FOF8 Dynasty - Restore the Roar! Lions Empty Cupboard and Draftees Only

Hello folks!

I hope that you are having an awesome day today! I wanted to take on a challenge that I had never attempted before. I checked to see if the next FOF was coming out anytime soon, and the latest update over at OOTP is no. Right now, best guess is late Summer or Fall.

So let’s do my challenge now!

What I am aiming to do with this dynasty is simple. I want to marry the traditional FOFC empty cupboard challenge with the idea that I can only use players that I draft.

Now a lot of players will use the empty cupboard concept of dumping their team and cash in order to start afresh. They’ll bring in free agents they can sign and then build up from draft and FA over time. That’s a fun way to play!

I don’t just want to do that.

Here are the rules for my dynasty, with the various caveats below.

1. I will cut every player currently on the team I select

2. I am not a coach, just a GM. I will not set up game plans, calls plays, or such. That is not my role.

3. I will never sign a player in free agency
a. With these potential exceptions
i. If I need a player on my roster due to injuries during the season.
ii. If I need a specialist that is not otherwise available, such as a long snapper.
iii. I am allowed to resign someone who is officially one of “My Guys”. See below
iv. I am allowed, and encouraged, to sign undrafted Free Agents. See below.

4. I will only draft and sign Undrafted free agents as the exclusive method of player acquisition for my roster. I will not trade for, or sign someone.
a. Once I have brought someone into my squad, there are one of My Guys, and I can always bring back one of my guys in a later free agency period.
i. For example. Suppose I have three solid OTs. I can’t keep them, so I let the 4th year one go in free agency. Three years later, one of my OTs has just retired, and there in the FA pool is my old one starting back at me. I can resign him to my club. He’s one of my people!
ii. I should aim to resign my people without letting them go into FA.
iii. I will try to keep draft manipulation to a minimum. If someone offers me a trade, sure!
iv. Within these rules, I am free to do whatever I want. Franchise tag? Sure! They are my people afterall!

5. I am going to fast sim the first season, and then cut everyone. We are using the real player file, real coaches, I am definitely fire-able

6. I am going to have a realistic slate of coaches, and not just let folks go because better ones are available. I will stick with a winning coach, or coordinator.

Ready?

Let’s kick this thang off!

I want to choose one of the losingest franchise of all time – The Browns. I had the Browns in a previous dynasty, the Otto Graham challenge, and did very well with them. But they are in a good place now and are looking up, and I recently did them.

Who else? Bengals? Lions? Jets? Bucs?

Lions or Jets feel like useful picks. The Lions are older, lose a lot, in a tough division with the rising Bears, powerful Vikings and Packers, and have had some really bad seasons recently. Two of your three best players are your K and P in my check in to see how rosters were doing when I created a quick little game. The Jets are historically bad, but have had some good moments when they won some championships, and they have the strong Sam Darnold to help put them back on the map.

I’m choosing the Lions for this dynasty!

My starting options include fireable, X factor on, chemistry on, no level playing field, no draft. I decrease cap increase to much less and much more to make it less random, and I also have 125 injuries and 50 combine accuracy is fine, I keep it.

Who Am I?

Albert D’Avingon

(Pronounced like it’s French, Al-bear not Al-bert and with the French swallowed language at the end like you don’t matter enough to the speak to get the rest of the word).

Let’s quick sim my season:

We finish the preseason a scintillating 1-3.

We finish 5-11 on the season – I had to IR three people

We are 4th in our division with the Packers, Vikings, and Bears. The Packers have the 4 seed. They win week 1 and then lose to the Seahawks.

Playoffs – KC Beats Seattle 36-30 in the Super Bowl

We didn’t have any All Pros

Marvin Jones was the 15th best receiver in yards with 1148. I had no major sacks, although my starting S Quandre Diggs notched four picks. Those were the only highlights in the 5-11 season

Next season

Staff draft

I select a new head coach and fire Matt Patricia. He is horrible.

Meet my new coach – Ken Norton, Jr the Seattle DC.

Jim Bob Cooter ain’t bad. But I like OC Butch Weary a little better

My D Coord is very good. But there is a hoss out there that was just let go and I snag him – Dave Taub, previous DC of the Chiefs and just let go by them. I hire Lincoln Bauman as my Asst. Coach and Willie Reynolds at Str coach.

We begin free agency. I cut every Lion.

I have used up more than 60 mill in cap space this year. Not that it matters.

I skip to the draft

Now we have a strong first rounder at the 3 spot, and then we drop to 7, and then rise to 3.6, 4.5, 5.4, 6.3 and 7.7.

If I really wanted to push my roster building, I could trade my 1.3 for a bunch of lower picks and stock up! But this is my chance to get a quality player like a QB for my club. Plus I don’t want to try and break the game. Slow down my draft trades.

I interview talent I think will be available for my first three rounds. I also interview a QB to see if I can find one. We don’t have an amazing QB but if we did, he’d likely go before us anyway.

Draft Time!

The 2019 Amateur NFL Draft

Buffalo has the first pick;

1.1 QB KC Fiefa – the only good one, goes to a team that has Allen, who was a draft bust. I was hoping he’d fall to me.
1.2 Tampa- OT Isaac Rossum – I was also looking at him as my 3rd pick if Fiefa was taken as he is the best player and he feels very Tony Bosselli – grab the generational OT and then never look back!

Who do I want?

We had two stud RBs that looked amazing both came back very overrated.

