DEPAUL SET TO OFFER JOHNSON HEAD POSITION?


Milwaukee, WI - Speculation is running rampant throughout the midwest that the DePaul University Blue Demons are set to offer their vacant head coaching position to current University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee head man Johnny Johnson.

Rumors are that Johnson would find himself with a new five year contract in the $225,000 a year range. He currently has two years remaining on his contract with the Panthers at $123,000 per year.

Officials from neither university would comment on the situation. The always amicable Johnson was also very coy when reached for his thoughts.

"All I can say at this time is that I have not been presented with any offer," noted Johnson. "I've met with them a few times and I'm scheduled to meet with them again. At this time however, I remain head coach at UWM."

Milton Johnson, current Marquette Golden Eagles coach and former coach at UWM, was much more open.

"He asked me and I told him that if they offer it to him, I think he should take it," commented Johnson, who has mentored the younger Johnson over the years. "I've coached at UWM and the people there are great and so is Tom (Athletic Director Rooney). But there comes a time where you need to move on and grow. Even though DePaul has struggled the past few years, this would give him a chance to move into a major conference right alongside us."

Indeed, a jump to DePaul would represent a major step up, at least conference wise, as Johnny Johnson would go from the Horizon Conference to the Big East, which houses perennial national powerhouses such as UConn, Georgetown, Louisville and Syracuse, as well as Milton Johnson's Marquette squad.

"That would probably up the ante on our rivalry and I might need to stop giving him so many tips," chuckled Milton Johnson.

A formal announcement is expected within the next few days.

BLUE DEMONS INTRODUCE JOHNSON AS NEW HEAD COACH


Chicago - The DePaul Blue Demons Men's Basketball Program formally introduced their new head coach yesterday. As has been rumored the past few days, Johnny Johnson will officially be the man to lead the program. While terms of the deal were not released, it was speculated that Johnson signed a five year, $220,000 contract.

"We are extremely excited to be welcoming Johnny to DePaul," stated Athletic Director Art Carr. "His numbers the past few years speak for themselves."

Johnson has spent his entire five year head coaching career at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he amassed ninety-four wins in that time span, including one victory in three trips to the Horizon Conference championship. He also led the Panthers to the NIT three times in that span and the NCAA tournament once.

"It's very tough to leave what we had started at UWM. At the same time, I'm very happy to be coming here to Chicago," stated Johnson. "Personally, everything about the situation is a great fit for me. It's a chance to move to a major conference but at the same time I've got a young family and it was very important to stay where our roots are in the Midwest."

Johnson will take over a team that has not had a winning season in five years, posting a 52-89 record in that time span, including going 8-20 last season.

The Blue Demons have failed to win a post-season conference championship dating all the way back to the formation of Great Midwest Conference in 1991-1992. They will be entering their 8th year in the Big East. Their last trip to the NIT was in 2006-2007 while their last NCAA appearance was 2003-2004.

Turning around their fortunes will not be easy. The team will have no seniors on scholarship and will only have one available scholarship open, meaning that Johnson will not have the opportunity early on to utilize one of his biggest strengths.

"I normally say that if you are going to cook the meal, you like to be the one to buy the groceries," conceded Johnson. "At the same time, I like the makeup of what's here already and I believe that we have a good foundation to turn this program around in future years."

PANTHERS RIGGS SELECTED IN 1ST ROUND OF NBA DRAFT

New York - Former University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee small forward Larry Riggs fulfilled a lifelong dream when he was selected in the first round of the NBA Draft last night by the Utah Jazz, 24th overall.

"I'm ecstatic," proclaimed Riggs when he was reached by phone in New York. "Honestly, I'm at a loss for words right now."

The Wisconsin Dells high school standout spent two years at the Milwaukee Area Technical College where he was twice named an All-American with the Stormers.

From there, he moved on the the Panthers, where he averaged 14.2 points per game last season. Riggs was also named the Horizon Conference Defensive Player of the Year both years as well as being named to the Horizon All Conference first team twice.

"I'm really happy for him," noted former coach Johnny Johnson, who this past off-season moved on to the DePaul Blue Demons. "He's worked so hard to get to where he is. He truly deserved to be picked yesterday and I'm so proud for him."

BLUE DEMONS BASKETBALL SEASON PREVIEW


Chicago - For the third time in the last five seasons, the DePaul University Blue Demons Men's Basketball team will have a new face behind the bench as former Wisconsin-Milwaukee coach Johnny Johnson takes over the reigns from Carson Evans.

Johnson had plenty of success in Milwaukee but its doubtful that it will translate over here to the Windy City, at least early in his tenure. DePaul went 8-20 last season, including 5-11 in Big East action. The team also has no seniors on scholarship and will be one of the youngest Division 1 teams in the country.

"I'm excited for the challenge it presents," noted Johnson. "We've got a lot of young players and raw talent. There are definitely going to be some growing pains for both the players and myself these first few years. But I expect us to develop and grow together as a unit."

Of those returning, PF Troy Floyd (SO) may be most heavily relied upon. The Wheaton, Illinois native started 27 games last season, averaging 6.8 ppg and 5.4 rpg. He will need to increase those numbers this year.

The only other returning starter is SF Omar Mallet. The junior averaged 8.0 ppg and 3.0 rpg in 28 games last season.

The starting lineup should look something like this:

PF - Troy Floyd (SO)
C - Tyler Wills (JR)


Hayden is a walk-on who played his high school ball in Nokomis, Illinois. There are big question marks about his ability to handle the load but the team is extremely thin at the guard position. O'Connor is a natural small forward but is very versatile and may even play point guard if need be.

The team is very thin off the bench. Expect SF Russell Ansley (JR), SF Kelly Alvin (FR) and PF Jamaal Harper (SR) to see most of the action, but considering the lack of talent there, if anyone else is able to step up, they could see some significant playing time.

WSSN Magazine has the Blue Demons ranked 14th in the Big East, ahead of only Rutgers and South Florida. While there are no Big East teams ranked in the top nine nationally, six teams cracked the top 25. Georgetown (#10) and Louisville (#11) are also co-favorites in the conference. Syracuse (#13), Notre Dame (#16), Pittsburgh (#19) and Connecticut (#22) are the other teams ranked.

While they would not confirm on the record, school officials are rumored to be expecting DePaul to finish above .500 and in the top half of the Big East.

The Blue Demons pre-conference schedule is set to kick off on November 16th. They will take to home court at All State Arena six times while hitting the road for four. The team will also take part in the JAG Holiday Invitational tournament over Christmas. One pre-conference highlight is just over a week from now, when DePaul will play host to Johnson's former team.

BLUE DEMONS AT .500 HEADING INTO BIG EAST SCHEDULE


Chicago - The DePaul Blue Demons are off to a positive start in coach Johnny Johnson's first year behind the bench. The team has managed to split their first twelve games of the season and currently sit at 6-6 heading into Big East action.

After dropping their first two games, including a close 68-66 decision against Johnson's former team, the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers, the team won six of its last ten, including a first round win against Oregon in the JAG Holiday Invitational tournament.

The team has had very balanced scoring, with all five starters, Josh Hayden, David O'Connor, Omar Mallet, Troy Floyd and Tyler Wills all averaging at least eight points per game.

The teams schedule gets considerably more difficult here on out. They open up their Big East schedule tomorrow night by hosting #10 Georgetown. Their next three games are all on the road against #22 Notre Dame, #11 Syracuse and #21 Louisville.In fact, of the teams eight home games, only three are against unranked opponents.

Johnson Lands Two JuCo Recruits

After PG Rob Smith walked out on the team last summer, Johnson found himself with a second scholarship and has put it to good use. The Blue Demons have secured the services of two highly touted junior college players for two years, starting next fall.

Malachi Harris is a shooting guard from Kalamazoo, MI. He's ranked as the 5th best player in the Midwest according to the WSSN Gold Report. Center Kyle Adams from Pipestone, MN is ranked the 6th best player in the Midwest. Both players also managed to crack the WSSN National Rankings with Harris coming in at 34th and Adams at 46th and both are regarded by WSSN as Five-Star prospects.

UPSET WINS BOOKEND POOR JANUARY FOR BLUE DEMONS

Chicago - A pair of shocking upset victories bookended an otherwise disappointing January for coach Johnny Johnson along with his DePaul University Blue Demons Men's Basketball team.

The Blue Demons opened their Big East schedule back on January 4th with a surprising 65-60 overtime victory against #10 ranked Georgetown. They wrapped January up with an exciting 71-66 victory over #17 St. John's.

In between however were six consecutive losses, including home defeats against both Villanova and Connecticut.

