Dave Zilla Stables – A Simhorseracing.com dynasty
After reading kingfc’s dynasty detailed here, I was inspired to start my our racing stable over there. I am a complete newbie when comes to horse racing/betting/breeding but this looks like an interesting simulation and a vibrant community. I joined for my first season (Year 33) in May 2012.
The game gives you a $100K in cash to start and then feeds you another $150K over the next 10 weeks. Each year is 16 weeks and the game allows you to grow into it, giving special tracks and some financial advantages (lower vet costs, no daily horse fees) for first year players. Also, there are many veterans over there willing to help out a newbie. We’ll pick up at the start of Year 34 and I’ll try to give you a week by week chronicle. We’re running this as a virtual business, so while winning is a goal, managing the finances is more important. We want all our horses to turn a profit. We’ll also try to provide a quarterly financial statement after weeks 4, 8, 12 & 16. I hope you enjoy. |

Year 33 Recap
The inaugural year of Dave Zilla racing stables was a success. Our record on the track was 139: 15-20-17 resulting in $259,000 in purses. Highlights on the track included Division Belle getting the stable its first win in Week 1, and Diedre earning the first stakes win in the Week 11 “Pressure Stakes” at Trial park. We purchased 44 horses throughout the year for a total of $113,503 and sold 5 horses in claiming races for $73,500 in revenue. Operations returned $220,215 in profit and the stable end the year with $421,405 in the bank. We acquired 2 promising yearlings in the Dare-to-Dream program which we look forward to developing and racing. We also received a free mare lease which resulted in a filly. She will be ready to race in Year 35. Year 34 Goals and Expectations Our goals on the track are to get 25 wins and $500,000 in purse earnings. We are also shooting for 5 stakes wins. We will be employing a few new strategies in Year 34. First, we will be focusing in one or two areas of Thoroughbred racing, probably looking at Turf milers and Dirt milers. The idea is to get to know the pedigrees, the race tracks and the competition. Second, we will be looking for horses to claim in inexpensive claiming races early in the year to generate some additional cash flow. Third we will be searching for opportunities to place horses in “unfilled” races (races without at least 5 horses, the number places that earn purse money) to try to claim some easy money. We will also expand into some of the other classes of horses, particularly Standardbred Trotters. The breeding operation will be expanded slowly, probably only breeding a couple mares (if we can buy or lease them inexpensively). Financially, we would like to end the year with $350,000 in operating profit and $600,000 in the bank. |

Year 34 Week 1 Recap
We entered 13 horses in week 1. We don’t win any races but put 8 on the board for $19,680 in purses. We also claim two older but proven horses for $3,500 each. Race Record: 13: 0-3-5 Financial summary: Purses: $19,680 Expenses: $7,320 Bets: $10,000 (pick six – didn’t hit) Horse purchases: $7,000 Highlights: Temple Banquet, one of the Dare-to-Dream horses we won, debuts in a dirt sprint, but places 8th. He’s a miler, so this was poor race placement and we’ll continue training him until the mile races start in week 7. We already know his equipment so, this will just be race preparation training. Training: Our foal, who is a yearling now, gallops and is projected to have a productive career. It costs us $6,227 for the stud fee (the mare lease was free) to breed him last year. He will start workouts in week 5. I’m doing the first several weeks from memory, so they’ll have a little less detail. Last edited by dzilla77 : 11-19-2012 at 01:37 PM. |

Year 34 Week 2 Recap
We entered 8 horses in week 2 and pick up our first win of the year. We don’t place any other horses on the board, but we do win $11,800. Race Record: 8: 1-0-0 Financial summary: Purses: $11,800 Expenses: $7,130 Horse purchases: $2,300 Highlights: Alegre broke her maiden in her first race of the year. The 3yo outkicked 10 other horses in 5 furlong turf sprint $20,000 Maiden Special Weight race. She picked up $10,000 for the effort. We enter Wwe, a claimer, into the “Tx Turf Bred Sprint” stakes race. It only has 5 horses including ours and so our 5th place finish nets us $1,000. We also pick up a filler horse for an unfilled stakes race in week 3. This is part of our new strategy to try to claim unclaimed purse money. We’ll see how well it works. All in all, not a great week, but we are in the black for the week. Last edited by dzilla77 : 11-19-2012 at 01:38 PM. |

