Five Strides On the Banked Track - Season I

This thread will be used for the game threads for the NRDL: See the other thread for the draft:

Our first game of the season pits two NPC teams against each other, but it was a wild one:

Four Ejected as Rangers triumph over Chicago

At the Austin Rollerdome today, the first match of the NRDL season saw the Rangers outskate the visiting Demons 49-32 in a match that saw 11 penalties and four ejections handed out.

In the first period : Austin started four of the five jams, but Marino scored six points, three of which were assisted by a flying cross body check from Violet Taylor sending three Rangers skidding into the infield chairs, and Chicago led after 1, 6-5.

The key jam of the game came late in the second period, with the score tied at 8, where DiBernardi rocketed out on a jam, and a sudden shift of blocking schemes by the Rangers slowed down the pack so much that DiBernardi was able to blow by all the Chicago defense, and even managed to get another three on the second time around, and Austin led 16-8 after two.

Nothing was going right for the Demons, they tried slowing down the Ranger women in the third with a giant pileup in the center of the track, but Donna Beall, played Evil Knievel and leaped the fallen skaters and scored four points.

Frustrated, Maria "The Shark" Ferrante threw Rangers pivot Donna Beall into and threw the penalty box, earning her the first ejection of the night. After a final jam where both Meghan Miller (1) and Julie Todd (3) scored points for the Rangers, it was 24-12 Rangers after 3.

The men extended the lead, with DiBernardi scoring 10 points in the period, and as we entered the halftime break, it was 34-16 Rangers.

Austin started to play a slower game in the fifth, however, despite the fact that there were only two james, Chicago scored a pair on each of the jams, and they started to dream of a possible comeback, 34-20 after 5.

There was a general melee near the end of the period, and with so much screaming and hair pulling going on, the referee couldn't figure out who started it, so just sent the women back to the bench and hoped the men would be better behaved.

That turned out to be a foolish mistake.

Doyle "The Razor" Shick earned his first KO of the season, grabbing Stick Traylor by the head, and running him into one of the stanchions holding the railing up. Traylor was woozy but would return late in the game. "Shortly after that, "Al "Six Pack" Johnson grabbed one of the Rangers jammers helmets, and started hitting the Ranger player with it repeatedly... and Johnson would be the second Demon player to earn an early shower via the way of ejection.

Chicago cut the lead to 12 near the end of the period, but then it was time for a little payback, as the Rangers Ed "Monster" McGill saw Shick lining up yet another illegal hit, this time on the Rangers captain, and cut the Razor off at the pass with a tackle, that led to both teams queueing up for a donny brook. Referees and arena security were barely able to contain the teams from tearing each other apart. When the dust cleared and both teams sent back to the infield, Shick and McGill were both ejected.

In the last skating period for the women, the Demons cut it to 10, but Todd and Teresa Miller scored during a seven point jam to end the Demons threat. It was 44-27 entering the final 12 minutes.

In an ugly incident in the beginning of the final skating period, "Mean" Eugene Dixon earned himself a double penalty for first legwhipping a Rangers skater, and then arguing with the official afterwards. The depths of the ill will that the Demons rough-house tactics had earned from the fans was scene a couple minutes later, when Demons jammer Bobby Powers knocked a Rangers player into the infield and was all alone on the jam, but some overly enthusiastic fans threw plastic cups at Powers as he sped across a croner, and for safety purposes, the jam was called off.

The offending fans were ejected, and the fans warned that another such incident would mean the Rangers would forfeit the game. Chicago looked to make the score respectable, scoring five in a row, but in the final moments, DiBernardi and Bailey scored a five pointer, and the Rangers had their winning margin.

Can't wait to see the penalty and ejection list for your team fozzie.

Are there other stats like for the blockers and pivots? Like Blocks and assists and takedowns and stuff?