"I can't say that I'm at all shocked by our inconsistency," noted Johnson. "You look at our team, and we have one senior, and he's a walk-on who doesn't see very many minutes. This is a young group of guys in that dressing room."

The Blue Demons schedule will not get much easier in February, as they will host both Pittsburgh and Notre Dame as well as travel to Georgetown. All three teams are currently ranked in the top 25.

"If anything, I can point to those two wins and say 'Look what we're capable of when we play a full fourty minutes.' We have talent, it's just a matter of steadying our consistency," added Johnson.

DePAUL BLUE DEMONS SEASON IN REVIEW

Chicago - For the DePaul Blue Demons, it was a case of new coach, same results. After replacing Carson Evans with Johnny Johnson last fall, the DePaul Board of Directors were expecting improvement but did not see the results they were looking for.

Johnson did lead the Blue Demons to a 12-16 record, the first time the team has reached the 12 win mark in the past six years. That included playing a schedule against 8 teams ranked in the top 25. Impressively enough, the Blue Demons posted a 4-4 record in those games, which included wins against Georgetown (#10), St. John's (#17), Pittsburgh (#10) and Notre Dame (#24).

"There were some highs and some lows," noted Johnson. "We proved we can hang with the best in the country. We also showed that if we don't come to play, any team is capable of beating us."

Another positive note for Johnson and the Blue Demons is that the team only loses one player to graduation, a walk on at that. Power forward Jamaal Harper, who finally saw some action in his senior year will move on.

"That's definitely exciting," noted Johnson. "To prove what were capable of, and to know that everyone could potentially be back. I think expectations will be up next year, at least in my personal opinion. We've got two good experienced recruits coming in, and combine that with the rest of what we have, and I think we should be relatively competitive."

It was a good year on the national stage for the Big East with the Pittsburgh Panthers advancing to the final four. Georgetown, Connecticut, Syracuse, Louisville, Providence, Notre Dame and St. Johns all also advanced to the big dance. However, St. Johns was the only team outside of Pittsburgh to make a Sweet 16 appearance. Rutgers represented the Big East in the NIT but fell in the opening round.

BLUE DEMONS BASKETBALL SEASON PREVIEW


Chicago - While it may have been a new experience for coach Johnny Johnson in his first season with the team, for DePaul University and the Men's Basketball Blue Demons, the 2012-2013 season was simply more of the same.

Johnson came over at the start of last season after five consecutive seasons of 18+ wins at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee playing in the Horizon League. He found out that it is much tougher on the playground with the big dogs of the Big East as DePaul posted their sixth consecutive losing season, going 12-16, including 6-10 in Big East play.

As a positive, the twelve wins were the highest season total since former coach Jason Davis' first campaign in 2007-2008. Johnson also managed to lure two of the Midwest's top junior college prospects in SG Malachi Harris and C Kyle Adams.

Combine those facts with the return of all five starters, a few of which will likely be relegated to the bench with the arrival of Harris and Adams, and there are whispers around Chicago that this may be a team on the verge of finally turning it around after a numbers of seasons in turmoil.

Both Harris and Adams are expected to start. Add in SF Omar Mallet, who led the team in scoring last year, and the team should have some decent offensive punch.

Ansley, a natural SF, took over the point guard reigns from walk-on Josh Hayden half way through last season. The two are expected to battle for playing time again this year. Sophomore Andrei White, who redshirted last season, could also potentially challenge at the guard spot.

Two of last year's starters, David O'Connor, who played out of position at SG, and C Tyler Wills will likely lose their spots to Harris and Adams but should see some decent minutes off the bench.

After ranking the Blue Demons 14th out of the 16 Big East teams in last year's season preview, WSSN Magazine has increased their expectations for DePaul this season and see them finishing somewhere around the middle of the pack. Six of the top seven teams in the Big East, Georgetown (#11), Pittsburgh (#14), Notre Dame (#15), Syracuse (#16), Louisville (#17) and Connecticut (#19), all crack WSSN's National Top 25 Pre-Season Rankings.

Word out of DePaul University is that school officials are not quite as optimistic, hoping for merely a .500 finish and for the Blue Demons to stay out of the Big East basement.

The Blue Demons are set to open their pre-conference schedule tomorrow in New Jersey as they take part in the Coaches Classic pre-season tournament with their opening round matchup slated against the Kentucky Wildcats, who are ranked #20 in the nation in WSSN pre-season poll.

COACHES CLASSIC VICTORY PUSHES BLUE DEMONS INTO TOP 25

Newark, NJ - While the Prudential Center has not been home to very many miracles in its short history, it did experience one this past week as the unheralded DePaul Blue Demons rode to victory in the Coaches Classic pre-season tournament.

In a tournament featuring such teams as Kentucky, Memphis and Maryland, it was DePaul, who have only managed an average of 11 wins over the course of the past six seasons, who emerged victorious. The tournament championship vaulted the Blue Demons out of nowhere into the #11 spot in WSSN's most recent rankings.

It was Kentucky, just three years removed from a national championship and ranked 20th in WSSN's pre-season poll, who fell victim first to the Blue Demons, 69-57. It was DePaul's domination of the boards, which led to 14 second chance points as opposed to only four for the Wildcats, that proved the difference.

Last night it was another SEC team, Mississippi State, that fell to the Blue Demons in the tournament final. The Bulldogs had no answer inside for Kyle Adams, who led the way with 9 rebounds and a very impressive 8 blocks.

In between, they also managed to knock off New Mexico in a nail biter, 69-67, as well as Ohio State, 66-55.

Adams was named the player of the game in three of the four contests. He managed to average 10.0 ppg, 10.1 rpg and 4.0 bpg en route to capturing the tournaments most valuable player honors (editors note: there are no pre-conference tournament awards in the game).

"I'm ecstatic for the guys," proclaimed a jubilant Johnny Johnson, head coach of the Panthers. "Last year there were a lot of ups and downs and it seemed like we struggled to find our rhythm. But everyone came into training camp with a different attitude this time around. We were able to build off our positives from last year, everyone bought in and believed in each other, and the success was evident over the course of the past week. Now it's just a matter of maintaining that consistency night to night."

The Blue Demons continue their pre-conference schedule as they hit the court this Wednesday night in Chicago at Allstate Arena against Central Michigan.

BLUE DEMONS CONTINUE STRONG PLAY HEADING INTO BIG EAST SCHEDULE

Chicago - After struggling last season, it appears that Blue Demon fans are finally getting the opportunity to witness what the hype was about surrounding head coach Johnny Johnson prior to his arrival at DePaul.

Thus far, Johnson has led the Blue Demons to an 11-3 record, including last nights victory over Princeton in the teams final game before they start their Big East schedule in early January. They have also flirted with the national top 25 rankings all season but currently sit just outside the bubble.

Barring a catastrophic collapse, the Blue Demons look poised to finish above .500 for the first time since the 2006-2007. If all goes well and that is the case, the team might even have a shot at attending the NIT.

"There is still a lot of season left to play," noted Johnson, "including the most important part. It's not about looking good and winning early, it's about looking good and winning late. The Big East is always very tough and I guarantee that we will have our hands full."

It has been Johnson's two junior college recruits from last season, SG Malachi Harris and C Kyle Adams that have led the way thus far. Harris leads the team with 14.1 ppg while Adams is second, averaging 12.4 ppg to go along with 11.1 rpg.

The Blue Demons are set to open their Big East schedule in South Bend, Indiana on January 4th against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, currently ranked #12 in the country.

In fact, the first half of January is not pretty, as after the Irish game, DePaul plays host to #19 Syracuse and #7 Georgetown before traveling to #17 Connecticut.

DePaul inks Two to LOI, Still Looking to Fill Two Spots

While he may be experiencing success on the court this season, the same cannot be said for Johnson off the court. Thus far, the Blue Demons only have commitments on two of the four scholarships they are looking to fill for next season.

"I normally like to be done by now," commented Johnson. "We are a little bit behind this year. There were a few players that we thought we had a good shot at landing that opted to go elsewhere. As it is, I'm very happy with who we have so far and feel that we are close to getting commitments from two others."

What they have so far are SF Phil Louis and C Donny McClendon. Ohio native Louis stands 6'7" and stars at Cleveland Central Catholic. He is averaging 15.6 ppg this year and was ranked 20th overall in the Midwest by the WSSN Gold Report.

The 6'10" McClendon plays at Guildford in Rockford, Illinois. The big man is ranked number 23 in the Midwest by WSSN, averaging 16.0 ppg to go along with 7.5 rpg. Both players are classified as four star prospects.

