Snakebit - OOTP 12 dynasty with the Atlanta Rattlesnakes

In this dynasty I will be following my attempt to turn around the miserable Atlanta Rattlesnakes organization into something like a contender. I have no interest in and will not be in charge of everyday management and game management, and will be letting the AI do that. I will only be in charge of things like the draft, trades, and maybe handling a bit of player signing. All of this will be taking place in a fictional OOTP 12 league which I just simmed for 30 years to provide some history. This league, the US Baseball Association, has two eight team divisions with the winners of each facing off for all the marbles. The Rattlesnakes are without doubt the worst team in the league and that is my new franchise.

In 30 years this team has never won the league championship, the Diamond Series, or even gone to the playoffs. In fact they have never finished higher than 3rd in their eight team division. Their fan interest is a horrible 28/100, by far the worst in the league – and the next lowest team has 45. Attendance is a major concern, with barely more than a million fans in the seats this year – and a few seasons ago they had less than a million, the lowest attendance in league history. Some owners might have considered moving the team somewhere more friendly, and a lot of people have suggested this, but owner Valentin Gonzalez has stood firm that the team can be saved. He's getting older now, and at 70 has decided to make one more attempt to turn the team around, hiring a brash young GM, Mack Carver. Gonzalez is a tightwad and a control freak but you can't question his commitment to his town, and his team. He wants to see us play .500 ball this year, but even this meager goal hasn't been reached by the Rattlers in ten years.

Let's see what Carver has to work with to start the season off in 2051.

Staff

Manager Jonah George is a huge asset for the team. George was a former right fielder who struggled to make the bigs, ending up playing a season or three with the Detroit Comets and other teams. On retirement, the work ethic and leadership skills he had shown made him a perfect fit for management. He managed for a couple of years for the A Durham Battalion, then became a pitching coach for twelve seasons with AA Chula Vista Brooks, in the Los Angeles Champions organization. It's not really known how the Rattlesnakes owner found him, but he did and offered him a job all the way at the top, the big leagues. George is a fantastic manager, ratings wise – he can handle rookie and veteran players, can teach hitting, fielding and pitching, all with Excellent or better skill, and mostly Legendary. He's been witht the Snakes for the past two seasons and seems pretty popular with the players.

The rest of the staff are not as sharp as George is – our bench coach is average at best, hitting coach Juan Rosa is pretty good at hitting but not so much when it comes to working with players. Pitching coach Keith Gaines, a former AAA pitcher, is solid, and trainer Victor Dominguez is great at healing legs but not so much the rest of the body.

Ballpark

Rattlesnakes Field is a nice place to play ball – it's a big open field with natural grass, that can seat 48,600 fans, though it hasn't done that in a while. 406 to center field, it has short porches in left and right (318/314,) leading to a lot of home runs going sailing out of the place – mostly by opposing players. It soaks up doubles and triples in the long run out to center, but overall is a hitter's park.

Roster

To start with, the last few seasons have provided high draft picks, so the Snakes have a good minor league system, including three of the top 20 prospects. Some of these guys are ready to go this year and should help things out a lot. The minor league organization includes the Triple A Chandler Lasers, Double A Colorado Springs Emissaries, single A West Islip Desperados, and rookie league Raleigh Bombardiers.

Starting Pitching Staff

Micheal Downing is a 28 year old second round pick who has been starting for the Rattlesnakes the last two seasons- he's a good player who has struggled to fit his pitching style to the Atlanta park – Downing can throw up to 100 mph, and he's got a wicked curveball, and great cutter and forkball. As a power pitcher, when he doesn't get batters out they have been smoking home runs off him – an insane 38 of them given up last season in an 11-11 year! The pitching coaches have him working on control – which will never be great but should lessen the home runs at least. Downing is their best pitcher and I expect a lot from him. He was just offered a one season extension which he should sign shortly.