I can draft anything here. I want to mostly BAP as I have no one on my squad I can take the best DE who’s as scouted, CB who’s nasty. The other QBs are overrated and very overrated and don’t even have good bars. No WR is here. The RBs suck.

Gotta go D. CB or DE?

CB Bucky Pujols

Round 2

2.7 arrives. Again, I can do anybody here. I grab DE Briggs.

In the 3rd my last interviews just left. Hmm… I go QB Carson Griffith

SLB Drew Monroe looks really nice in the 4th. Maybe even a steal at this point of the draft

MLB Xavier Donley looks the same int eh 5th. I know it’s weird going two LBs there, but that’s the talent.

CB Glenn Sapello in the 6th, and again, I know it looks weird to o CB twice, but that appears to be where the talent was

WR joey Douglas finishes us!

Alright, let’s look at our firs tdraft class!

We got the lowest draft grade in the class

I sign an epic amount of UFAs. Including 8 QBs

Here are my drafted rookies heading into camp:

CB Pujols – 47/67
DE Briggs – 29/49
QB Griffith – 13/45
LB Monroe – 26/68
LB Donley – 37/64
CB Sapello – 13/41
WR Douglas – 24/35

Alright, we’ll see where we are post-camp!

CB Pujols – 47/67 – 52/66
DE Briggs – 29/49 – 32/47
QB Griffith – 13/45 – 16/46
LB Monroe – 26/68 – 32/71
LB Donley – 37/64 – 44/61
CB Sapello – 13/41 – 16/39
WR Douglas – 24/35 – 24/34

CB Pujols is our only player on the Green Page. I am running a 3-4 to emphasize my decent LBs I grabbed in the mid rounds days.

Well that’s promising for Monroe although I was hoping that Donley would stick as well

Preseason!

We go 0-4

Post Preseason:

CB Pujols – 47/67 – 52/66 – 52/61
DE Briggs – 29/49 – 32/47 – 34/45
QB Griffith – 13/45 – 16/46 -16/48
LB Monroe – 26/68 – 32/71 – 33/71
LB Donley – 37/64 – 44/61 – 45/60
CB Sapello – 13/41 – 16/39 – 18/33
WR Douglas – 24/35 – 24/34 – 25/32

I cut 6th round pick Sapello

The best news is that Griffith may be a riser, and the worst is that Pujols is going in the wrong direction, as are Briggs, Sapello, Douglas and Donley.

Any amazing booms?

I sorted it by potential. You can see that I have a few solid players who did well in training camp:

FL Mike Baxter
CB Luis Hanks
LG Charlie Montpolo
RT Rickey Small
DE Asher Brandon
RB Joe Duncan

I’ll be interested in seeing where we end up at the end of the year with their development.

My K busted. We have no other options until next year

Pujols is off the Green Page.

QB Fiefa was 38/63 and looks solid. OT Rossum is 39/83. Those were the two I was looking at. The DE I was considering as well was 39/69. We missed a crap ton of talent because I had to push for a QB somewhere in this draft.

For example, at the 2.7 spot, I could have grabbed a RT that went 2.8 that is 44/69. TE Dixon Robinson went 2.10 and is 34/71. You get the idea.

This draft was about LB and QB, hopefully, for the future.

We’ll see!

I will fast sim much of this season as I doubt we’ll be anything near competitive:

First four games -

We lose bad, win week 3 19-3 over the Cards, then lose and go 1-3.

Next four games –

We lose 2x, and beat the Bears 26-19 in Week 7. We surprise the Packers and win 24-21 at Week 8 and finish 3-5.

Next four games –

We lose to the Chiefs, Skins Vikings, and Panthers. 3-9

Last Quarter –

We lose 3 and then finish with a Bears win 24-23.

We finish the season 4-12.

“So tell me again how this works. How does a team that finished 5-11 with a lot of talent that had players that were professionals, veterans, and more turn around, and then the next year, with 6 drafted rookies and the rest undrafted free agents manage just one fewer win? The Lions were 4-12 this season, and that’s just an incredible feat when you think about it!

You know what they say Steve. Any given Sunday!”

No Awards.

2019 Stats

Major stats of notice –

CB Pujols led team with 3 picks

LB Donley led with 15 PasDef

DE Briggs led with 5.5 sacks.

LB Donley led with 137 solo tackles and 58 assists. He led the league in tackles. 3 sacks, 1 pick, 3 forced fumbles, 1 recovery,

No one had more than 14 Key un blocks

My RBs had no more than 600 yards total.

QB Griffith wasn’t good. 8 TDs:11 Ints, 61.9 rating, etc

Baxter was targeted 109 time but only had 610 yards.

WR Malone grabbed us a KR TD in the 2nd Bears game that got us a win

Good job!

I’m not going to really do a lot of team awards or anything either.

Hello 2020!

The Raiders are now playing in Vegas

Post season look at my rookies:

CB Pujols – 47/67 – 52/66 – 52/61 – 58/61
DE Briggs – 29/49 – 32/47 – 34/45 – 43/45
QB Griffith – 13/45 – 16/46 -16/48 – 20/48
LB Monroe – 26/68 – 32/71 – 33/71 – 55/71
LB Donley – 37/64 – 44/61 – 45/60 – 59/60
CB Sapello – 13/41 – 16/39 – 18/33 - CUT
WR Douglas – 24/35 – 24/34 – 25/32 – 25/32

So as you can see, while 5th rounder Donley fell a bit, he’s coalescing at 60, which is stilt great. And he played lights out with tackles, coverage and such. I like Monroe and Donley moving forward. You can see that Pujols is the same, getting close to 60. Not what I wanted for a 1.3, but at least he’s not a bust, and that’s fine.