BLUE DEMONS LOOK TO REBOUND IN BIG EAST AFTER UGLY JANUARY

Chicago - The DePaul Blue Demons men's basketball team will look to continue to turn around their season tonight as they travel to Tampa to take on the South Florida Bulls (6-13, 1-7).

After a stellar performance throughout pre-conference play, the Blue Demons have reverted back to their play of prior years as they dropped their first five games in Big East action, although admittedly four of those games were against teams ranked in the top twenty in the nation. There were able to bounce back, sandwiching wins against Villanova and St. Johns around a loss to Connecticut to leave them at 2-6 in Big East play and 13-9 overall.

"Have we played as well as we would have liked?" questioned coach Johnny Johnson. "I think we all know that the answer is no. But at the same time, three of those five losses were by four points or less. You get a couple bounces the other way and we could be 5-3 right now."

Their second half schedule is a bit easier competition wise, but only three of their final eight games are at home, with two of those being against Pittsburgh (#5) and Notre Dame (#13).

"It's going to be tough. However, I think we are capable of turning things around. We are at the same point we were last year, but I think we are a lot more experienced and a lot more talented and we know what we need to do to make the Big East playoffs," concluded Johnson.

BLUE DEMONS EDGE HOYAS TO ADVANCE TO BIG EAST PLAYOFFS

Washington, DC - DePaul junior center Kyle Adams appeared to have an agenda last night as the Blue Demons took on the Georgetown Hoyas at the MCI Center in Washington, and that agenda was to get the Blue Demons into the Big East playoffs.

Adams put up 26 points along with 21 rebounds, both season highs, to lead the Blue Demons to a 59-51 victory over the Hoyas and dash Georgetown's playoff hopes in the process.

With their playoff lives on the line, the Blue Demons came out strong and built a 31-18 lead at the half. Georgetown would battle back but could not overcome DePaul's dominance in the paint.

The win improves the Blue Demons record to 5-11 in the Big East and 16-14 overall. Meanwhile the Hoyas, who opened the season at 12-4 and were once ranked as high as #9 in the country, continue their slide, also finishing at 5-11 in conference play and dropping their overall record to 15-14.

Also tied in the Big East standings with both teams are Cincinnati and Seton Hall. As a result of the tie-break formula, Cincinnati will take 11th place in the conference while DePaul will take 12th and the final playoff spot. Both Georgetown and Seton Hall will be left cleaning out their lockers thinking of what might have been.

For their efforts, DePaul has earned a first round matchup with Syracuse in the Big East playoffs. The Orange (20-7, 11-5) will enter the Big East playoffs as the fifth seed in the conference and are currently ranked #20 in the nation.

BLUE DEMONS SHOCK ORANGE IN OVERTIME PLAYOFF THRILLER

New York - It appears that the third time was the charm last night for the DePaul Blue Demons as they took to the court against the Syracuse Orange in Big East playoff opening round action.

After losing twice during the regular season, 72-68 and 68-58, the Blue Demons finally defeated the Orange when it counted most, a 64-62 come from behind overtime thriller.

Junior shooting guard Malachi Harris came alive late in the second half to lead the Blue Demons back from a 32-26 deficit at half time, much to the chagrin of the many Syracuse fans who had made the trek here to New York City.

Harris scored 14 of his 25 points in the second half, including a buzzer beater to tie the game at 53 to send the game into overtime. He also chipped in five more in overtime to help advance the Blue Demons to the Big East quarterfinals.

"It was a team effort," commented Harris. "They collapsed quite a bit in the box and forced Troy (Floyd) and Kyle (Adams) to kick the ball back out to us, and thankfully I was able to hit some key shots."

DePaul will meet the Louisville Cardinals (21-7, 11-5) in the quarterfinals. The Cardinals, who are the #4 seed in the Big East and subsequently earned a first round bye, are currently ranked #11 in WSSN's national Top 25. The teams met once earlier this year in Louisville, a 61-50 decision for the Cardinals.

"They present a challenge, no questions asked," noted Blue Demons coach Johnny Johnson. "At the same time, our boys like to be challenged. We needed to beat Georgetown on the road and then knock off the #20 seed in the nation to get here, so I think we're ready."

BLUE DEMONS OFF TO BIG EAST SEMI-FINALS

New York - Have you caught the Demon fever yet? The DePaul Blue Demons Men's Basketball team won for the third consecutive time last night to once again keep their season alive and advance to the Big East semi-finals here at Madison Square Garden.

The Blue Demons came away with a 70-60 victory over the Louisville Cardinals, who were ranked #11 in the country and possessed a 21-7 record heading into last night's action.

While the win may have been a shock to many, even more surprising was the fashion in which they did it. Louisville had the top ranked defense in the Big East throughout the season and currently ranked #8 in the nation, allowing just 57.4 points against per game.

Apparently the Cardinals did not get the memo to cover Blue Demon shooting guard Malachi Harris. After dropping 25 points against Syracuse one night ago, Harris rained 23 points down on the Cards. Even more impressive was that 19 of those points came in the second half.

Much like they did against Syracuse, DePaul once again trailed heading into the half, this time down 38-32. A spirited effort along with a very effective full court press led to a plethora of Cardinal turnovers in the second half, allowing DePaul to eventually tie things up before pulling away late.

"It's exciting," proclaimed Blue Demons coach Johnny Johnson. "To know where this team has come from in such a short period from a few years ago is remarkable. At the same time, our task isn't done. Our goal, much like everyone else is to win the Big East title, not just to get to the semi-finals. We've got two wins ahead of us to get to where we want to be."

That first win will have to come against the University of Connecticut Huskies. UConn is currently ranked #8 by WSSN, finished the Big East season at the top of the standings with a 14-2 record, and currently sit at 24-4 overall.

"We're the underdog again, but that's the way we like it," noted Johnson. "We were the underdog when we won the Coaches Classic at the start of the year, we were the underdog a few weeks back against Georgetown, and we were the underdog against both Syracuse and Louisville. We'll be fine."

The Blue Demons are not the only Cinderella story of the Big East playoffs. West Virginia, who are the tenth seed in the playoffs after a 6-10 year, were 11-17 overall after the regular season but have also advanced to the semi-finals after disposing of Villanova and Pittsburgh (#6 in the country). They will take on Notre Dame (#13) in the other semi-final later today.

BLUE DEMONS THUMP HUSKIES, WILL PLAY FOR BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY

New York - The look on the faces of the many UConn fans in the crowd here at Madison Square Garden said it all last night. After the Notre Dame Fighting Irish disposed of West Virginia 56-36 earlier in the day, many here believed that their Huskies would take on the Irish today for the Big East championship.

The only thing standing in their way were the lowly DePaul Blue Demons, who the Huskies had walloped 85-51 earlier this year.

But like the Syracuse Orange before them, the UConn Huskies found out that this was a different DePaul team than the one they had played earlier in the season. The confidence that DePaul possessed in pre-conference play had returned as the Blue Demons won their fourth straight game last night, a 74-62 victory, leaving the Huskies and their fans licking their wounds.

For the third straight time in the Big East playoffs, the Blue Demons trailed at the half, albeit by a slim 31-29 margin.

But like he has done all playoffs, DePaul coach Johnny Johnson rallied his troops in the dressing room and they came out strong in the second half.

The offense came alive by dropping 45 points, led by Omar Mallet, Malachi Harris and Kyle Adams. Meanwhile, the defense continued to give Connecticut's shooters fits, holding the nation's #4 offense, which averaged 76.0 points per game, to only 31 again in the second half, en route to the 74-62 victory.

"I'm so proud of our guys," said a jubilant Johnson. "We had our highs and lows throughout the season. We really struggled at times through the Big East schedule. But we always held our heads high. We've had such good leadership from every guy in that dressing room and they definitely deserve to be where they are."

Where they are is one win away from their first ever Big East championship. Standing in their way are the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Currently ranked #12 in the country, the Irish are currently 23-6. They finished the Big East schedule in third at 11-5 before knocking off Providence and West Virginia in the playoffs.

The Irish, Big East members since 1995-1996, are also looking for their first ever Big East conference championship banner.

BLUE DEMONS FALL TO IRISH, STILL ADVANCE TO NCAA TOURNAMENT

New York - It was a case of good news and bad news for the DePaul Blue Demons men's basketball program here in New York yesterday.

Early in the afternoon, the Blue Demons fell to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Big East conference championship game, 52-42.

Later in the day however the news was good, as the Blue Demons, for the first time since 2003-2004, were announced amongst the 65 teams that will compete for the national championship, surely thanks in part to their successful playoff run.

That successful run came to an abrupt halt yesterday with the loss to Notre Dame in the final. The Fighting Irish used their domination inside the paint to stake out a 36-22 lead at the half.