Year 34 Week 3 Recap
Week 3 is our best week in terms of earnings in the history of the stable. Thirteen horses were entered picking up 4 wins and $63,160 in purses. Race Record: 13: 4-2-2 Financial summary: Purses: $63,160 Expenses: $20,610 (we had an injury, more on this in the highlights) Horse sales: $5,000 (A Pillow of Winds was claimed) Highlights: Yaz entered the “Haunted Stakes” at Last Resort Park. Usually this park is a claiming park, but this race was sponsored by one of the players. This was a 1 miler on dirt with $50,000 in purse money up for grabs. The race was restricted to second year players. Yaz ran up front most of the race, took the lead at the ¾ pole and won by 2 ¾ lengths. He picks up our first stakes win (and a $25,000 check) of the year. All Bark raced at Pennsylvania Downs in the first race, a maiden special weight 6 furlong dirt sprint for colt & geldings which are 3yo or up. We tried a new equipment combination on him (a shadow roll and a tongue tie). He led from the start, started to fade at the finish but held off his rivals by 2 lengths to grab $5,000 in prize money. Blue Jays finally broke through with his first win for the stables. He was purchased last year for $12,500 with expectations that he would win some races. His 3yo campaign was a disappointment but he may have turned the corner in the 4th race at Junior High a 10 furlong dirt route claimer for 3yo and up. He was near the front for the entire race and outkicked Dostoyevsky for the win by 1.25 lengths. July Heat entered the 5th race at Junior High (a track only for second year players) which was a 8.5 furlong turf 3yo claiming race. She finished first of three horses to take home $7,500 in winnings. Lacey Underall was a filler race pick up to run in the unfilled $100,000 “Northwest Arkansas Mile,” a 1 mile (8 furlong) dirt stakes race for 4yo and up restricted to Arkansas breds. There were only 3 horses entered including her and a third place finish is worth $10,000. She finished 3rd (read last) and picked up the $10,000 check. However, she had also raced late in week 2 and ended up getting injured. The injury costs us $15,000 and put her our until late November. Good strategy, but poorly executed. Week 3 was a good week for us. I am a little disappointed that we failed to make money on our strategy with Lacey Underall (due to the injury). Last edited by dzilla77 : 11-19-2012 at 01:39 PM. |

Year 34 Week 4 Recap
Most horses require 3 weeks rest, so we will be running most of the horses we ran in week 1 this week. We entered 15 horses but only won $16,700 in prize money. A little disappointing compared to last week. We focused a lot of effort on finding some additional horses for our stables. We were given a collection of horses from one of the better Standardbred Trotter breeders and picked up a couple more at auction. We also find some interesting horses running in claiming races and put in a few claims. Race Record: 15: 1-1-3 Financial summary: Purses: $16,700 Expenses: $19,850 (we spent $10K to evaluate a new broodmare we were given) Horse purchases: $18,000 Horse Purchases: We purchased two Standardbred Trotters at auction for a total of $13,000. Standarbred Trotters are harness racers that run, er trot, 1 mile. This is a fairly competitive breed, but it is also a little easier to figure out the horses as there are only 5 pieces of equipment and one race distance. We also claim 4 turf milers for $5,000 total. Highlights: Not much in the way of highlights this week, but Fake Chow (I didn’t name her) picks up a win in a 7 furlong dirt claiming race for fillies & mares 3yo and up. She led wire to wire finishing strongly to win by 1 ¾ lengths to claim $5,000 in purse money. Captain Supremo, a claimer we got in week 1, finishes 3rd to start making back the $3,500 he cost us to claim. Hell or Highwater, another claimer we got in week 1, finishes 3rd to start making back the $3,500 he cost us to claim. A disappointing week on the track, but we are excited by our new horse acquisitions. Last edited by dzilla77 : 11-19-2012 at 01:39 PM. |

Dave Zilla Stables Financial Summary
1st Quarter Year 34 Revenue $116,340 Prize Money $111,340 Horse Sales $ 5,000 Expenses $102,210 Operational $ 54,910 Bets $ 20,000 Horse Purchases $ 27,300 Profit $ 14,130 Racing Record 49: 5-6-10 Win percentage 12% OTB percentage 42% Stakes wins 1 2yo wins 0 Horses 51 Racers 44 Yearlings 6 Broodmares 1 A pretty good first quarter of the season. We are running positive cash flow and have some exciting young horse which will race later in the year. We are still working on our strategy to focus our thoroughbred racers on one or two divisions (turf milers and dirt milers). We are starting to expand our stable in the other racing breeds, and hopefully we can notch our first win for the stable later in the year. |