In Griffith we hope!

Staff Draft!

The only change I make is that I grab a much better strength coach

2020 Offseason Free agency –

I have no agents, duh

I have a ton of RFAs

I re-sign almost everyone!

I will be going into the draft with 40 players

I have the 1.3, 2.3 picks. The Bills finished 2-14 and the Cards 3-13, so our 4-14 is the 3rd worst record.

I interview folks at the top Safeties, RBs, QB, OT, and even a TE who looks studly but isn’t, with the intention of targeting folks in the first 3 rounds.

The 2020 Amateur NFL Draft -

Draft time!

1.1 Buffalo takes a stud DE at 1.1
1.2 Cards takes Stud OT at 1.2

And that leaves me with a big option

Stud RB? S?

Or Teddy Himes

Top QB on the board, although just rated 5.1 by them.

Very underrated after interviewing him

I grab him

QB Teddy Himes

2nd round is here!

Who do I like?

NT Bernard Doyle. Second best player on the board, we interviewed him as hard to read, has 4 blue scores

3rd round?

C BJ Meyer, the 2nd C is still on the board and I snag him. We interviewed him as underrated and I was targeting him here.

SS Walt Finger in the 4th

OG Luis Dehning – appears to be a steal based on bars, but has lower combines

LB Deion Kalter

DE Derek Franklin

There we go!

I think Dehning is a show-er that’ll drop but he looks to have good bars

Coming out of the draft, Hims is on the Green Sheet. We have a B rating and are middle of the pack

Early rookie lookie:

Qb Himes – 22/58
NT Doyle – 35/56
C Meier - 19/71
SS Finger -27/48
OG Luis Dehning – 15/59
LB Kalter – 26/54
DE Franklin – 27/50

Not bad if Himes and Meier can improve based on our interviews.

This time I have a more targeted approach to UFAs. – just 14 are made offers.

I sign folks like P Newman, CB Maurer, FS Lyons, and we go into camp with 61 on my roster

Camping Fun Times Commence!

Post camp rookies

Qb Himes – 22/58 – 28/58
NT Doyle – 35/56 – 40/56
C Meier - 19/71 – 24/73
SS Finger -27/48 – 30/41
OG Luis Dehning – 15/59 – 23/69
LB Kalter – 26/54 – 30/51
DE Franklin – 27/50 – 31/51

Well lets look!

Dehning is clearly not just a shower who drops, but a grower. Wow! Meier is as expected, and Doyle probably as well. Kalter is dropping and Franklin may ne too. Finger is a big ol’ bust, and Himes hasn’t moved. So far, seems like things are okay. But we all know that post Preseason is when we really get a better chance.

Oh, and my rookies from last year?

CB Pujols – 47/67 – 52/66 – 52/61 – 58/61
DE Briggs – 29/49 – 32/47 – 34/45 – 43/45

Our draftees:

Qb Himes – 22/58 – 28/58 – 29/65
NT Doyle – 35/56 – 40/56 – 44/56
C Meier - 19/71 – 24/73 – 26/74
SS Finger -27/48 – 30/41 – 32/40
OG Luis Dehning – 15/59 – 23/69 – 26/79
LB Kalter – 26/54 – 30/51 – 30/49
DE Franklin – 27/50 – 31/51 – 32/52

See our OG just continuing to break people. My two best players are a 5th rounder and a 4th rounder! Well and C Meier too, so 3RD too. Right now on the Green Page, Himes and Dehning are making an appearance

Himes is clearly my chosen one at QB and has won our camp and preseason vs Griffith.

As for UFas, my best ones are RB Mel Gavin, CB Maurer, although he was the top rated UFA on everyone’s board he didn’t boom, LB Jacobs

So are you ready?

Again, I expect us to struggle. My guess is we finish between 4-6 wins.

We’ll fast sim this season as well

First quarter –

0-4

Second –

We get our first win against Carolina in week 8 31-13.

1-7

Third

Week 9 Green Bay has to beat us in ot.

Week 11 the Colts barely beat us 30-37.

Week 12 – We defeat the Cards in our place.

2-10

Final Quarter

Week 14 – We beat the 7-5 Texans in our place 28-24

I toss Donley on IR and sign a bum off the street

Week 15 – We blow out Chicago 27-7

We lose to and then beat GB 14-11 in their home when they had to win to make the playoffs

Noise!

“ And again? How does a team with two years of rookies have the same record they had two years ago when they had a real team? The Lions look like a team on the rise that are building exclusively via the draft. GM D’Avignon mentioned in his first press conference that to build a long term winner you couldn’t bring in other team’s castoffs, but instead build from the ground up. Impressive start!”

The 2021 Amateur NFL Draft -

1.1 San Francisco grabs the stud QB of course.

I can get anyone else I desire. I go with a stud-like D Lineman, and the top player on the board by far after QB went. He’s Hard to Read though.

DL Ricardo Whittle

The second round arrives. Hmmm

The Safety I was eyeing here went 32 to the Saints. I grab S Sam Norton who is the best left, but I didn’t scout him, but his combines and bars seem pretty solid

WR Pete McPherson in the 3rd is the best and I need to invest in my catchers of balls.

OT Abel Brady looks interesting with solid bars and combines.