While the Blue Demons had established themselves as the cardiac kids thanks to their come from behind victories this past week in New York, the 14 point deficit was too much to overcome.

"It was disappointing, no doubt," commented Blue Demon coach Johnny Johnson. "We worked so hard, and to be so close, it hurts. At the same time, there are fourteen other teams in the Big East that would have traded places with us for the opportunity we had today and we can hopefully take some solace in that fact."

The loss dropped the Blue Demons record to 19-15 and they were left watching anxiously last night as the NCAA tournament playoff brackets were announced.

Just hours later, the disappointment from earlier in the day subsided somewhat as the Blue Demons were named the #11 seed in the Midwest bracket.

"College basketball is a strange game," observed Johnson. "To think that just a few weeks ago we were one loss against Georgetown away from missing the Big East playoffs. If we lose that game, we don't advance to the final today, we surely don't advance to the NCAA tournament and there is even a chance that we miss out on the NIT. As it is, we now have the chance to be a part of March Madness."

DePaul will travel to St. Louis this Thursday to take on the #6 seeded New Mexico Lobos. The Lobos finished the year at 23-8, including 12-4 in conference play, en route to capturing both the Mountain West regular season and playoff banners. There are also ranked #20 in WSSN's national top 25.

Interestingly enough, the matchup with the Lobos will be a rematch of the Coaches Classis pre-season tournament semi-final, a game in which the Blue Demons edged New Mexico 69-67, thanks in large part to Kyle Adams 15 rebounds.

"We will be in tough, no question," surmised Johnson. "Will they be out for revenge? I don't think so. That first game means nothing for us right now and I think the same can be said for them. That was four or five months ago. We've both moved on."

The Blue Demons were one of eight Big East teams advancing to March Madness. Connecticut (#8), Pittsburgh (#10), Notre Dame (#11), Louisville (#13), Syracuse (#21), Providence and Villanova will all look to become the first Big East national champion since Connecticut in 2004. Georgetown was the lone Big East team named to the NIT.

LOBOS PUT AN END TO BLUE DEMONS SEASON

St. Louis- There will be no magical run for the DePaul Blue Demons men's basketball team in the NCAA championship tournament, thanks to the New Mexico Lobos 104-76 victory here in St. Louis last night.

After Cinderella performances in both the Coaches Classic as well as the Big East conference tournament, many pundits were pegging the Blue Demons as potential sleepers.

Further fueling the fire was the fact that the Blue Demons had already knocked off New Mexico once earlier this year in the Coaches Classic. However, the Lobos were able to extract a bit of revenge last night as it will be them and not DePaul who advance to the round of 32.

"You've got to give them credit," surmised Blue Demons coach Johnny Johnson. "Their offense was great. What did they shoot from the floor? About 65% I believe. You've got to be pretty good to beat a team when they shoot at a clip like that."

Indeed it was the potent New Mexico offense that did in the Blue Demons. Not only did they shoot 64.9% from the floor, they equaled that total from behind the three point arc, shooting 11 for 17.

"I don't even think we played that poorly, they were just lights out. The looks that we were giving them weren't necessarily overly good, but they made sure to take advantage of them," proclaimed Johnson.

The early exit puts only a minor damper on an otherwise outstanding season for the Blue Demons, one in which they appeared to turn the corner on their misfortunes of previous years.

ADAMS NAMED BIG EAST PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Providence, RI - To the surprise of many, DePaul Blue Demon junior center Kyle Adams was named the Big East's Player of the Year last night at a ceremony in Providence.

Adams, who transferred in to DePaul this fall as a junior college recruit, pulled off the impressive feat of averaging a double-double over the course of the season, posting 10.9 points per game to go along with 10.5 rebounds per game.

He also averaged 3.6 blocks per game, which helped him to take home Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors as well. Not surprisingly, Adams was also named to the Big East All Conference First team.

The most impressive part of Adams' accomplishments were some of the high profile players that he beat out in the process. Both NCAA tournament Most Outstanding Player Jamie Blakes of Notre Dame and First Team All-American Steve Graves of Georgetown as well as Louisville's Darnell Campbell and Cincinnati's David Trilli, both Second Team All-American's, finished behind Adams in voting.

"I'm really happy," noted Adams. "With the level of talent in the Big East, I was shocked to receive the award. Any number of players could have deserved it."

Adams was not the only Blue Demon player to receive any post-season recognition, as shooting guard Malachi Harris, another junior college recruit who debuted this season, was named to the All-Conference Second Team.

Harris averaged 14.7 points per game this past season to lead all Blue Demon scorers.

DEPAUL BLUE DEMONS SEASON IN REVIEW

Chicago - After showing displays of promise in coach Johnny Johnson's first season a year ago, the DePaul Blue Demons appeared to finally turn the corner as they posted their first winning season since 2006-2007 when they went 20-14. They also returned to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2003-2004.

Much of the rejuvenation was thanks in large part to two junior college recruits brought in by Johnson this season. Both center Kyle Adams and shooting guard Malachi Harris made huge contributions to help turn the team around and guide the Blue Demons to a 19-16 record.

Their efforts were apparent immediately as Adams was named tournament MVP at the Coaches Classic tournament which DePaul captured for the first time in school history. Harris led the team in scoring throughout the season.

From there they posted a disappointing regular season record in the Big East going 5-11, barely managing to scrape into the conference playoffs. From there it was a different story though as the team posted consecutive wins over Syracuse, Louisville and Connecticut, all seeded in the top 20 in the country, before falling in the Big East final to Notre Dame.

For their efforts, Adams was named the Big East Player of the Year, Big East Defensive Player of the Year and All-Conference First Team while Harris took All-Conference Second Team honors.

With both players eligible to return, next season once again looks promising for the Blue Demons. The biggest thing to hinder the squad this year was their inconsistency. If they are able to bring a consistent effort night after night, they should once again be a team to contend with in the Big East.

The team will say goodbye to four seniors, the biggest impact likely being SF Omar Mallet, who was the team MVP two seasons ago. With the emergence of Adams and Harris, there was less reliance on Mallet this past season, who saw his points per game average dip by two points to 8.2 ppg this year. He did manage to average 7.8 ppg over his four year career at DePaul, starting in 88 games during that span.

Also moving on is starting PG Russell Ansley. The converted small forward took over the reigns at point guard midway through last season and remained the starter through out this past year in which he averaged 6.2 ppg to go along with 3.4 apg.

Center Tyler Wills also moves on. A starter a year ago, he lost his position this past season to Adams. However, he did remain the first big man called upon off the bench and managed 18.7 minutes per game in which he managed to chip in 4.8 ppg and 4.1 rpg. Wills was also very popular in the dressing room and considered one of the leaders on the team.

Finally, SF Clarence Kraft also moves on. While originally considered a decent talent coming out of Munising High in Michigan, Kraft could now only be considered a bust as he only saw action in 18 games over the course of his career at DePaul.

On the national stage, it was a huge year for the Big East. Notre Dame, who defeated DePaul in the Big East final, advanced all the way to the national championship game where they defeated previously unbeaten Florida to capture the first national championship in Fighting Irish history. It was also the first national championship for a Big East team since Connecticut in 2004.

Syracuse also managed to advance to the Final Four, where they were eliminated by the Irish. Georgetown, who missed out on the Big East conference playoffs, ended up receiving an NIT bid, where they advanced all the way to the final before falling to Washington.

Final Recruits Confirmed for Fall of 2014

Johnson also confirmed the teams two final recruits that will be joining Phil Louis and Donny McClendon as freshmen next season, as both PG Trent Burke and PF Shannon Block officially signed their LOI's a few weeks ago.

Burke, a product of Floyd Central High School in Indiana, has averaged 16.0 ppg along with 4.9 apg and 2.9 spg. The WSSN Gold Report has him evaluated as a four-star prospect and ranked 30th overall in the Midwest.

Block, from Olney, IL, has averaged 15.3 ppg and 7.3 rpg this year at East Richland High. He is ranked 39th overall in the Midwest and is also considered a four-star prospect.

BLUE DEMONS BASKETBALL SEASON PREVIEW


Chicago - Last season, coach Johnny Johnson took the DePaul Blue Demons men's basketball team to where no DePaul team had gone in ten years, and that was back to the NCAA Championship tournament.

The team also played Cinderella in capturing the Coaches Classic tournament banner at the start of the season as well as making a trip to the Big East finals in the conference playoffs. While there may have been some inconsistency in between, the team definitely showed vast improvement from years past.