Alfredo Escobar is a 22 year old rookie pitcher that the team has high hopes for – he was picked up in the second round in 2046 as a young prospect and looks to have paid off. The kid throws 97-99 mph, and has four solid pitches, the best being a changeup and slider, with a fastball, and a curve he is still working on. He won 15 games in AAA last year and is ready for the majors, but still has some development to do – especially in his control. He is the #17 prospect in the league.

Cesar Guillen is another prospect, a first round pick from 2046 – they brought him up to the Snakes two seasons ago in relief, then last year he was moved to starter. He throws in the mid 90s, and has a really great fastball and circle change. The problem is his third pitch, developed later in high school, which is an ok curveball. Good stuff, good movement, average control, with his two great pitches he should be able to do some great stuff. The Rattlesnakes have offered Guillen a two year contract extension.

Edgar Medina is a 23 year old from North Carolina – another first round pick from 2046. He has four pitches – fastball, slider, forkball, changeup, and all of them are average – solid but nothing special. The kid has good movement and control on his pitches but doesn't throw hard – 91-93 at best. Once he develops his control some more the pitching coach believes he will do some good in Atlanta.

Trevor Roberts is the 5th man – he was the 3rd overall pick in 2044 and was signed by Atlanta to a huge contract – he looked to be a franchise pitcher, but it was not to be. Injured early after signing with finger tendon problems, his pitching and his attitude have gone steadily south. He is the veteran of the rotation, and has started for the last 5 seasons. This is the final year of his contract and he won't be resigned. He's got an average fastball, slider and forkball, and good movement on his pitches but nothing special otherwise. He has never had a winning record.

Prospects: Emerson Flint is in Double A right now but shows promise of a very nice fastball and cutter. The kid is only 19 and needs a lot of development though. The Snakes traded for him a couple of years ago from the Boston Vandals – he's the #52 prospect overall. Duane Myers is an average looking 25 year old in AAA – looks to be a decent backup for an injured pitcher. Wow, the new development screen kicks ass!

Bullpen

This bullpen was pretty bad the last few years but as with the rotation, it has quite a few young guys who may turn out good.. It's rated the worst in the league last year. . The best pitcher is reliever Robinson Sanchez – he was pretty solid for the team last year amid a bunch of disappointment. Bob Huff is a 22 year old with an excellent sinker and circle change – he could be the star of the pen if his control develops. Flamethrowing South Korean Chang-hoon Song can throw over 100 mph and has a lethal fastball and curveball – but his control is suspect. Still, you can't beat last year's performance – 2 IP, 6 strikeouts. Jim Coffman is a decent long relief guy as well as a spot starter. Closer Steve Mills was a bright spot as setup man last year- 23 years old, he's got a sharp fastball and change, and good movement.

Prospects: 22 year old closer Carlos Sandoval is in AAA but looked sharp closing in AA last year – good fastball, good splitter, very good movement. Southpaw Jason Palmer is only 21 but has already been traded twice – the Snakes got him from the Detroit Comets. He looks like he could be a great long reliever and an occasional starter. Good movement and potentially excellent control.

Batters

Last year's star hitter was catcher Ralph Sanders – he was an All-Star and knocked in more than 100 runs. Unfortunately he's now gone – signed with the Cleveland Senators for a four year, $30 million contract. Trying to replace him this year is Andres Delgado – brought in in a trade from the Mesa Wildcats after Sanders left. Delgado is a really good defensive catcher, and a reliable hitter – he won't hit home runs but has consistently delivered around a .270 average. Backing him up is young 2nd round pick out of California, Frank Howard – he is Delgado's opposite – pretty bad defensively, but can hit with good power.

First baseman Pedro Cortez was acquired in a trade last year from the Dallas Wildfires – the Snakes gave up a really nice closer prospect but Cortez looks to be really good also – he's a fantastic pure contact hitter, and hit .351 for Atlanta last year after the trade – this guy could really shine. Backing him up is prospect Nate Miller – picked up from Cleveland last year in a trade, he's rated as the #51 prospect in the league but has a long way to go to take Cortez's job.

At second base is Francisco Jaramillo – a strong defensive player who can play second and short equally well. He's also dangerous on the basepaths and is a switch hitter – a perfect leadoff hitter.