ILB Arnold Drury has good bars, but wasn’t invited to the combine – that’s a gamble

He’s down on the chart by a bunch, but WR Ethan Gardner is the same, no combines, but good bars. I grab him on a flyer in the 6th round

7th? Hmmm… SS Peter Miceli is the same. No combine scores, great bars

Alright

Rookie Lookies

DE Whittle – 53/80 –
S Sam Norton – 26/61
WR McPherson – 29/49
OT Abel Brady – 20/58
ILB Drury – 20/64
WR Gardner – 31/53
S Miceli – 26/55

There we are

Whittle is the top player on the Green Sheet

I have a trade offer of a 4th rounder for QB Griffith. No thanks

We have a C- grade

Late FA Begins

I have 54 players under contract

There is a Cb with 60s potential I make an offer for in UFA with a bonus of 150k for singing with us. There’s a LB Fuller at 61 potential that I do the same for. FB Rico Robertson is 66 pot. I make more selective offers to 8 UFAs.

They all come and we head to camp with 62 ( I offer them cash bonuses to encourage their Detroit arrival)

2021 Training Camp Time!!!

DE Whittle – 53/80 – 57/78
S Sam Norton – 26/61 – 32/61
WR McPherson – 29/49 – 32/49
OT Abel Brady – 20/58 – 24/62
ILB Drury – 20/64 – 28/65
WR Gardner – 31/53 – 34/51
S Miceli – 26/55 – 33/57

Not bad. Whittle, Gardner dropped while Brady and Miceli rose.

Right now I have four players with pots in the 70s – Whittle, Dehning, Meier and Monroe. Only one of those, Whittle, has come from my top of the round spot. Ironically. And he may be fading.

I cut WR Douglas and DE Trey Briggs from my first draft.

I reject some trade offers for Griffith and Meier

I would trade Griffith, but not for a 4th I am being offered for him. I also enjoy having a backup QB I enjoy since my main guy hasn’t finished developing yet. I might go for a 2nd but not even a 3rd.

I go 2-2 in the preseason. We beat the Raiders and Rams

Post Pre-Season Rooks

DE Whittle – 53/80 – 57/78 – 58/76
S Sam Norton – 26/61 – 32/61 – 33/57
WR McPherson – 29/49 – 32/49 – 33/48
OT Abel Brady – 20/58 – 24/62 – 26/61
ILB Drury – 20/64 – 28/65 – 33/66
WR Gardner – 31/53 – 34/51 – 34/50
S Miceli – 26/55 – 33/57 – 42/72

WHOA!

While I am sad at the ongoing dropping of Whittle as well as that of Norton, McPherson, Gardener. But Miceli? That guy just blew up. A 7th rounder in the high 50s was a great pickup already if he remained there. But he was a nice find!

I am sad that both of my receivers are falling when I invested two rounds of picks in then, and Norton I had hopes for. But it’s already okay. I have my Miceli!

Instead of last year’s fast sims this year we’ll take in game by game, which is my normal pace. I suspect we are going to be more competitive this year.

Week 1 – We win our opener 15-13 vs the Bears. We had a safety late in the game of a 13-13 thriller in OT. Game MVP was Himes with 24 of 40 for 180 yards and 1 score, no picks. Gavin was 18 for 76 on the ground, and Baxter with the Td. Pick by Pujols. OT Abel Brady, in his first game, notched a nice 4 KRb.

We have a few minor injuries, some questionable and such post-game

Week 2 – We lose to the Steelers 13-25. Himes was the MVP with 20 of 41, 235, and 1:0. He hit RB Duncan, my 3rd down back, for a score. Our nickelback Plante grabbed two picks. Brady led with 3 KRB.

We heal some injuries. No other major ones.

Week 3 – We lost to the Giants 19-16,. Himes rushes for a score.

LB Jacobs is out for a month with a broken clavicle.

Week 4 – We get clocked by the Rams 41-9. I’ll skip the (lack of) highlights

Week 5 – Bye

Week 6 – We lose on the road at GB 13-34. Again, not a lot to discuss

Week 7 – We grab a win against the Titans 17-10. Himes, MVP, with 19 of 30 for 197 and 2:0. He hits Baxter and Malone for scores. Pick by Drury. We had 2 FF we recovered by Malone and S Norton.

Jacobs is back from his injury

Week 8 – We host and edge out the Seahawks 22-20. Malone was MOM with a PR 71 yards for a TD. He caught a score from Himes as well, who was 18 of 29 for 183 and 1:0.

Week 9 – We have a solid shot of going to 4-4 at the halfway point of the season with the 1 win Bears on the docket. We lose 13-25. RB Duncan with our lone TD catch, Himes was 18 of 39, 174, 1:0 where picks by Monroe and Platt, but not enough to get it done.

NT Wallace is out for a month

We are 3-5 at the break

Week 10 – We lose at Arizona 7-27. Malone has a pick, sack, 2 pas def, and was very good. Pretty much it though.

Week 11 – We lose to the Vikings 23-27. Miceli returns a FR for a score.

Week 12 – We defeat the Ravens 34-31. Monroe is Game MVp with 2 sacks, 4 PasDef, and 1 FF which LB Ogden grabbed. Himes was 25 of 41 for 263, and 2:2, and hit Malone and TE Keith for scores. Gavin and Himes had ground goals.

I put FB Rico Roberson on IR and activate my backup RB. Wallace returns from injury.