The expectations will likely be increased somewhat this coming season, particularly with team MVP Kyle Adams and leading scorer Malachi Harris both returning for their senior seasons. Also eligible to return is PF Troy Floyd.

The team did lose two starters in point guard Russell Ansley and small forward Omar Mallet. David O'Connor, who started at shooting guard two years ago before being relegated to the bench last season in place of Harris, is a natural small forward and should have an easy adjustment into the starting spot.

The big question mark, as it has been the past few years, is at point guard. While the team did land solid recruit Trent Burke, whispers in camp are that the staff does not feel he is ready and he will likely redshirt, thus leaving the position wide open.

As you can see, senior shooting guard Wayne Walcutt is projected to get the starting gig at point guard, ahead of other candidates Andrei White, Eric McNeish and senior walk-on Josh Hayden, who started part of his sophomore year but has since seen minimal action. However, as we mentioned earlier, this position is a free for all.

The big surprise there may be the presence of freshman center Donny McClendon at the starting power forward spot. The fact is that McClendon has outperformed Floyd throughout camp. Despite having started for the past three years, the staff was very dissapointed in Floyd's play last season and that could also factor into the decision. This could be an interesting battle to watch.

WSSN Magazine once again has the Blue Demons ranked in the middle of the Big East, coming in at 8th out of 16. Six Big East teams are ranked in the Top 25 nationally, including defending national champion Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are predicted to repeat as Big East champs and are #9 overall in the pre-season polls.

Off the record, DePaul officials confirmed that their expectations are in line with WSSN's predictions, as they expect Johnson and the Blue Demons to finish in the top half of the conference with a better than .500 record.

The Blue Demons pre-conference schedule is highlighted by four games against Big Ten teams, including Illinois, ranked #15 in the pre-season polls. The team will also travel to Durham, NC to take on the #11 ranked Duke Blue Devils. Other highlights include an invitation to the Las Vegas Winter Jam tournament and a rematch with Johnson's former team, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers.


Adams Nominated For Norton Award

In other Blue Demon news, senior center Kyle Adams has been announced as one of the nominees for the prestigious Norton Award, which is given out to the player who exemplifies hard work on the basketball court, in the classroom and in their community.

Last year Adams averaged a double-double for the course of the season in being named the Big East Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.

"It's an honor," commented Adams. "The Norton Award is reserved for the top players in the country. Do I see myself winning it? Not very likely. But just to be given consideration and be grouped in with some of those players is a feat in itself."

BLUE DEMONS PICK UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF LAST SEASON

Chicago - Heading into this season, the DePaul Blue Demons were looking to prove that last season's memorable Big East playoff run was not a fluke. If the first half of this season is any indication, last season was just a sign of things to come.

The Blue Demons officially concluded their pre-conference schedule last night with a win against Northwestern, their tenth win in their past eleven games to move their overall record to 11-2.

The highlight thus far has been the upset over #4 ranked Illinois on the Illini's home turf at Assembly Hall. In fact, the only two losses so far this season for DePaul have been to #7 Duke and in the Las Vegas Winter Jam tournament final against #13 Florida.

The Blue Demons are set to open their Big East schedule at home against Georgetown on January 4th.

DePaul fill four open scholarships

With the two key players for DePaul, Kyle Adams and Malachi Harris set to move on, coach Johnny Johnson knew that he would have his work cut out for him to fill some big shoes. However, he has managed to fill the four open spots for next season with a nice crop of recruits.

PF Mike Hart from Clawson High in Michigan is probably the most ready. He is considered to be very well rounded on both sides of the ball. The 6'6" is averaging 13.7 ppg this year to go along with 7.2 rpg. Ranked 116 in the country, he's considered the 3rd best power forward in the Midwest.

Joining Hart at DePaul next season will be PG Mitch O'Neil, SG Tim Stowers, and PF Matt Jordan. O'Neil is from Brown City, Michigan and ranked 11th of all players in the Midwest. Indiana product Jordan and Minnesotan Stowers are also consensus top twenty overall players in the region.

BLUE DEMONS UPSET IRISH TO HEAD INTO BIG EAST PLAYOFFS ON A WINNING NOTE

Chicago - Despite already being assured of a Big East playoff spot, the DePaul Blue Demons (20-9, 9-7) still felt they had something to prove heading into last night's game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (22-5, 13-3).

After all, it was the #10 ranked Irish who defeated the Blue Demons in the Big East final last year before rolling on through to capture their first national championship in school history. And while the Irish had already guaranteed themselves top spot in the Big East, the Blue Demons were looking to ensure a finish above .500 in Big East play for the first time in eight years.

The win earns the Blue Demon's the 6th seed in the Big East playoffs where they will take on the 11th seeded South Florida Bulls (11-17, 6-10). It also goes along way in possibly securing the Blue Demons their second straight trip to the NCAA tournament.

DEPAUL BLUE DEMONS SEASON IN REVIEW

Chicago - Following an improbable run to the Big East championship game last season, for the first time in a number of years there was hope at DePaul University for a successful season.

The question this season was if the Blue Demons would be able to build off that success and the answer was yes. Johnny Johnson led his troops to their first twenty win season in eight years and their second straight appearance in the NCAA Championship tournament. Unfortunately, despite being ranked #23 in the country and earning a #5 seed, the Blue Demons once again ducked out in the opening round.

The team will be in very tough to replicate that success next season with the loss of their two most prolific players the past two seasons moving on to graduation.

Kyle Adams and Malachi Harris joined the team as JuCo recruits two years ago and immediately stepped in and made an impact. For his part, Adams has averaged 9.7 ppg, 10.5 rpg, and 3.2 bpg in that span including 20 double-doubles in 64 career starts.

Adams also recently earned his second straight Big East Defensive Player of the Year award and with it was named to Big East All Conference First team for the second time.

Harris has averaged 15.8 ppg across the past two seasons and is coming off being named to the Big East All Conference Second team for the second year in a row.

Also moving on are SG Wayne Walcutt, who started for the first time this past season at point guard. PF Troy Floyd, who started in each of his first three seasons before being relagated to the bench this past year and walk-on PG Josh Hayden, who started as a sophomore but has seen his playing time drastically decline since, are the other two players graduating.

The loss of those five leaves a number of question marks for the Blue Demons and some mighty large shoes to fill come next fall.

HARRIS AND ADAMS FIND NEW HOMES IN NBA

New York - Following impressive two year careers at DePaul University, both SG Malachi Harris and C Kyle Adams were selected in the second round of the NBA Draft last evening. The duo will forever be linked in the hearts of DePaul fans after joining the team in the fall of 2013 and leading the team to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances the past two years.

Harris was selected 36th overall by the Phoenix Suns. The Kalamazoo, Michigan native is known for his scoring ability. Meanwhile, Kyle Adams was taken by his home state Minnesota Timberwolves two picks later, 38th overall. Adams is a force on both sides of the ball and is a two time Big East Defensive Player of the Year award winner.

"I'm happy for both of those two," exclaimed Blue Demons coach Johnny Johnson. "Personally, I'm a little bit surprised that Kyle didn't go in the first round. I think he may have been overshadowed by kids at the bigger schools a bit I know that Minnesota has to be ecstatic to get him where they did."

Despite sliding into the start of the second round, Adams was only the 4th centre selected. The big man was also a semi-finalist last season for the prestigious Norton Award.

"Personally, I owe quite a bit to those two players for giving DePaul and myself a chance and coming in here to help turn this program around," added Johnson. "I wish them all the best in the future and I'm sure we'll keep in touch."

Blue Demons Recruit Class Ranked in Top 25

In the recent Wolverine Sports Rankings of the top college recruiting classes, the Blue Demons crop for next season came in ranked at #21. Four players, PG Mitch O'Neil, SG Tim Stowers and PF Mike Hart and Matt Jordan.

The Blue Demons join other Big East teams Syracuse (#4), Connecticut (#10), Notre Dame (#16) and Pittsburgh (#20) in the top 25.

BLUE DEMONS BASKETBALL SEASON PREVIEW


Chicago - The last two years have seen a remarkable turnaround for the DePaul University Blue Demons. In head coach Johnny Johnson's second season behind the bench, he posted 19 wins before leading the team to 21 victories last season. Both seasons were accompanied by trips to the NCAA tournament.

However, the other big factor accompanying both seasons was the presences of C Kyle Adams and SG Malachi Harris. Both Blue Demons stars were selected in the second round of the NBA Draft this past June leaving the cupboard looking very bare.

It is clear that this team could be in for a challenge. The team only returns two starters in O'Connor and McClendon and not much in the way of experience beyond that. Burke is a talented freshman who redshirted last season but one has to wonder how he will do facing the pressures of the Big East. Another impressive youngster is PF Mike Hart. Unfortunately, due to a lack of depth up front, he will not have the opportunity that he likely requires to wet his feet before jumping into the pool.