Shortstop Jim Stuart is the best defensive player on the team – a 10th overall pick in 2048, he can play excellent defense at any position in the infield. He's still developing as a hitter but looks solid there, plus he's got some speed. Utility infielder Steve Gentry is backup to Jaramillo and Stuart- he's a solid defender with good speed and average hitting.

At third base is the team's phenom, rookie Javier Gonzales. 1st overall pick in 2049, Gonzales is rated the #3 prospect in the league and looks to have a very bright future. He played in AA last year, but shows so much promise he was brought up. What doesn't this kid have – good contact hitting, great power and gap hitting, a good eye and he doesn't strike out much. He's also excellent with the glove, can steal bases, and can hit from both sides of the plate. The Rattlesnakes management believe this is the guy that's going to be a big part of turning them around. Jacob Watson is backing Gonzales up – he has started for Atlanta for the past two years and is a pretty good hitter with some power, and good range.
Outfielder Edgardo Duran is a team veteran and probably the most popular guy on the team. He's been starting for Atlanta for 10 seasons now, is a six-time All-Star and the fans just love him. He's also the most highly paid player, and at 34 is fading a bit but can still get the job done. Good contact hitter with some power and a cannon arm from the outfield.

Slugging right fielder William Sharp was a first round pick in 2048 and is the team's best power hitter – smashing 40 home runs last season. He's only average in the field and will strike out, but as long as he keeps hitting home runs no one cares.

Another young outfielder, John Inman also has a lot of power, but is a free swinger and has trouble making contact – when he does, watch out! If he can get more consistent in his hitting he will be a bigtime player.

Tim Moreton has been playing for the team for several years- he is a good contact hitter and a good solid defender. He can play all over the field and will be a good backup.

Ross Robinson is another utility outfielder – good hitter, solid defender, and he's fast as well – will steal some bases.

Prospects: Catcher Doug Rutherford looks very good – he is the #12 prospect in the league. He is a fantastic defensive catcher, has a great arm, and looks like he will have all the tools at the plate. The only worry is he is already 24 and still hasn't developed to a major league level. First basement Elliot O'Donnell is showing some good power and may have a shot at the bigs at some point. Outfield Lorenzo Barajas has great speed, but his hitting is suspect.

The Rattlesnakes have started off the season quite well – they are 18-14 and currently 3rd in the Eastern Division. The Detroit Comets are leading the ED at 20-12 and the Albuquerque Roughriders (one of the best random team names I've ever seen) are leading the Western at a blistering 23-9 pace. 1st baseman Pedro Cortez is hitting up a storm – currently second in the league with a .440 average. Will Sharp is leading the team with 7 homers and 24 RBI. Javier Gonzales is hitting .370 so far in his rookie season, and the pitching rotation is looking quite good so far.

June 16th, 2051

The Snakes have fallen to fourth place in the Eastern but are still playing over .500 ball at 39-32. The Baltimore Armadillos now lead the division at 45-26, and Albuquerque leads the West at 42-29. Pedro Cortez continues to drive the ball incredibly well – he is leading the league now and hitting .397. Willi am Sharp has 16 home runs and 49 RBIs to lead the team. Starter Cesar Guillen is stunning everyone with his strong pitching – he is currently 9-2 and one of the best starters in the league. 5th man Trevor Roberts is 6-3 and Micheal Downing has a 3.92 ERA and is 5th in the league in strikeouts. These young players are really coming along and this team looks nothing like last year's Snakes team. Fan interest is already back up to 45 and we have more than doubled average home game attendance from last year.

Meanwhile, the most dominant pitcher in the league, Oscar “Mountain Man” Hunt, is 11-0 on the year with a 1.08 ERA. His nickname is especially appropriate since he plays for the Denver Mountains.