Week 13 – We lose heavily on the road to the Panthers 38-14.

Week 14 – We get back to our winning ways with a huge 33-23 win over the 9 win Browns in Cleveland. Himes was MVP with 18 of 29, 202, and 2:1. He hit Baxter and Gardner for scores. Ground scores by Gavin and Malone on a reverse. Pick by Pujols and a FF by him too. 2 Sacks by Monroe, 5 KRB by Montpolo.

This was not an easy win physically and we have 5 people dropped to questionable, three starters

Week 15 – We lose to Green Bay 43-17. Himes was 24 of 35 for 247 and 2:1. He hit TEs Keith and Cochrane for scores.

We have two injuries of significance, both are out for the season – Malone and Norton.

Week 16 – We win on the roan at Cincinnati 27-24. MVP was Walt Finger, starting for Malone, with 2 picks, 1 returned for a score. Miceli and Monroe also had picks, and Miceli returned his for a score. Himes was an anemic 11 of 22 for 140 and 0:1. Gavin scored on the ground.

Week 17 – We head to the Vikings who need this win to win the division. We play hard and lose 24-28. Gavin was 22 for 127 and 2 scores. Himes was 18 of 29 for 229 and 0:1. Pick by Plante.

We finish the season 6-10. I was hoping for 8-8.

Ah well.

Stats!

QB Himes, 2843 yards, 13:9, 73.9 rating; 680 yards rushing, 1 score.

RB Mel Gavin, 283 for 885 and 8 scores

WR Mike Baxter, 67 for 790 and 3 scores

Wr Malone, 1 PR RET TD; 463 yards, 4 scores; 1 rush TD

OLB Monroe, 10.5 sacks, 2 blocked passes, 9 hurries, 11 QBKD, 126 solo tackes, 2 picks, 10 pasdef, 5 FF, 2 FumRec.

LB Donley – 2 sacks, blocks, 6 hurries, 9 qbkd, 122 tackles, 11 pasdef, 2 FF

LB Hardy – 2nd on team with 6.5 sacks.

DE Whittle – 1.5 sacks, 3 blocks, 10 hurries,

CB Plante led with 4 picks and 7 pasdef

Pujols and Finger with 2 picks.

Miceli had 1 pick but led my team with 13 pasdef.

Norton? 5 pasdef. Hanks? 0 and 9 pasdef

OT Brady – 25 KRB, 4 sacks allowed,
OG Monpoto, 24, 9 sacks

Not a good year for a lot of folks, like Meier and Dehnneing who had 12 sacks and just 27 KRB between them, my running game was horrible until the last game. My offense was not there. Where was Whittle? He was supposed to help me push my defense to a more reliable level.

This offseason I need to work on overhauling my offense. Badly.

Welcome to 2022

54 score

I re-sign my head coach and DC.

My offensive coordinator, Jon Gruden, was hired as a HC. I hire Lee Milieusniac in that role for me. No other staff changes are imminent.

I head to FA with 36 on my roster.

We have the 5th pick and there is a stud WR on the board that I interview as As Scouted. Hopefully we’ll have a shot at him.

I retain players to get to 49.

I extend for a Year QB Griffith, LS Dixon, C Hawkins,

LB Hardy for two years

By three years, Mike Baxter, NT Wallace

P Newman by 4

I give Drew Monroe a sick deal for 72 mill over five years

Donley gets 34 mill over 4 years

Pujols is given 24.5 mill over 4 years

Hanks 22 mill over 4 years

Alright, that’s good.

The 2022 NFL Amateur Draft

Lions Drafting time!

1.1 Titans – Stud WR Alfred Joseph. That’s annoying. They are loaded at WR, they didn’t need him at all.
1.2 Rams – QB Middleton
1.3 49ers – OT Sorrell
1.4 Pack – QB Farr (Rodgers retired two years ago)

1,5 us.

Dang.

Top three RB Duncan? Overrated. Next two WRs are much lower and worthless.

Thought – top TE? There are three top of first round TEs on the board.

Or I could snag OT Leon Farmer, very strong. We like him better than Sorrell.

1.5 TE Artie Martinez – he’s the most ready to play of the lot. I do him. It’s harder to get a good TE.

In the 2nd I take WR Omar Briggs

3rd round? OG Dwayne Adams fell harder than Lucifer from heaven. I scouted him at 2nd but he’s still on the board. I grab him all day long, we love him.

4th? DE Kenny Crane is the top talent on the board.

5th? LB Britt Belichick – I kid you not. How could I not?

6th? OT Gregory Reado looks like someone with combines that are better than his solid bars and ready for spiking, maybe.

7th? TE Calvin Ricci, a workout warrior in case Martinez fails in camp. Although he interviewed well.

Early Rookie Lookie

TE Martinez – 51/65
WR Omar Briggs – 28/60
OG Dwayne Adams – 33/72
DE Kenny Crane – 38/53
LB Britt Belichick – 27/50
OT Gregory Reado – 24/56
TE Calvin Ricci – 25/51

Alright!

I make offers to 8 UFAs including DE Knaack, QB Lane and CB Burnett, for whom I have high hopes.

They all sign and I have 64 heading with me into camp!

Camp Rookie Lookie

TE Martinez – 51/65 – 57/67
WR Omar Briggs – 28/60 – 32/59
OG Dwayne Adams – 33/72 – 38/71
DE Kenny Crane – 38/53 – 41/50
LB Britt Belichick – 27/50 – 33/48
OT Gregory Reado – 24/56 – 27/62
TE Calvin Ricci – 25/51 – 29/51

Not bad. Reado is rising as expected. As is Martinez.