Senior SF Kelly Alvin rounds out the projected starting five. He has produced very little in his first three seasons and is expected to merely plug a hole. The bench does not offer much hope either, with frosh PG Tim Stowers expected to be the primary sixth man. C Reggie Campbell is a walk-on who could see some playing time mostly due to the lack of depth up front. While veterans White and Brand are also expected to chip in.

WSSN Magazine predicts the Blue Demons to finish 14th out of 16 in the Big East. However, that is less an indication of the Big East talent then it is of DePaul's. Syracuse is the only Big East team in the top 20 rankings nationally, falling in at 6th. However, Notre Dame, Conneticut and Pittsburgh are ranked 21st, 23rd and 24th respectively.

School officials are a bit more optimistic, stating that they expect approximatley 15 wins out of the Blue Demons and an NIT appearance.

All said, it could be a very difficult season for the Blue Demons. Johnson opted to redshirt talented freshman PG Mitch O'Neil and PF Matt Jordan which could be an indication that he is looking beyond this season as well.

BLUE DEMONS LAND TWO OF MIDWESTS BEST PROSPECTS

While there may not be much hope for next year, if Johnson is able to continue to recruit like he has done last year and continued to do this year, then the future will indeed again be very bright for DePaul.

Word is that two five-star recruits have verbally committed to the Blue Demons next season. C Ryan Sullivan is a 6'10" beast from Altoona, WI. The Altoona High star is averaging over 20 ppg this season and is ranked as the 8th best recruit in the Midwest and #39 overall nationally.

He will be joined next season by SG Harold Wilks. The junior college guard from Plano, IL is a force on both sides of the ball and was ranked #9 in the Midwest.

Johnson is still looking to fill one more scholarship and word is that it has been offered to four star SF Thaydeus Hayes of St. Claire Shores, MI. He is considered another all around talent and ranked #39 in the Midwest.

BLUE DEMONS OFF TO SURPRISING START

Chicago - After losing their two best players over the past two seasons in Kyle Adams and Malachi Harris, expectations were tapered somewhat for the DePaul Blue Demons heading into this year. Many looked at the team and its two returning starters and pegged this year as a rebuilding project.

However, if the pre-conference schedule is any indication, the Blue Demons have not lost a step. After opening the season with losses in two of their first three games against #21 Illinois and #3 Indiana, DePaul went on to victories in 7 of their next 9, with their only two losses coming against #8 Oklahoma and against Michigan in Ann Arbor.

"A lot of people made the mistake that lack of experience equated to lack of skill," noted head coach Johnny Johnson. "I think these players have proven that's not the case. While we may not have the go to guy's such as Kyle or Malachi, we have a number of different players that can step up on any night."

The biggest contributors have been sophomore C Donny McClendon, who has done his best to fill the big shoes of Adams, and senior SF David O'Connor, who has seen playing time in both the #2 and #3 spot this season. Freshman SG Tim Stowers has also proven capable and has played his way into the starting lineup recently.

"The thing to remember," noted Johnson, "is that there is a lot of season left. The Big East is always tough and we are going to need guys to continue to step up if we hope to see success over the next three months."

VICTORY OVER IRISH SENDS BLUE DEMONS INTO BIG EAST TOURNAMENT ON A WINNING NOTE

Chicago - The DePaul Blue Demons (16-12, 8-8) snapped a three game losing skid last night with a victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to finish up their Big East schedule with a .500 record and head into the Big East tournament with momentum on their side.

After losses at West Virginia, Georgetown, and #10 ranked Syracuse, the Blue Demons got 19 points from senior David O'Connor and forced Notre Dame starting PG Bryce Williams into 9 turnovers to put the brakes on their late season skid.

"Definitely a big game," observed DePaul coach Johnny Johnson. "No team wants to head into the tournament coming off four straight losses. It was important that we get back on the winning track."

The victory means a first round matchup in the Big East tournament against #25 Louisville (19-11, 8-8), who finished tied with DePaul in the standings, with the Blue Demons earning the 8th seed while Louisville gets the 9th thanks to DePaul's 70-60 victory over the Cardinals earlier this season.

BOSTON COLLEGE ENDS BLUE DEMONS SEASON

Los Angeles - The #6th ranked team in the country, Boston College (25-5, 11-5) put an end to any hopes that the DePaul Blue Demons had of a magical March run yesterday afternoon. After advancing to the round of 32 for the first time in 16 years on Friday with a win over West Virginia (17-12, 10-6), the top seed in the South bracket proved too much for DePaul.

The loss concluded a surprisingly strong season for the Blue Demons, who many pundits had finishing in the bottom of the Big East standings and missing out on the post-season altogether.

Many were surprised when they advanced to the Big East playoffs, let alone earning a #8 seed in the South bracket. The win over West Virginia was a noteworthy accomplishment because advancing past the opening round was something they were not able to accomplish in the previous two seasons with stars Kyle Adams and Malachi Harris.

"I'm really proud of the effort this year," noted coach Johnny Johnson. "Not a lot of people gave our guys a chance, and while it may not have always been pretty basketball, our guys proved that they can hang with the best."

DEPAUL BLUE DEMONS SEASON IN REVIEW

Chicago - There was little expectation for the DePaul University men's basketball team heading into the 2015-1016 season, so the fact that the team posted a respectable 17-14 record along with a trip to the round of 32 in the NCAA tournament likely means many happy faces around the team's boosters.

A year ago the team lost two key stars in Kyle Adams and Malachi Harris along with a few other veteran players and it did not look as if the team possessed any players ready to step up and fill those roles. While the Blue Demons may not have received any performances which came close to matching either Adams or Harris, what they did get was a strong collective performance from the team as a whole.

"Different guys stepped up on different nights and we were able to get the job done," stated head coach Johnny Johnson. "A lot of it also had to do with the work ethic our guys brought to the court, not just on game nights but each and every practice. That all starts with the leaders on the team."

The main team leader was SF David O'Connor. The senior finished second on the team in scoring 10.4 ppg and will be sorely missed next year. O'Connor started as a freshman, junior, and senior at both the shooting guard and small forward positions.

SF Kelly Alvin is also moving on. Alvin opened this season as a starter for the first time in his varsity career before being supplanted by freshman Tim Stowers. Valuable SG Andrei White also graduates. While never considered a starter, White has consistently been a go to guy off the bench,averaging 13.3 minutes per game throughout his career. The final player moving on is walk-on PG Pete Barnes.

BLUE DEMONS BASKETBALL SEASON PREVIEW

Chicago - Little was expected of the DePaul Blue Demons last season and they surprised many when they went on to post a very respectable 17-14 record, including 8-8 in the very tough Big East.

With those results, it is fair to say that the bar has once again been raised. The only starter gone from last season is SF David O'Connor, who finished second in scoring. On top of that, the team will add talented JuCo recruit SG Harold Wilks along with freshman C Ryan Sullivan. Both could see decent playing time from the get go.

The only real position up for grabs is the small forward position. Hart could potentially drop down into the spot while Jordan or Sullivan takes over the power forward role. Wilks is a scorer and Stowers versatility means that there are occasions when both could be on the court.

Overall, there appears to be a lot less question marks regarding the roster than at this point last year which should be promising.

Despite the optimism around campus, WSSN Magazine only predicts the Blue Demons to finish 12th out of 16 in the Big East. Syracuse are the Big East favourites and ranked #8 in the nation. They are expected to face competition from #17 ranked Georgetown and #23 ranked Louisville.

School officials are hoping for a record above .500 and for the Blue Demons to finish in the top half of the Big East standings.

BLUE DEMONS STRUGGLES HIGHLIGHT PRE-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE

Chicago - A victory last night over the lowly IPFW Mastadons secured the DePaul Blue Demons their third victory in their last four starts which helped to salvage an otherwise disappointing start to the season as the Blue Demons concluded their pre-conference schedule with a 5-6 record.

Things looked good for the Blue Demons early as they opened with back to back home victories over Minnesota and Northwestern. It was all downhill from there though as they dropped their next five, before recovering slightyl in late December.

The inconsistent play is dissapointing for a team that, at least within the organization had high hopes. Rumours abound that there is a lot of friction in the locker room, with junior Harold Wilks, a JuCo recruit, being the epicenter of the teams problems. However, for all the supposed controversy behind the scenes, he has been the one leading the Blue Demons on the court while few others have stepped up.

"Every guy in that dressing room needs to pull his socks up a bit," stated coach Johnny Johnson. "We are a much better team than we've showcased and everyone needs to get on the same page or we could be in a tough ride throughout the Big East schedule."

