suggestions for a WW2 turn based strategy game?

i am looking for a good WW2 game...something like steel panthers that i can run larger scale battles across an entire theatre of operations...i actually loaded up SPWaW the other day and it is horribly out of date (unfortunately).

anyone have any thoughts on a more current game along the same lines?

thanks

It's not turn based (but close - paradox game), but there's always Hearts of Iron 3.

everything i saw on that said it was an RTS, which i guess i could hit pause when i cant pay attention to it. (assuming there is a pause)

You can pause at any time, so you can make it as RTS or turn-based as you want. It's really up to you. All Paradox games are like that.

Yeah, you can go ultra ultra ultra slow, too. Basically, you can speed through the early pre-war buildups, and once you get into wartime, you crank down the speed (and pause whenever) and strategize. It never really feels like an RTS - you're never rushed to do things.

excellent...when i think RTS i think something like Age of Empires or Rise of Nations, so this sounds like it might be what i am looking for (want to have it running on my laptop so i can play a few minutes during breaks from work)

It's more like Civ 5 with a running clock that can be stopped at any time to make as many or as few moves/changes as you'd like. I would note that the game is generally a bit more complicated than something like Civ, but that may be what you're looking for.

Not sure if it fits the large scale battles your looking for, but Unity of Command is the only recent turn based WWII game I can think of.

I absolutely cannot play "RTS" games at all, a miserable experience for me when I've tried ... but I'll echo the others about how HOI does NOT play like what I think of as "RTS". Takes just a very little getting used to clicking when you should in order to pause & turn it into a very turn-based feel. I'd call it completely comfortable in fairly short order, even for me as someone who hates RTS.

If you go to paradox's HOI3 forums, and read some of the after action reports there, you'll learn quite a few things.

Think of it more like the turns can be exactly as long as you want them to be. Just hit the space bar when you want to start another "turn".