In the amateur draft, Atlanta had the #2 pick, and scored some excellent players. 1st round pick was one of the only two great starting pitchers – Jorge “Jester” Castillo. This 18 year old from Colorado doesn't throw hard, but looks like he will be something special in movement and control if he develops. The second round pick was Venezualan outfielder Emanuel Firmino – a power hitter with good contact as well, good speed, and average defense. Outstanding relief pitcher Jason Ricks was the third pick, and fifth round pick reliever Wilson Heredia looks like he could help our bullpen as well.

A sad day in the history of Rattlesnakes baseball. The team owner, Valentin Gonzalez, has died. He worked long and hard to turn around the Snakes team and now he is dead just when the team is showing some signs of life. His son, Randy, will now take over as owner. From Mack Carver's talk with him, it looks like he is willing to be a lot more freehanded with money and less controlling than his father – also he is ecstatic about how the team is performing!

The Snakes remain in fourth place at 47-44. Pedro Cortez continues to hit the daylights out of the ball, and is still leading the league at .392. Cesar Guillen is now 11-2 and is third in wins in the entire league. The team had several All-Stars this year – Guillen, Cortez, outfielder Ross Robinson, and closer Steve Mills who has 18 saves and a 3.03 ERA.

July 31st, 2051

The Rattlesnakes made a big splash on the Internet when they signed a trade deal with the Detroit Comets. The Comets get utility infielder Steve Gentry, who had played quite a few games for Atlanta, but the Snakes get star outfielder Miguel Reyes – it's a great deal for Atlanta, as Reyes is a great contact hitter with fantastic running speed and good fielding. They will take that deal any day.

August 15th, 2051

Atlanta is still playing better than .500 ball, and remains in fourth place – currently they are 66-58. The Detroit Comets and Albuquerque Roughriders lead their divisions, each with a 73-51 record. Pedro Cortez is still the league's top hitter and William Sharp is one of the best power hitters in the league. Attendance at Rattlesnakes Park is already over 1.5 million, and could reach close to 2 by the time the season is over. Plus the owner will make a healthy profit.

The roster expansion has arrived and some of our minor leaguers may get a shot at some playing time now. Atlanta is currently in 5th place and has a 73-66 record. William Sharp is the second best slugger in the league so far – second in home runs with 35 and third in RBIs with 99. Pedro Cortez continues to hit well but has fallen off a bit – third in the league at .347. Cesar Guillen is 16-4 and shows no signs of slowing down. 2nd baseman Jim Stuart leads the team in hits and Atlanta has been fending off trade offers for him all season.

October 2nd, 2051

The Rattlesnakes first season under Mack Carver is now over – they finished it out at exactly .500 – 84-84, and finished 5th in the Eastern. This year has to be considered a great one for the organization – they excited the fan base, more than doubling fan interest and attendance from last year, and a lot of their young team really showed what they can do.

The Detroit Comets and Albuquerque Roughriders will be playing in the Diamond Series this year- the Denver Mountains won an impressive 101 games but finished two back of the Roughriders. In the end though it was the Comets winning it all with a four game sweep.

In terms of awards, Mountain Man Hunt of the Denver Mountains picked up the Jack Calhoun Award for best pitcher – finishing off with a devastating 24-2 record and 1.44 ERA. This is Hunt's second Calhoun but probably not his last.

Outfielder Bob James of the Los Angeles Champions picked up the prestigious Golden Lion award for best hitter – he hit .326 with 35 homers and 107 RBIs, and led the league in extra base hits and total bases.

Though Javier Gonzales was in the running, the Silversmith Award for rookie of the year went to 2nd baseman Ed Holland of the Brooklyn Bears.

Meanwhile, in a reminder of what can happen at a failing club, the worst team in the league was the Dallas Wildfires – after the season the owner wiped the slate clean – axing the GM and the manager.

Here's what the team stats looked like for the 2051 season. Pedro Cortez was the leading hitter on the team at .350 but because he was on the DL at the end of the season he's not shown at the top of the page.

As you can see, we were the top hitting team in the league this year, in average and total hits, but our pitching was one of the worst in the league.