BLUE DEMONS INK TWO PLAYERS TO LETTERS OF INTENT

Johnson has managed to secure the services of two talented guards who will join the Blue Demons in the fall of 2017. PG Jeff Oliver stars at Ridgemont High in Ridgeway, Ohio. The 6' talent was ranked 189 nationally by WSSN. SG Devan Martin was ranked #353 nationally. At 6'3", the Hammond, IN product is fairly versatile.

"I would be lying if I said we weren't looking for at least one small forward this year," noted Johnson. "With that said, that position was fairly thin across the board this year. We had a chance to get two talented guys and we needed to act on them and I think both could be key pieces throughout their careers hear."

BLUE DEMONS VICTORIOUS IN FINAL GAME DESPITE WILKS SUSPENSION

Chicago - Despite the suspension of leading scorer Harold Wilks, the DePaul Blue Demons (12-15, 7-9) still managed to emerge victorious against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (18-10, 9-7) last night to earn a spot in the Big East playoffs.

Sophomore SG Tim Stowers led the way for DePaul with 15 points and 6 rebounds to secure DePaul the 11th seed in the tournament. The Irish will get a chance for revenge immediately as their 6th place finish sets a first round matchup against DePaul.

The big news though was the absense of Wilks. Prior to the game it was announced that the Blue Demons had suspended Wilks for the remainder of the season for "attitude problems." It has been no secret all season that this has been a team in turmoil with issues off the court likely influencing their performance on the court.

The Blue Demons likely need a significant Big East tournament run to have any shot at an NCAA or NIT bid.

DEPAUL BLUE DEMONS SEASON IN REVIEW

Chicago - A lot can be said for team chemistry. With a solid core of players returning from a young squad that had gone 17-14 the previous season, the addition of talented junior college recruit Harold Wilks was only supposed to add to the team. Unfortunately, Wilks struggled to fit in and instead of taking two steps forward, the Blue Demons took one step back.

Wilks can not be solely blamed, as Eric McNeish contributed to a lot of the problems as well and there seemed to be a general level of turmoil in the dressing room on the whole. The work ethic that had defined the 2015-2016 Blue Demons was not there this season.

Ultimately, the performance as a whole was better than what it had been prior to coach Johnny Johnson's arrival. However, after three straight NCAA tournament appearances, the bar has been raised. Johnson has a good track record of being able to turn things around quickly, and if Wilks chooses to return, Johnson will be forced to work his magic and create a harmonious locker room.

What should help is that senior SG Eric McNeish moves on, who clashed quite a bit at times with Wilks. McNeish started for the first time this past year for 10 games at point guard. Throughout his Blue Demon career, he averaged 14.5 minutes per game along with 4.0 ppg.

Also gone is senior PF Mitchell Brand, who started the season at the small forward position but saw his playing time continually decrease as the season wore on.

The final player moving on is C Reggie Campbell. The walk-on joined the team two seasons ago and provided competent service off the bench in that time frame.

BLUE DEMONS BASKETBALL SEASON PREVIEW

Chicago - Heading into last season, the DePaul Blue Demons had quietly high expectations. The addition of highly touted junior college recruit Harold Wilks was supposed to take a team that had gone 17-14 the previous year to a new level.

However, as we know now, that was not the case. The team failed to gel and appeared to lack leadership. Constant infighting led to a 12-16 finish and the team missing the post season for the first time in four years.

For what it is worth, the Blue Demons lost very few players to graduate and return the core of that lineup. However, the question is, how will they perform.

Stowers and Wilks form a formidable back court while Burke can spell them off. Hart, Jordan, McClendon and Sullivan are four talented big man and coach Johnny Johnson should be able to swap them in and out at will.

All said, there is not a lack of talent and this group should be able to compete with most teams. The big question though is what the makeup of the dressing room will look like and whether this group of players will be able to come together as a unit.

WSSN Magazine is once again predicting the Blue Demons to finish 12th out of 16 in the Big East. Syracuse (#8), Notre Dame (#11), Louisville (#12), Conneticut (#22) and Georgetown (#25) are the favourites amongst the big east.

School officials are hoping for a record above .500 and for the Blue Demons to stay out of the Big East basement.

BLUE DEMONS HOPE TO PUT 2017 BEHIND THEM

Chicago - The year 2017 is a year that the DePaul Blue Demons will want to quickly forget. After going 7-10 in Big East Conferene play last season followed by an opening round Big East playoff loss and no post-season play, the Blue Demons were hoping for a strong start this fall.

However, that has not been the case as DePaul opened the season with five straight losses and lost last night for the third time in three games to drop their overall pre-conference record to 3-8.

The supposedly vaunted 1-2 punch of Harold Wilks and Tim Stowers has been merely average, having their good nights and bad nights. Outside of perhaps Donny McClendon, few others have performed well.

"Damn right I'm upset," proclaimed Blue Demons coach Johnny Johnson at a press conference following last night's game. "We've been awful. It's one thing to lose games. But to just go out there and go through the motions and put in a half assed effort? Embarrassing."

The Blue Demons have not missed the Big East Conference tournament since Johnson's first season behind the bench, but if their pre-conference play is any indication, this year will mark the second time in his tenure.

BLUE DEMONS LAND TWO OF MIDWEST'S BEST RECRUITS


While they have struggled off the court, coach Johnny Johnson has continued to have success in the recruiting department, with two of the Midwest's top ranked players committing to DePaul for next season.

SF Dante Fortson is a versatile scorer from Nordonia High in Macedonia, OH. Fortson, 6'7" and 213 pounds, is also very talented defensively and was ranked #3 overall in the Midwest amongst recruits and #23 overall nationally.

The 6'10" C Lee Johnson is also considered one of the Midwest's best, ranked #13 in the region as well as #66 in the nation. The Mesisk (MI) Consolidated star is considered a great leader and rebounder.

SG Thaydeus Pack is the final player to commit to the Blue Demons for next year. The talented defender will join the team from Immaculate High in Danbury, CT and was ranked #97 nationally.

BLUE DEMONS SNEAK INTO BIG EAST PLAYOFFS

Chicago - A loss against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (17-10, 10-6) last night could have proved very costly for the DePaul Blue Demons (9-18, 6-10). Fortunately due to a complex tie-breaking formula, the Blue Demons will sneak into the Big East tournament and keep their NCAA tournament dreams alive.

DePaul finished in a tie with five other teams for the final three spots, but thanks to the tie-break formula the Blue Demons earn the #10 seed and an opening round matchup with the South Florida Bulls (13-14, 8-8). The Blue Demons defeated South Floriday 66-65 earlier this season in Chicago.

After opening their Big East schedule at 5-5, DePaul slid throughout January, barely hanging on to a playoff spot. The Blue Demons have lost in the opening round of the Big East tournament for the past two seasons and will look to change that trend this year.

DEPAUL BLUE DEMONS SEASON IN REVIEW

Chicago - After returning all five players who finished last season as starters, expectations were once again increased for the DePaul Blue Demons. They were expected to have a formidable back-court in the form of Harold Wilks and Tim Stowers and a number of good big men. Unfortunately, what looked good on paper failed to materialize on the hard court.

Stowers and Wilks were good but not great and failed to compliment each other. While the in-fighting that plagued last season was mostly gone, the team still appeared to lack chemistry. In fact, despite their talents, Johnson had to insert sophomore PG Mitch O'Neil into the starting lineup and replace Wilks to maximize their talents.

SG Harold Wilks will move on after two up and down seasons with the Blue Demons. The troubled, albeit talented, guard came to DePaul two seasons ago but brought with him a number of off court problems, clashing with teammates and coaches on various occasions. He did start 35 games over the past two seasons and did manage to contribute 10.4 ppg in that span.

Perhaps a bigger loss could be C Donny McClendon. The four year starter played in 116 games, starting 107 of them. He had the best year of his stay here this past season, averaging 9.2 ppg to go along with 6.0 rpg.

SF Phil Louis also moves on. Remember him? That's alright if you don't, as Louis has spent the past two and a half seasons on academic suspension, not playing since partway through his sophomore season.

SF Kerry Clark is the final player moving on. The senior made the team as a walk-on this past season and managed to see the court in eight games.

BLUE DEMONS OFF-SEASON NOTES


WILKS SELECTED IN FIRST ROUND OF NBA DRAFT

Harold Wilks was selected in the first round of the NBA Draft last night, 28th overall by the Dallas Mavericks. Wilks went through a tumultuous two seasons at DePaul after being a junior college recruit. Wilks clashed at times with players and coaches, including being benched at the end of the 2017 season and being relegated to the bench near the end of last season.