The Pats offer me a 4th rounder for TE Keith, and I take it, as well as the Texans 6th for DT Estrada

Pre-season, we go 1-3

I cut Pete McPherson and Derek Franklin, WILB Hardy,

My #1 draft pick!

He’s not bad at all. He boomed to a 70 future rating

Post-Preseason Rookie

TE Martinez – 51/65 – 57/67 – 59/70
WR Omar Briggs – 28/60 – 32/59 – 33/56
OG Dwayne Adams – 33/72 – 38/71 – 39/73
DE Kenny Crane – 38/53 – 41/50 – 41/50
LB Britt Belichick – 27/50 – 33/48 – 34/55
OT Gregory Reado – 24/56 – 27/62 – 29/66
TE Calvin Ricci – 25/51 – 29/51 – 30/46

There we are! All three top TEs did well. They are 70, 69 and 67 in potentials, but none are as ready as Martinez.

Major notes?

Himes is developed. Gavin is still the best I can do at RB. I have a very strong O Line if they can develop and play to it. Knaack, Briggs, Adams, Reado are starting as rookies. Roper is replacing Hanks at CB. According to our coaches, Miceli was miscast as a FS and is moving to SS. The same is true of Norton.

So we have the top seed for the playoffs. Nicely done!

Wild Card Weekend:

Cowboys at Bucs

Eagles at Giants

The Giants win 20-23; Cowboys 33-6

Conference Weekend

We host the Cowboys

Cards host the G-Men

New York defeats Arizona 25-21

Setting up a week 16 rematch we lost badly.

2022 NFC Championship

Your #1 seed Detroit Lions
Vs
Your #4 seed New York Giants

We edge them 19-14. Himes is game mvp with 21 of 37 for 237 and 2:0. He hit Gavin for both scores. Drury and Roper with picks. 2 sacks by Whittle. 3 KRB By Meier and Dehning.

The NFL Super Bowl

Your #1 Seed, 12-4 NFC Champion Detroit Lions

VS

Your #3 Seed, 11-5 AFC Champion New England Patriots

New England wins the coin flip, and like normal, wants to defer. Joseph Malone takes the opening kickoff 94 yards to the house for a score! Dude is a weapon. They get the ball, drive quickly to FG range before going 3 and out and kick a 26 yard.

7-3 us

We do the same and we are stopped further back then they are, but Boone drops the 50 yarder.

End of the 1st – 10-3 us

We open the 2nd quarter with the ball, and Himes feeds Gardner inside the redzone for a TD and we are up at the 13:03 mark. We each exert some defensive pressure. They miss a 47 yard FG, and with under 2 minutes, Himes toss a pick that ends the half.

17-3 us

This is nothing new for the Patriots. They know what thy are doing. They drive on a long drive with 15 plays, more than half the quarter, and finish with a 17:10 spot at 6:11.

We get the ball and drive but nothing happens, and the Patriots grab a fast score and tie it.

17-17, end of the 3rd quarter

At the 14:45 mark, we get our first turnover of the day as Luis Hanks picks off the Pats. We have the ball in good position, and within a minute, Himes feeds Gavin a score.

They go three and out and we get the ball deep. We march forward and take about 5 minutes off the clock before Boone steps up and takes a 43 yard FG attempt home at the 3:21 mark.

Our foes, with all of their timeouts, march down the field and at the 1:12 mark, they score a TD and an Xp. They are now down by three. They are forced to try an onside kick, we recover it, and win.

Final Score: 27-24

Himes, MOM, 21 of 33, 224, and 2:1.

Gavin was stopped with 17 for 51.

Whittle with two sacks, Miceli with 1 as well. Monroe had 2.5 sacks on the day.

Monroe had his third return TD this year and it was the final difference maker in the final score.

Dehning had 4 KRB

Nicely done!

“How Ken Norton Jr. is the perfect coach for the Lions

Hello viewers and welcome back to the YouTube channel where we look at various players, coaches, and personnel and talk about how they are a perfect match. To day I want to look at head coach Ken Norton, Jr’s recent Super Bowl victory for the Lions.

This was a breakthrough win for the franchise. Norton is a hard-nosed, no-nonsense head coach, born next door Illinois, and having a Super Bowl winning 13 year career at linebacker before moving to position coach, DC for two teams inkling a Super Bowl win for the Seahawks, and now head coach for the Lions.

When creating his new idea for a franchise, GM D’Avignon said that the only way to build was through the draft, and everything else was a distraction. After D’Avignon arrived, his first team went 5-11. He fired the head coach and then gave walking papers for every player on the team, to create a new dynamic committing to a new era of Lions teams. It was the story of the year. He immediately went out and hired Ken Norton and never looked back. During those years of slow building, Norton was 4-12, 5-11, 5-11, and 6-10. Then this year the team’s talent level finally broke past the dam, and they went 12-4, and had the best record in the NFC, before making it to the Super Bowl and defeating the Patriots in a gritty victory. Ken Norton, Jr. will always be known as a Super Bowl winning head coach.

And he was the perfect coach for D’Avignon’s system. D’Avignon regularly talked of linebackers not truly being appreciated in the NFL. He brought in a head coach who played the position and specialized in developing talented linebackers. And then he also drafted two linebackers in his first draft, and embraced a 3-4 defense that emphasized them. In his second year with the team, LB Donley was the Defensive Player of the Year, and won All-Pro. The following year, LB Monroe was Defensive Player of the Year, and notched his first All Pro nod as well. Do you think that would have happened without Norton?