What I was doing was each time a player was mentioned, they got a "Mention" point for each track space they earned (or jam that they affected)

Tracking that on my match sheet I see that Chicago had 67 total "Mentions" and Austin 56. A lot of Austin's were "key" ones however, there was a couple times late when Chicago needed points, so they were trying for Power Jams that AUstin just snuck in and ran the jam on their own. Also, just because your team launches the jam doesn't mean you score..

There were 27 jams in the game, pretty close, 14-13 Austin on being lead jammer. However, the three big Jams (the 8 pointer by DiBernardi in the 2nd to break the tie, the 5+2 jam by the women in the 7th period and the 5 pointer by the two men jammers at the end).. that's 17 points right there. THat's the margin of victory.

And near the end, it was funny, Chicago kept getting one square away, and then action card or highlight reel result would pop up that says "Scuffle breaks out, referee stops play and warns skaters".

I wish I knew programming, the current method I have to get the teams into the board game involves printing the players, 8 to a sheet of paper, and then having to fold and cut them to make the individual playing cards. I'll have to see if someone can make me a program to just display it on the screen, then I can just use the Fast Action Cards and highlight reel book.

I'll try to get the other two matchups tonight.

More actually tommorrow. Unfortunately, on-call duty can be a harsh mistress sometimes. THe extra four hours I earned by working tonight is good.. but it does cut into the game playing time

Bombers grounded by Hitmen in 32 point rout

San Francisco had come to the Boston Center looking for a fight. They got one. They got one of Boston's blockers, Dolly Larson ejected (along with the Bombers Bunny Lee) for a 1st period fight... when in the second period they managed to KO Hitmen star pivot Steve "The Snake" Yarno for the rest of the game, they thought they were beating the Hitmen at their own game.

All it was, instead was the Hitmen getting ready to beat the Bombers at THEIR game instead.

Seven players scored for the Hitmen, ans they held the Bombers to just six points in the last six periods, winning in a laugher 50-18.

The key to the Hitmen's success? On the women's side, Carla "Big House" Booker was everywhere with 13 Mentions, and even jamming twice from the pivot position, scoring a full 5 pointer in the first, and then as if to prove it wasn't a joke , scoring another 4 in the fifth period.

One the men's side, Izulde Jestor led with 10 points, but Ace Idol decided that if the refs weren't going to send him to the box, he was going to do whatever he wanted to the Bomber's men.. and he did, including hitting a huge screamer (imagine a blocker turning around and hitting someone skating at them with a Lou Thesz press, if you're a wrestling fan) on Johnny Jay, who was scoreleass in six attempted jams for the Bombes.

The Hitmen didn't quit, going down by near 20 after 5, despite the Hitmen's dirty tricks (removing a section of padding on one part of the rail, and then deliberately running the Bombers men into that section of the rail three times in a row, before the ref ordered the padding replaced).. the Hitmen actually were skating 5 on 3 at one point in the 6th period when Bombers pivot Dave Mayes was in the box for arguing with the ref, and the Hitmen had caused a wipeout in the infield which meant that they had no fit subsitutes for the next three minutes), but the Hitmen failed to jam with their advantage.

Werewolves race to a big lead with Andretti, hold on for 35-20 win

The Minneapolis Werewolves made it three for three for home teams this week, and it was their women who made the difference, as they outscored the Legends Women 27-13 as the Werewolves beat New York 35-20, at the Lakes Rollercenter today.

Andretti had something to prove today, and she scored 11 of her game leading 13 points in the first period, sprung for two separate big five point jams by Werewolf MVP Bettie Rage (16 mentions). However, there was a scary moment in the first as well, as Rose Rosdahl, the star Legend skater, went flipping over the rail, and apparently hit her head on the way down.

The game was stopped, and local onsite paramedics had to take her to the hospital to be checked out. It was judged as a slight concussion, and she was released later in the evening. However, Rosdahl will probably miss the Legends next game.

New York battled back to score 4 in the first male skating period, making it 11-6 after 2, but another two five pointers (one from Sandy Claws in the 3rd, one from Wesley Avenger in the 4th) meant that the lead was a comfortable 25-11 at the half.