"I'm happy for Harold," commented Johnny Johnson. "He's definitely had his struggles, but I saw quite a bit of maturity from two years ago to this last season and that's the attitute and mentality he needs to take with him to the NBA. If he can do that, I think he can have success."


BLUE DEMONS RECRUIT CLASS RANKS #15 IN THE NATION

The trio of Dante Forston, Lee Johnson and Thaydeus Pack helped earn the DePaul Blue Demons the WSSN #15 ranking of incoming recruiting classes.

This is Johnson's second top 25 class at DePaul, his second being three years ago when Tim Stowers, Mitch O'Neill, Mike Hart and Matt Jordan joined the team. Stowers and Hart will be heading into their senior seasons while Jordan and O'Neil were each red-shirts their fresh season and thus will only be heading into their junior years.

Louisville, Pittsburgh, Marquette and Cinncinati join DePaul in the top 25.


SULLIVAN OPTS TO TRANSFER, JOINS THE IRISH IN SOUTH BEND

Ryan Sullivan, who was scheduled to be heading into his junior year with the Blue Demons, has opted to take his game cross conference to rival Notre Dame next season.

The talented Sullivan has career best games of 19 points and 13 rebounds and was expected to be a big part of the Blue Demons next season. He has started 37 games over the past two years, primarily at PF and was expected to slide into the center role this season.

While no reason was given, it is believed that Sullivan had off court dealings with both coaches and players which ultimately led to his decision.

BLUE DEMONS BASKETBALL SEASON PREVIEW

Chicago - After posting a 69-57 record in his first four seasons at DePaul, including three NCAA tournament trips, the Athletic Department felt comfortable in giving Johnson a five year contract extension. One has to wonder if they would make that same decision today.

After signing that extension two years ago, Johnson and the Blue Demons have gone 21-35, including missing the post season twice in a row.

While the team does bring in an incredibly talented recruiting class, one has to wonder if this year will be much better. Gone is the very reliable Donny McClendon who, well not a star, was very consistent and dependable. The player they had pegged to replace him, Ryan Sullivan, transferred out this spring.

That leaves the centre spot in the hands of frosh Lee Johnson, who comined with SF Dante Fortson and red shirt freshman Jeff Oliver, have the makings of a very green starting five.

The bright spot is Stowers, who has arguably been the teams best player the past two seasons. Jordan and Burke are both veterans who should help contribute.

The big absence is that of junior PG Mitch O'Neil, who took over the starting reighns part way through last season. Word out of camp is that he was outplayed by Oliver, Burke and Martin and will need to fight his way back up the depth chart to see any playing time.

Despite the very young lineup, WSSN Magazine is predicting a bit of a turnaround this season for the Blue Demons, ranking them 7th in the Big East.

Perenial Big East and national favourites, Syracuse (#7), Louisville (#12), Pittsburgh (#18), Connecticut (#19) and Notre Dame (#25) are amongst the teams ranked ahead of DePaul.

BLUE DEMONS PUT DISAPPOINTING START BEHIND THEM

Chicago - The DePaul Blue Demons have seemingly put a slow start to the season behind them, defeating the Wisconsin Badgers for their 6th win in a row. After opening the season at 1-6, the victory improves their record to a much more respectable 7-6.

The highlight of the season thus far has been the team's Sunshine Shootout tournament victory in Miami earlier this season, including a win over #9 ranked Memphis which kick-started their current run.

The turnaround coincides directly with the re-insertion of junior Mitch O'Neil into the starting point guard role. O'Neil did not see action in 3 of the first 7 games and averaged only 10 minutes per game in the four he did play. Since that point, he has started every game and capped off his hot play with 10 assists last night against the Badgers.

TALNTED RECRUITS CONTINUE TO FLOCK TO DePAUL


While the Blue Demons may have struggled on the court the past few years, it has apparently not impacted Johnson's ability to draw the Midwest's best players to the Windy City. DePaul recently announced the signing of five players to Letters of Intent.

"I'm excited with what we have coming in," noted Johnson. "At the same time, gaining five players means that we are also losing a number of talented players, and that's a bit of a scary thought."

BLUE DEMONS AMONGST BIG EAST TOURNAMENT FAVORITES

Chicago - For the first time in a number of seasons, the DePaul Blue Demons (19-10, 12-4) will have to be considered serious contenders for the Big East tournament crown. DePaul wrapped up their regular season conference schedule with a 82-68 victory over Georgetown (12-17, 4-12) last night for their 18th win in their last 23 games.

"It feels good to be where we are," noted coach Johnny Johnson. "Especially considering the past two seasons and how we started the season, I don't think very many people though we would be where we are. But those guys did a great job playing together and now it's time to carry that over to the post season."

The victory means that the Blue Demons will finish alone in third in the Big East standings, behind West Virginia (20-7, 13-3) and #5 ranked Syracuse (25-2, 15-1). It also earns the Blue Demons a bye in the Big East tournament opening round.

DePaul will await the winner of the Pittsburgh (19-11, 9-7) and Seton Hall (13-14, 7-9). DePaul holds an earlier victory this season over Seton Hall while they did not meet up with Pittsburgh this season.

ORANGE OUST BLUE DEMONS IN BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP

Chicago - After advancing to their second Big East tournament final under coach Johnny Johnson, the DePaul Blue Demons came up short in their bid for a conference championship much like they did five years ago, this time losing to the Syracuse Orange 76-59.

For the third time this season, it was former Norton Award and Big East player of the year, Pat Stewart doing the damage. After posting 28 points and 24 points in Syracuse's two victories over DePaul earlier this season, the junior shooting guard dropped 21 points along with 7 rebounds en route to the Orange victory.

The score was not necessarily reflective of the game, which saw 19 lead changes and Syracuse leading 38-36 at the half. However, the Orange poured it on late as they captured their third Big East championship in the last five years and secured themselves a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

BLUE DEMONS EARN #7 SEED IN EAST BRACKET

Many thought the Big East playoff run would have helped DePaul's ranking, but many around campus are dissapointed after earning a #7 seed in the East and a first round matchup in Greesnboro, NC against Okalahoma (18-13, 8-8 Big Twelve).

The Blue Demons have accumulated a 20-6 record, including three losses to Syracuse, after opening the season at 1-6. Apparently this was not enough for the committee.

"We have gotten much respect all year," noted coach Johnny Johnson. "We should've been ranked top 25 at some point, but never were, so it doesn't surprise me about the low seed in the tourney."

GATORS PUT END TO BLUE DEMONS TOURNAMENT HOPES

Greensboro, NC - After an opening round victory against Oklahoma, the DePaul Blue Demons fell in the round of 32 yesterday to the #4 ranked Florida Gators (29-6, 12-4 SEC) by a score of 69-61.

The Gators, the East's #2 seed, pressured DePaul into committing 22 turnovers which proved to be the difference. The game enjoyed 18 lead changes with a first half three point buzzer beater by Kendall Renchner giving Florida a 32-31 first half lead.

That momentum carried over into the second half, helping Florida to open up an eventual 14 point lead late in the game before DePaul closed to within a respectable margin. Freshman centre Lee Johnson was the Blue Demons best player, putting back 13 points along with 8 rebounds against 7' frosh Boney Jackson.

DEPAUL BLUE DEMONS SEASON IN REVIEW

Chicago - After a 1-6 start to the season, it looked like it was going to be another year of struggles for the DePaul Blue Demons. However, a switch at point guard helped turn the team around, propelling them to a 22 win season, along with a Big East tournament final appearance and a trip to the NCAA tournament.

Not only did the course of the season see the emergence of PG Mitch O'Neil into one of the Big East's best ball distributors, finishing second in assists, it also saw the emergence of freshman SF Dante Fortson and C Lee Johnson.

Not much was expected of this talented young bunch, but they managed to come together much quicker than anticipated and once again have Chicago college basketball fans buzzing heading into next season.

However, the team will have to do without SG Tim Stowers, who has been one of the teams most consistent contributors the past few seasons. Stowers became a starter midway through his freshman season and was the teams best player in a few lean years. He averaged 10.4 ppg over his career at DePaul, appearing in 117 games.

Also moving on is starting PF Mike Hart, who has also appeared in 117 games, starting 86 of them. Hart leaves with a career 5.5 ppg average to go along with 4.5 rpg.

PG Trent Burke, started all 29 games as a freshman but only has 12 starts since that time, also graduates. Burke was plagued by bad turnovers but was a solid contributer from the bench.

The final player moving on is PF Shannon Block, who averaged 7.3 mpg in 79 career games at DePaul.