Norton even fits Detroit as a city. A black man who was passed over for coaching gigs. Never given as much credit as he should have been. Has a chip on his shoulder and something to prove to America. Detroit has embraced him as their guy. Midwestern guy and values, rust belt state, great lakes, there’s a lot to love. And the powerful defense that GM D’avingnon assembled has played into Norton, Jr.’s hands.

He is the perfect coach for the Lions!”

Season Awards:

Super Bowl MVP : QB Teddy Himes

All Pro, 2nd Team – LB Drew Monroe

Coach of the Year: Ken Norton, Jr.

“How Teddy Himes is the perfect QB for the Lions

Hello viewers and welcome back to the YouTube channel where we look at various players, coaches, and personnel and talk about how they are a perfect match. To day I want to look at QB Teddy Himes and his Lions’ness.

Teddy Himes was arguably the most iconic draft pick of GM D’Avignon, as any time you draft a QB early in the first round, they became a big part of the media circus. Himes wore that mantle fine, and was started immediately after he won the training camp battle against QB Carson Griffith. Since then, he has started three years, and been the first high QB Taken by the Lions to actually do what they setout to do in just his third year in the league – win the Super Bowl.

Himes is not your normal signal caller. In his first year he only had 12 TD tosses to 14 Ints and he just tossed 2290 yards. That ain;t great, right? Year 2, he had just 13 TDs to 9 Ints, despite learning a lot from a year of starting, and 2843 yards. And while that was an improvement, 13:9 isn’t really where you want to be. Meanwhile, in year three, he grabbed just 21 scores with 3316 yards, although he reduced his interceptions to just two and had the fewest picks of any starter by far.

That’s important. Himes has developed into a very reliable passer very quickly. And that’s important because the Lions aren’t the biggest offensive juggernaut. They don’t have a single wideout for whom you would say is in the Top 20 wideouts in the league or maybe not even the top 30. So being smart with the ball when you know you are one of the main weapons on this offense is very important. It’s also good when compared with the great defense the Lions have.

Of course, we know that’s not the full Himes story. He’s a scrambling QB. Only Himes and Lamar Jackson have the skillset to be true duel threats in this league. They have battled each year Himes entered the league to see who has the most rushing yards. Lamar Jackson’s numbers this year are: 3279 pass yards; 24:14 TD:Int; 563 yards rush, 4 rust TDs. That gives you a real sense of where Himes really is. He finished with 586 this year and 4 more scores. Since he joined the league, Jackson has more than 3000 yards rushing in 5 seasons. Himes has 1800 even in 3. Himes feels like Jackson in a lot of ways, save for one. He’s a more reliable passer than Jackson.

This year, teams would often play the run against both Himes and Jackson. That was valuable as each has strong run games outside of their QB, as each team finished with more than 3000 rush yards on the season, and each team having a a 1200+ yard RB. But Himes played better in those games as his passing game is better, despite Jackson having a better receiving corp. Himes just tossed 2 picks on the season, both at times when he was forced to pass to win. But Jackson had 14 picks on the season, most in similar situations. You can beat the 2022 Ravens by forcing the pass. You cannot beat the 2022 Lions by doing so, you are just beat in other ways by Himes’ passing.

In addition, the West Coast offense they put together this year allows the passing game to resemble the rushing game, and has people thinking of Himes already as the next Steve Young, who had a similar skill set and mastery of that offense.

That makes Himes the only, true dual threat in the league right now, and scouts put him around 9th or 10th as the best QB in the league overall. He just won a Super Bowl at 26. He could be in this for a long time, and with a nasty defense, ground game, and the best Offensive line in football, he could be looking at more Lombardy trophies very quickly.”

Stats!

QB Himes – 327 of 578, 3316, 21:2, 83.5 QB rating; 586 yards rush, 4 rush scores

That’s a strong stat line. Just 2 picks? More than 4k combined yards? 25 TDs? This is the first good year we’ve had with a QB! Among quals, he had the fewest pick count by far.

RB Mel Gavin – 252 for 1309 yards, 12 scores; 67 for 615 rec yards, 3 rec TDs

Almost 2k yards from scrimmage and 15 scores shows that Gavin was able to really elevate his game this year. I doubt any RB I would have drafted would have done better. He finished with the 6th highest rushing total in the league, although Barkley was the star with 1900+ while Kamara had 1879 and was right behind him. 4th best in rush TDs though!

WR Mike Baxter, 74 for 1050 and 4 scores
TE Martinez, 37 for 444, and 2
WR Gardner, 39, 412, 4

Martinez was injured and was only in 9 games. Baxter notched his first 1000 yard season! We only had 14 players with 1000+ seasons.

O Line

OG Luis Dehning – 32 KRB, 7 sacks, 1 pancake
OC BJ Meier – 27, 4, and 1
OT Reado – 13, 5, an 0
OG Adams – 12, 4, and 2
OT Brady – 10, 6, 0

Down year for Brady, but an up year for everyone else across the board.

Special Teams:

KR Malone, 2 PR RET TD, 1 KR RET TD in Super Bowl.