Depite being repeatedly substituted for Gary Brewer (as part of the Legends rotation policy at the pivot position, Stuart Henson did his best to keep the Legends in the game, as the King amassed a men's leading total of 13 mentions, but the Werewolf men skated defensively, knowing that the Legends had to come up with something truly spectacular to beat them.

On the women's side, Joanie Walling (10 points, 11 mentions) and Dee Dee Robinson (13 mentions) led the charge of the Legends in the second half. They outskated the Werewolf ladies to the tune of 7-0 in the fifth, and suddenly, the safe Werewolf lead was a precarious seven point run. However, the men pushed the lead back to nine, shutting out the Legends men in a low scoring sixth period, and when Claws launched another five point Werewolf special, the game was pretty much in the books.

New York (20)

Scoring:
Women: Walling 10, Ellenbogen 3
Men: Redding 5, Boronoski 2

Mentions:
Women:Robinson 13, Walling 11
Men: Henson 13, 3 with 5

Chicago meet their match (race) in wild loss to Boston

For the Roller Derby fan, this had everything. Blood, sweat and tears. Great comebacks, high drama, comebacks from injury, the referee being forced to eject multiple people, and at the end, Chicago's comeback was stymied in a single moment of madness, and Boston won the match race to break the 30-30 tie.

This game started off crazy, as the referee ejected the Demons star pivot and pet psycopath Doyle "The Razor" Shick, 11 seconds into the first men's skating period,. apparently Shick was trying to claim that he had injured his arms last week, but the referee ruled that the hard plastic guards around his arms were an attempt to injure the Hitmen skaters.

The Hitmen built a 22-10 lead, at halftime although it looked like they would be skating without their full compliment, as Jenny Jerome (who would still lead all Hitmen scorers with 12 points) was ejected in the 3rd for taunting, and Steve "The Snake" Yarno would be sent to the back after a collision with the rail left the Snake with the Crimson Mask of blood.

The smooth running Hitmen women's team threw a gear in the fifth period, as Carla "Big House Booker" (a game high 11 mentions), was ejected for misconduct. However, Yarno returned (head wrapped in gauze) while the women were skating in the fifth period, and in the sixth period, injured Demon blocker/pivot Al "Six Pack" Johnson, with a shove that sent him off the track, and due to a bad landing, Johnson appeared to seriously injure his knee. Johnson is expected to miss six weeks, and the Demons have apparently already petitioned the league to sign a replacement player.

However, while this was happening, Spence and Marino had cut into the lead, scoring 16 points in the two women's skating periods in the second half, and entering the final skating period only trailing 28-26.

In the final skating period, the Demons took their first lead in the game since 3-0, as a four point jam from McGuire gave them a 2 point lead, however, two seperate single point jams from Izulde Jestor tied it up.

In the final seconds, Jestor broke out on a power jam, and the Chicago skaters tried desperately to keep Jestor from passing any of them. Time and time again, "Mean" Eugene Dixon knocked down Jestor. With time running out, Jestor had apparently had earned the single point needed to win the game, but the referee ruled that the point did not count, as one of Jestor's skates was in the infield when he passed Dixon.

NRDL Rules state that ties are broken by a five lap match race, with the home team selecting whether the men or women skate the match race As the home team the Hitmen had the right to select, and seeing that they had an advantage in speed, chose Izulde Jestor as their representative.

The Demons sent out Eugene Dixon, and they took off.. Jestor looked to skate away, but Dixon used his strength to impede and bar Jestor's way. On the second lap, the Demons's skater seemingly had the advantage when he threw Jestor into the rail. The Hitmen skater managed to avoid flipping over, but obviously had the wind knocked out of him.

Dixon continued skating, and had just about lapped Jestor, when he noticed that Jestor hadn't fallen over the rail, and was trying to catch his breath. Thinking to finish off the Hitmen skater, he skated at full speed, obviously attempting to squash Jestor against the rail.