Year 34 Week 5 Recap
We entered 15 horses this week, taking home $25,240 in prize money but we are shut out of the win column. Race Record: 12: 0-0-3 Financial summary: Purses: $25,240 Expenses: $10,500 Horse purchases: none Horse Purchases: None Highlights: We enter Alegre in the $70,000 “Texan Stakes,” a 5 furlong turf sprint for fillies and mares 3yo and up. She is competitive in this race and places to take $7,000 in purse money. Mission Approved is entered in the $100,000 “For A Song” dirt mile sponsored stakes for 4+ yo colts and geldings. This is another instance of filling an unfilled race to get some easy money. We finish 4th out of 4 horses but take home $7,000. Sapphira entered the $100,000 “Remember Regale” stakes at 8.5 furlongs on dirt. This sponsored race is restricted to Junior (second year) players and is another attempt to pick up some easy cash in an unfilled stakes race with a large purse. We finish 3rd out of 4 horses and walk away with $10,000. We didn’t win any races this week, but we managed to pull in $17,000 by entering unfilled races. We entered Alegre expecting her to be competitive and she didn’t disappoint. Last edited by dzilla77 : 11-19-2012 at 01:40 PM. |

Year 34 Week 6 Recap
A light racing card this week as we only enter 9 races, but we manage to win 2 of them. We pocket $32,520 for the effort. Race Record: 9: 2-0-1 Financial summary: Purses: $32,520 Expenses: $6,375 Horse purchases: None Horse Purchases: None Highlights: We entered July Heat into the $40,000 “Cool Breeze Stakes” at Junior High. The race is a 8.5 furlong turf route for 3+ yo fillies and mare. July Heat starts off 6th at the back of the pack but starts to make her move just past the midway point of the race. The call at the ¾ pole is Atlantic Mist (3 ¾), Alley Cat (nk), Kelpie (1) and July Heat. Down the stretch July Heat overtakes them all to win by a length to give the stable its second stakes win of the year (and her second win of the year). Blue Jays enters a 9 furlong dirt route claimer at Junior High. He breaks poorly and settles out in 3rd place. By the mid point he has moved up to second, 3 lengths behind Born to Serve and closing. By the ¾ pole Blue Jays has moved in front. Down the stretch he holds off a late rush by Effortless Cape as Born to Serve fades to fourth to capture his second win of the year and $10,000 in prize money. Our 2 wins account for most of the purse money we won for the week. Not a bad week for only entering 9 races. Last edited by dzilla77 : 11-19-2012 at 01:40 PM. |

Year 34 Week 7 Recap
We’ve got a heavy schedule in week 7 with 22 entries. We pick up 3 wins and $33,640 in purse money. Race Record: 22: 3-1-3 Financial summary: Purses: $33,640 Expenses: $11,010 Horse purchases: $89,532 Horse Purchases: We made a pretty substantial investment this week in Turf milers picking up 5 2 year olds at auction including 2 fillies. Four of the 5 horses have workouts that are in the top 5% and should do well in allowance and ungraded stakes races. In a couple of years the fillies should give us a decent breeding operation. In the meantime, we will be racing them and the boys starting in week 8. Highlights: South America, a recently acquired Standardbred Trotter entered the third race at the Maroon Mile. He started out in 10th and stayed there 9 lengths back through mid race, before starting to make his move. At the 34 pole he had moved into 7th in a race that had tightened up and then passed the field to nose out Penguin for his first win and a $6,000 purse. Our first foray into trotters is a success. We entered Fake Chow in a 7f dirt claimer at Price is Right Park. She led wire to wire beating out Crazy Chick by a length to claim $6,000 and her second consecutive win. San Tropez broke her maiden in dirt miler for 3+ year olds at Junior High to take home $10,000. Last edited by dzilla77 : 11-19-2012 at 01:41 PM. |

Dave Zilla Stables Financial Summary
2nd Quarter Year 34 Code:
The second quarter of Year 34, the stable started acquiring some 2yo turf milers. They raced in week 8 and have already started earning back their investment. We picked up our first two 2yo wins in the second quarter. We’ll be looking to make a couple more purchases later this year, but we are done spending a lot of money.
