Tiger Words 14: FOFC Country Club set up
For those of you who have (or will have) Tiger Woods 14, I've set up a FOFC Country Club, for tournaments and the like:
Country Club Name: FOFC Password: Trout (not sure if the first T should be capitalized)

What settings are you running Foz? I will probably be picking this one up at some point in the next couple of weeks.

I'd like to do this but have a couple of (hopefully not stupid) questions.
How do the tournaments work? Does everybody have to be on at the same time or do you just play and see how you stacked up against everybody else? What other benefits or features are there as part of a country club? I'm taking tomorrow off of work so I may go pick up the game then. I'm definitely interested in something like this. |

does the country club work interchangeability regardless of what console (or pc?) you have?

FYI, "CostCaptain.com" had the Historic Edition for $61.99 with free shipping. Best Buy matched that for me (although since it's not on the 'approved' list of e-tailers for price match, YMMV). Four extra courses plus an expanded Augusta for basically the same price as the regular edition.
I think they had the regular edition $8 off also. |

SackAttack joined me, and we played a couple rounds. I kicked his ass on the first round.. we won't mention what happened after he found that the Historic Edition gives him some really nice clubs (that I had been using already) in the second round.
St Andrews.. man if you put the ball in the wrong place on that course you are FUBARED. And tournaments just have a set time limit (like 8 hours, 24 hours, etcetera). It'd be FUN to get everyone on at the same time, but not mandatory,

I'm getting negative 'pin xp bonus' every time I play that's wiping out my base XP. I'd like to know if others have this issue. I've seen a few mentions on the tech support forums but no response from EA.

Ok, it's set up:
The FOFC Country Club Presents: The St Andrews Challenge You have 18 holes at one of the classic courses in the Open rotation. A fierce Scottish wind is going to play merry hob with your shot. Can you tame this Scottish terror? (note, this is a One Try tournament. there is no restarting allowed.)

Wish I could get xp for putts that get within 2 feet of the hole. I figure I have 12 of those a round at this point. Maybe it will be better as my golfer gets better, but it's been frustrating.

What difficulty level are you guys using? I started out of the box, but was scoring too many super low rounds -- I shot a 59 in the first round of my career mode. I bumped up a level, and the loss of "spin" really removes a tremendous advantage. Now I can't get past Q-School!
I quietly joined the FOFC club earlier this week. Does difficulty level play a role? Are we all on the same level, or is it based on our local settings? |

I have found the rough, particularly the second cut, to be much more punishing than earlier versions (or real life). I'm still having a hard time getting used to sand play -- it just doesn't feel like there is consistency as to how far you have to hit it to get it out. |

I'm playing out of the box difficulty, but I'm not that good. I agree that the spin helps in a huge way.
I just finished the St Andrews Challenge. I shot even par. I noticed you can select most golfers but I used my career guy. Is that what's expected here? It would kind of suck to think others are using Tiger. Also, I saw you can discard your score at the end which kind of sucks. With my skill level I was just thrilled to shoot par so I was happy to submit it. I swear it felt like putting on the side of a hill on some holes. |

I started with the out of the box difficulty and switched to Tour Pro. I'm finding Tour Pro to be more than enough of a challenge with my created golfer. I don't know if it kicks the level back down to do the club tournament. I'll be using my career guy for any tournaments here. |

I'm using my created golfer as well, I'd like to mandate it, but there's no way to check
Also, if you're having trouble playing out of the rough/sand, use your right stick to move the impact point closer to the middle of the ball, usually when it's buried in the rough or the sand, you're hitting the top of the ball, which provides lowered distance and height.

BTW, the reason that this is a "One Try" tournament is just that, you can set the amount of tries/submittals in setting a tournament up

i ahvent played this since 02-04 or so (the one with tiger woods on the cover, i think)
has it changed a lot? i think the last version i played changed putting in a significant way, though i dont remember how. until then, shooting in the 50s was very easy. |

If you know the tips and tricks, and have all the helpers, it can be easy, but you can also shoot very badly.
Did my St Andrews Tourney round, was real hot on the front nine, finishing the front nine six under, but the greens and a couple bad decisions (btw, screw the greens on 10 and 17, I felt lucky to double bogey them), meant I entered 18 1 under.. I was lucky to hit my putt on 18, so I'm in the clubhouse at 2 under.

Do we need to decide if we want to use created golfers and set a level limit? Based on the long drive stats that popped up, I know that Foz was bombing drives 70+ yards further than my level 20 golfer was able to hit. I'm going to keep on using my created golfer, but I won't be much competition for awhile if the power disparity is that severe.
Would we also think about moving to Tour Pro to get rid of spin and putt preview? As a house rule, I don't use either. |

I completely forgot to check for spin and putt preview until the fourth hole since I haven't been using them on Tour Pro level. That's pretty much why I started double-triple-bogey and completely flummoxed my round. Don't know if the wind conditions were any different for me and Ajaxab this morning, but I had a 20-mph wind in my face the entire front nine. The wind pushed a ball OB and another in the water on the first three holes.
Once I got going and remember I could use the cheats, these calmed down. I got that wind behind me on 18 and nearly drove the freakin' green. Ajaxab, I'm pretty sure Foz sad he was using his created golfer, but he's also using the Masters clubs that come with the Historic edition (me too). If you don't have them, the pretty much blow by the clubs a level 20 golfer has. They easily add 30 yards to your drives. Last edited by kcchief19 : 04-06-2013 at 01:43 PM. |

I finished -6 with a level 10 golfer and the Masters clubs. I don't mind giving up the clubs but ain't no way my piddly ass dude is going to be competitive in 20 mph winds without them.

Props for the -6 with a level 10 guy. That was impressive. I was using the Masters clubs and there was one hole where I hit the ball as far as I could and still couldn't even reach the fairway into the wind. It could be because my created golfer is control and not power based, but I can't imagine who much worse it would be without the clubs. |

I think the last Tiger Woods I played was 12, and I enjoyed it for a couple days, but once the difficulty of my pro career went up a touch the putting was like trying to putt on ice, and I'd end up rage quitting nearly every game in total frustration after the inevitable 8-putt hole, and I didn't seem to be alone in that frustration (though I do kinda suck).
The putting still sounds like it can be pretty tough in this one, does anybody/everybody have the same complaints about this version, or has it been reigned in enough to keep it fun?

The last version I played was '12. Putting on some courses was like putting on ice. I think greens are a bit stickier on this version than that.
What I hated about '12 were the carnival pin placements. During some final rounds, the pins would be placed at ridiculous places on the green. If you missed, you were pretty much going to roll at least another 10-15 feet because of the slope. I've only really seen one of these so far in the few rounds I've played. Maybe others who have played more rounds than I have would know if the carnival pins are still in the game. |

My guy is also control, which probably helped with those winds. Control isn't affected by them nearly as much as power is, so if you have any kind of a feel for where/how to aim, you can survive. But getting low scores is still tough if you're hitting into headwinds because it's tougher to reach the green in regulation. |