Unfortunately for him, Jestor saw this coming, and ducked, flipping Dixon over the rail and landing hard on the floor, stunning him, and to the roars of the crowd, slowly skated the necessary five laps to win the match race, and the game for the Hitmen.

Heh. The game drove me crazy, so many twists and turns. (For example, Shick was ejected on the VERY FIRST CARD of the VERY FIRST PERIOD HE COULD SKATE!)

Here's the basic set up:

With about 4-5 cards to go in the final period, the Hitmen were already on the square that would allow them to Jam if they had chosen to, while Chicago was at the starting square (three squares away). Acting as Boston's coach, I decided to go for the Power Jam (one square beyond the Jam square), because only the team that launches the power jam can score, while depending on the card result, both teams could possibly score on a normal jam. So by going for the Power Jam, Boston could lock out Chicago from winning, increasing their odds of winning.

So, all I needed was one of the remaining 5 cards to go their way. Except that it wasn't. Chicago moved up one square, and the others were blanks

Needless to say, it was utterly nerve racking, finally on the last card, I got a result that states "Home Team advances due to cheering fans".

That meant that the power jam had been launched. Since I had just used the last card from the deck, it meant I had to randomly pick one card from the used up deck, and read that result. So I had to close my eyes, and just fumble around for a FAC, hold it up, read it:

"Defense plays inspired, kills off Jam, no points scored"

That hurt. That really hurt.

So we went to the match race, it pretty much played out as I wrote it, Dixon had a huge lead (mostly because several BIG results came up, and Dixon has BIG*, Jestor did not, so that's 2 squares each time, and you need 25 to win)..

Finally, a card came up HIGHLIGHT REEL!

The roll on the Highlight Reel stated that I was to draw the next card, read the skater result, and that person would take a bad fall and be out for the rest of the game.

Drawing the next card, it stated "Visitor skater!" (didn't matter which one, for a match race, it's like that one player card is in all five slots).. I went nuts

Two Match Races break down in brawls as Legends, Bombers Tie

A close game descended into farce tonight at the Bomber Pavillion, as the two teams undid 8 skating periods of high drama with two match races that left the referee with no choice but to penalize the players, and embarassed NRDL officials were forced to call the match a draw.

The referees had a big effect on this beforehand, ejecting two Legends (Redding and Delvecchio in the 8th) and a Bomber (Johnyn Jay, and calling 12 penalties. Also, the Legends lost female captain Mary Ellenborgen, who took the captaincy from the injured Rose Rosdahl.

This game was back and forth, San Francsico lead by "Irish" Debbie Daybe (14 points) skated out to a 20-17 halftime lead, and looked to extend that lead to 7 with a 5-1 fifth period. However, New York came back with seven points from Redding in the sixth to tie things up. O'Hara broke loose for 8 points in the seventh to give the Bombers a five point lead, but a full five pointer from Boronowski in the final skating period meant for the second time this week, we were going to settle things with a match race.

The Legends pitted DD Robinson against the Bombers Irish Debbie O'Hara, however, during the third lap of the match race, the two racers spilled into the infield, and instead of trying to get back up and finish the match race, continued brawling, forcing the referees to seperate them. Since the game had completed, the referee could not eject the players but instead ended the match race.

This meant the men had to go next, and Elbert Kovac (Bombers) and Stuart Henson (Legends) would settle things. Except nothing was settled as the King sent Kovac over the guard rail, and spent a second too long taunting the Big E, as Kovac grabbed Henson by his feet, tripping him, and then dragged him into the stanchion in a most painful manner.

This caused the Legend skaters to head over to defend their player (although Legend #1a pivot Gary Brewer was seen giggling over his rival's intense discomfort, and the Bomber players were not far behind.

Finally, the referees had no choice and declared the game a draw, as security was needed to keep the teams apart.
