gray is also a ST player, but a dangerous return man who was very valuable for us last season.

Code:
Miller, Junior 84 TE TE 6 66 66 3 yrs Rose, Joe 16 TE 6 61 61 2 yrs ##Gordon, Jimmy 80 TE 3 26 32 1 yr. Duper, Mark 85 FL SE 4 65 65 5 yrs Carter, Anthony 89 SE 3 52 60 1 yr. Clayton, Mark 88 SE FL 3 69 69 5 yrs Harris, Duriel 86 SE 10 39 39 1 yr. Jensen, Jim 87 SE 5 46 46 5 yrs ##Moore, Nat 82 SE 12 33 33 2 yrs

As you can see, Marino will have plenty of targets this season. Harris and Moore have aged, but the young guys have really come on. Miller and Rose are a terrific TE tandem.

Code:
Moore, Blake 51 C 6 56 56 3 yrs Stephenson, Dwight 58 C C 6 97 97 3 yrs Foster, Roy 61 LG LG 4 69 69 5 yrs ##Dellenbach, Jeff 59 LG 1 20 42 4 yrs Simmons, Roy 72 RG RG 7 53 53 3 yrs Fairchild, Paul 64 RG 2 34 34 3 yrs ##Love, Duval 66 RG 1 24 41 3 yrs Flint, Junior 63 LT LT 3 42 57 2 yrs Bryant, Warren 69 RT 9 45 45 3 yrs Laakso, Eric 76 RT RT 8 55 55 1 yr. Stuart, Isaac 65 RT 3 35 49 1 yr. ##Boyle, Jim 67 RT 2 29 48 2 yrs

We have one of the best Centers in league history and a top notch LG. After that, it gets a little sketchy. The rookies don't bring much to the table, and Fairchild's stunted development caught me off guard. Marino will have to rely on that quick release this season.

Code:
Roby, Reggie 13 P 3 81 81 5 yrs Von Schamann, Uwe 6 K 7 81 81 2 yrs

With this duo and our fantastic gunners and returners, we no doubt have the best Special Teams in the league.

Code:
Betters, Doug 74 LDE 8 38 38 3 yrs Browning, Dave 99 LDE LDE 8 68 68 2 yrs Barnett, Bill 1 RDE 6 39 39 1 yr. Morrison, Corwin 79 RDE RDE 3 51 51 1 yr. Baumhower, Bob 97 LDT LDT 9 68 68 2 yrs Franklin, Stan 94 LDT 3 29 52 1 yr. ##Charles, Mike 75 RDT 3 24 36 2 yrs Shepps, Howard 92 RDT RDT 3 36 51 1 yr.

We have a nice mixture of terrific veteran player with improving youngsters. The D-line should be a plus for us this season.

Code:
Brown, Mark 90 MLB 3 25 48 4 yrs Duhe, A.J. 95 MLB MLB 9 53 53 2 yrs Bowser, Charles 57 SLB 4 46 47 1 yr. Brudzinski, Bob 91 SLB SLB 9 56 56 5 yrs Bokamper, Kim 55 WLB WLB 9 48 48 1 yr.

Pretty thin here, but there should be enough talent in this group as long as they avoid injury.

Code:
Clayborn, Raymond 22 LCB 9 21 21 1 yr. McNeal, Don 44 LCB LCB 6 50 50 5 yrs Minnifield, Frank 35 LCB RCB 2 35 43 3 yrs Small, Gerald 33 RCB 8 32 32 2 yrs Blackwood, Glenn 41 SS SS 7 62 62 3 yrs ##Green, Alfred 47 SS 3 36 36 1 yr. Kozlowski, Mike 20 FS FS 7 52 52 2 yrs Kimbal, Romeo 42 FS 3 44 44 2 yrs Boucher, Burt 40 FS 3 41 47 1 yr.

I am in trouble at CB. Minnifield will likely get picked on quite a bit. He will need more than a little help from my decent Safety tandem.

We win all four preseason games and the offense looks sharp. Unfortunately, S Glenn Blackwood ruptured his achilles tendon and will be out for the season. This will really make our secondary situation shaky. Look for some high scoring games this season.

Week 1 - vs. Buffalo Bills

Marino had a slow start and the Dolphins had to punt on 34 of their first 4 possessions. Unfortunately, the pass defense was as miserable as expected. Jim Kelly threw TD passes on his first 3 drives, and the Bills led 31-7 at the half. A furious Marino rally put the Fins back into it, but it wasn't enough. Marino finished with 345 yards and 4 TD's, but Kelly had 4 Td's of his own and hit 33 of his 42 pass attempts.

Buffalo 37, Miami 29

Week 2 - vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

I think this may have been the highest scoring game I ever saw in FOF. Once again, Marino matched his opponent in TD passes, as both he and Doug Williams threw five of them. This time the Dolphins were able to get it done in the end, thanks to three outstanding drives by Marino in the 4th quarter. Dave Browning had a fumble return for TD at the start of the 3rd quarter that also proved to be crucial.

Final Score: Miami 58, Tampa Bay 42

Week 3 - vs. San Diego

These two teams have played some great games in recent years, and this looked like it could be another one. Two James Brooks TD's had the Chargers on top, but Marino hit Duper with a 43 yard TD pass at the half to take a 17-14 lead. Unfortunately, the Dolphins didn't show up for the 2nd half as the Chargers only allowed 140 total 2nd half yards on their way to a 28-20 victory. Marino had an off day, only connecting on 21 of his 41 attempts and throwing 2 INT's.

Week 4 - vs. New England Patriots

Somehow the Dolphins got to start the season with 4 straight home games. You'd hope for a better start to the season with that kind of scheduling. This one looked like another disappointment as New England took an early 14-0 lead after a TD run and a fumble return. Marino quickly brought them back with two TD passes to Tony Nathan, and the 2nd half was all Miami as the Pats QB Babe Laufenberg was unable to keep pace, even against the weak Miami secondary. Nathan had a terrific game with 199 total yards. With a quarter of the season done, Marino has 1327 yards, 14 TD's, and 3 INT.
