BBCF: The Ospreys Invade the Big East

This is my attempt to get into BBCF. I tried recently and found it rather boring. However, not doing a dynasty for EHM made that game boring too. Sometimes, for whatever reason, I have more fun playing certain sims when I keep a dynasty, "journal" if you will, of my play and for other sims, I have more fun playing if I don't. So, we'll see how this turns out.

I used the little guide SD wrote in the BBCF 1.1 thread for making a new team. If I made any mistakes, this will turn out to be a very short dynasty (and I'll try again).

I did as SD did in taking Temple out of the game. I created my Stockton Ospreys in their place (and had to edit a city. Just changed the name of a NJ city and kept everything the same). I moved South Florida out of the Big East (made them Independant) and moved the Ospreys into the Big East, where their new rival will be Rutgers. I left the presitge at 35.

Another change I made is that all conferences will now have Championship Games. Should make the end of the season a bit more interesting.

So begins my attempt at BBCF (and hope that I didn't mess anything up too bad when editing the .dat files)

Since BBCF doesn't have simple text outputs, I'm going to be pasting the HTML outputs here. Which means the posts will have lots of links the do not work. Also, ignore the (S) deisgnation for right now as I have not set up my depth chart yet.

A Closer Look...

At QB
Albert Chandler will be my starting QB for a couple of seasons. And freshman Edward Martinez could develope into a capable backup.

At RB
Junior Brian Ramos is the starter. Freshman Frank Mason looks like he'll develope into a good backup. I like to depend on the running game, so I'll be looking hard for the best RB I can land during recruiting.

At Receivers
Sophmore Brian King and Freshman Michael Sherman will be my 1-2 punch at the WR position for a good while. Ronnie Baird is "meh" at TE. Hopefully freshman Jason Babcock will be ready next season to take over.

All in all, some good, young talent at the skill positions.

At the OL
OT: Not happy with the tackle position. Leo McCloud looks like he'll be decent, but I need another good OT.
OG: Senior James Keith looks to be adequate, but he's the only talent I have at G. I will need to focus heavily on getting 2 good guards during recruiting.
C: Freshman Felipe White might develope into a decent C.

All in all, really bad at OL. Will be doing some heavy recruiting there. My QB and RB will get killed if I try any plays that need to develope. So fast developing runs (nothing fancy) and short passing will have to be how I run my offense this season

At the DL
DE: William Bates and John Washington look like they will be adequate in a season or two. I'll try to grab a DE if I can during recruiting.
DT: Freshmen Clifford Hare and Aubrey Howell need to develope quickly. I'm extremely weak here.

At the LB
ILB: Nothing to even look at here. Just bad. bad, bad.
OLB: Senior Thomas Jones is good, and Freshman Jacob Perez will be good. I need another OLB to replace Jones next year.

At the DB
CB: A couple of players who might be decent later, but nothing here to write home about.
S: David Hall and Harry Silverman are two juniors that look like they can hold their own. They'll need to with my defense...

As a defense first kind of guy, my defense just is not up to snuff. I will be spending most of my recruiting budget on defense. This is just terrible

At ST
Well, I need a kicker and I need a punter....

Week 1: at South Florida

My strategy
On Offense: USF runs a 3-4 and has a pretty good NT (10/10) lining up over my tomato can of a center. Running up the middle will probably get stuffed by this NT. Considering that USF's LB's and DE's aren't as good as this NT, I set my strat to the OR (Outside Run) standrd gameplan provided by the game. I might dig into the gameplans later.

For the the strat part, I just hit suggest and go to the defense.

On Defense: Their QB is 7/11 and the #1 WR is 11/11. The run a Run N Gun style offense. Their offensive line, other than their 10/10 Center, is pretty bad. If only I had the defense to take advantage. But I don't. So, I'm going to just run standard Pass defense plan provided by the game.

I hit suggest again for defense strat, but I move up Thomas Jones' (OLB, 10/10) Blitzing tendency. I also don't like the idea of blitzing my safeties, so they are both set to 0.

A Closer Look At The South Florida Game

The Good
We only committed 4 penalties and the passing game seemed to be on. We also won the turnover battle, recovering 3 fumbles and 1 interception to just 1 fumble given. We also held their "star" receiver, Billy Wright, to just 2 receptions for 25 yards.

The Bad
3rd Down efficiency, 3-18. Just not good enough.

The Ugly
Only 8 yards total rushing....8 yards rushing....Ramos ran 16 times for a total of -1 yards. Ugh.

Notable Performances
OLB Thomas Jones - 7 tackles, 5 assists, 2 hurries, 1 force fumble, 1 pass defensed

Week 3: at North Texas (0-2)

My Strategy
On Offense: North Texas runs a 4-4 on defense. They have a decent DE (A. Collins 8/8) and no one with any ability at the DT. THey also have 1 ok OLB (R. Hayes 7/11) and another OLB a step down from him (W. Richey 6/6). The state of their ILB is worse.

They have 1 good CB (R. Donaldson 10/10) and no one at the safety position.

I use the IR stock gameplan. I edited a few values so that my team would run up the middle more and not take nearly as many chances down the feild on 2nd and short and 3rd and short. The more I look at these stock gameplans, the more I know I'll need to edit them.

For strategy, I hit suggest again. This time, I don't have my QB run at all, I tone down the WR end arounds and I don't have my FB run to the outside. I also up the amount my RB and TE are targeted on short passes.

On Defense They run a vertical passing offense. According to the preview, they run single-back, shotgun and quads most of the time. Their QB (9/9) is questionable with a bruised kidney. They have one ok WR (8/11), and he is listed as questionable as well. Their TE is their best receiver (9/10). One good T and one good G (9/10 and 9/11 respectively), and their tackle is listed as Doubtful. Their offense is completely banged up.