Offseason 2051

Time to take a look at the team – we started out with several players being offered arbitration salaries for next season. I also offered multiple season extensions to Pedro Cortez, William Sharp, Miguel Reyes, and John Inman to get some of my main guys locked down for the future – currently waiting to see if they will all sign but it's looking good. I also re-signed reliever Jim Coffman and a couple of other minor players to prevent them from leaving the tema.

We also made a trade with the New Orleans Chariots – we're going to be bringing hot prospect catcher Doug Rutherford to the majors next year, and keeping solid starter from this year Andres Delgado – this left backup catcher Frank Howard as the odd man out, and I was able to broker a deal with New Orleans for capable relief pitcher Adrian Flores. If the worst happens, we've still got solid minor leaguer Pat Castle and another guy in the system for emergency backup.

Free agency opened up on 11/02/2051 – our new owner has pried open the coffers a bit and given us $18 million for free agents – we're quite happy with that amount. We also have a lot available for extensions but most of our young players are pretty cheap. Mack Carver has made it clear that he wants a starting pitcher, and there are several good ones, but do the Snakes want to blow all their money on one guy? The best options are Pat King and Fernando Cruz – both are top 10 pitchers, and King has back to back 18 win seasons. Unfortunately both want a ton of money and long contracts, and both are getting kind of old. Cruz is the better option for the Snakes – he's a control guy, with a great groundball percentage, and our rotation really needs a guy like that. Unfortunately he wants a 5 year deal at 16 million per year, and he's already 34.

Ultimately Carver decided to go with neither option – instead we would approach two of the solid, second tier pitchers (three star guys) who would be upgrades to our current pitchers and would be cheap. We made offers to Mike “Major” Burke, formerly of the LA Champions, and Derrick Howell, formerly of the Boston Vandals. If they sign, we will get two solid pitchers for $6 million a year total, upgrade our staff, and still have some more room. We also made an offer to standout relievers Ray Jackson and Pierre-Jean Dumont. Fortunately for us, all of these players accepted, and we have really improved the Rattlesnake starting rotation and bullpen for next year, and all for about $9 million this season.

We also picked up solid looking reliever Jonathon Morris in the Rule 5 draft, from the Brooklyn organization.

In staff news, longtime hitting coach Juan Rosa left the team – we'll need a replacement for him, and maybe an upgrade somewhere else as well. I checked out the available hitting coaches, and found a steal – Kenneth Harrison is a former minor leaguer with a fantastic swing and a great attitude. Well-liked by everyone, he's a terrific hitting coach and knows just how to handle every kind of player. He was moldering away as a single A head coach before, but now should improve our team. We also looked for a new trainer and after a few months of searching found Tomas Gomez, an all around excellent trainer who is especially good with arms, and signed him.

Offseason 2052

Things were pretty quiet for the team after the New Year. Mostly just preparation and making sure who would make the final roster. We tried to increase our frankly terrible player development budget but it looks like after our new signings and extensions, the ownership doesn't have the cash.

Once spring training started, it was good to see our guys work as a unit again. Mack did get one painful bit of news – promising reliever Jason Ricks is out for two months with a sprained ankle. Then news came of catcher Andres Delgado out for a month with a shoulder issue. It looks like hot prospect Doug Rutherford will start for the Snakes at catcher on Opening Day. We picked up a backup catcher named Terry Johnson to backstop Rutherford, as our catchers aren't really ready for the bigs, defensively.

The exciting news was how the team played in Spring Training – Atlanta finished in second place in the Eastern with a 15-9 record. Reyes, Sharp, and Gonzales all hit super well.

Opening Day, 2052

Our starting rotation will be Cesar Guillen/Derrick Howell/Mike Burke/Micheal Downing/Alfredo Escobar. Escobar may move up if he shows some good performances. Howell has really developed in the offseason since he was picked up and is really close to a four star pitcher now, with a great cutter, good curve, and average changeup. He has the total package when it comes to stuff/movement/control, also. Mike Burke is very good as well, equally solid, and has four good pitches – fastball, splitter, curve, and changeup. I'm looking forward to what they can do.