Defense:

DE Judd, 8 sacks, 3 blocks, 9 hurries
DE Whittle, 6 sacks, 5 blocks, 13 hurries, 1 QBKD

LB Monroe – 3 sacks, 2, 12, and 5; 6 picks (most of any player in the league), 11 pasdef, 3 FF

CB Plante, 4 picks, 6 pasdef
CB Hanks, 3 picks, 11 pasdef
CB Pujols, 1 pick 7 pasdef,
CB Roper, 3 picks, 2 INT RET TD< 8 pasdef, and just in 11 games.

S Miceli – 1 pick, 15 pasdef
S Norton – 10 games, 8 pasdef

Down year for pass rush but an up year for picks and passing defense.

Team Awards

Off. Player of the Year: QB Himes. First good year by a QB, and it was a good year from every angle, even winning the Super Bowl MVP! He is a scrambling, passing machine, much like a Steve Young.

Def. PotY: Monroe – Dropped in sacks, remained an All Pro due to leading the league in picks.

Special Teams PotY: KR Malone – Duh

Rookie PotY: Martinez – We put it all together here. He arrived, and our offense clicked. Players like Himes, Baxter, and Gavin just clicked together. Noice!

Heart Award – CB Luis Hanks – Had a late season resurgence due to injuries and then we left him in and he logged a critical 4th quarter pick in the Super Bowl, our lone turnover of the day, in FG territory which we used to launch a TD that was able to secure the win. Great job Hanks!

I’m a little off put.

I just one the Super Bowl very early. I wasn’t expecting it. We didn’t have a lights-out catcher corps, or this highly developed secondly (save for Miceli), and my sacks were way down.

But it clicked very quickly. We weren’t even a scrappy underdog wild card who gets hot, nor did we need multiple seasons to get ready, advance, get playoff experience, and such.

We won.

And that’s really enough at the end of the day.

Where now?

Try to build? Sustain my Lions team with more draft capital investment?

Is there anything left?

I feel that this quick win was a bit…anti-climatic. What now?

Final Rookie Lookie:

TE Martinez – 51/65 – 57/67 – 59/70 – 64/70
WR Omar Briggs – 28/60 – 32/59 – 33/56- 37/56
OG Dwayne Adams – 33/72 – 38/71 – 39/73 – 49/73
DE Kenny Crane – 38/53 – 41/50 – 41/50 – 43/50
LB Britt Belichick – 27/50 – 33/48 – 34/55 – 34/55
OT Gregory Reado – 24/56 – 27/62 – 29/66 – 39/66
TE Calvin Ricci – 25/51 – 29/51 – 30/46 – 34/46

Right now, I have one player in his 80s (Monroe at 80/80) and then 7 including Himes who is now 70/70,

By comparison:

Here are some other teams’ talent level:

The Pats have just four non-kickers with a 70+ player.

Giants? 5.

Cards? 2. Both on the O Line.

Bucs? 7. A real competitor actually, as they have a 7+ K and P and as well gaining them a powerful roster of 9 players.

How many players in the league has a 70+ pot?

10 QBs, ours is the lowest of them so he’s around 10th in the league

6 RBs

3 TEs, we have the best in Martinez. (2 are rookies in the 1st round we took and the other is at 69 pot, as are two others)!

7 WR

6 OC – Ours is 4th best

10 OT - Ours are in the 60s and thus don’t chart

12 OG – Ours are 3rd and 5th

7 P, 9 K

22 D Line – Ours, Whittle is 9th best

23 Lbs – Ours, Monroe, is 2nd best

16 D Backs – We have Miceli at 15th best D Back

As you can see, we have a solid disruption of talent in the league, and we have at least one powerful player at every level of talent (secondary, lb, D Line, O Line, receiver, QB). My

Draftees this year?

2 on the Green List of ours – Martinez and Reado

For draftees, 13 have 70+ potential right now. We had one as a undrafted boom to the Giants, that we missed, 1 7th round boom by Miami, a late 3rd round RB by the Pats who is 63/76, and such. But we finished with the 7th (Adams) and 11th (Martinez) best draftees regardless of position like FB or P.

8 of these rookies came out of the 1st round, including an UFA, so every team had multiple shots. OG Adams fell high as we were looking at him in the 2nd and we had interviews.

We aren’t a kick-ass team. Yet. We had a ton of close games. For example, we led the league in punts.

Alright, let’s head to the offseason and see what sort of damage we can do!

We finish with an 83 scores

Welcome to 2023!

I submit a plan to renovate our parking lot, field turf and add 30 luxury boxes. We’d paid for 50%.

In the staff draft, our OC was hired elsewhere, so I pick up Brian Daboll. That’s the only change we make.

We head into FA with 43 folks under our roster

Free Agency Roster Massaging

I make offers to Himes. 84 mill over 5 years

5 years for Dehning and 40 mill

4 years, 23 mill for C Meier

I extend TE Douglas by a year; SS Finger too; LB Kalter, LS Dixon; WR Malone by 2 years; Monpoto by 2 years, CB Plante a year

CB Roper, 4 years, 9 mill

I extend QB Griffith by two more years

I extend a few RFAs like DE Knaack.

I run some interviews and now time for drafting!

As someone who's tried this kind of thing with my Lions before and given up, I salute this effort.

I also say hogwash to the realism. Detroit is 1-12 or 1-13 in playoff games in the Super Bowl era. The very idea of them making it to one is a permanent stain upon this entire (good so far) dynasty. As far as drafting quarterbacks like that and having them do that well -- Andre Ware, Heisman Trophy Winner, says hello. As does Rodney Peete, runner-up for said award.