I set my gameplan to the Pass stock gameplan and leave everything as is.

For strategy, I again set both safeties to 0. The game suggest them both at 20+. That seems kind of absurd to me, so I'm guessing the suggest button goes off just ability. My NDB is actually pretty good (7/11) compared to the LBs, so I up the use of the nickel a lot. The Dime replaces a LB with a really bad CB, so I'm also lowering the amount that the Dime is called.

Injuries
DE Franklin is Probable with a skull fracture (that doesn't sound good....)
OLB Perez is Questionable with a torn tendon to his forearm. He'll be sitting out this game. (which puts a really bad LB on the field as the starter...)

The Game
Key Matchup North Texas QB Ben Roy vs. Stockton's Secondary.

A Closer Look at the North Texas Game

The Good
3rd Down Eff. was better (7-13), Rushing was a lot better too (174 yards). Chandler tossed 2 TDs and 1 INT. Decent, average numbers. For this team, average is good. Also, held them to 0-3 for Red Zone Eff.

The Bad
Their offense was totally banged up and we still gave up 400 yards.

The Ugly
Nothing too ugly to report.

Notable Performances
Player of the Game: S David Hall, 12 tackles (7-5), 2 sacks (even though he wasn't supposed to be blitzing!?)
RB Ramos - 26 carries, 107 yards

Injury Report
DE Maurice Franklin is recovering from an injury to his Head (Skull Fracture). He seems to be progressing well and we recommend playing him this week.

OLB Jacob Perez is recovering from an injury to his Forearm (Torn Tendon). He seems to be progressing well and we recommend playing him this week.

My Strategy
Their Defense: They run a 4-3
At DE: Both starters are 10/10
At DT: One is 10/10, two others are 7 Currently.
At ILB: 13/14
At OLB: 11/11, they are weak at the other OLB position (5/5). Their 6/11 player is Doubtful.
At CB: 12/12, 3/11. They are weak on one side at CB
S: 12/12, 7/11.

On Offense: Ouch. My O-Line can not handle their DL and ILB (and 1 of their OLB). Lots of short passes here as I will look to attack their weak CB and weak OLB.

The Offense: Vertical Passing. Singleback, Shotgun and Quads (disregarding FB)
At QB: 10/11 is Probable
At RB: 9/11 is Questionable. 6/11 Backup
At TE: 8/13
At WR: 12/18, 12/12, 9/9
At OT: 9/9, 5/13 (11/11 Player on Academic Suspension)
At OG: 12/12, 8/14 (Questionable), 6/11 Backup
At C: 6/12

On Defense: Will again run primarily a Nickel defense. This time I'm going to load up on zone and hold back on the blitzing. If I go man to man on this team, they'll tear me apart. Well, they'll probably do that anyway.

Injury Report
OLB Jacob Perez is recovering from an injury to his Forearm (Torn Tendon). He seems to be progressing well and we recommend playing him this week.

My Strategy
Their Defense: They run a 3-4
At DE: 10/13, 10/10
At NT: 7/7
At ILB: 12/16, 8/9
At OLB: 6/10, 8/8
At CB: 9/13, 7/8
At S: 9/14, 8/14

On Offense Good overall defense, a bit weaker in the secondary so I'll be using the same strat as last week. Going to load up on the short passes, but this time I won't be targeting Ramos nearly as much.

Their Offense: They run a Balanced Offense
At QB: 7/7
At RB: 7/13
At FB: 8/8
At TE: 9/12
At WR: 11/11, 4/13
At OT: 11/11, 5/10
At OG: 10/10, 8/9
At C: 10/10

On Defense I'm going to have to blitz some since my DL will not get much pressure on the QB by themselves. Robert Martin (11/11 WR) is really the only player that scares me. Wish it were possibly to single out a player and tell me defense to double cover him.

Injury Report
RB Frank Mason is currently battling an injury to his Foot (Fracture). He is getting better and able to play, but you might want to sit him out one more week.

Academic Suspension
The following Stockton players are now suspended:
QB Micheal Turner
WR Michael Sherman
OT Leo Mccloud

There goes one of our receivers....

Strategy
Their Defense The run a 4-6
DE: 12/12, 8/13
DT: 12/14, 4/15
ILB: 11/11
OLB: 8/10 (Doubtful), 8/11 (Backup 6/11)
CB: 11/11, 7/11
S: 8/13, 8/11

They have a lot of potentially good young players. Their line is a bit scary. Another game where I'll need to go to the air, I think.

On Offense: My strat is the same as the previous 2 weeks. Lots and lots of short passes. With their weakness at the OLB positions, I wil also try more outside runs than normal.

Their Offense They run the Option
QB: 6/15 (Not that good running)
RB: 13/20 (Ouch...) Backup: 15/15 (Double ouch...)
FB: 11/11
TE: 11/12
WR: 14/14, 7/9
OT: 8/10, 8/8
OG: 11/12 (Doubtful), 7/11 (Probable), Backup: 5/8
C: 12/12 (Questionable) Backup: 4/5

Banged up OL. Very good at the skill positions

On Defense In this game, I'm going all out to try to attack that injured offensive line. I'm going to double up on the blitzing. I'm going into the game like a wounded dog and I'm going to attack, attack, attack.

Key Matchup
Stockton WR Brian King vs. West Virgina Secondary

Thoughts on the West Virginia Game

Well, we kept it respectable. Hey, from the start of the 2nd quarter on, we won! But we got destoryed that first quarter. But we kept it together and were never really out of the game until the 4th quater when we couldn't answer their TD with one of our own. We were able to put some things together, but we lost the turnover battle with 2 picks to no turnovers for them.
