Das Boot and Platoon is a tough matchup.

5 of these were legitimately difficult choices for me.

No chance against Die Hard (which I do love), but Ran is such an incredible film. The grand battle sequence at the end is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in a movie.

I didn't think Gone With the Wind would be going out so easily.

The first half of Full Metal Jacket is brilliant. Once they get to the actual war, it's mostly average and not nearly as compelling as many other Vietnam films from that era.

Yeah Ran/Die Hard is a bad matchup, but Ran is my favourite movie of all time, so it's an easy pick for me, as fun as Die Hard is.

Grave of the Fireflies is the most emotionally devastating movie I've ever seen, and I can't imagine watching it a 2nd time, but it deserves to be on lists like this because of how powerful it is.

Agreed. It's two very different movies all in one.

I don't think FMJ was THAT realistic. I think that's why people liked it. It had that Kubrick weirdness in there. But I think the massive praise it gets is for one reason alone: Vincent D'Nofrio. Dude is scary brilliant.

Without R. Lee Ermey's performance I'm not sure FMJ's first half ends up as beloved for a lot of fans. Between him and V D'N they delivered an incredible 1-2 punch.

yeah people praised Ermey's performance of a drill sergeant but meh I can throw a bran muffin and hit another drill sergeant performance of the same caliber. I myself prefer Warren Oates in Stripes.

I mean you aren't wrong. That was a big deal at the time. I don't know if movies before that spent that much time on dramatic depictions of basic training. Plenty of comedies for sure.
And the resolution of those two characters was electric.

I'm really enjoying this. How were the original seedings determined?

I just went with the IMDB Top 250 (at the time the tournament started) and then rounded out the bracket with the top movies from Rolling Stone magazine readers poll of the top cult movies. These ended up being Rocky Horror, Spinal Tap, Harold and Maude, The Wall, Evil Dead and Phantom of the Paradise.

It worked for what it was, a very fast way to put together a set of tournament seedings without having to put in any extra work. There are some flaws and I have a few ideas for improvement regarding any future tournaments, either movie or television.

For me, the toughest choice was Full Metal Jacket vs. Gone With The Wind. As most of you feel, I love the first half, and the second half is pretty meh. GWTW is a classic, but I always thought it was a bit bloated. For me, this was a battle between two good, but not great, movies.

Wall vs. Schindler, Annie Hall vs. Indiana Jones, Das Boot vs. Platoon, and Oz vs. Beautiful Life were really tough as well.

I had a similar feeling. Two good movies. Two important movies. Two overrated movies. I went with FMJ, but I was close to flipping a coin.
