No chance against Die Hard (which I do love), but Ran is such an incredible film. The grand battle sequence at the end is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in a movie.

The first half of Full Metal Jacket is brilliant. Once they get to the actual war, it's mostly average and not nearly as compelling as many other Vietnam films from that era.

Yeah Ran/Die Hard is a bad matchup, but Ran is my favourite movie of all time, so it's an easy pick for me, as fun as Die Hard is.
Grave of the Fireflies is the most emotionally devastating movie I've ever seen, and I can't imagine watching it a 2nd time, but it deserves to be on lists like this because of how powerful it is.

I don't think FMJ was THAT realistic. I think that's why people liked it. It had that Kubrick weirdness in there. But I think the massive praise it gets is for one reason alone: Vincent D'Nofrio. Dude is scary brilliant.

For me, the toughest choice was Full Metal Jacket vs. Gone With The Wind. As most of you feel, I love the first half, and the second half is pretty meh. GWTW is a classic, but I always thought it was a bit bloated. For me, this was a battle between two good, but not great, movies.
Wall vs. Schindler, Annie Hall vs. Indiana Jones, Das Boot vs. Platoon, and Oz vs. Beautiful Life were really tough as well. |