In the bullpen, new acquisition Pierre-Jean Dumont will be our closer. He's a Canadian who throws hard, and has a devastating sinker and curve. New pickup Ray Jackson will be our #1 middle reliever, with current guys Robinson Sanchez, Bob Huff, and Chang-Hoon Song. Rule 5 draftee Jonathon Morris will be our mop-up guy and former closer Steve Mills will be the setup man (along with Ricks when he returns.)

The batting lineup is pretty much the same as last year, except for rookie catcher Doug Rutherford. I expect to see Francisco Jaramillo playing more, and if they do well we might see one of our top draft picks from last season show up for a cup of coffee (especially Emanual Firmino.)

By the time the rookie draft pool is revealed, the Snakes are playing average ball, there are some really bright spots and some players who have disappointed so far. Overall they are 21-22 and fourth in their division, which is led by the Baltimore Armadillos at this point. The Mesa Wildcats are leading the Western Division. So far our hitting and pitching from last year seem to have switched places – our hitting is mostly terrible this year – our batters have struck out more than any other, our team average is 13th in the league, and we are last in extra-base hits. Pedro Cortez is hitting .342 but hardly anyone else is breaking the .300 mark. Our pitching has turned around, though our starters are having trouble winning games – Cesar Guillen continues to pitch well in terms of his numbers, but is 1-7. I have moved Derrick Howell up to the #1 slot because of his excellent ERA and WHIP so far. The bullpen is the bright spot – we have the third best pen in the league and new closer Pierre-Jean Dumont has been fantastic, in 15 appearances and 16.2 IP he has struck out 21, saved 10, and given up only 1 earned run.

Hopefully our hitting will kick in and we can start making a move up the divisional ladder.

June 15th, 2052

We've been having trouble with Edgardo Duran – former star and popular player, now 35 year old average player who is anchoring us down with a large contract. He's playing terribly, constantly complaining that he isn't starting, and is being paid more than twice as much as the next guy on our team. We tried to shop him around, but no one wanted him. Meanwhile we have been getting a barrage of trade offers, all lousy – until Mack Carver got the call from the Cleveland Senators. They want Duran to fill a hole in their outfield, and they are also short of cash, so they want us to send them $3 million in the deal. In return we will get a 2nd round draft pick (3rd) and they wanted to send us a decent catcher. I convinced them to send me rookie outfielder John Wilson instead – he's not doing much now but projects to have fantastic power and good contact hitting. Deal done! We knew the fans wouldn't be happy, and they are very upset, but Duran was causing too many problems. We wasted no time in signing Wilson to a two year extension as he is in the last year of his rookie contract.

In other good news, we have been playing some really good ball lately and are now third in the division at 39-31. Pedro Cortez is third in hitting in the league at .342, John Inman has 20 home runs, tied for second in the league, and closer Dumont continues to be fantastic, now second in the league with 20 saves. Derrick Howell and Alfredo Escobar are leading our staff at 5-3 and 6-4, and Guillen has won a couple more games as well.

The Rookie Draft, 2052

We were in good shape for the draft even before the trade, with first round picks at #6 and #10, and now we have #3 and 9 picks in the second round as well. The first overall pick by the Dallas Wildfires is starter Jose Rodriguez, which is a really odd pick as there seem to be much better pitchers on the board, but instead they grab a two star potential guy. We pick up shortstop Jose Sousa with our first pick – he's only 17 but should be a good hitter with very good power, solid defensively, with some speed – but he'll take plenty of development. We took excellent relief pitcher Carlos Silva with our second first round pick – he's 21 and is ready to go in the majors already. Our next pick at 2(3) is Jose Garcia – good hitting third baseman – we'll see how he develops. Our next pick is another reliever, Tony Tillman – he's young but has a great fastball and slider. We continue with Carl Mason, a hot-hitting and very fast second baseman. Rounding our the draft are a pair of starters, Gerardo Wilhelm and John Young, and right fielder Jeff Hunt.

At this point we are rated as having the best minor league system in the league – mostly because of last year's phenoms Emanual Firmino (1st rated prospect) and Jorge Castillo (5th.)
